00:00:10 Matt
Welcome everyone to the.net Maui podcast. We're here to keep you up to date with the latest and greatest and.
00:00:21 Matt
Net client development. We'll talk about some Azure, some Visual Studio, some blazer, and ofcourse.net Maui. I'm Matt Soucoup.
00:00:29 James
And I'm James montemagno.
00:00:31 James
Yeah, and I think we're blend.
00:00:32 James
In justevenmore.net stuff, you know, I think that's one cool thing about the botnet Maui itself, right?
00:00:38 James
Is that part of Dot net, so when there's actually.net news, we're also going to bring that.
00:00:43 James
To you too, Matt.
00:00:44 Matt
Yeah, yeah, it's the whole it's. I don't want to rebranditasthe.net podcast that's getting a little bit.
00:00:50 Matt
Ahead of ourselves, right?
00:00:52 Matt
But you know that's.
00:00:53 Matt
Thewholepointof.net six is that.
00:00:54 Matt
Vr.net Maui is part of, or Xamarin is partof.net. Now it yeah all one happy world so.
00:01:01 James
And there are a lot of dot net podcasts. In fact, we'll talk about a way for you to find.net podcast later on the podcast.
00:01:08 Matt
Oh wow, James yeah ahead of me.
00:01:11 Matt
God you are sneaky.
00:01:14 James
I am on it.
00:01:15 James
Well let me tell you David cannot join us is on his holiday break.
00:01:19 James
I'm going to wish him a happy holiday and all of you.
00:01:21 James
Happy holiday, you can't see Matt, but he has his holiday Christmas tree up right now.
00:01:24 Matt
Hi Dview, Yep, bringing cheer to my office.
00:01:25 James
It's very lovely.
00:01:29 Matt
Who can't have more cheer?
00:01:31 Matt
I definitely have a lot of.
00:01:32 James
Cheer, now people can't see this, but it is pretty much at the brim of your ceiling.
00:01:38 James
Now what I was really hoping for is for it to to to actually, like, you know, bend like it's so big.
00:01:45
Yeah, it's it does.
00:01:47 Matt
So if you can look really close James and nobody could see this.
00:01:50 Matt
So at the very top there's like this little looks like a crown of of little like Christmas ornaments.
00:01:57 Matt
That's actually a wreath that I put over the top so you can't see the bend in the tree.
00:02:03 James
Nice yeah nice and it looks like you have it.
00:02:05 James
You have tiny vaulted ceilings, right?
00:02:07 James
So they're little vaulted.
00:02:08
Yeah, Yep.
00:02:08 James
It's at the vault, yeah?
00:02:09 Matt
Yep Yep Yep so.
00:02:11 James
That's nice, we put up our holiday tree, yes, so this last weekend we put the ornaments on, which is fun.
00:02:17 James
Me and my wife.
00:02:18 James
Every year we alternate buying ornaments.
00:02:21 James
However this year.
00:02:22 James
We, I thought it was my turn, but I guess it was her turn, but we both bought them.
00:02:26 James
It hasn't come in yet but we we do that kind of unveiling of the ornament stuff like that which is kind of fun.
00:02:30 Matt
It's nice.
00:02:31 James
So that way we just don't buy a bunch of ornaments like the first holiday where there's like 1 ornament on the tree.
00:02:37 James
So now we have a bunch on there as well.
00:02:40 James
And of course some family members give you ornaments and stuff like that too.
00:02:42 Matt
Yeah, right, that sounds fun.
00:02:42 James
Which is kind of nice.
00:02:44 Matt
We went the extra opposite direction.
00:02:46 Matt
We had a bunch of ornaments then we got a cat and now we don't have any ornaments on a tree because we don't want to tempt him to.
00:02:52 Matt
Climb a tree so.
00:02:54 James
Swap them all down.
00:02:54 Matt
We just have.
00:02:55 James
Yeah yes, yeah.
00:02:56 Matt
We just have lights so.
00:02:57 James
I like that like that, well, let's get into the.
00:03:00 James
News literally, as we were recording this a new dropof.net Maui is happening, including a new drop of Visual Studio 2022. Seventeen .1 Preview 2 which is very very exciting.
00:03:12 James
I've been waiting for it to update in my feed so I can get it over here, but by the time it's out it'll be out and live.
00:03:18 James
So this means Donnelly.
00:03:20 James
Preview 11 because the new preview happens every month and we literally talk about it every month is happening.
00:03:25 James
This is a cool one though, because there's actually a lot of stuff that's happening in this release.
00:03:30 James
I was.
00:03:30 James
I was surprised I was like, you know, I'm at everyone going on holiday.
00:03:35 James
Like you know whatever just slows down a little bit that whatever.
00:03:36 Matt
Stuff usually slows down, yeah?
00:03:40 James
However, the team just so much good stuff in here.
00:03:44 James
There's brand new Windows control styling with the fluent design system, which is nice, so the the system has been upgraded.
00:03:51 James
Obviously it's using win UI three, but.
00:03:54 James
There were like.
00:03:55 James
All their renderers and things in place so they they updated all of them to the new fluent design system.
00:04:00 James
Which means your buttons are going to be updated.
00:04:02 James
Your entries are going to be updated.
00:04:03 James
They're going to have.
00:04:04 James
That new beautiful fluent design which looks great on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
00:04:08 James
Two which is really, really great.
00:04:10 James
So you get to see that and those those light up.
00:04:13 James
You don't do anything.
00:04:14 James
Done and then this is a cool 1/2 for desktop and also like iPad and tablet applications which is I didn't think anything was going to happen, but it did happen. We now have multi window support.
00:04:31 James
Insideof.net Maui, and this is super important for desktop apps because you know Windows.
00:04:38 James
It's more than one window.
00:04:40 James
Right, yeah windows, it has the S at.
00:04:43 James
There's an S at the end.
00:04:45 James
There's a windowing system.
00:04:46 James
And now in your net, Maui applications.
00:04:49 James
This is a huge perk perk.
00:04:52 James
Especially, we come from Xamarin forms.
00:04:53 James
Is that now there's an application dot current dot windows that gives you reference to all of your open windows.
00:04:59 James
This is cool.
00:05:00 James
You just say application dot current dot open window.
00:05:02 James
You give it a.
00:05:03 James
Window which has a page.
00:05:04 James
And boom, you got a brand new window that's popped up on your desktop, which is really cool.
00:05:11 James
This happens if you're over on Mac OS or iPad OS.
00:05:15 James
There's a little bit of stuff that you need to update basically to get this happening.
00:05:21 James
To enable these scenes, or basically what they're called.
00:05:25 James
But what's nice on it is that you can test it on an iPad simulator too, and there's a video in there showing you that you can.
00:05:33 James
You know when you open it.
00:05:34 James
It does like side by side.
00:05:35 James
So you have like multiple things side by side, which is really really neat and they updated the weather application to take advantage of that.
00:05:42 James
Which is cool and hopefully we can update an app that we'll talk about later to have multi window support too.
00:05:48 James
So I think would be really cool.
00:05:49 James
So just so much good stuff.
00:05:51 James
Matt, well, probably my favorite feature to be honest with you.
00:05:55 James
'cause I did it I I may have done it.
00:05:57 James
I collaborated with the team I was the spearhead and then the team took and they went wild with it.
00:06:03 James
Jonathan Peppers.
00:06:03 Matt
Red Bird is it red theme?
00:06:05 James
It's the howitzer Chris Holiday time holiday time, Matt.
00:06:06 Matt
Red, Steve
00:06:10 James
Jeez, Louise.
00:06:12 James
We they made red theme the default when you open now.
00:06:17 James
Ah, no, the templates have been completely updated 100%, taking advantage of all the brand new C Sharp 10 features and implicit usings that ha Mr Peppers updated for Donald because.
00:06:36 James
I I went in there and implicit usings there's some Android and iOS ones.
00:06:40 James
There was conflict, so they they updated them.
00:06:41 James
They made them all really super duper nice and it's really cool, so implicit usings are there.
00:06:46 James
It's super clean.
00:06:48 James
All of your file scope namespaces are there.
00:06:53 James
Basically when you open it up, there's there's no more using statements anywhere, they're just.
00:06:57 James
They're just there.
00:06:57 James
It's it's, it's amazing, it's it's good yeah yeah and then and like I said they they they they gather them dynamically which is which is really really cool.
00:07:07 James
So there's a set of default.
00:07:09 James
And there is some underlying ones for iOS and Android. They filter out once there's no conflict. So if you create a button, it's it's not going to have a conflict between a.net Maui button in a in a Windows button or an Android.
00:07:21 James
Great button since things are the.
00:07:23 James
Same, so that's super cool.
00:07:25 James
Uhm, yeah, and it is available. 17.1 Preview Two you can go and get it. Or if you're on a Mac as well, you can run the.
00:07:33 James
Uh net workload install updating thing over there.
00:07:38 James
That should also pump it out.
00:07:40 James
From my understanding at least there so there's a bunch of new docs and things like that and you of course take.
00:07:45 James
A look at the road.
00:07:46 James
Mac product wiki.
00:07:48 James
All that other stuff.
00:07:49 James
So really cool to see going into the hole.
00:07:51 James
Days this happened really cool.
00:07:54 Matt
Yeah, that's a nice big update for for, uh, December, update.
00:07:56 Matt
And yeah, I like the new templates with the implicit usings.
00:07:59 Matt
It's a nice little gift to clean up your source files so you get them nice and slim down for the stuff that you don't.
00:08:05 Matt
Let's face it, you don't really ever Hughes anyway.
00:08:08 Matt
You things that you never use, so using that.
00:08:11 James
You never use, that is correct.
00:08:12 James
Yeah, yeah, so very cool.
00:08:12 Matt
Yep, so there's another really cool update James, that on on your favorite website.net that I just came out recently.
00:08:20 Matt
Was it last week?
00:08:21 Matt
Earlier this week I had beat last week.
00:08:23 Matt
Is that dot net is now available in new languages.
00:08:27 Matt
Japanese and simplified Chinese.
00:08:30 Matt
So previously it was just English only, but now recently we can it's multi language now Japanese and simplified Chinese which is super neat and so in the blog post where we go and announce that Maira Wenzel actually goes through and shows what was all involved in making a website support multi languages.
00:08:49 Matt
Which is in of itself nice to see how the mechanics of all that work.
00:08:55 Matt
But obviously when something this big of a change happens, there's still a little more work to do.
00:09:00 Matt
Some things might get missed and lost in the translation if you will.
00:09:04 Matt
So if you find any issues, let us know.
00:09:07 Matt
Hit that little feedback button.
00:09:10 Matt
And there's still more.
00:09:11 Matt
Work to do as we as we push through it so.
00:09:13 Matt
But still Japanese and simplified Chinese are now available on the dot net website.
00:09:19 Matt
In addition to English.
00:09:20 Matt
So yeah, it's nice to see how we how we're rolling out and including more languages within there.
00:09:26 James
Yeah, this one is a super big one and.
00:09:30 James
I've been, you know, the entire team has been working close with Myra and the on the web team on this because there's all sorts of different pieces like you were talking about going into this.
00:09:39 James
So it's nice.
00:09:40 James
A lot of people ask about, you know translations and localization and and mobile apps and also web apps you know and be talking about, like Blazer applications too, right?
00:09:49 James
So it's something to think about.
00:09:51 James
Come at the start of your application, even if you're just going to architecture your application to make it easier to translate down the road.
00:10:00 James
This is something definitely a great blog post and she links to the globalization and localizationasp.net core to think is super cool.
00:10:08 James
So really, really cool stuff. I'd love it. What else is happening well over end Visual Studio 2022? Like I said 1701 Preview 2.
00:10:18 James
Does drop?
00:10:19 James
But there's a whole bunch of.
00:10:20 James
Awesome things happening for extenders of Visual Studio like myself who recently released a fantastic theme called the Red theme. You can get it in VS 2022. It matches.
00:10:31 James
The VS code theme as well, which is great, but Mads.
00:10:37 James
Uh kristiansen.
00:10:39 James
He has a live stream on the Visual Studio, YouTube and Twitch and used to be called writing extensions with Mads.
00:10:47 James
Now it is called Hacking Visual Studio, where he goes even deeper into the internal bits and interviews.
00:10:51 James
People under the hood and stuff like that.
00:10:53 James
But during that.
00:10:55 James
Uhm, you know as he's super involved with the community, he ended up developing with others.
00:11:01 James
This sort of.
00:11:02 James
Of Visual Studio like open source community toolkit and also this thing called the Visix or Visual Studio, whatever it is.
00:11:15 James
Extensions cookbook and kind of how to get started like a new take on getting started on writing your first extensions.
00:11:23 James
Instead of like all this, you know documentation this is like the new way of doing it.
00:11:27 James
Laser focus on using the toolkits from the Community toolkit.
00:11:33 James
That were developed live because like kind of best practices, so it's a really great way if you're ever been interested in writing an extension, definitely give it a look.
00:11:42 James
I absolutely love it and there is an entire playlist that he created on YouTube too. So not only is there all the back history of all the shows.
00:11:53 James
That he recorded, but there's all of the.
00:11:54 James
These introductory videos on just building and getting started with extensions and we all know Mads is very passionate about extensions so this is great to see helping more developers build great extensions.
00:12:06 Matt
Yeah, and that whole Visx cookbook website. I mean, that's like the documentation site for making extensions. Yep, so now is it visx or is it V6? Or how do we pronounce that?
00:12:17 James
Ah, I say visix, but I.
00:12:18
What's the?
00:12:20 Matt
Yeah, certainly yeah me neither.
00:12:20 James
Don't know if that's correct.
00:12:22 Matt
Yeah, so I don't know visx it's it's correct now.
00:12:27 Matt
So now we have also Onyx James.
00:12:29 Matt
Now you and I were talking about this a little bit before the podcast and we're trying to understand Onyx itself.
00:12:35 Matt
It's a library, it's cross platform.
00:12:37 Matt
It's going to work on your iOS or your Android device and it's machine learning.
00:12:42 Matt
I've heard of that yes, and So what this does is that if you take a Onyx model file, get that onto your device, you can actually do cool things like image recognition or or classification in.
00:12:42 James
I'm at.
00:12:57 Matt
In that case all on device.
00:12:59 Matt
You don't have to call out to like Azure Cognitive Services or anything like that, so it's going to be a little bit faster.
00:13:04 Matt
Or probably a lot a bit faster 'cause it's running all on device there.
00:13:07 Matt
And So what Onyx does if we understand it correctly and it's is that it's, it's kind of as I like to think about it is like a wrapper around the the like cormell or or tensor flow on on the.
00:13:24 Matt
Devices itself, and then it gives you a nice little API that you can call in and use them with, so it makes that cross platform in a way it gets at it underneath the covers it like P invokes into all this C++ goodness underneath and James. How am I doing here with this 'cause it's?
00:13:42 Matt
It's a it's deep stuff, right?
00:13:44 Matt
And we're like I said we were trying to figure.
00:13:46 Matt
It out before we went.
00:13:47 Matt
Went on so.
00:13:49 James
Yeah, you know Mike over on our customer advisory team.
00:13:54 James
Uh, about the great blog post.
00:13:55 James
Going really in depth on the latest release of the Onyx Runtime, nu get packages you can feel like this is.
00:14:01 James
It is basically a super high performant, you know cross platform like Mill, you know training and you know.
00:14:10 James
Interfacing of those libraries and you can even convert like other models like you know, Pytorch models and things like that.
00:14:17 James
But this works across, you know, all Dot net, Windows, Linux, Mac and Android and iOS, so it's cool here is that on some platforms like iOS or to use cormell on some platforms like Android, it'll use like the.
00:14:29 James
Lower level, uh?
00:14:32 James
A C++ library that they have, or you can use an API. These are all things that we don't really know we're talking about, but basically you can think.
00:14:38 James
Of it, as you know, there are some machine learning stuff right like Visual Studio uses the Onyx Runtime, Adobe Oracle, a bunch of other companies that are out there that are on their website that I'm looking at right now, but it gives you that ability to do machine learning kind of natively.
00:14:58 James
Or basically super proficient over there and the sample that might put out in the blog post is an application that classifies an image.
00:15:05 James
So what it is, and he has an image of a dog and it's a golden retriever and it will go off and do it.
00:15:11 James
And there's this website.
00:15:14 James
On the GitHub the Onyx GitHub is called the Onyx models.
00:15:17 James
Uber has like all of these pre built ones.
00:15:19 James
If you're looking for languages or vision or other things like that, you can go and grab all of these different things, which is cool.
00:15:26 James
So he shows how to embed the model file in there, how to pick it, how to do all this stuff and visualize it.
00:15:34 James
Inside of a cross platform, Xamarin forms app which is super cool and that should be backwards compatible with Dana Maui as well.
00:15:40 James
Because you know, those packages are, so I'm assuming and if not, then yeah, I'm sure that they're working with.
00:15:45 James
That team to do it, which is cool, but if you haven't, also definitely check out in this GitHub repo that's in.
00:15:52 James
The blog post which is.
00:15:53 James
The the mob cat samples.
00:15:56 James
It's a mobile customer advisory team, Swieqi.
00:15:58 James
Swiecie and Alex and Mike and Ben and Alex Blount DNL work on this team.
00:16:06 James
A bunch of amazing people and they have all sorts of like crazy crazy repose.
00:16:12 James
I've got like an Azure media Services one working with C plus.
00:16:15 James
Plus how how we're with in memory stuff notification, how backends the Onyx thing SAS token generator.
00:16:22 James
They're like all sorts of different samples that are in there which are really kind of cool just to kind of like look at.
00:16:27 James
So definitely you know.
00:16:30 James
Give it a look.
00:16:30 James
In general, it's a fun, fun like hack projects that they work on over there.
00:16:35 James
Which is quite cool to see.
00:16:37 Matt
Yeah yeah, the the Bobcat team works with a lot of our customers and helps them out with mobile applications.
00:16:42 Matt
And then on this sample GitHub repo, they put their learnings.
00:16:46 Matt
I suppose on how and we can use them for ourselves.
00:16:50 Matt
And the Onyx team is that we're going to have them on the podcast as one of our customer stories early next year, either January or February.
00:17:00 Matt
Schedules depending yeah, so we're working that out, so we'll be able to hear a little bit more in depth.
00:17:02 James
How cool.
00:17:06 Matt
From the people.
00:17:07 Matt
Who did it?
00:17:08 Matt
And they'll be able to explain it because they're smart and.
00:17:14 Matt
They know this stuff, so yeah, and then James.
00:17:18 Matt
You and I yesterday did a did a learn live on micro services.
00:17:23 Matt
Yes, which was a learned live that unition I did helped out from the.netcompsandso.net comp. All the videos are available.
00:17:33 Matt
And I known James, you just did that right?
00:17:36 Matt
You just got everything online, but I saw a blog post that you did about that, not tool.
00:17:40 Matt
When I go is.
00:17:41 James
It from Don account? Yeah yes yeah, all the videos are there 100% at dot net com which you know happened.
00:17:42 Matt
Were all the videos going there?
00:17:47 James
I guess before last month podcasts not only did come from Microsoft learn a bunch of new modules came out, so like everything was updated to down at six, there was a new blazer learning path.
00:17:58 James
Uh, minimal API learning path.
00:18:00 James
You and I are working on the dot net Maui learning path where we're waiting.
00:18:04 James
There's there's a lot of changes and stuff happening.
00:18:06 James
Yeah, so we don't have to update it every single month for every single preview and then someone learns something and it's different.
00:18:12 James
So we're kind of waiting for, you know, I.
00:18:14 James
I think RC is kind of what I'm yeah I'm thinking about, but we have a whole learning path.
00:18:19 James
Prepped and ready to go as well, but over there there was 83 Sessions plus 20 pre rivers or 100 sessions that you can browse through across all different topics in net including all all the source code. All the PowerPoints are live and additionally for the.net conf keynote and for many many sessions.
00:18:40 James
There's an application that myself Nishan Neal from the team.
00:18:45 James
Dan Roth, a team completing concepts worked on as well, which is the net podcast application.
00:18:52 James
It's an open source.
00:18:54 James
Crossplatformapplicationusing.net Maui for iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, and a blazer application for both web and progressive web apps and additionally it shows off how to build and blend Donnie Maui and Blazer together in a hybrid.
00:19:13 James
Way, which is really really cool with interactive elements like signal R and their two.
00:19:18 James
Itusesasp.net core for the razor marketing page. Though Blazor web app inside of it hosted and it also uses brand new minimal APIs and asp.net core for the back end services. And it uses a bunch of worker services that are all micro service bundle.
00:19:38 James
Technologies into new new service called Azure Container Apps.
00:19:43 James
And it's all open source.
00:19:44 James
You can actually grab the source code, run it locally with Docker, which is really cool with a few button clicks.
00:19:52 James
And additionally you can deploy your own Azure back end in minutes to you clone the repo or fork the repo, set a few environment variables and it scaffolds everything out you focus.
00:20:03 James
Figure out all that stuff for you automatically using an.
00:20:05 James
ARM template but.
00:20:06 James
Yeah, it's all available.
00:20:07 James
You can take a look on there I highlighted some of my favorite videos like the what's new in C sharp with Mads and Dustin but also.
00:20:14 James
Me kid is astonishing presentation on supercharging your productivity with Roslyn and AI talking about that AI.
00:20:20 James
It's all there.
00:20:20 James
We watch all of the videos.
00:20:21 James
It's all happening, and additionally, we'll put a.
00:20:24 James
Link to this.
00:20:25 James
Microsoft learn live that you and I hanselman.
00:20:30 James
Myra Galloway Fritz collaborated on.
00:20:34 James
With the learned team to do modern web development with.
00:20:37 James
Net 6 and we finish it with micro Services.
00:20:41 James
Kind of talking about the stuff right here that we use in the dot net.
00:20:46 James
Com Podcast application which.
00:20:48 James
Is so cool.
00:20:49 James
To see it all come together, which is really really.
00:20:54 Matt
Cool full circle and on.
00:20:56 Matt
I think it's December 16th so like 2 days from now which would be probably the day we launched this podcast, right?
00:21:03 Matt
Daisy is the launch party or after party for yeah.
00:21:07 Matt
Yarn.net comps check that out. I think we'll probably have that recorded too, just in case this outcast comes out after the launch party after party and.
00:21:15 Speaker 2
Totally have.
00:21:17 James
My party.
00:21:18 Matt
Anyways, yeah check out the whole learn live series. It's modern web development on with.net. And yeah, it's super great.
00:21:26 Matt
There's like five or six of those out there, so which brings us now to James?
00:21:31 Matt
Some cloud news dented video?
00:21:36 Matt
And one thing I wanted to talk about is Azure storage.
00:21:38 Matt
Azure storage is always really important for us whether we're doing mobile apps or just even even web apps and such.
00:21:45 Matt
Blobs, big binary objects, and with thenew.net Azure SDK as well. One thing that they allow us to do is we can actually tune our uploads and downloads with them with with what they're calling storage transfer options and some of the things we can do with that.
00:22:05 Matt
Is that we can set like concurrency?
00:22:08 Matt
So let's say we are.
00:22:09 Matt
Uploading 10 megabytes and we can say we want to have five essential lines open to blob storage, and we do that so it can go faster or just one.
00:22:20 Matt
And we can also set like maximum transfer size that we want to have open too, so we don't.
00:22:26 Matt
I guess Max.
00:22:27 Matt
So if we run a for Max out our.
00:22:29 Matt
Our data plan or something like that.
00:22:31 Matt
So there's a couple of neat little things that they they did to tune their tune there.
00:22:35 Matt
The way you can upload and download.
00:22:37 Matt
So those I was talking about uploading.
00:22:39 Matt
Same thing goes for downloading with the concurrency in the in the transfer size.
00:22:43 Matt
Yeah, just so I guess some neat little things that they put in there and that they released so the the Azure SDK team is always innovating on there.
00:22:51 Matt
Under stuff I'm making things really nice for netdev.
00:22:54 Matt
Clippers to interact with Azure services.
00:22:58 Matt
So yeah, I thought that was pretty neat.
00:23:00 Matt
Those two little.
00:23:01 Matt
They're not huge things, but they're like little things that make life easier.
00:23:06 James
Nice so I love it.
00:23:09 Matt
And now James will get to the Azure service of the.
00:23:11 Matt
Month and this.
00:23:12 Matt
One is out there both literally and.
00:23:17 Matt
So I'm not sure how how practical this is.
00:23:20 Matt
Going to be.
00:23:20 Matt
For our listeners or for any one of us, but it's amazing.
00:23:24 Matt
It's called Azure or.
00:23:25
At all.
00:23:26 James
Orbital something has to do with space.
00:23:26 Speaker 2
Right?
00:23:28 Matt
Yeah, it's part of Azure space as well and I actually had no idea this thing even existed.
00:23:33 Matt
Wait wait till you get a load of this.
00:23:35 Matt
This is actually at various Azure data centers.
00:23:39 Matt
We have satellite antennas cleaned up.
00:23:44 Matt
All right, so they're Co located.
00:23:47 Matt
And you can actually reserve time on a satellite antenna.
00:23:53 Matt
To essentially control it so you can communicate with various satellites well out there and then you can get once you get that data down, it's they're automatically connected to the Azure Azure backbone and away you go like you're ingesting data and you're going super quick.
00:24:08 Matt
Why would you want to do this?
00:24:11 James
Satellites are cool, yeah?
00:24:13 Matt
Right, I mean it's amazing.
00:24:14 Matt
The portal looks just like that when you get onto the portal to do this, like the first option is scheduled time or you know which satellite you're like.
00:24:23 Matt
Register a satellite you know, like where you pick which satellite you want to write a story with.
00:24:28 Matt
So mainly it's aimed at like companies.
00:24:30 Matt
Like like Airbus has a fleet of satellites up there who have like really really high resolution.
00:24:38 Matt
And when you think about it though, if you're launching satellites you also have to have the ground station you know to you mean just can't throw a satellite into orbit.
00:24:47 Matt
You also have they had the ground station to communicate and.
00:24:50 Matt
You can do that, but if you want to have it like real time and make it fast.
00:24:54 Matt
What could be better than to have, like Microsoft, solve the problem for you and have?
00:24:59 Matt
A hook, right?
00:24:59 Matt
To the backbone of the inner core of Azure.
00:25:02 Matt
So that's what this is all aimed at is really.
00:25:04 Matt
It's aimed at private satellite customers, but I had no idea that like NASA has public satellites up there.
00:25:12 Matt
That's cool.
00:25:13 Matt
Yeah, that's pretty cool.
00:25:14 Matt
And a lot of them are like weather based satellites, but we still can connect to him and and like control him and grab like Earth base weather, photos Trump.
00:25:23 Matt
Anyways, the present yeah, the practical application though, like if you're using, you know the.
00:25:24 James
For some reason.
00:25:30 Matt
Is that like the renting time on these satellites is like you can do things like maybe use the Onyx runtime to identify like container ships like when they get into port and say alright, you know these were going to be 2 backed up when we want to reroute these container ships over to, you know from Puerto Seattle down to.
00:25:50 Matt
Port Tacoma or something like that so it's or maybe like fighting forest fires so you can actually see where the fires are and you can like tell the people who are fighting them to get out of there because you know it's going to be a dangerous path.
00:26:03 Matt
Or give them the best path out of there and stuff like that.
00:26:06 Matt
So and yeah, so it's really what you do is you get the time series down from the satellite, throw em into like event hub or.
00:26:13 Matt
Something like that and.
00:26:14 Matt
Away you go and do your thing.
00:26:16 Matt
So yeah, I just thought it was amazing that they actually have now like satellite dishes, colocated with the Azure data centers, and they're building more.
00:26:23 Matt
And there's actually some private satellite dishes there, too, so.
00:26:27 James
Azure orbital, that's cool.
00:26:28 James
I like it.
00:26:29 James
I mean, it makes a lot of sense because you know, you just gave some good examples.
00:26:32 James
But you know, Internet cell phone perception is not available everywhere in the middle of the middle of the ocean.
00:26:39 James
And you know in in forests as I drive through the state, you know, and in fact you know if you do cross country driving, you often have that right.
00:26:47 James
I have a SiriusXM satellite and I get you know music beam to my car which is kind of cool.
00:26:54 James
Most times, unless there's some crazy blockage, but you know, I think about that.
00:26:57 James
There are some really pivotal things and there are, you know, satellite phones.
00:27:01 James
Still, for the reasons that the cell phones don't work everywhere in general you know so tech they don't even work half the time in the city.
00:27:10 James
So or in my house you know so.
00:27:13
Right?
00:27:14 Matt
Yeah, like mail.
00:27:14 James
Oh, that's really cool.
00:27:15 James
That's a good good.
00:27:16 Matt
Yeah, and if you're like a scientist, you run time on a satellite to get data and then process it with Azure right away so you know the whole thing is taken care of for you.
00:27:25 Matt
I'll link out to a video where the PM in charge of orbital talks about and she goes through all the issues like 'cause there's satellites at three moon satellites are moving, the Earth is moving, satellites are at different.
00:27:37 Matt
Orbit elevations and like they transfer the satellite from one antenna to another to get best reception for you and all that stuff.
00:27:44 Matt
It's it's really amazing.
00:27:47 James
That's crazy that is crazy.
00:27:50 James
I love it.
00:27:51 James
Pick the pod you gotta pick.
00:27:53 James
Oh, the pod.
00:27:54 Matt
Oh, do I have a pic of the pod you go first?
00:27:56 Matt
James, I'll have to think.
00:27:57 James
I'm gonna have to think pick the pod. Well, obviously it's organized orbital. No, it's my pick of the pod has to be just allthe.com videos.
00:28:07 James
I'm just copping out here to be honest with you.
00:28:09 James
It's a holiday time.
00:28:10 James
I'm gonna think about.
00:28:12 James
In general I think that it's a.
00:28:14 James
It's a nice time to go.
00:28:15 James
Watch some videos, get some rewind.
00:28:17 James
Hands down and of course you know there's so much as educational content.
00:28:23 James
That's my pick of the pod educational content.
00:28:25 James
This year alone, I think the team is in a spectacular job of putting out so much new content, whether it be videos, live streams, the events, Microsoft learning content, new documentation you want to.
00:28:37 James
One series, I mean, you name it.
00:28:39 James
There's there's something for everyone to go off and learn.
00:28:42 James
Dot net right. There's a new education pack. There's new interactive notebooks. I mean, there's just so much out there to do so I think that there's just a great time to get started exploring content, and you know some great content from MVP's and community members out there too that are, you know, people are always like I want to, you know, go even further.
00:29:02 James
I can I can I pay for some stuff like how do I there's a Pluralsight so there's other stuff?
00:29:06 James
There's other stuff out there like I think there's like a net mastery course, and I know Tim Corey also has a AC sharp, you know, course as well. So a lot of just amazing people in the community doing awesome.
00:29:18 James
Stuff a lot of stuff for free on the youtubes, but also a lot of great you.
00:29:22 James
Know you know curriculum almost out there to get started in bootstrap careers, so just a really great time to go learn and start all this new stuff and there's just really something for everyone no matter where they're at their stage in their career.
00:29:37 James
Just getting started or.
00:29:38 James
Or like me, you know. And then 25 years in.
00:29:41 Matt
Yep, can't cannot argue with that pic of the pod and.
00:29:45 Matt
I'll just say.
00:29:46 Matt
While you're learning, install your install the montemagno red theme.
00:29:50 Matt
Yes, and in Visual Studio and get it I'm gonna have to do it.
00:29:53 Matt
I have not done it.
00:29:54 Matt
I thought it was just a James joke at the beginning like you were just, but it's a real thing now.
00:29:59 Matt
People like it.
00:30:00 Matt
Yeah, you read me a comment on.
00:30:02 Matt
From from the GitHub repo.
00:30:04 Matt
So I'm going.
00:30:04 James
Hey Bill, on that people love it, they're all.
00:30:04 Matt
To try it, yeah.
00:30:06 Matt
About it I'm gonna give it a shot, see what it is.
00:30:08 Matt
So yeah, everybody else should give it.
00:30:09 James
To try it out that theme Madame, I think it's gonna do it for this week.
00:30:14 James
So this month.
00:30:14 Matt
Yeah, this month this year is.
00:30:14 James
's podcasts happy holidays.
00:30:17 Matt
Yeah, happy holidays.
00:30:18 Matt
This year podcast we're going to see everybody next year.
00:30:21 James
Bye bye.
