Uh today I had an author on Mark Lindquist who was one of bachelors or one of people magazine's most eligible bachelors back in the day. He's had four very wildly successful novels that he's written and he's been a public defender, an elected official down in Washington state. So that's quite an interesting episode, but today right now I have Spencer moron who is running for Anchorage assembly seat. Uh Spencer, Welcome to the mustard Alaska show. Hey, thanks john, appreciate it.

Good to be on with you. So Spencer tell folks a little bit about, take us way back to where did you grow up and uh what initially got you involved into politics maybe a couple of years ago? So I grew, yeah, yeah, so I grew up in North Carolina. Um and uh was, was there pretty much all the way through high school went to college in Virginia. Um so uh met my wife actually in, in college there in Virginia. She was a long time or actually lived in Anchorage her whole life here.

Um so after graduation in uh, in college, I moved up here, we got married uh summer of 2014. And so I've been up here for almost nine years now. And yeah, so honestly, I was reflecting on the time when I kind of got involved in politics. And uh, you know, it was really when I started paying taxes. Um, you know, I started realizing, man, you know, this, uh, the government's the government's using a lot of my money for for what, you know.

And so then I started to look at uh, and I started, you know, primarily just following federal stuff, but then it's kind of trickled down into the state and just realizing, you know, hey, what what is our state doing, what, you know, what our legislators doing, what is our government just kind of each tier of government. And I think around 2020 when we had covid and just all the other um, madness happening in the world, I really started to see how even more local government mattered.

Um, you know, pertaining specifically to the Anchorage assembly. Um, so I think 2020 kind of opened my eyes to how the decisions, you know, it's just not the president's not the, you know, necessarily governor who's making some of those rules that affect your everyday life. It really is those, I mean, they say, you know, politics is all local.

I agree with that now more than ever after coming through that Covid, uh, and realizing, you know, it the decisions that they can make really do have an effect on your everyday life. Um, so yeah, so that's kind of uh, my background, I have been volunteering in politics here in, in east Anchorage for a couple of years, um, helped on a couple campaigns and uh, just mainly just volunteering behind the scenes trying to get good help recruit good people to run.

Um, and then this time around as I was in the process of recruiting someone and trying to get someone to run and um, just to provide a little bit more balance I in turn in that recruiting process got recruited myself. So, so here I am and uh, I guess it's my time. So it's exciting. So I'm, I'm, I'm ready for the, ready for the uh, the journey. So that's awesome. So tell people exactly what are you running for and where is your district?

For folks that are listening in, who are like, I don't know if I live in this district. Where's the district? Yeah, so they did, they did recently, the anchors assembly did recently um redraw the lines, but for those who do know, uh, I mean I am running for anchors assembly District five seat. I um, the for the person who's currently in that seat is actually turning out. So it's a completely open seat that I'm running for again, seat I is actually east Anchorage.

So it's basically, um, you know, from boundary all the way up, stuck again. Uh, and then tutor from tutor all the way to the university and then down to bar. So it's kind of east Anchorage. Um, and yeah, even up, like said even up basher stuck again, heights area. So so tell folks what it is that you're, you stand for.

I know um, personally what you probably stand for, but you know, there's gonna be people listening on here that are gonna be hearing about you for the first time and maybe they live in your district. So what are the things that you stand for? So the three, the three main things that I am coming into this race, um, seeing priority.

Uh, you know, obviously I'm not coming into this race with an agenda, you know, with, hey, I'm coming in here and I'm ready to push this agenda and I'm ready to, you know, I'm ready to do all this stuff. What I am coming in to do is make sure that we prioritize the things that I feel like our city needs most right now.

I think we need, um, we need, you know, public safety will be my number one that's supporting our law enforcement, making sure they have the resources they need, keeping our community safe. So that's number one for me, infrastructure is number two. Um, and that's, you know, obviously the port of Anchorage is a huge uh, factor right now down and toured the port of Anchorage this past week.

Um, just talking to folks down there, it was very interesting to see this kind of life cycle of the port of Alaska and seeing um just the deterioration that we've had, um, if we, if we have another earthquake, you know, what problems Uh, could occur. And and really when you think about the fact that about 90% of the goods of Anchorage and even a large portion of the goods that come into our state as a whole come through that court when you really consider that, um, it's a game changer.

So, and you know, and I think that right now the assembly and the mayor are kind of going back and forth and making it a political issue and you know, obviously I understand you got to fight, you know, look at the costs and so forth. But right now we have, you know, we, we, we as an assembly cannot stand in the way of making sure that, you know, vital supplies are getting to our, our citizens like that's just bottom line.

So so to me infrastructure, So the port of Anchorage, I mean obviously a big element of that would be um roads and bridges, specifically in the winter, it would be snow plowing and snow removal has been a big issue for folks here in Anchorage, just being able to get back and forth to work safely. Um, so yeah, I think those, you know, that's, that would be my second main issue is infrastructure and then the last one that I'm really focusing on is is our economy.

Um and just making sure we actually have support for small businesses. Um and then we're encouraging investment into our city and so that um that that can look at a lot of different ways, but figuring out a way to remove barriers for people who want to invest in in our city, ultimately our state. Um because the more jobs we can create, the better it is for our kids growing up and having opportunities and um having a place for them to actually succeed.

So the Anchorage Assembly, if somebody were to tune in to the Anchorage Assembly, they would notice dysfunction. Um the uh Anchorage Assembly, you know, I'm fine with them bickering amongst themselves because they it's good for politics, politicians, you know, to not necessarily agree with each other all the time. That's what makes America awesome. But the far left leaning Anchorage assembly has yet to figure out a way to get along with conservatives in Anchorage.

They oftentimes vilify the actual people of Anchorage and and just really disrespectful towards folks that live in Anchorage. Uh what would be, you know, what are your thoughts on that? Are you going to come into the Anchorage Assembly trying to maybe be the peacemaker and and help these adults act like adults, are you gonna get in there and shake things up a little bit. What's your style? Yeah, my style is definitely one not to necessarily shake things up.

I do think that if we're going to have productive movement for our city, we do have to act like adults. We have to do have to come in and um try to move our city forward rather than, um, you know, coming in and just trying to blow things up and and so forth. So to me, um I want to look at the proposals that are in front of me, try to find a reasonable approach. Um Ultimately we're serving the taxpayers. This, you know, our government needs to run smooth, like almost like a business would.

Um, and I know it's a little different because it's, you know, obviously it's not, you know, you're not trying to profit and everything like that, but you have to run efficiently. You have to run smoothly, You have to work for the people. And if you're not, then obviously, you know, people are gonna be suffering and people are gonna say, you know, people expect you to be serving them.

I mean, that's what you're elected to do, you put into office to um for the people if you're not serving their interest and you're not helping them. And like I said, some of the properties that I have, I feel like, um it's just basic needs to work. If it doesn't work, then find solutions to fix it. And so that's my approach to it. I don't, I don't necessarily coming come in there. Um think, and, and think, you know, hey, guns blazing approach is the best way to accomplish that.

Um yeah, I'm willing to listen to whatever the proposal is and then make a wise decision based on the facts. You know, if, if it's not a good financial decision, if we don't have the money then okay, they don't spend it or figure out a way to tweak the proposal or whatever the issue is. Um but yeah, so that's, that's, that's my approach on it. I like that. So I hear that you have a campaign kickoff event potentially, I think tonight as this episode is being released.

So tell us about that kick off event and uh you know, folks are interested in getting involved in your campaign, what could they do? Yeah, so I got a kick off event tonight, it's gonna be a yes bistro here in Anchorage. Um it's gonna be from 6 to 8 and I'd love for people to stop by.

If you're listening to this podcast and you want to swing by, uh you don't have to pay for the whole time, but just swing by and say hi, um you know, if you got a question for me or you want to know more about what I stand for, feel free to ask me any questions that you have and I'd love to be able to chat with you on that and uh yeah just excited to try to serve the people and again, I want to be someone who's gonna listen.

I like I said before, I'm not coming into this with an agenda and uh and trying to, you know, seek profit myself or or power or anything like that. I'm I'm just a normal citizen. Uh you know, that that's really a concerned citizen. I've got four kids and so their future is really important to me and I want to make sure that we're headed in a in a good direction so that um they can have a good future. So that's really the main driving for uh focus for me as to why I'm getting into this.

Um uh so yeah that's kind of my my background and so forth. Nice. Well tell people what's your website facebook, how does somebody get involved in your campaign, who do they call? How do they call? Yeah. Yeah. So um I got a really catchy website. It's more for Anchorage dot com. So uh that's more M O R E. Like my last name, more for Anchorage dot com. My facebook handle is more for Anchorage and then my instagram handle is more for Anchorage as well. So we've got some creative stuff on there.

I try to tie in some family stuff and just some personal stuff so you can learn more about who I am. I'm not just like I said a politician, I'm a normal guy um do normal guy stuff so I enjoy, I enjoy my life and uh and and my family and uh yeah, I just want to, I want to see the city succeed and so follow along if you we have a little bit more fun on instagram but facebook's more of my uh just my normal campaign journey.

So anyway, feel free to do that if you want to donate on online, it's more for Anchorage dot com, there is a donate button on there. So I'd love to um have you help me in this journey and I'd love to just bring some balance back to the Anchorage assembly and um really serve the people. So awesome! Well thank you so much.
