God's Righteousness, Sin's Condemnation

Speaker 1

So , if sin needs to be condemned , if sin needs to have this punitive response to it , and Jesus took on our sin and received that punishment on our behalf where does that leave you and me ?

Speaker 2

Hello , welcome back to the move where we are vibing with the book 10 minutes at a time .

Speaker 1

We've been going one or two chapters or one or two verses at a time . Today's no different . Today we're looking at verses 22-ish to 24-ish . Another short one . Why don't we just read that one out loud ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , because it's a little funny , so how about you give it to them ? Huh .

Speaker 1

For there is no distinction , for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift .

Speaker 2

Oh , we're stopping there as a gift . You all right with that ? Yeah , let's do that , because that's a lot . Yeah , through redew . Yeah , that's heavy , yeah . So what we want to make sure is that those who are interacting with us are really interacting . So please , as we've read this and you've heard some things , go ahead and leave a comment .

Let us know what you think . You got some reactions , some insights . We'd love to know and see where you're at .

Speaker 1

With that said , 10 minutes on , the clock starts now .

Speaker 2

Okay , so there's something I do want to jump in .

Speaker 1

You see how fast that it is . Yeah , you got something .

Speaker 2

You're good . Verse 21 . Before we dive in yeah , but now the righteousness . We talked a little bit about the button right and then we talked about the law prophesying , but the righteousness .

When you asked a question in the last 10 minutes about favorite word in the Bible , I can't say there's one favorite word , but this is right up there , righteousness , which is decaio su ne here in the Greek , and the idea is you're just so smart , dude .

I just I read it right before we sat down and then I had to phonetically spell it out and listen to somebody say it .

Speaker 1

There's no shame in that . That's what this is . You guys think there's a lot of prep that goes into this . We're just two dudes just talking , just vibing through the text .

Speaker 2

That's what the YouTube is for . So what happens is that decaio su ne here is the right doing of God , and right doing in the sense of justice right . This is where we get the translation for the word justice decaio su ne righteousness , and the question has been asked a lot is what is the righteousness of God ?

Well , I like to offer maybe a suggestion of where we can look .

Speaker 1

There's a couple ideas of that , and people are different , conflicting views .

Speaker 2

Let's talk about some of those first , because I think one of those is one that is heavy handed . And when we talked about previous , when we find in Romans , chapter one , that we think that the righteousness of God is first and foremost his punitive action on disobedience and or sin right , so that then justice is first and foremost punitive right , is that ?

Speaker 1

one of the ways you were thinking . It wasn't what I was thinking . I think that sometimes , when people think of the righteousness of God , they think of it as a description of God , of his character the righteousness of God is that he is X , y or Z .

Speaker 2

Okay , and what would be some of those markers ?

Speaker 1

I'm thinking back to when Moses was being hid in the cleft right , my man Right . What is it ? What are the phrase ? I don't have that one , well , this is actually Exodus 34 .

Speaker 2

Okay , right , let me just jump there real quick . I got my B-blad right in front of me If you go to Exodus 34, .

Speaker 1

Moses is saying Lord , show me yourself . And then God hides Moses into the cleft of the rock . That's right . He passes past him , and then there's this description that's right , and it's Romans , I'm not Romans .

Speaker 2

It's Exodus 34 , verse six , where he says the Lord passed before him and proclaimed the Lord , the Lord , and that's capital . Lord Adonai , referring to Yahweh , right , the holy name , the tetogram , a God merciful and gracious , slow to anger , abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness .

That's the Hebrew idea of Hesed right , this faithfulness that knows no end , keeping steadfast love for thousands , forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin . But who will by no means clear the guilty , visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation Right .

So you have this aspect where the righteousness of God first and foremost , that what positions him . God says I'm merciful , gracious , slow to anger , abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness , keeping steadfast love for thousands , forgiving iniquity , transgression and sin .

But I know way , clear the guilty , I visit iniquity , so that then there is a place where the right doing of God visits iniquity , but that he first positions himself as somebody who longs to not only to be merciful , but who is merciful right .

Speaker 1

So when we get to Romans and the righteousness of God is being manifested , is this what this is talking about ?

Speaker 2

I absolutely wholeheartedly believe that this is exactly what it's talking about , that the right doing of God is how he can both be merciful , faithful , loving , just raising people up right , while at the same time visiting a judgment on that which is most grievous , and that is sin itself .

Speaker 1

So what does it mean then ? We're backtracking , we're not even coming to the other verses . But here's my question then how does that righteousness of God appear through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe ? So the fact that God is , how does that impact me when I put my faith in Jesus Christ ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , so when this is why verse 23 so necessary , for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .

Right , and let's frame this because we frame around here so that the glory of God is not just his majesty is like , he's shiny , he's a real good dude , and not only that , you know , we see him and he is , you know , eyes of fire and all that sort of deal , no , but that the glory of God is really this Exodus 34-6 that he's merciful and that he's loving

and he's gracious , steadfast and faithful . Right , so that the glory of God , if we go back to this idea that the glory of God is his enthronement , not like the Caesar on a throne but on a cross , then his glory is that he would be willing to lay down his life for another , and then the indictment is that we all fall short of that glory .

Yeah , and this is why we're sinned .

Speaker 1

There's no distinction . It doesn't matter if you're Jew or Greek , if you're rich or poor , if you're white or black or Asian , doesn't matter .

Speaker 2

It doesn't matter , you set expectations that you just don't meet . You set expectations for others where we set them up to fail , and we don't even meet that expectation . And we're very unwilling to give in this manner of ourselves so that another might live . I'd never die for a perfect stranger .

And so that Paul is saying listen , this is at the heart of God , that the heart of God is that he would allow himself to be murdered , crucified and buried for our sake . And then here's the secret that in doing that , god was actually having a punitive response to sin itself .

Speaker 1

So that You're making a distinction here . Yeah , where the punitive response is landing , yeah .

Speaker 2

So the punitive response isn't so much on the sinner person but not sin itself , and this is why Paul laid her on . This is why it's important , because we know that Paul actually spoke to these Romans .

Well , he didn't speak to these Romans , but they knew the gospel prior to this letter , so they had heard things like this , and they might have heard something like what is said to the Corinthians in their second letter , in the fifth chapter , 21st verse , which is Christ , who he who knew no sin was made to be sin , be called sin . Yeah , right .

So not only that he carried our sins right , it was like they're marbles that he put in a lapsack no , no , no , no , no , no but that in the cross , at the moment of the cross , he himself became sin , and then that that sin is actually condemned and put in the ground to die .

Speaker 1

So if sin needs to be condemned , if sin needs to have this punitive response to it , and Jesus took on our sin and received that punishment on our behalf , where does that leave you and me , when our sin has been taken on by Jesus ?

Speaker 2

So there was a prophet that Moses promised that would be raised up , yeah , and so this prophet is actually on a cross bleeding , and he becomes sin for the sake of the people he's trying to minister to , goes to the ground , dead , dead .

Speaker 1

Then all of a sudden three days later he rises up . Yeah .

Speaker 2

In spirit power and he testifies this . I do not hold your sin toward me , against you .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Quite . To the contrary , I now give you the very life-giving power that has resurrected me , because I have put away your sin . This is why the law and the prophets testified until John . And then John says behold the Lamb of God that takes away . So Jesus took away sin .

Jesus took away that which kept us under law , Jesus took away that , which I would even try and clarify more .

Speaker 1

So he didn't just take away sin , he took away my sin , he took away your sin . So that thing that I feel heavy on me , that I get the sense that has separated me from God , and he names it .

Speaker 2

That's not actually there , that's not true , and he names it for what it is . It's a deception that caused you to murder he who came in righteousness . And yet I won't hold

Grace and Belief Justification Concept

it against you .

Now , that whole sentiment , that whole idea , all that sin is is literally condemned and put in a grave , so that now you can live in the knowledge that , first and foremost , you must know that God is on your side , he's your beloved , that you're his beloved and he's all these expectations that you have to meet up to to be something that you thought you ought

to be .

Speaker 1

That's not there . That's not actually what he's thinking about . He's already passed that , like that chapter has been written , done , closed , and he's moved on to the next thing . And it's in this sense that Paul is saying this is how you're justified .

You're not justified because there's this debt that you have to pay off , that there's the standard that you have to attain . No , he's saying listen , that was already put to death in the body of Jesus on the cross and it's been put to death in the grave and it's stuck there . It's not coming back . Get warm , preacher .

He's saying listen , this is how you're going to be justified , this is how you're going to have this right standing with God . It's never by anything that you could do .

Speaker 2

This is grace , this is it , this is the gift that God is offering to every single one of us and if you're willing to believe that God is this good and he did it for you . This is his glory , this is his honor and this is the way he gives immortality , by being enthroned on a cross for you .

Speaker 1

I don't know if you guys felt that , but that was good stuff . That's gospel truth . That's gospel truth . Man , we're going to be bringing back that gospel truth 10 minutes at a time . We'll see you all tomorrow , thank you .
