Episode description

From the wars of Sihon and Og to modern-day Eilat, the southern borders of Eretz Yisrael remain a halachic and historical mystery. Rav Shlomo Katz takes us deep into the confusion around Nachal Mitzrayim, the shifting number of nations to conquer, and the conflicting maps passed down through Torah and tradition. What does all this mean for the mitzvah of yishuv ha’aretz today? Are places like Be’er Sheva and the Negev still part of the command? With passion and clarity, we uncover how the lines we draw shape the Torah we live.

ישר כוח everyone. Good morning. So we're going to be going down south today. היום יורדים דרומה.As we saw yesterday, the east got a little interesting. The eastern borders of ארץ ישראל got a little bit interesting, especially because of the מלחמה of the the wars of סיחון and עוג. And we had a lot of ramifications, הלכה ramifications regarding מצוות התלויות בארץ on a place that wasn't initially supposed to be ארץ ישראל according to the way that השם told us in פרשת in in ספר במדבר and specifically in the פרשה of of מסעי. So with a דרום, with the south, it's even more complicated. The the southern border is southern border the way that we understand it is very complicated. Now when you look at different maps of the way people mapped out the southern גבולות of ארץ ישראל, you're going to see a lot of different maps and a lot of different lines crossing at a lot of different places. That's why we brought up briefly, we brought up briefly one of the problems that you may have in a place like אילת for instance, and also questions that came up when the Sinai was given back, given back, when it was given to the to the, you got to be very careful with this terminology, with to to Egypt. I'll just give you, I'm going to show you one map that's just as confusing as all of them. I don't know if you how well you can see the bottom, this red line. You see this red line? Okay, so this red line is according to most פוסקים of today the line that is the southern גבול of ארץ ישראל. Now why is it so complicated? What's one of the reasons why it's so complicated? It's not our fault. We're not trying to be cop-outs, it's just really not our fault. When אברהם אבינו was told what the what the borders were, he told, it was said there are going to be ten nations that you're going to be conquering. When when we were told again in פרשת מסעי about the borders, it was suddenly it became seven nations that you're going to conquer, and then another time it was speaking about, no, no, actually there's only three nations that you're going to have to conquer. So by the time עולי מצרים came in the time of יהושע, it was almost like, wait a second, which ones are כאילו מן לכתחילה the ones that have to be taken care of, and then the rest will be לימות המשיח. And that's where the מחלוקת's been about what's the southern border of of of ארץ ישראל. And the most common, and again, there are so many שיטות here. I was I was my head was spinning. My head was spinning just looking at all the different שיטות. Of course, you know, this is a this is a שאלה again that has to do very much with מצוות התלויות בארץ, and regarding ברכות about הפרשת תרומות ומעשרות. The way that he brought it down here is that the the the דיון is is is really about two questions trying to figure out exactly which, you know, which is what where where's what and what did the Torah mean when it said certain words like נהר מצרים, נחל מצרים. One of the ways we they were working on trying to understand what the southern border was based on names that the Torah give us of certain locations. The what's the problem with that when it comes when it comes to figuring out certain names of locations throughout the Torah? I'll give you an example. Where's גושן? Where's ארץ גושן? But what do we know about גושן? It's a great example. Where's גושן? We know uh בית יהודה שלח לפניו גשנה. Like when when יעקב אבינו was descending down into Egypt, he sent יהודה to go and רש"י tells us להתקין לו בית תלמוד, right? He goes and set up a ישיבה in ארץ גושן. Now if they're in ארץ ישראל and he goes down, they would think, even back then you would go down to go to Egypt. Where was גושן? Sinai. It seems Sinai, right? What's the problem with that is that in ספר יהושע in פרק י' in one of the מלחמות that יהושע has, that's בכלל not in the area, he's fighting over ארץ גושן. So that's why the the מפרשי המקרא that are trying to establish where exactly these locations are have a have a real, they have a real difficult time because some of these names, some places had two different, some places had like two locations with the same name. Not South Carolina, North Carolina. That's next, that's easy. We're talking about two completely different locations with the same names. Therefore we that the חז"ל had to, חז"ל and the אחרונים had to do and they're still doing a lot of research to determine where exactly this הגבול הדרומי is. Goshen, New York. בית אל, בית לחם. So the דיון to where the גבול of עולי מצרים, the דיון the דיון to where the גבול of עולי מצרים, is really two matters. One is regarding חובת ישוב ארץ. How does this play a role in by us is that if we have a חובה to go make עליה and and settle the land, what סדר עדיפות is the southern area to other places? זאת אומרת, if it's included in the בסיס that אברהם אבינו was told and then we could say, okay, then continue, do these places fall under the should we all be moving to באר שבע right now? Should we all be moving to ירוחם? Should we all be moving even more south like take over the נגב and you know, there's today it's ממש, we see what's going on. That's the problem is that it's still unclear till today. And on the second thing like we said before is like the חובה of the מצוות התלויות בארץ, especially when if there was no situation of a ריבונות ישראלית, comes the more modern day ציוני פוסקים and say, look, all these שאלות were good שאלות until עם ישראל came and established a מדינה around those borders again. Because no matter what way you hold, once it's a continuous settlement under Israeli sovereignty, all these שאלות and ספקות you had, specifically regarding תרומות ומעשרות, גמרנו עם זה. Therefore למסקנה, the מיעוט שבמיעוט today holds really that אילת is חוץ לארץ, even though according to the way that we saw, according to the map of, let's say עולי בבל, it it seems that's not part of the original plan, נכון? Even the way that I showed you the map that that today most people hold by, אילת is down here. This line goes here. Problem is there's still a chunk of סיני that that is not yet back into our possession. But in שמיטה, when the עולי מצרים, זה למשל תרומה, that's not from there? That's yeah, that's עולי מצרים is basically the גבולות that in the, that's talking about the תקופה of יהושע. And and with that, you know, why was it... למה לא הביאו את זה? So that's בדיוק. בדיוק. So you're saying like ציוני פוסקים wouldn't eat that? They would say it's a ספק. Yeah. בדיוק. Now I I found something amazing. This is this is thrilling me this topic. Because I saw yesterday, I'm sure you've seen this in קיבוץ עין הנצי"ב, have you ever been to קיבוץ עין הנצי"ב? They found there a huge rock, a massive, massive rock from the time of כורש, where uh from the time of עולי בבל, right? That on this rock דוקא there they reinstituted all the words, the way they understood חלוקת הארץ. It's still there. It's unbelievable. A massive, massive rock. I'll send you a video of it. And on it is inscribed all the גבולות based on how they understood it. It's not a it's not a map, it's a רשימה, yeah. Yeah, it's it's unbelievable. It's unreal. This is unreal stuff. And that's what that's what חז"ל, that's what ראשונים, אחרונים have been trying to understand as well. It's just amazing that we're still in the midst of like you know, discovering and revealing all these things. It's a it's לא יאומן. It's an unbelievable thing. But again, but if the Torah had never said כל מקום אשר תדרוך כף רגלכם, then it'd be much easier. Because it'd be like, whatever השם told אברהם אבינו, זהו, גמרנו, go break your heads on everything else. But because the Torah gives us that פסוק, we see already this ארץ ישראל is not as, it's like we make ארץ ישראל bigger. It's an amazing thing. And we have to understand this and that means that our dwelling here, our ישוב here, our holding on to this is actually expanding a מצוה with הלכה ramifications, which is just wild. It's it's a wild concept. But בעזרת השם, there's a lot more to discuss in details regarding the south, but because we I just want to continue the flow. בעזרת השם, we're going to continue and see and see the north tomorrow, בעזרת השם. Okay. Have a wonderful day.
