Welcome back to the MindScape podcast, I'm very happy to be with you as we round out 2023. One a year, I've been having so many conversations with clients in the last few weeks who all seem to be in this real energy of like, I want to close tabs and I want to be more structured, and I want to be more organised, which is really,
really cool. So I've been working with a few clients this week to just wrap things up, get things really clear, have a solid plan for next year, know what the plan is, so that we can close the tabs and go into the new year just knowing exactly what the priorities are, and what's a distraction. And I think this is such a cool time to be really looking back at the year that's just been to see where have we been distracted?
Where have we been giving our time and attention that might not have been the most productive? Where are we trying to be true, productive and not letting ourselves rest? Where are we just really looking back on the year before we start to set any sorts of goals, plans or intentions for 2024. And so that's exactly what today's episode is about, it's going to be a quick one, it's going to be
short, sharp and snappy. And it's going to give you a lot of prompts and a lot of ideas for how to go about doing a little bit of a reflection, before moving into and setting yourself up for 2024. So I say to my clients all the time, and the level that people listening will know that I use this quote, we don't learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience. So how I set myself up for any year is to reflect on
the year that has been. And what I'm usually looking for when I do some reflections is to see if there's been any changes that I need to clock, whether that's like all my values seem to have shifted, or my identity is moving or shifting, or I don't really feel lit up by the things that I once felt lit up by, or what I thought I wanted, I want to I want to readjust or reassess or pivot like it's really about looking at what are the lessons? Has there been any changes that we need to adjust
for? And also, what are the reoccurring lessons of 2023. And it might not even be that it's just 2023 where you keep getting this same lesson, you keep getting frustrated at yourself, maybe you keep doing repeating this similar pattern, and you're a little bit off yourself. And it's like when am I gonna learn why do I keep doing this? Or? Oh, that's really interesting. That seems to come easy for me. What is it about that. So it's a really, really, really
reflective time. And like I say, Do not set intentions without first looking for the lessons and the wisdom. Because when you see how you are actually showing up how you've been showing up what your results tell you about how you've been showing up, then you've got practical, tangible evidence of what might need to shift to get a different result if you want a different result
next year. So all of the evidence and all of the clues about what we need to adjust what we need to change, what we need to apply is going to be there in the reflecting. And so how I set myself up is I do a whole month like December, I have been deep in reflection and I generally am a very reflective person. And so December it's like it all just culminates and
I have a few processes. And I have a whole sheet that I've been working on all month, which I am sharing to everyone who comes with me on the level up you're 2024 masterclass, which is in a couple of weeks time. And within this reflection, it's really about observing yourself and observing your patterns, but also looking back on the year for the clues that are there. And the clues are looking at things and going oh, that didn't actually feel good. Or I don't know if I really enjoyed that.
Or oh my god, what lit me up in 2023 had a consistent theme, or the people that I hung out with that really added value and sort of expanded me or made me feel lit up made me feel an overflow. There's a consistent theme there. Maybe I need to see more of those people. Maybe I need to see less of these people. Maybe I've been distracted a lot by the similar sorts of things. Maybe I've been distracted way
too much. And I haven't gotten the goals that I wanted to achieve or I just haven't shown up as the person I would like to. So there's so much wisdom that comes from reflecting because realistically your results tell you everything about what is working and what is not. I always say to clients like your results tell me everything I need to know your results. Tell me what mindset you have your results. Tell me what habits you prioritise your
results. Tell me what you value where you spend your time where you spend your energy. And of course there is always I'm going to contradict myself here. There is always a lag time sometimes when you are creating something new or you are moving towards something new you are becoming someone new. Of course there's got to be a lag time where your results haven't yet caught up with the work you're doing. But ultimately, your results share so much for you to see about what's working and what's not.
And until we look at that, and really start to observe and sort of break down the patterns and break down, what's working and what's not, the following year is going to be on autopilot. Because what we're currently doing and how we've been running the year is obviously the automated programme. And if it's automated, we need to interrupt it to create something new, we cannot interrupt it if we haven't brought it to the
forefront of our mind. So it is clear that it is there in our psyche, it is there in our attention, it is there so that when we see the old pattern playing out, we know exactly what to do to pattern interrupt and to choose something different, that is going to take us somewhere different. If you want something different next year, and you may not, you may actually look back on this year
and go, Wow, so fulfilled. So satisfied, just want to clean a few little bits up or maybe just want to finesse a few little things or revise a few things or, or maybe are in a season where you're like, actually next year, I want to slow down. And I'm going to be doing things a little bit differently. And watching your pattern where you find it hard to slow down. Like there's so many different ways
that this can play out. But ultimately, until you've done a massive reflection, and you've brought a magnifying glass over your patterns, your behaviours, your habits, and how you've been structuring, your week stays and tasks, you're gonna probably get the same results. And so I think it's really important that we spend some time before we do any kind of goal setting any kind of planning to really look at, okay, what have I been doing?
what's working, what's not? And how am I feeling, because you can keep creating goals, you can keep progressing, you can keep setting the New Year's intentions and you know, striving forward. But if you haven't taken the time to really sit with, is this currently feeling good to me, then you're going to repeat the same thing. And your ladder might be against the wrong wall. So it's one thing to start creating new goals and to start setting into
motion some new plans. But if your ladder is against the wrong wall, it's not going to feel good. And so I think it's really important. And sometimes it actually takes a lot of courage to be like, Oh, I might need to pivot a little bit, or what I thought I wanted, I didn't want or actually I'm going into a different season. And that's okay. So really, really, the reflection here or the the takeaway here is reflect on 2023. What is working, what is
not? How are you feeling what lit you up, what actually feels meaningful, and like you're on purpose and what feels like a distraction, what things have taken from your time and energy and what things have added to your time and energy. So like a whole overview of the year and how you're feeling and what lessons you've learned is how you take that lesson and you integrate it into next year before you start to set a plan.
Once you've done this, then you can start to go Okay, with this information with this pattern that I've identified with this behaviour that I've identified with this habit that I've noticed or a habit that I would like to get rid of how am I going to make a tangible action plan that integrates these lessons and turns it into wisdom. It's one thing to have lessons and to be like, Oh, I've learned this, I've learned this,
I've learned this. But if you don't make an action plan to create space for something new, or to delete the things that are distracting you, you're probably going to create the same pattern again and get the same results. So just to give an example of how I've sort of used this lead, taken a lesson. And I'm creating an actual plan that implements this into 2024. I have recognised for me that this year has felt kind of ungrounded a little bit because I've spent so much of this year. In other
places. I've feel like I really only was home for a few months at a time. And then I'd go again, which is amazing and incredible. And it is actually and this is where I'm saying doing reflecting on or am I still wanting the same things? Is this still aligning? Is it still feeling good? So that you're not on autopilot and being someone who you used to be without letting yourself evolve
and change. I have always been a real like a top value is freedom and adventure and love exploring the world and I created this business so that I could do that. And this year I've really
lived it. So I you know spent the year in Thailand and then I went down south to get married and we took a bit of time coming home and then I went to Bali for a while and came back for a little bit and went to Europe and this is beautiful stuff like I'm not by any stretch of the imagination, ungrateful or not completely aware of how fortunate and privileged and
blessed I am. But I've also noticed Do that for me, I have finished up the year feeling a little bit like I'm craving routine, I'm craving consistency. And I'm feeling almost like all of that freedom and all of that spontaneity almost has left me feeling unstructured. And that was leaving me to feel a little bit fried or scattered. And I do not like that feeling at all. And so what I'm doing with the lesson being that structure, for me is
a beautiful thing. And my soul is craving home, my soul is craving rhythm and routine, so that I can have a bit more freedom as well, because structure creates freedom. But I've really noticed that actually, all of this all over the place going here going there, it leaves me actually not feeling as good as it used to.
So I'm like, Okay, that's interesting, some things have changed, my values have shifted, I'm really not that one, the lusty kind of hippie wants to be a million places at once and not really cool anywhere home, that just doesn't resonate for me anymore. And so I've really had to look at Okay, so next year, what does this actually mean, I want a routine, I want a structure. And I have found it difficult to implement that this is complete honesty, I found it really difficult to implement
that this year. Because the truth is, when you run your own business, and you are the boss, and you can be a lot more relaxed, and if you sleep in, it's like, oh, go to the next class, or if you know, I get it done. And this is what I've noticed, I still get my non negotiables done. But there is almost too much flexibility. And
it's no longer feeling good. And so this is where I always talk about just clocking, there is always a time where something that was once a strength becomes a poison, and also a time where a poison can become a sweet. So it's just checking in with, okay, is this still working? Can we move the pendulum and for me, I was like, Okay, I've noticed I want more structure. So next year, I will be having a PT session at the same time, probably three to four times a
week, in the mornings. So that that is I have to be there, that there's someone waiting for me. And that's going to help me to integrate, integrate the lesson from 2024. So it's like, cool, it's one thing to have a lesson. But what are you actually going to do about it? How are you creating an actual tangible plan, which allows this lesson of 2023 to be implemented and transcended if there's something that you've noticed, you would
like to shift? So when, like I said, once you've got the lessons, and it might even be things like, Oh, I've realised I love seeing this person, or I really loved this part of my business call. Have you done your forward planner inside of your business to allow more space for the friends that are lighting you up to allow more of that offer that you have absolutely loved? Are you making plans that allow for the lessons to become turned into fruition
in 2024. And obviously, with that, there is so much that you can do to preempt any obstacles which might occur to clock limitations before they even come up and make plans to circumnavigate the
obstacles. And even just as a very sort of surface level example, if you have noticed, which a lot of my clients and friends and myself have had conversations around, just in the last couple of weeks, if you've noticed that your phone has slid back into your life a little more than you would like, or your phone is one of the main sources of distraction, which let's be honest, it is for a lot of us. That was something I
noticed last year. And so I started the year with a new alarm clock in my phone, sorry, a new alarm clock in my bedroom, my phone no longer sleeps in our bedroom. And so it's just these tiny little things where you can actually go okay, if if you've noticed a problem, what are you doing about it? Actually, it's one thing to look back on there and go, Oh, I didn't like this or I'm distracted by this or I'm really triggered here. Or I do this pattern. I do this thing.
Self awareness alone doesn't do shit. If you don't change something. Self awareness is step one in change. But a lot of people go oh, I haven't. So like I've felt I've, I've discovered I do this thing or I recognise my pattern or I see how I'm doing this I can, I can observe
it. Great. That's step one. Change is seeing it a million times and choosing differently, and then actively choosing to put things in place to create new habits, routines, structures, and opportunities to create a new neural pathway to create a new habit and to create a new process internally and externally, and so on. All of this is to say how I prepare for 2024. And I'm doing actually an episode next week with diesel where we're doing like a dear diary kind of wrap up and
reflection. How I plan for 2024 is a little bit different this year, and I have found that to be a little bit challenging, I'm not gonna lie. I'm still going through this exact same process. I'm still doing my reflections. I'm aligning and reassessing my values. I'm reassessing everything. I'm noticing what has worked and what hasn't. I'm
putting things in place. I'm going right now to go find a PT, potential potentially going to get a dog not entirely sure yet, but this is just random side note, Paul and I have both noticed both noticed a pattern like I say, here's the pattern. Every single year since I've left my teaching job, I always find myself getting a little bit nostalgic this time of year, and
a little bit sad. You know, I see all my colleagues, I see all my ex colleagues and friends who are doing the Christmas parties and the valedictory celebrations and graduating with their students. And I'm just like, Oh, I miss that. Like I miss my colleagues, I miss my humans, I miss my students, I miss people in my life. And sometimes it's always this time of year on my arm, I feel a bit lonely sitting here in my office. And I've said
that a few times. And so Paul and I have been going or is it maybe time to get a dog, I am going to be home, that's not changing. I have an online business. That's the reality, but starting to put things in place for next year so that this pattern doesn't continue. And I don't feel a little bit lonely. You know, by the end of the year, I call that's a lot of time near my laptop, without physical one on one, you know, touch. And so next year, like I said, What am I going to do
about it? Well, first of all, the mind school method certification is in person. And that is so important to me because of my values. And what patterns I've noticed, I were going to look at puppies still not on 100%, I'm finding a P T, I'm doing all the things to put in place, things that I've observed that I want to change
and get different results. And I'm also allowing for whatever will happen that's outside of my control, which next year and even a lot of this year, I've been hoping to fall pregnant. And so just complete transparency, as much as I'm planning things. And I'm, you know, going into the year with intention and focus, and I know what my priorities are and what my values are and what I'll be doing differently, I also have to be open to surrender. And I have to be fluid, and I have to
be adaptable. And that's a little bit challenging. And so I just share that for anyone who's listening who's sort of, you know, I hear this kind of thing for people who, for example, have a business and it's like, well, I'm hoping to be by here at this stage, by this by this stage, but I might not be. Or I'd like to leave my job by June, but it depends. And so in some regards, it's like let's
make a plan. But make the plan know your intentions and be open to fluidity and surrender and know that you can handle whatever changes come and just readjust as you need to reflection is really not something that should just be done every New Year's like, I really think if you've waited to New Year's, you've probably
waited far too long. I think reflection is something that you can be doing every moment every day, noticing yourself noticing what's working, noticing things are noticing your behaviours and your patterns and your triggers and your projections and, and noticing what's lighting you up and what's draining your energy like this should be a reflective practice that you just do. But of course, this is a beautiful time of year to be doing it with intention before we go into the
new year. But if you are in that same boat as me where it's like, well, there's only so much I can control and the rest is up to surrender. Just being someone who's constantly reflecting and constantly pivoting and constantly allowing for change is just such a beautiful thing because it means that you don't live asleep, you don't live on autopilot. You don't wake up one year and go oh my god, three years has passed and I hate my job or five years have passed and what the heck have I been
doing. It's about living with intention and to live with intention means to be reflective. And I think to live with intention means to be very intentional and purposeful in your actions in how you show up in how you present to the world and the habits that you enact, you know mentally and physically and all of the ways and also being open to pivoting and
changing when you need to. So wherever you're at at the end of this year, I hope that you are really looking forward to some soul filling time whatever that means to you. I hope that you're looking forward to a bit of reflection, if you would love to join me and all the level up going to do our our reflection and then our workshop and our plan and our action steps and all of that. The link is in the show notes for you to join us.
It's going to be really fun and as soon as you join up, you will get that reflection sheet that I've that I've shared And then I've talked about it's been so helpful for me I will see you back here next week for the very last episode of 2023 have a beautiful beautiful Christmas and I will see you next week
