Merry Christmas everybody! On this episode, I go through an excerpt of "Better Than I Found It" by Baylor Head Coach Mike McGraw. This particular passage struck me as so important for everyone to hear. If we can all on some level focus more on the process and less on the result then we can be more free and have more fun along the journey. Thanks for listening! I talk with Boston University Head Women's Golf Coach Bruce Chalas to talk about his philosophies on the mental game and how individuals improve differently from each other. Coach Chalas is a counterintuitive thinker, something that a lot of golf coaches aren't because they're afraid they might say something wrong. Coach Chalas is more interested in the long-term improvement of the person rather than the short-term good scores, yet his coaching has produced some awesome results! Thank you for tu...

A guest! For the first time ever on the show I have a guest, and this one is very special. Coach Mike McGraw spent 16 years coaching at Oklahoma State, a handful of years under Jay Seawell at Alabama, and is now the head coach at Baylor. Coach McGraw has won 3 NCAA championships, coached players such as Hunter Mahan, Charles Howell III, and Rickie Fowler, and his list of accomplishments goes on and on. Try to ignore me and pay attention to what Coach McGraw says because he is so wise. Thanks for...

You know the feeling. You're playing a round of golf. You're playing well for several holes. But inevitably you encounter some kind of difficulty, whether you hit a bad shot or you drew a bad lie in the rough or you have a long par 3 with a tucked pin or you're coming down to the wire at the end of a tournament. This happens pretty much every round. It's very rare that a round of golf goes perfectly smoothly from start to finish without any hiccups. But that event happening doesn't define you. I...

This one is about learning to have a good time even when you don't feel like it. To enjoy where you're at even if you don't really wanna be there. I've learned a lot over my 16 years of playing competitive golf. From treading water from age 12 to age 25, to learning so much about myself under Robert Linville and Precision Golf School from age 25 until now at age 28, I have caught at least a glimpse of the value of mental coaching. And it helped me so much I decided to make it a life goal of mine to help other players learn the same things. Sometimes you have to look hard at yourself. Actually, all the time you have to look hard at yourself. You have to constantly deploy self-awareness against yourself. And when I do, I realize that I have been leaning to heavily on my own past experience and not pushing myself hard enough to evolve my knowledge and improve. Like I said in Part 1, my goal is to normalize mental coaching to the point that going to see a mental coach is the default for a struggling golfer. So if I have an ambition as...

In the middle of the biggest moment of my playing career I abandoned my routine. The same routine that I had been diligently doing for over a year before it. I did this because I just wanted to be present and soak in the cool moment. But what I didn't realize was that sticking to my process was HOW I would've enjoyed the moment even more. I challenge you to find me something more important in golf than the next shot. It doesn't exist. Some might argue the last shot is more important, because where you are is a result of that shot. But that shot has no bearing on you anymore. There is only one shot that you can have an affect on. And that's the next one. If you have any questions I'd love to hear em! On this 10th episode of The Mental Golf Show, it's my anniversary! So it brings me back to the time when my perspective truly shifted. I used to play golf with blinders on, and nothing else mattered. But once I learned to release control and let go of the result (which for me came as a result of meeting my then future wife Kayla) I began to improve at a much quicker pace and play better and win tournaments. Your perspective doesn't have to come as a result of meeting your significant other, but ...

I've done a little research on Gary Woodland since he won the U.S. Open last Sunday. I didn't know this but in 2012 and 2013 he made a change to his agent, swing instructor, AND hired a new mental coach. These changes paid off relatively quickly by him winning some tournaments in the next year. But the big payoff took quite a long time. It was 6 YEARS before he finally won a major, despite being a regular player expected to win. He took his time, never lost his perspective, and it paid off. And ...

5 minutes? More like 5 years. Patience and playing the long game. I believe this is a universal principle for success. But obviously it is not a "get rich quick scheme" or "7 steps to playing better golf". And that's the point. It is a marathon, and it requires patience. Behind every great player is an anonymous stretch of hours and weeks and months and years of hard work. I'm reluctant to prescribe tactics and tips, but I am fully committed to pushing players and people into believing in core t...
