The Meaning Project

Dr. Daniel A. Franzwww.danielafranz.com
The Meaning Project - the intersection of Mental Health and Meaning. In this podcast, Dr. Daniel A Franz, speaker, consultant, and psychotherapist, discusses the art and science behind forms of organizational health, counseling and psychotherapy, psychological theory, and tons of other ideas related to Mental Health and Meaning; all through the lens of Logotherapy & Existential Analysis - the psychology of Meaning. Brief, so that you can get a helpful dose of mental health on your way to work. Unedited, because neither life nor psychotherapy are edited, and action-oriented, because we could talk about your childhood all day long, but that isn’t going to help you discover meaning in your day, or help you address the tension between who you are now, and who you want to become. It's my hope that this podcast will.

TMP-Ep22 - Tragic Optimism in Today's World

In this episode, we take a concept directly out of the pages of Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" and expand on it for use to cope with the suffering in today's world. Tragic Optimism is optimism "in spite" of suffering - and ways to turn that suffering into achievement. I hope you find this helpful!

TMP-Ep21 - Alex Vesely: Logotherapist, Director, & Grandson of Viktor Frankl

Alex Vesely is an established Logotherapist, the director of the movie Viktor and I - a collection of recollections of friends of Dr. Frankl's, and a founder of the Viktor Frankl Institue of America, as well as the grandson of Viktor Frankl. In this podcast, I have the privilege of talking to him about his upcoming projects, the digitalization of the Frankl archives, and, or course, what it was like growing up with the founder of Logotherapy. Enjoy!

TMP-Ep19 - Crystal Whitlow: Helping Anxiety and Trauma with EMDR

EMDR - Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing - a fancy way of saying "bi-lateral stimulation", which is a fancy way of saying "making your eyes move back and forth"... I've referred MANY clients to EMDR specialists, and this almost the way I explained the process to them... Crystal, not just a practitioner, but a trainer in EMDR, teaches me all about EMDR, and discusses how helpful it can be for "Big T" Trauma, as well as "Little t" trauma - which is something we all may be struggling wi...

TMP-Ep16 - Logotherapy in a Nutshell part 3: On Suffering

In this episode, we wrap up the basics of Frankl's Logotherapy in a Nutshell, covering some of the more difficult, yet meaningful aspects of life - suffering and death. With that, I offer a few of my favorite, more inspiring quotes from that section of Man's Search for Meaning.

TMP-Ep15 - Logotherapy in a Nutshell part 2: The Meaning of Life

We continue to discuss Logotherapy in a Nutshell from Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. In this episode we take a deep look at a few brief statements on The Meaning of Life, The Essence of Existence, and The Meaning of Love. Frankl wrote prolifically on these ideas throughout his life - however in Man's Search for Meaning, these were only brief ideas as he was working so quickly to get them down on paper. In this episode we expand on those original statements. And, for those of you who listen a...

TMP-Ep14 - Logotherapy in a Nutshell part 1: Noö-dynamics

Back to some of the basics of Logotherapy straight out of Man's Search for Meaning. We talk about the noös, noö-dynamics, noögenic neuroses, and all things noetic, while I try to find ways to add more umlauts to my work! A little bit of reading from the book, and a lot of me riffing from my experience and training. Enjoy!

TMP-Ep13 - The Myers Briggs Type Indicator Global Complete

A much more thorough discussion on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) now that I've completed 4 days of certification training. I called this episode "Global Complete" because that is one of the full-process versions of the assessment you can take (there's a discount offer in the podcast, as well as on my facebook page), but also because it feels like we cover that much content on the MBTI in this podcast! If you were interested before, there is a whole lot more information here! I walk you ...

TMP-Ep12 - Desperation, Redemption, & Recovery with Chad P.

We continue our discussion on substance abuse, recovery, and meaning, in a discussion with Chad P. His story of absolute desperation at a very young age could be the story of many adolescents today. Chad fought treatment and help for a long time, until it was the only option left. Once he made that decision, as you'll hear him say, his life was forever changed in a very meaningful way. Enjoy!

TMP-Ep11 - Discussion on Suffering, Substance Abuse, & Meaning w/ Sarah D.

In the early days of my career, I worked with adolescents in an "innovative and successful" intensive substance abuse treatment program. I think this may have been the first place I started to understand the concept of "meaning" as it relates to human suffering and substance abuse. In this episode, Sarah and I discuss her history of substance use, chronic illness, and how she has transcended both over the past 16+ years.

TMP-Ep10 - Substance Use & Abuse

I've been working with substance abusing clients and teaching theories in the treatment of addictions for nearly 20 years. In this episode, I share some of that experience for those who may be questioning if they, or somebody they care about, might have a problem. I also share some resources I found fascinating in the study of the history of criminalization of various substances.

TMP-Ep9 - Curahee & So Live Your Life

Curahee!! "Three miles up - three miles down!" I'm heading out for a meaningful experience with good friends. I think this is something we all need to do more often - it's too easy to focus on work or responsibility when 'meaning' knocks on our door. What is life asking of you right now - where are the opportunities for you to find meaning? A brief discussion on how I am choosing meaning in this moment, and an example of how it may have been found for others. Enjoy!

TMP-Ep8 - MBTI I/E & J/P

A simple overview of two of the often misunderstood components of the Myers-Brigg Type Indicator (MBTI) - Introversion compared to Extroversion, and then Perceiving compared to Judging. This is the "grad school" version of my understanding of the MBTI - what I was equipped with from school, and had used for the past 20 years. This podcast was recorded just prior to going through 4 days of credentialing work with the Myers Briggs Institute - to say that my understanding of these ideas has changed...
