We have a huge show for you tonight.
A veteran FBI officer is here to break down the latest in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Plus we have the number three Republican in the House of Representatives, Whip Tom Emmer, here to bring us inside the battle to keep the Department of Homeland Security open, and Texas Congressman Chip Roy is fighting for voter id and to stop illegals from voting. He'll discuss that plan with us this hour.
And we've got news on the radical left turn in Virginia and an incredible story about mountain lions living in urban areas. It's all next to the Matt Gates Show.
Let's do this shaking up Washington, d C. We're breaking the fever.
Do you ever watch this guy on television.
It's like a machine.
He's great.
Matt Gates.
Washington d C is three days away from allowing funding to lapse for the very important Department of Homeland Security. A deal to save DHS funding only comes together if Democrats agree to extend funding for the agency, or if Republicans use a nuclear option and go at it alone with a tool called budget reconciliation. Tonight, we're going to examine the state of play in those negotiations. We have two of the top members of the Republican majority here
with us to break it down. We also need to realize the impact of the game of legislative chicken being played by Senate Democrats. DHS is not some government office that prints pamphlets about recycling. This is the department that guards the border, screens terror threats, stops fentanyl, and keeps planes in the air. When dh IS funding lapses, the country doesn't pause, it bleeds. While politicians argue the cartels,
they don't take a recess. CBP has seized more than one hundred thousand pounds of fentanyl since twenty twenty one. That's enough to kill the entire US population several times over. Roughly seventy thousand Americans die each year from fentanyl overdoses. It's the leading cause of death for young adults. So if you want fewer agents screening, fewer vehicles inspections, fewer interdictions, that's what you get with what Senate Democrats are offering.
Drug traffickers. They're watching too. They hear funding laps and obviously plan a big push when we are vulnerable. Then there's aviation security TSA screens about two and a half million passengers per day. During prior shutdowns, absenteeism spiked, unpaid officers understandably stay at home, Lines stretched for hours, flights were delayed, commerce slowed. Democrats know that they know they don't need a full shut down to dampen the economic
progress Trump has willed into existence. They just need to shut down air travel in America's productivity plummets. Apparently, grounding the economy is now some sort of DC negotiating tactic. And that's because chaos is the Democrat tactic. Look at what they're cheerleading in the streets.
You all have decided that this resistance is not one that can be intimidated. We know that we are here to stay and this is our country.
I sound all.
Ill.
It's pretty obvious this is a political movement that you wouldn't trust to run a Chuck E Cheese, much less the country. And if the Department of Homeland Security shuts down, don't forget the impact on cybersecurity, DHS, monitors, election systems, pipelines, hospitals, power grids. In an era where China, Russia, Iran, and criminal syndicates, probe US networks daily. Defending cyber is key, and stopping because of a fight over ice is like turning off the locks at your house because you're mad
at the landlord. Here's the cruel irony. DHS employees are disproportionately law enforcement veterans, frontline operators. These are the people politicians claim they respect, yet a funding lapse tells them to do their job, don't get paid, and don't complain. Try that strategy in the private sector and see how long your company survives. If the Democrats shut down strategy succeeds, they've literally defunded the police. National sovereignty isn't optional. Border
security isn't a bargaining chip. Law enforcement isn't a suggestion. President Trump understood that a country without borders, without enforcement, without consequences is not a country. It is a shopping mall with no doors. Let's be honest. The people least harmed by DHS labs are the ones voting for it. The people most harmed are working families, border communities, overdose victims, travelers,
small businesses, and cops standing post without a paycheck. If Congress can't fund DHS, then Congress admitting it can't perform a basic function protecting the nation. Everything else is noise. You can argue about climate programs, art grants, better study committees later, but when the department that stops terrorists, traffickers, and transnational crime is left twisting in the wind, it's not politics.
It's treason. Here with us now? Is the House Majority Whip?
Minnesota Republican Tom Emmer, Mister Whip, what can you tell us about the negotiations to keep the Department of Homeland Security funded?
Well, it's over in the Senate. As you know, Matt, the House did its job.
We passed a complete funding bill, and Senate over there weeks ago the Democrats backed out of a deal that they had in the Senate and they refused to pass it, claiming that this was about reforms for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation. The problem with that argument, Matt, is you probably already know and your viewers know, is that we've funded the Immigration and Customs enforcement officers through the end of President Trump's term.
All literally what the Democrats are doing yet again as.
They're holding America hostage and more importantly, the Coastguard tsa disaster relief through FEMA these are the things that they're trying to hold up in an effort to get unreasonable demands, one of which is this extra warrant judicial warrant requirement that would just be mass amnesty for illegals. Man, it's a no go, So our bill's over there. We believe they should just pass that bill and get on with it.
Mister Whippitt reminds me of the fable of the whipping Boy, where when one child is bad, the punishers whip a different child. And it seems like what you're describing is the Democrats wanting to make our air traffic controllers, our TSA officers, our cybersecurity professionals at the Department of Homeland Security the whipping boy for ice. How do you think the country is going to react to that strategy, Well.
I think once you have major airports like Atlanta and in New York and other places, once they start running into shortages of people and it starts tying up travel for tens of millions of people, once you start having disaster relief that's not being provided, once people start to feel the real effects of what these Democrats are doing. Yet again, man, I don't think it's going to have
a good result for him. I love the mainstream lain stream media that tries to report that the first forty three days shutdown actually worked out for Democrats.
It didn't do a darn thing for them.
In fact, it hurt the American people, and the American public knows that.
Man.
So, look, we need to get the Homeland Security funded. The part that they want to fight about is already funded. Now is not the time for that fight. Now is the time to fund TSA, It's time to fund disaster relief. It's time to fund our coastguard.
Matt. Yeah, you represent Minnesota proudly. Are things they're getting better or worse right now?
Well, they're quiet, which is good, and hopefully they're getting better. Tom Holman's doing a nice job of trying to ratchet down the rhetoric. The problem is you've got a complete lack of leadership in our state, and when you've got a governor who thinks he's Jefferson Davis calling on the troops to battle with federal law enforcement. Matt, Not only is that the wrong thing to do, it's a completely
contrary to what this republic is based on. In this case, the federal government is responsible for enforcing those immigration laws if there was some cooperation at the local level with federal law enforcement. I think Tom Homan said it best. You want our officers off your streets, then let us in your jails. Let them take the worst of the worst out. We're talking about rapists, We're talking about murders, We're talking about pedophiles and drug dealers. Matt, we need
these people off the streets. President Trump promised but a safe America, and he's delivering, and these guys are standing in the way. It's kind of not coincidental, by the way, that it's all blue state led estates that are fighting with President Trump.
Immigration was a really good issue for congressional Republicans in the last election because a lot of moderate swing voters would not abide the open borders policies of the Biden Harris administration. Do you think that Republicans and swing districts are going to be running on immigration enforcement as a top line issue in the upcoming midterms.
I think they're going to be running on safety and security without a doubt.
Man.
I know that a lot of people like to say, right now, oh, this is turned against Republicans and President Trump.
It hasn't at home.
Here's what I'm hearing in a place where we had two tragic shootings that nobody wants that sort of thing to happen, and they will do full investigations. But when I'm hearing at home, thank President Trump. We want the federal officers here. There are people offering to feed them, there are people offering to house them. Do they have some concerns about the methods that are being used. Of
course they do. And that's the part where Congress is leaning in and making sure that people there's appropriate supervision and training the going on it. By the way, bill that they're holding up over in the Senate, it's got thirty million dollars Senate, which includes money for training, and it includes money for body cameras.
Amazing.
Yeah, the things they want they won't accept, but instead they want to punish people who have really no stake in what ails them. You led the Republican Congressional campaign arm before becoming the Whip of the House. You've run for House Speaker before I voted for you for Speaker and House Conference. What is the message that you think Republicans will be bringing on the economy to the districts that will decide whether or not a Republican or Democrat will be Speaker in twenty twenty seven.
Wow, it's going to be all about the economy. First off, the fundamentals are with us.
Matt.
Back in twenty eighteen, Donald Trump's first midterm, we were defending over twenty of our members who were in steets that Hillary Clinton had won. In twenty sixteen, guess what, the whole map is flipped. There are now sixteen Democrats sitting in seats that Donald Trump won. There are only seven Republicans in four of those are in California. By the way, I don't think we're going to lose all four of those in California, but that remains.
To be seen. At the end of the day, it will be about the economy. Barring some global disruption.
It's going to be about whether people feel better today than they did yesterday and whether they see a brighter future. And just think about that nonpartisan CBO that told us if you passed that big, beautiful bill also known as the Working Families Tax Cut back in July, we were going to project They projected one point eight percent GDP growth over the next ten years. Forget for a second that the nonpartisan CBO didn't point out that we've never
grown at less than two percent. Guess what, Matt, before the bill ever became law on January first of this year.
Third quarter last year was four point three percent growth.
Fourth quarter last year was reported at four point four It's been revised down a bit. They are now saying the first quarter this year is going to be five percent or better. If that continues, which I expect it's going to. Republicans are in a great position to hold the House come the fall.
If we get GDP growth to five percent and it doesn't come with a big inflationary spike, I think that bodes very well for the Red Team. Tom Emmer, the Whip of the House, the former leader of the Republican campaign arm in Congress, thanks so much for joining us and for bringing us up to speed.
Thank you, Matt.
Take care, good seeing you, and coming up.
We have a cautionary tale from the Commonwealth of Virginia where there was just an effort signed by the governor of that commonwealth to steal Republican contractgressional districts. It's right out of the Gavin Newsom playbook. And we'll tell you all about it. Plus, Congressman Chip Roy is with us later in the show to talk about his effort to secure elections with the Save Act.

The Commonwealth of Virginia. We're gonna follow Virginia very closely because months ago it had Apublican governor Glenn Younkin, and now it has a Democrat governor, Abigail Spamberger. Unlike New York City, where a new mayor'son on Mom Dami says stuff.
Like this, it was elected as a Democratic socialist and I will govern as a Democratic Socialist.
Governor.
Spamberger campaigned to be a moderate, middle of the road type, not one of the Democrats who wanted to take away your guns and your money while transit your kids. But the political science lesson here is that there really aren't any moderates left in the Democratic Party. Any elected Democrat once they get into office, they end up swallowing the socialist agenda whole Listen to firearms expert Patrick Parsons describe what they're doing to gun owners, and.
Like og colonial Virginia.
No less elections have consequences. They are going for the kill. It is their number one issue in Richmond. There's a bill called SB seven four nine, introduced by a guy named Saddam Selim from Bangladesh Northern Virginia.
It is a so called assault.
Weapons ban and magazine ban, and we could keep going further into it, but they're going They're going for it all, and we're fighting them and trying to stop it.
That's scary.
But the biggest power graph coming out of Virginia might not be the woke left coming for your guns. They're actually coming for your Republican majority in Congress, and they've gone full Gavin Newsom to do it. Virginia Democrats recently released a new congressional map that would make ten of the eleven congressional seats blue. For context, In the last presidential election, about four point four million people voted in Virginia.
Of those four point four million, about two point one million voted for Trump, just under half.
So I want to state, with.
Two point one million Trump voters out of four point four million people, they're gonna have ten Democrats representing them in Congress and one Republican. Is this what democracy looks like? The map leverages Democrats strength in Northern Virginia and Richmond by spreading those voters into multiple rural districts to make them democrat leaning. It is an extreme partisan gerrymander. The redistricting proposal has tied to a constitutional amendment that would
let Virginia in their General Assembly redraw the maps. That's something normally done after a census. So will the promise of moderation in Virginia actually lead to the extreme left control of the United States Congress for years? Joining US now Republican Virginia State Senator Bryce Reeves.
Senator Rea, good to see you.
Good to see you again as well. Now the Democrats and the Commonwealth want to draw these maps. They would put part of northern Virginia into a lot of rural districts. What kind of challenge does that put on lawmakers just representing their constituents.
It's going to be very difficult. The seventh district, which is our new governor. She used to represent my senatorial district and she, you know, it was a mix between some rural and some suburban areas. But now you have Arlington all the way down into my district and over the mountain and all the way down to Goochland County near Richmond, and it makes no sense at all.
It's funny that we're.
Talking about this right now. Matt I just got off the floor just a little bit ago, and they passed Senateville twenty nine, which is a Kaboosville adding all that, but you're not gonna believe what they did.
They took out the voters' rights at They.
Took out all the protections to make sure they had minority majority districts and all these things. They wiped that out of the actual bill. Language stripped it for years, they fought for it, and then all of a sudden they decide they're going to strip it out. So they are doing everything possible to lie, cheat and steal to make this stuff happen.
I used to live in Virginia. I know in a way it's like three different states. Northern Virginia so different than the Hampton Roads area, so different than some of the mountain country and hills of Appalachia that are in Virginia. Wondering, like, are the voters ticked off that you're gonna have some some voter in uh, rural Virginia. Whose member of Congress is going to be like living in northern Virginia. Is that has that sunk in for people in the Commonwealth.
I think what's really sunk in at least for the seventh district that they've just newly drawn, which was Abigail Spendeberger as district And the guy that they drew that that district for is.
A guy named Dan Helmer.
And Dan Helmer right now is the is a former West Point graduate, if you can believe this, and carried the assault weapons band that just passed the Senate. It's already passed the House, but it passed the Senate today on purely partisan vote. And so that's going to be our representation for rural Virginia that I represent.
That's not going to go over that well.
Now and after seeing this, after seeing what Democrats did in Virginia, I wonder if you have a reaction to what Indiana Republicans did. They had the op opportunity to play the Democrats game alongside them and to squeeze some more Republican representation out of the Hoosier state. They decided to be Midwest nice instead. What would you say to the folks who made that decision.
I would say I understand where they are because the majority of Republicans think like that. We think, hey, let's play fair, let's keep our moral compass.
Let's not do that.
To the left, well, they don't understand the enemy to which they face. The Democrats are diametrically opposed to everything we believe in, everything from gun rights to birth of a child after it's been born or tried to be aborted, and they won't keep it alive.
So let me just tell my colleagues in Indiana. I know you were trying to do.
The right thing, but you really did a disservice and you did a huge disservice to the Republican Party on that one, because quite frankly, they're going to shove it down your throats when they get an opportunity.
To do it, and they won't even look twice at it.
Yeah, they just did it to you in Virginia.
I don't know that there's anywhere in the country where life is changing as fast as it is in Virginia with this big swing with Spamberger's governorship. How are some of your constituents going to feel that change in the coming months.
Matt, They already feel it.
I've got hundreds you know, we're in sessions, so I'm getting hundreds of emails a day about Hey, I'm done, We're going to move.
It's not worth it.
We can't take these fifty plus taxes they're putting through all these things.
And I'll tell you something.
I had an conversation just this week or last week, I think it was Thursday. We had a dinner with the National Guard, and she kind of came up behind
me and ambushed me. And I was talking to a senior master chief at the time, and she didn't like my Washington Times interview I did where I was pretty want about what she's done so far and how she within a matter of hours, broke the agreement we had eighty seven g with our state police, working with our national law enforcement to make sure that Virginia is saved from these MS thirteen. Anyway, you get it, and she pretty much and you know her, you served with her.
She's a great CIA operative, right.
She pulls you in confidence, all nice and then she destroys you. That's what she loves doing. But anyway, she said, I.
Don't like it, And I said, well, madame governor, you have an opportunity to really prove if you're going to be a moderate now are you're going to govern so far you're governing far far left. Well, she can't run from it anymore like she hid from it in Congress. She's going to have those bills put on her desk back you know this, and she's either gonna have to sign them or veto them, or you know, send them back to committee or something.
But she's great at dodging questions. And she got out of there. She I teled it out of There's what she could.
Well, we're glad that you're fighting for regular folks who want some common sense. A Virginia Republican Senator Bryce Reeves, thanks for coming on the program and bringing us up to speed.
Matt, thank you, and thank you for what you do again, brother, Thank you, thank you, thank you for making the rest of America understand what the heck it is we're dealing with there.
Well, we appreciate you.
I think it's a real warning to the rest of the country what can happen if you make this kind of change.
But we're glad we got some fighters there for us.
Thanks Matt, appreciate your time.
Thank you. In coming up, we've got Texas Congressman Chip Roy here to update us on his efforts to pass the Save Act. It is the critical voter ID legislation that can stop illegal aliens from polluting our elections. Plus, we've got a former FBI agent here to break down the latest on the disappearance of the mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie.
It's all next to the Matt Gates Show.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, is a critically important piece of legislation to secure our elections. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, POP said the Chamber will vote on the SAVE Act next week. It builds on an original proposal by adding photo ID to vote along with proof of citizenship for voter registration. Elections Attorney Cleta Mitchell told us how important this is.
Pretty Five states allow student IDs to be for voting, and you know you don't have to be a citizen to get a student ID. So we need to get rid of all those things like the utility bill or a bank statement. We need to have a photo ID issued to citizens only that it says citizen right there on the front of the ID.
The SAVE Act previously passed the House of Representatives, but it's stalled in the Senate. Now there are signs of life in the Senate. A Democrat, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, said there's nothing wrong with asking for an ID to vote.
And how me, as a Democrat, I do not believe that it's unreasonable or to show ID just to vote. It's not a radical idea for regular Americans to show your ID to vote. And it's absolutely those things are not Jim Crow or anything.
Non Citizen voting must be shut down, and it happens way more than you think. Just last month, two men, Mohammed Mazamal and Mohammed Shakiel were indicted in New Jersey for falsely attesting to US citizenship when registering and casting ballots in the twenty twenty election. They also made false statements about US citizenship on their applications.
Also last month, a man.
Living in Michigan pleaded guilty to illegal voting by aliens, which, by the way, is a great sounding statutes. He also made false statements on a passport and citizenship applications. You literally assumed someone else's identity to vote. Late last year, Canadian citizen Dennists Brouchard was indicted in North Carolina for illegally registering and voting in federal elections in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty four despite.
Never obtaining US citizenship.
An Alabama woman was sentenced to five years for voting fraud and passport fraud for assuming another person's identity and using it to vote in multiple elections. So, how does the US House leverage the Senate to pass the Save Act? Joining us now Republican Texas Congressman and candidate for Texas Attorney General, Chip Roy. So, Chip, where do the negotiations stand right now on the Save Act?
Well, Matt just came out of Rules Committee where we're moving through the Save America Act. As you know, we took the original Save Act, which focused on citizenship. We added to it a very common sense, a highly popular voter ID provision, and put those two together be the Save America Act. Working with President Trump in the White House, we're waiting to get through the Rules Committee tonight, get it to the Florida marwork the rule, and move it
off the House floor. We believe as early as tomorrow evening. Then it would get to the Senate, and then it's just a question of getting majority of Leader Thom to
recognize that the Bilibuster rules in the Senate. While I support and think they're important as the cooling saucer, you got to make them actually speak, make them do Miss Smith goes to Washington, make them go to the Florida Senate and explain to the American people why they do not port voter identification and then only American citizens should vote in American elections. Let them explain it. I think
we should force them to do that. We'll see what Majority Leader Thune does, but we hope to move this bill by tomorrow night.
It does sound like you're confident about passage in the House. I know at times anything that's that's regarding election integrity or immigration in any kind is sometimes pulling teeth to get together. But Senator Fetterman a Democrat, so there's no problem asking for voter ID. Do you think there is a single House Democrat who holds Senator Fetterman's views.
Well, you know, when we passed the SAYAC, which again was the citizenship portion last Congress, we had five Democrats who joined us in last year when we passed the SAMAC, it had four Democrats. Now we've taken that bill added voter I D We'll see if that if they're going to be superpartisan about it. But it's a really tough vote, and Senator Fetterman's exactly right. This pulls it ninety something percent among Republicans, seventy one percent among Democrats, eighty three
percent overall. It's high podca among Blacks, Hispanics, Whites, rurals, Urbans. It just doesn't matter. Everybody thinks it's common sence. Look, we're a nation of laws. We're a nation of people who are bound together as a sovereign nation that should actually believe that only citizens should vote, and you should have to show idea. You have to show ID to get on a plane, you have to show ID to buy a gun, you have to show ID to buy booze. You got to show an ID to do pretty much anything.
What do you go to sporting events these days? So this is common sense, and we hope that it will pass the House tomorrow, and we believe it will. But the trick here is forcing the Senate to do work, and people don't understand Senate rules. It's our cane. But literally, all we're asking them to do is go to the floor, demand a vote and make Democrats speak against it. Don't just check a box and say sorry, we don't have sixty.
Yeah, you know the Senate better than any House member, because your Senator Cruz is former Chief of Staff Senator Cruz supporting you now in your campaign for attorney general. What is the countervailing pressure on pun Because what you've said makes a whole lot of sense. Are there are there some of these old guard Republicans in the Senate who don't want to make the Democrats stand up and explain why they're against voter ID.
Yeah, so I think the short version is this for people don't understand it. But you've always had the rules in the Senate that if someone wants to get up and speak, they can be heard. There's only three things that can be happening in the Senate, figuring out whether you've got a quorum, quorum call, speaking on the floor, or voting.
That's it.
So what we're saying is, take fifty one senators go to the floor and say, hey, we have this crazy idea. We think voter ID and citizenship is important. Let's pass it and then make the Democrats go, whohoa, we don't want to do it, stand up and speak. Instead of defaulting to something that was adopted in this century, it wasn't in the original rules that said no, you have to have sixty votes to shut off debate. So we don't change the rules. You can still shut off debate
with sixty. What we're saying is make them earn it, make them shut off debate by debating, and then force them to do it. The countervailing argument is, well, there going to offer lots of amendments.
They're going to make it.
Really hard, and they're going to drag out time. And my argument is, go work and just vote to table all the amendments. If you're disciplined and you force them to do it, you'll win the message, you'll win the hearts of the American people, and you might just actually pass a bill or you've done your work.
Yeah, that may be the reason.
I wonder allowed whether or not, Like when you have people like Mitch McConnell in the Senate who cannot stand up and orate for hours at a time, they wouldn't support a change and how the rules are interpreted so that they just couldn't put their their emperor modern of opposition and filibuster on things they don't like. Do you think that that may weigh on Leader Thune's decision.
On this, Yeah, of course, And I think that's a key issue here is the way they currently do business. They put the Senate in a quorum call, which means just since they're silent, they go and talk, and they go to fundraisers, and they go do their Senate things, get jello at the Senior Home. Then they come back over to the Senate and then they go, Okay, let's do a vote. Now that we've all decided what the vote's going to look like, but we can't amend it.
But it's only done if somebody's decided in a smoky room, then we're going to get it done. It's not the greatest delibrity of body in the world anymore. But there's another reason that some are hiding, and they're hiding behind federalism. Now, Matt, I'm a federalism guy. I like to leave stuff to the states. I don't like the federal government making laws, doing things to interfere with us. However, the Constitution of the United States is very clear Congress has a direct
role in our elections. Federal elections, yes, the state can determine them, and the Constitution says so, but it also says we can. When you're talking about the federal elections, Congress and the White House, the President. So we believe there's a direct federal issue. In addition to our role on immigration, our role is very clear on deciding who are citizens or not. So this is the perfect issue for us to be able to speak with one voice for voter ID and citizenship.
Yeah, and by the way, if people want to make the federalism argument, you've already said, get up and make it argue till you're blue in the face.
It's just the way they killed your bill last time was the good.
Old boys way where they stuck in a drawer and said, well, someone here objects, and we don't have sixty votes. Right now, you are in the middle of an election in Texas. You're the leading candidate for attorney general. If this doesn't pass, what will you do as attorney general of Texas to stop illegal aliens from voting?
Well, look, the opposite of attorney general is a critically important office to make sure that we protect our sovereignty is the state of Texas. And look, we can make sure we're enforcing the rules and the laws in Texas. We can also challenge federal law that interferes. Like, for example, one of the current opinions the Court opinions says that states are unable to actually go check their voter rules to make sure that they are citizens. I think we
should stop that. So you've got in states like Arizona that are running two systems, one where they check citizenship for their state local elections, but they don't for federal So I think there's room for the Office of Attorney General to be challenging that and to make sure we're enforcing all of our rules in Texas. But the most important thing is keeping people out who shouldn't be the and enforcing the laws of the state to make sure we're working with ICE to get our local jurisdictions and
removing people who shouldn't be in Texas. So do your job, enforce the law, remove people, but challenge the laws that are interfering with our right to at least guarantee that only cyizens are voting. But right now, Congress should actually fix the damn law.
Texas Congressman Chip Roy, Republican candidate for Attorney General of Texas. Best of luck to you and stay safe on the campaign trail.
Thanks Matt god bless talking to my friend.

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie, continues to grip the nation. Breaking Tonight, the FBI is released new photos and videos of a possible suspect. As you can see on your screen.
At home.
Security footage shows a masked person and approaching the home on the front porch on the morning of her disappearance. The suspect appears to tamper with the security camera before covering the lens with shrubs. Savannah Guthrie reacted to the new images on social media, saying, someone out there recognizes this person. We still believe she is out there, bring her home. We've also gotten a report from the Associated Press that the FBI wasn't plugged into the communication Savannah
Guthrie was having with the people seeking ransom payments. This is happening against the backdrop of Savannah Guthrie releasing heart wrenching messages to the abductor like this, We too have heard.
The reports about a ransom letter in the media.
We are ready to talk. We need to know.
Without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.
TMZ has been one of the media outlets receiving ransom demands. We got a sense from them that important deadlines are looming.
This is Monday, and the deadline is today at five o'clock Tucson time, and the kidnappers made it very clear in the first ransom note which we received, the situation is dire if they are true to their words, if they don't get that ransom money at five o'clock today Tucson time.
That deadline has since passed.
TMZ says it is still not seen the demanded six million dollar deposit in the ransom sender's bitcoin account.
We're not seeing a deposit, and we've been looking, obviously all day, and we looked at four o'clock our time, five o'clock twoson time, and we're not seeing it.
A former FBI official publicly questioned whether the gu three disappearance is actually a straightforward kidnapping, suggesting that the situation might involve opportunistic third parties rather than just the kidnappers.
She really is and I'm very skeptical of this. Is this really a kidnapping? Does somebody really have her? And is she really alive? And I don't think we have the answers to that question right now. If this is a kidnapping, it would be a very simple matter to authenticate and provide proof of life, asking her a question that only she would know the answer to, or asking her to provide some information that only she would know. And the fact that the family hasn't paid the rants
of at this point tells me that they don't. They're not to that point where they think this is a credible authentication that they've had a credible authenticators.
Joining us now retired FBI agent and former chief of the FBI National Academy, Michael Harrigan Chief. What does the duration of this investigation and exercise in defining misguth Thrie? What does it tell you about what's happening right now?
Well, what you see today is the release of the video of a suspect that was at the front door, So you're looking at over a week later. Clearly the duration of this investigation has gotten to the point where a law enforcement feels it's beneficial to release this video for the point of having the public way in here and provide hopefully helpful leads and tips that can be turned into actionable intelligence leading to the discovery hopefully of
Miscut three. But if not, the identification of who this individual is.
Yeah, and I wonder also sort of why it's taking so long if it is a ransom for payment, right, I mean, if I've never taken anyone and held them for ransom, but if I did, my goal would be to get the ransom payment and then not have the person hanging around as a dangling participle for problems later. Is it typical that the rhythm of this would carry on for weeks rather than days.
No, I think it's very unusual.
I think you pointed astutey pointed that out, is that the whole point of a kidnapping, if there's a financial motive, is to quickly get payment so then you can be done with the person, release them, and you go about your business, you know, spending the money you got. But here what you have is you have what appears to be a lack of contact from the kidnappers to the family, to law enforcement, at least from what we know that's
out in the public ground here. Is it lends to the credibility here of some that are saying, well, there could have been other motivations besides this, or that those notes that did come in may have been unverified and may have been from people had nothing to do with this, that we're simply looking for some type of financial gain here.
I really think that's the big question, whether or not we're in an active hostage negotiation or whether the third parties are trying to make the guth Three family and the rest.
Of us believe that.
I was surprised to see the announcement from law enforcement that they had no suspect and that they had no person of interest. Does it give the abductor of Missus Guthrie an advantage when law enforcement reveals that concession.
Well, you have to look at these kind of cases. These cases are unlike other kind of cases where you have a victim who's taken alive, we think at this point is being held. So the investigative techniques and all the tactics that law enforcement use are very different than other cases because ultimately what has to happen here, the goal is to get Miss Guthrie back alive so she can rejoin her loved ones. That's the sole focus here
of this case. Obviously the kidnappers are a link to Miss Guthrie, but to have this go on this law.
Is unusual in these cases.
And also what law enforcement is releasing is very measured, and there's a tactic behind what they release, which is to get to Missus Guthrie. So what we see see through the media, what we see being released is a very small sliver of what the investigators have at this point and what they might be working on.
Yeah, and what do you think that work would entail right now? Would you suspect that investigators were going through signals intelligence, sweeping the neighborhood, looking at ring cameras. What are the tactics and methods that you think would be most helpful to bring Missus Guthrie home and ascertain who took her?
I think right away, you know, when a person goes missing like this under these circumstances, the primary method of investigations quickly interview all those around her to try to find out facts and circumstances that could lead to her whereabouts. Then they branch off into the electronic, the signal intelligence and other things to try to figure out if there were people in the proximity of her who.
Was in the neighborhood.
And then as the case goes longer.
Here now, what they're starting to do is probably likely is working through a mountain of leads that are coming in from the public, because you know, the news media coverage of this has been excellent. This publicity, which isn't typical for most kidnappings, This is great publicity and works in the favor of the family here in that it gets more people in the public aware of this case, aware of.
Developments, especially this video.
Now they can see a picture of the person, and the potential of somebody out there seeing something, noticing this person the way he walks or whatever else moves, what he's wearing can only be good in matter that it could lead to other tips coming in that law enforcement can then go ahead and chase down.
Which begs the question why this is being released, you know, so many days after the initial abduction. I think it was a really smart point you made earlier. It's either helpful or not to release this. If it was helpful, it would have been more helpful earlier. I want to get to these messages that have been released by Savannah Guthrie. They seem very intentional. She uses langug wage like we want to celebrate again. This is the only way we can have peace. My assumption is Missus Guthrie is not
releasing those messages without some collaboration with law enforcement. But we've also seen reports that she's communicated with some of these ransom demanders in the absence of law enforcement. How does law enforcement deal with the information flow in such a high profile case like this, Well.
It's tricky because you know, ultimately here the victims family, which is you know, Missus Guthrie and the other children of the victim here, you know they have a vested interest in getting their mother back. So law enforcement can do everything they can do, and they can give them all the advice they want, but at the end of the day, they're the ones that are suffering here, So they could take measures on their own good intention to reach out to whoever they want and pay whoever they want.
That's that's that's something that's it's it's something that is an option for them. The problem here, and the reason why you know law enforce that works so closely with these victims, the families, is the communication has to be carefully crafted because what you're trying to do is you're trying to get the kidnappers to contact the family, to get that dialogue going directly, because when the dialogue goes, then so too comes potentially proof of life, which is
at the core here of these communications. You got to know she's alive, but.
We don't want the action.
That's weird right to be this deep into this type of a thing and not have a proof of life. The absence of a proof of life tells us a lot about I think where the investigation stands. The absence of proof of life, the absence of a lead, the failure to secure the crime scene, the failure to timely release information of the public.
I think there's a lot going on here.
Michael Harrigan, former FBI agent and former chief at the FBI National Academy, thank you so much for joining us and lending your expertise to the discussion.

Did you know there are urban mountain lions in the United States? Yeah, it's a thing, and there are way more of them than you think. Four thousand mountain lions live in California, and about fifteen hundred of them are in some of the most populated areas in the entire country, from San Francisco to where we are now in San Diego. Wildlife officials recently captured a young mountain lion that had
wandered into the middle of downtown San Francisco. After spending about thirty hours in the city, it was safely tranquilized and will be released back into wild habitat. But thirty hours in San Francisco can be dangerous for any living thing, especially a mountain lion. You're still more likely to be killed by dogs in California or even lightning, but there was a fatal lion attack in twenty twenty, and while
the attacks are rare, they can be devastating. Mountain lions are basically the same cat I call the Florida panther, and in Naples, Florida panthers have had increasing interactions with humans. Lions don't eat trash or human food like bears. They're strictly carnivorous hunters. Roads, freeways, housing developments, and infrastructure create barriers and limit mountain lion movement. It reduces gene flow
and can isolate populations. Researchers and wildlife agencies are studying connectivity and potential crossings to help mitigate these urban effects. So can urban lions live in the United States with the right protections or are we destined to see these great cats vanish from our lands? Joining us Now Animal Wellness Action founder and Wayne Piselli. Wayne I was shocked to learn how many mountain lions are very close to
urban centers and humans. How can urban communities adopt best practices to deal with this phenomenon?
Garsman, What's amazing is that lions live in the midst of human settlements. I mean, you're talking about San Francisco, you're talking about Los Angeles, you're talking about Santa Clara County.
Perhaps four thousand mountain.
Lions live in California, and some of the folks who want to harm lions really talk about, oh, there's such a threat, there's such a menace.
What's amazing to me is that they live with us.
They live around the corner, and we hardly even see them, no mind are threatened by them.
I think we just have to be alert. But they know that we're a threat, they stay away from us.
I have seen Florida with the panther and California work on some wildlife crossings, some ways for the animals to.
Move around are in your review?
Are those successful at provide some relief to these populations and allowing gene flow?
Well, I know you were a big advocate of Florida panthers. You know, just a few dozen of them, and Florida, like California, you know is cut up by settlement, it's cut up by roads.
What's amazing it's the number of animals killed on the roads.
I mean the number one threat to these lions in California is they're struck by vehicles. So, yes, these overpasses or underpasses give them an opportunity to cross these roads. Sometimes you're talking about six lane eight line eight lane highways. How are the animals going to get across there? I mean, the Los Angeles freeways are notorious for being immense human structures. This is the only way they can clearly get to the other side of the road.
What do you think are the most effective strategies to prevent extinction? With the downward pressure on a lot of these populations and habitat loss roads all the I mean, we're not going to get rid of roads.
And so what do you think we should do well?
I think you know what happened in Florida, as you know because you worked on this issue, is Texas cougars were introduced into South Florida because there was such a genetic bottleneck. I mean, the panthers had kink tails and they had other indicators of inbreeding. We don't have that problem statewide in California, but you do have localized populations where literally a male lion cannot get past.
The age of two years of age. Because there are so many threats.
We have to understand that these animals are incredible, they're powerful, but they stay away from us. Give them space to live, don't shoot them, don't treat them just because there's a sighting. Oh, we get scared and then have to shoot the animal. There are forty million people in California, we have four thousand lions. Which species is the overpopulated one?
What do you think is the prognosis here?
Do you think that with good management practices we will be able to preserve mountain lions in the United States? Or are they a species destined for its extinction.
Well, we're blessed in our country to so much public lands. One third of the two billion acres of the United States is public lands, Bureau Land Management lands, national for US, so we've.
Got ample space.
The problem in those areas is that hound hunters chase them, drive them up a tree, and shoot them out of the tree for a trophy. That's a huge threat on those lands. In terms of the settled lands where the lions just kind of eke out in existence. It's our roads, it's our development, it's nuisance killing. You know that people get fearful because there's a lion in the neighborhood and then they kill them. We've just got to understand that they deserve their place in our world as well.
Amen.
Animal Wellness Action Founder and president Wayne Piselli, Thanks for coming on the program.
