We defining local news. Are you kidding me? It is Monday morning already here in Boston, and away we go under clear skies. It is a very cold thirty eight degrees here in the city. The News at six has brought to us by You're New England Toyota Dealer, your hybrid all wheel drive headquarters and as always, welcome aboard. I'm Jeff Brown. Shivermy timbers chilly today with sunshine and

some clowns. We'll have highs of fifty one to fifty five out is WBZ achi weather meteorologist Heather's are another week of no rain too, could be near eighty and record warmth on Halloween. It also stinks outside along much of the shoreline. This morning. Winds from the north is sending smoke from Salem's brush fire through many communities.

Speaker 1

Bowing smoke is seeping under the woods. In South Salem. It smells like you've stuck your face above a campfire. The brush fire here is torched eighty acres so far, putting the shopping plaza under a sheet of gray smoke. Salem Fire Chief Allen Dion says is firefighters have to work all night to get a handle on this thing.

Speaker 3

Most of it is contained in the areas that have already burned out.

Speaker 1

No one's been hurt and no structures were damaged, but there's plenty of drifting smoke. Luckily, the chief doesn't think that'll affect festivities downtown or one of Salem's busiest weekends of the year. But this thing may stick around.

Speaker 3

There's still a lot of fuel here to burn, but it is kind of in a contained area.

Speaker 1

But it won't be out ill smolder for a long time. Kyle Shaffle to be busy Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2

Fire officials on the North Shore will gather for a strategy session a little bit later this morning. The National Guard has also been called in to assist with helicopters. It is one of several brush fires still burning in much of eastern Massachusetts this morning. It is one of the driest octobers in this section of the country, and the driest fall season across much of the United States. More than three quarters of the entire country is considered

abnormally dry. That is, according to the US Drought Monitor. While farmers are on edge, our dinner plates are likely to still be full in the coming weeks and months. It is, of course, harvest season, and no substantial rain is expected in the coming weeks for much of the nation's farmland. Now, the good news is growing season this spring and summer was just fine, and what's coming from the field should not have a negative impact in our kitchens in the near future. The USDA, in fact, says

some crops have seen record outputs this year. It is increasingly tougher to make ends meet. A new survey finds one fifth of families making at least one hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year our living paycheck to paycheck. The survey from Bank of America, with its latest snapshot of our bank accounts and our spending habits, mortgage payments, childcare and utility bills are taking the biggest bite of our annual pie. Celtics return to the garden Tonight's still

perfect on the year. Their toughest job yet awaits, though, and the Milwaukee Bucks are in town. Ruins are off till tomorrow. In Game three of the World Series Tonight live from New York's, the Dodgers are up two games to none over the Yankees. After the late game drama over the weekend at Dodgers Stadium. Sho he Otani was injured in one of those games. He is expected to play tonight. And twenty years ago this morning, Red Sox fans were in disbelieve.

Speaker 1

Back to full Red Sox fans have wonder head. The Boston Red Sox our world.

Speaker 2

Simpiods still get chills listening to that. The Red Sox finally, of course, reversed the curse with a World Series win in a sweep over the Saint Louis Cardinals WBZ s Drew mo'holland is here with a trip down memory lane.

Speaker 4

Morning Drew, Morning, jeffy eighty six years or wait till next year? I got washed away with that. The Socks have won three more titles since nice moment last night. Jeff, Jason Veritek, and Derek Lowe of course part of that team. Toasting the late Tim and Stacy Wakefield.

Speaker 5

We toast our dear friends and what they meant to us.

Speaker 2

Both Tim and Stacy. We love them, we missed them, we mess some, and we neither one of us would be here without them.

Speaker 4

The Wakefields, of course, both died of cancer over the last year. Jeff a nice moment last night.

Speaker 2

There this great stuff, all right, truth, thank you the same this week as we get started on a brand new work week here in Boston, under clear skies, we've got a lot of thirties on the board, primarily throughout the eastern portion of Massachusetts. This morning, the wind is died down. That's helping the efforts in some of the

frush fires throughout the eastern portion of this state. We are at thirty eight degrees right now in Boston, plenty of sunshine today, Highs only in the lower fifties, so it is going to be one of the coldest days of this recent stretch. But there's no significant rain and certainly no real rainfall at any time in the not too distant future. In fact, we are going to get back into business and it's going to feel like late summer.

A little bit later on this week, just in time for Halloween, we could see temperatures approaching eighty degrees, which would be near a record high temperature as the kids get ready to go door to door this Thursday night. It's going to continue to be warm as we head into the upcoming weekend as well, But right now we're starting slow and We're starting cold thirty eight clear skies in Boston this Monday morning, six oh six daylight is

living on borrowed time. A long weekend does a wait, but not a lot of us are happy with the upcoming changing of the clocks. We do gain an hour of sleep this weekend, but it's the end of an annual era.

Speaker 5

Daylight saving time officially in Sunday morning, November third, at two am. Not only are we going to gain that extra hour of sleep, health experts say the fallback is typically a little easier to deal with in the spring forward that we do in March, and it will be lighter out earlier in the morning. That's great for those school kids catching an early bus. The downside, well, it will start to get dark late in the afternoon, so that could mean leaving work in the darks. Same goes

for a late day walk or outdoor exercise. Sherry Small w BZ, Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2

As election season winds down, a new survey finds almost half of American voters lack faith in the nation's democracy. The New York Times Siena College poll reveals forty five percent believe democracy does not do a good job representing ordinary people, three quarters say they feel democracy is under threat. In what's considered an improvement over polls from just a

couple of years ago. Most say the nation's financial and political systems do need a major overhaul, but an overwhelming majority we're talking eighty percent also say the results of the upcoming presidential election will be accurate. And things get a little crazy at a Looklike contest in New York City.

Speaker 3

Actor Timothy shallow May surprised the crowd in Washington Square Park when he showed up in person, greeted fans, and posed for photos with dozens of doppelgangers dressed up like his characters from Doune and Willie Wonka. Police shut down the party and handed the organizers a five hundred dollars fine for an unpermitted costume contest. One fan in our purple Wonka costume was crowned the winner anyway. Deborah Rodriguez, CBS News.
