Friday. You know, I don't like the fact that you're gone for seven days, you never call, you never speak a word, and then you show up. But we'll welcome you nonetheless. Good morning, six o'clock Friday, cloudy sky's forty two degrees, occasional drizzle out the door. The News at six, brought to us by your New England's Toyota Dealer, your hybrid all wheel drive headquarters. Thanks for being here today, I'm Jeff Brown. Well, this is less than comfortable.
It'll be rainy this morning, along with some fog than wendy this afternoon, with clouds breaking for some sunner hind the upper forties.
WBZ acky weather meteorologist Joe Lundberg. Decent weekend, though on the way. Everett's longtime mayor says he's running for office again.
Mayor Carla de Maria joint supporters at a ballroom in Maldon last night for his campaign kickoff. It was there where he was described as defiance in the face of calls to step down. Those calls coming from the city council, which not only approved a vote of no confidence, in the mayor, but demanded that he paid back one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in which he was overpaid. That
finding came from an inspector general's report. De Maria, who was first elected in two thousand and eight, has denied any wrongdoing in Everett. James Rojas w b Z Boston's Snooz.
Radio te Maria has been in office in Everett for seventeen years. City councilors there will discuss, ironically enough, term limits in a meeting coming up on Monday night. The federal judge in the deportation decision of alleged Venezuelan gang members says the White House could be held in contempt of court. Next Judge James Boseburg, says the government's response for more details about ignoring a court order to turn
those flights to Al Salvador around is woefully insufficient. Trump administration officials say the deportations are made under a revival of the Alien Act of seventeen ninety eight, which allows for drastic measures in drastic times of war. But the court calls into question the rationale of the Venezuelans invading the country and becoming enemies of the nation. Teachers respond to President Trump's executive order that begins the process of
tearing down the Education Department. The American Federation of Teachers will speak to the media this morning about the negative impact it feels this act will have on the lives of students today and tomorrow. The department was created by Congress. Only Congress can approve its disintegration. Bruins try to stumble.
I guess to the finish line a four game losing streak now as the Golden Knights take it to them late night in Vegas and Madness, the search for a perfect bracket falls apart steps the usual batch of upsets in the first round of March Madness. Celtics in Utah tonight and go for a four game winning streak. The days are numbered for Red Sox spring training. They host the Pirates at Jet Blue tonight. Pieces of NBA history are about to go for big bucks.
Bitting begins today on Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan's first ever game worn NBA jerseys. Jordan's is from his nineteen ninety four preseason debut in Chicagoan.
Fming up Jordan of Chicago.
Southerby's called jerseys from Jordan's rookie season unicorns, as they're rarely seen going on the market. Bryant's is the first jersey he wore in nineteen ninety six with the La Lakers, which has the number eight on it.
There's Kobe, He's a young man.
They're each expected to fetch about ten million dollars apiece. Stacy Lynn CBS News.
Quite an interesting picture on the radar maps this morning. Right now, Boston is in a bit of a lull between some following some heavy rain overnight and just sup to a couple of hours ago. Another batch of rain is about to move in and the trailing edge of this system features some snowfall out in western Massachusetts this morning. This is all to say, this is an unsettled day and here in Boston right now it is forty two degrees so whatever comes down is going to be rain.
Here in the city. We are expecting temperatures to stay in the forties today. It's going to be a bit windy. All of this precipitation will come to an end later this morning, early this afternoon, we'll see breaks of sunshine on the way. Overnight tonight mainly clear and breezy lows back in the thirties, A nice day tomorrow, mix of sun and clouds, hies well into the fifties, maybe low sixties.
A bit of a change as we take it in the other direction on Sunday, wrapping up the weekend with some chilly air with some sunshine, two highs only in the forties. Right now it's forty two clouds and more rain on the way. It's six oh six this Friday morning. Have you had it with tipping? You're not alone as that extra quick question at the checkout counter pushes many of us over the edge. Andrew moholland is here.
Hello, Jeffrey, Good morning, Good morning. Nearly nine to ten think tipping culture has gone too far.
Let me ask you. Does that surprise you? No, it really doesn't.
Everything sign of the times that is way up from last year too, and our attitudes toward gratuity have drastically changed. More than half of Americans say a tip out of I guess a social obligation rather than giving the extra money just for good service.
So you know what, I will argue is even more annoying than tipping. The survey questions, how did we do well? You know. I ordered a cup of coffee. You poured me a cup of coffee and you handed it to me. You did great, big thumbs up. Thanks.
I thought he might have strong opinions on this.
This is good. Don't you got me started and it's just beginning. Are you done?
No?
I don't think so, but I'm going to have to put it on pause right now. Thank you. Drew massive headaches this morning and all day long at London's Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, is completely shut down today. This follows a fire at a London
power station. The airport, which routinely handles about thirteen hundred flights a day, forced more than one hundred of those flights to be diverted when the power got knocked out, including a few flights that had to return to Boston's Logan. It's not clear when full power will be restored, but officials say the ripple effects of delays will likely take days to unwind. Word of warning for international travelers coming
into the United States. The United Kingdom issues a travel warning, a message that harsh consequences could await British passport holders who violate America's immigration laws. Official say simply, any traveler may be liable to arrest or detention. The warning comes a day after officials in Germany update its own travel policies after three of its citizens are detained. Here, inspectors will need to take another look and to the Tobin,
the Born and Sagamore bridges here in Massachusetts. They are all on a long list NTSB says could be at risk of collapse if hit by a ship. This, of course, follows last year's tragedy in Baltimore.
Had they ran the calculation on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the MDTA would have been aware that the bridge was almost thirty times greater than the risk threshold ASHTOE sets for critical essential bridges.
Zent tsb's chair Jennifer Hammandy. Almost one year ago, of course, a cargo ship lost power and brought the Key Bridge down in the middle of the night, killing six about seventy bridges across the country. They are now on this inspection list for vulnerability. You are now in the loop.
