News, Waning sunshine, bitter cold. It is sixteen in Boston right now, where we start off in our nation's capital, where President Donald Trump has already signed dozens of executive arders less than twenty four hours after taking the oath of office. President Trump has withdrawn the country from the Paris Climate Accord and made moves to withdraw from the
World Health Organization as well. He has also declared a national emergency at the southern border and pardon more than twelve hundred people whose storm he was capital on January sixth, twenty twenty one. ABC's Mary Bruce has more.
The full, complete and unconditional pardons include the former leader of the far right group the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, sentenced to twenty two years for sedition. Trump also commuting the sentences of fourteen others charged with sedition, including Stuart Rhodes, founder of the Oathkeeper's Militia, sentenced to eighteen years.
About a dozen of the people to receive pardons are from Massachusetts, and in another executive order, President Trump targets birthright citizenship. ABC Stephen Portnoy has moremed what exactly that means.
This order says that even if a woman is legally in the United States here on for example, the visa waiver program, a tourist visa, a student visa, if she's pregnant and gives birth here in this country, the baby that's born here in the US will not be granted an American passport or citizenship unless the father of the child happens to be an American citizen or a Green cardholder, a lawful permanent resident.
The ACLU has already filed a lawsuit to block the order. President Trump is pledged to conduct the largest mass deportation in US history. Massachusetts Republicans are now renewing a push to fortify the power of federalized agents to detain suspects. It comes as Democrats and Beacon Hill push a bill to formerly make Massachusetts a sanctuary state. They would like to forbid state belief sheriffs and local law enforcement from
detaining people on those ice detainers. Senate Minority Leader Bruce tar tells The Eagle Tribune their counter move is not meant to help the Trump administration round up undocumented immigrants. The purpose, he says is to allow eyes to hold criminal suspects or convicts in this country illegally for up to twelve hours. And one other GOP bill. There are two empowers. Actually, one empowers local and state judges to
honor the ice detainers. The second bill, filed by local GOP lawmakers, would force judges to do so, so it would not be an obfer. President Trump signs an executive order on gender identity. From now on, in the eyes of the federal government, there are only two sexes, male and female. But that's not the only hard stance the new president has taken on gender identity. Reports U mass Amherst confirmed Monday the two geese found dead on campus have tested positive for bird flu. This follows a weekend announcement out of Plymouth saying that bird flu is suspected in the deaths of more than sixty Canada geese, swans, and other birds found at Billington c
in recent weeks. State public health and environmental health officials are saying that highly pathogenic avian flu rarely infects humans, but they are still warning the public to avoid handling any birds or other animals that are dead or appear to be sick and at Amherst, the school is warning people to be careful around animals and avoid touching the geese around the campus pond, Sherry Small WBZ Boston's news radio.
The largest teachers union in Massachusetts makes a move to legalize teachers strikes. The MTA is calling for a mandatory base salary of seventy thousand dollars for teachers as well, and fifty five grand for classroom aids. The union is filing a new bill as well that would add up to twenty six weeks of paid lead. They believe this will attract and retain good teachers. Teachers in more than a half a dozen districts have gone on strike recently
looking for better wages and paid family leave. Workers at a popular big box store could soon go on strike. ABC's Michelle Franzen has that story.
Costco employees are preparing for a possible walkout. Teamsters union members Sunday voting to authorize a strike. More than eighty five percent of the workers are in favor of hitting the picket lines that issue wages and benefits. A job action could happen after January thirty first, Michelle Franzen, ABC News.
And it appears as though the new president is already redecorating the Oval Office.
Photos taken by the Wall Street Journal show the Oval Office now includes a portrait of Benjamin Franklin and of fresh painting of Andrew Jackson, just like four years ago. A painting of George Washington now hangs over the fireplace. A bust of Winston Churchill is back where it was during the first Trump presidency on a table near the fireplace.
