This is w b Z Boston's news radio, redefining local news.
It's already eighty four degrees in Boston, sunny skies at eleven o'clock. Good Thursday morning. It's June fifth. I'm Sherry Small and here's what's happening. Marcelo Gomez will appear in immigration court at one o'clock this afternoon after being detained by Ice on Saturday. Gomez's attorney say the Milford teen has had little food and no sleep since he was taken into custody.
His legal team says Gomez entered the country legally from Brazil when he was seven, but that visa lapsed. The government says he's here illegally. Ice claims when they pulled him over Saturday, they were looking for his father.
We love America, Please bring my.
Son uber jal Paolo Gomez appeared in Marcello's bedroom with the team's mom and younger siblings, making a plead to Ice in a video message first obtained by wbz Rallies and protests have popped up in Milford each day since Gomez was detained, including one Wednesday at the middle school.
That's CBS News Boston's Brandon Truett reporting. A Chelsea family meanwhile files a federal complaint over their treatment by ICE
agents on Mother's Day. Cania Guerrero, a US citizen, was driving to church with her husband, Daniel Flores Martinez, and their three children when they were stopped by several federal agency vehicles, and a video shows masked ICE agents demanding identification, then smashing the passenger side window, opening the door, dragging Floras Martinez out of the car, slamming him to the ground,
and arresting him in handcuffs. The complaint seeking damages and claims wrongful arrest, excessive force, assault, and the infliction of lasting trauma, especially on the family's three US citizen children. President Trump issuing a new travel band restricting citizens of twelve from entering the US, including Afghanistan, Libya, Sudan, and Yemen. CBS's At O'Keefe.
Reports, we don't want them.
Announcing the travel ban, President Trump said the recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, showed the dangers posed by foreign nationals, who he claimed weren't properly vetted. We've seen one terror attack after another carried out by foreign visa overstairs from dangerous places all over the world. The suspect in the Boulder attack is an Egyptian national who federal officials say was living in the US illegally.
And the ban also partially restricts entry from seven other countries, including Cuba and Venezuela. It's set to take effect on Monday. All right, another escalation in President Trump's dispute with Harvard, the President signing an executive order banning foreign students from entering the US to study at Harvard, saying the school
is no longer trustworthy of hosting international students. Harvard accusing the Trump administration of trying to deprive it of its right to free speech, and says it will continue to protect its international students. Well, let's check the ACU weather forecast. Get ready, It's going to be hot and humid today, a mix of sun and clouds, a late day or evening thunderstorm in a few spots. That's northwest of Boston.
HIH's eighty six to ninety degrees. It's already eighty four in the city, mid to upper seventies for the Cape and the Islands. It's going to be humid over night, partly cloudy, a low of only sixty seven degrees, so it's going to be a warm one Tomorrow, mostly cloudy. It's going to be humid once again, a couple of showers in a thunderstorm. Most in the afternoon. They could be gusty with some small hail. A high of seventy three degrees in the downtown area, near eighty in those
inland areas. And unfortunately, this is a pattern we've seen for quite some time now. We're going to start the weekend all Saturday with more showers and some thunderstorms around, plenty of clouds as well, high of seventy one, but it's not a complete wash out for the weekend. Sunday, we'll see those clouds breaking for sunshine. Highs within a few degrees of seventy near the coast, closer to seventy five inland, so that will be pleasant once again. Eighty
four and sonny in Boston. The humidity already at forty eight percent. It's eleven oh five. Back to news now, the Bruins have head coach number thirty and it is a former player WBCJ Willette has reaction from TD Carton.
He's good, got'd be better than Joe Sackel.
The Boston Bruins announced Marco Sterm as head coach and in their off season, fans hope they put in the work.
We'll see what they get in the draft.
They got to reside in Geeky and we'll go from there.
He's a former player skating his left wing for Boston between five and twenty ten. But he's got experience without a stick on the bench.
Marco Steram was a good player. I was a big fan of his. I met him once. Who's super nice guy. So I guess we'll see.
I'll go boost. Recently, Sturm coached Ontario's AHL team. Prior to that, he was assistant coach to the Los Angeles Kings. Fans at TD Garden with loves that champ winning energy. I hope so they need it.
They need to get younger and they got to get better drafted and develop.
And from Cosway Street, Jabile at WBZ Boston's news.
Radio students north of Boston, I should say better keep that cell phone tucked away. WBC's Drew mcholland explains about a new proposal.
Newburyport High School students will only be able to use their cell phones at lunch under a new proposal, which still needs to be voted in by the school committee. Principal Andrew Wolf tells me the crackdown means no more phone use in the hallways, the library, and phones, of course, are already banned in class.
We as adults also have to model.
I know for myself it's making sure that my phone is on silent for the day.
If I'm walking around in classes, the phone shouldn't be ringing in my pocket.
The new policy would be enforced with warnings.
You could eventually have the phone confiscated for the day, and worse, you could have to attend to program if you are a repeat offender.
Kids. Yeah, I don't know. Mixed feelings. They'll just keep the phones tucked away.
I think if it's like in people's bags like that wouldn't be a problem.
I think it makes sense.
How keep students accountable for how they use their class time.
Really, I found they're mostly just ready for the summer.
