Speaker 1

This is WBZ, Boston's news radio, redefining local news.

Speaker 2

It's forty seven and rainy in Boston at eleven o'clock at Thursday morning on Madison Rodgers, and we start this hour with a sharp sell off on Wall Street response to new tariffs from President Trump. As of right now, the Down's down just over three and a half percent, the S and P down more than four percent, while the Nasdaq now pushes six percent. The selloff comes on the first trading day since President Trump announced a minimum

ten percent tariff on all imports. CBS's Jill Schlessinger has more.

Speaker 3

Investors are worried that the Trump tariffs, along with all the previously announced tariffs, will slow down economic growth and cause prices to rise. In that environment, many companies will be under pressure to deliver results to their shareholders. There is a concern that consumers will start to see higher prices and we'll pull back on spending. Overall. That could put a dent in economic growth and also cause many companies to reevaluate their own spending and hiring plans.

Speaker 2

The Senates passed a bill aimed at curtailing some of the President's ability to invoke those tariffs. The bill challenges his declaration of a national emergency giving him the power to put tariffs in place. ABC's j O'Brien says some senators from President Trump's own party helped push that bill over the finish line. Last night.

Speaker 4

They get four Republicans Rand Paul plus three to vote for this. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch mccaddoll has long been a thorn in Donald Trump's side. They joined with Rand Paul all Democrats in this gets over the gold line.

Speaker 2

Now, this measure only focuses on the tariffs imposed on some Canadian imports. It also won't go into effect unless the House votes in agreement with the Senate. That is unlikely to happen as the state again tries Karen Reid for the murder of her Boston officer boyfriend. Today is day three of jury selection Norfilk Superior Court. At this point, seven jurors have been selected, four men, three women. They're

looking to pick sixteen jurors in total, including alternates. Finding impartial jurors can be a challenge in a case as high profile as this one. Nearly all the potential jurors so far say they've at least heard of the case. It's supposed to be a guarantee at construction sites in Boston a police officer unseen working in detail. Soon civilians will be able to work some of those shifts, and there are more changes coming the city now bringing in

a Connecticut based company to modernize the scheduling system. It turns out that system is still done entirely by pen and paper. There's going to be a new priority system under which Boston police gets first DIBs on detailed shifts, followed by police from other local communities, and then civilians. The city has long struggled to fill those detailed shifts, leading to thousands of vacancies. In the four d a WBZI weather forecast, we will continue to see some showers

around this afternoon. At this point, most of the rain is south of Boston, and it's coming down heaviest along the south coast and along the Rhode Island line. That is slowly but surely making its way out, though again some lingering rain later on this afternoon, winds picking up, temps getting warmer. We're expecting a high around sixty two, so quite a bit warmer than it is now. Mostly cloudy with a couple of showers. Tonight, we'll get down

into the low fifties. Then Friday, clouds break for some sunshine. It's breezy sixty two to sixty six degrees. Some rain and drizzle moves back in for Saturday. Otherwise it's a cloudy, cooler one with temps in the mid upper forties. Then Sunday a couple of showers, especially in the afternoon, but it's back up in the sixties, around sixty four for the high and mostly cloudy. Looking ahead, we could see a lingering show hour around Monday morning, but otherwise sun

returns with tempts into the low fifties. Possibly. Right now, it is forty seven degrees in Boston, light rain. It is drizzly, misty, and fairly nasty out there. At eleven five. Complaints about third party food delivery drivers causing traffic in Boston are stacking up, and as a result, the City councils now passed a measure to collect more driver data and beef up insurance coverage.

Speaker 1

This new proposal passed the City Council on an eleven to two vote, now waits the signature of Mayor Michelle Woo. It would require third party food delivery drivers to get city permits, increase insurance, and report data on a quarterly basis so the city can analyze some of the troublesome traffic spots.

Speaker 3

I think that there are other creative solutions to find that don't put the burden on the average worker.

Speaker 1

All these thinks it may be burdensome to drivers. Ryan agrees, but also thinks city safety is paramount.

Speaker 4

However, I understand the need to keep Selearia safe.

Speaker 1

He thanks reporting the driving data will be extra helpful.

Speaker 3

So I don't know if there's some way to just maken Z owns just the main.

Speaker 1

Street one detail that was initially tied to this measure that was dropped by the city council of fifteen cent per delivery tax along Boylson Street. Jim MCKAWBZ Boston's News Radio.

There's a hearing set in Boston Federal Court this afternoon in the case of a detained Tough's PhD student, and the university itself has now joined the call to release fro Mesa Osturk. She's the Turkish national who was arrested by playing closed ice agents last week in Somerville in a declaration from the school. Tough says Osterk is described by faculty as a hard working, dedicated student, and they have no information supporting allegations that she was engaged in

activities warranting her arrest. Ostark has been accused of supporting Hamas in her pro Palestinian activism. The US District Court is facing a challenge from the Trump administration. They argue that they don't have jurisdiction here because Romesa was taken out of state. Stay with WBZ News Radio for developments. The hearing this afternoon is expected to begin around two pm. You're now in the loop for news updates throughout the day.
