News, Sonny and seventy four in the city. Hello, thanks for being with us. I'm Sherry Small. Here's what's happening. It's the final day of the Panmass Challenge, with sixty five hundred bicyclists making the track across the Straight State over the weekend in order to raise money for cancer research. CBS News Boston's Paul Burton reports from bourn where riders an overnight pitstock.

A community of champions came together this weekend to take part in the Panmass Challenge, peddling with passion and riding their hearts out to find a cure for cancer.

You know, I'm not a doctor, so I can't cure cancer, but this is my way of doing something for those who can.

From Sturbers to Provincetown and all cities and towns in between, more than sixty five hundred riders peddled with purpose for the two day event. One hundred percent of every rider goes to Data Probert Cancer Institute to accelerate research and treatment.

Good and writers will finish the challenge today in Provincetown. The special investigator named by former Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Donald Trump is now under probe himself. We get details from CBS's Christian Benavidez.

Former Special counsel Jack Smith, who was tasked with investigating President Trump, is now under investigation himself by the Office of the Special Council, a federal launchdog agency separate from the Department of Justice. It's unclear what prompted the probe, but the investigation followed a complaint by Republican Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, who wrote on x that Smith's investigations were politically motivated.

Cotton claiming that Smith was trying to help then President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Senate shoots down some of President Trump's nominees to key positions if you did get through, though, including former Fox television host Janine Piro as US Attorney in Washington, d C.

One of the main things that Republicans wanted to get settled before they would leave for recess, and that's something that President Trump had emphasized, is that they wanted to confirm as many nominees they could. Some of the notable nominees that we did not see in this final round of votes on Saturday night was Mike Walt's nomination of the US Ambassador.

To the UN and that CBS is Christina Carujo reporting the Senate. It is now off on its month long August recess, returning on September second. A five foot water monitor that had escaped in Webster two weeks ago has been recaptured. Police say the lizard will now live with Rainforest Reptile Shows and rrs Oasis that's a nonprofit animals sanctuary for abused and confiscated animals in Beverly. It's illegal to possess water monitor lizards here in Massachusetts without a permit and authority say this animal was being kept without proper authorization when it escaped custody.
