This is WBZ, Boston's news radio re defining local.
News, dark clouds, chance of rain, just a little bit of Boston sixty three. It's eleven o'clock. Good morning, Hope you had a nice weekend. On Laurie Kirby. We start this hour in Lebanon, where Israel is now urging civilians to evacuate as they fire a new wave of deadly missiles at Hesbelon targets in Lebanon. ABC's Matha Ratus is in Tel Aviv.
President Biden says his administration is doing everything possible to prevent a wider war, but a US official telling me the table is set for escalation, that the Israelis are not listening to the US, and that what we saw here overnight is a prelude of what is to come.
That is why we have.
Seen the State Department warren Americans to get out of Lebanon while commercial means are still available.
Thousands of people right now are fleeing south. And what's the biggest excident since the two thousand and six Israel has Belah war. Hundreds have been killed, and fears of an escalating conflict, a wider conflict in the Middle East is pulling focused at the UN General Assembly this week. Over now to ABC's jo'brien.
President Biden will address the UN on Tuesday. White House officials say the top priority for him is reaffirming American leadership on the world stages, also trying to end brutal conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. It was just a few weeks before the start of the Israel Hamasquare that was the last time at these more than one hundred and forty world leaders gathered together. That conflict in that region will take center stage.
Congressional leaders reach a deal to prevent a looming shutdown. ABC Steven Portnoy has that the.
Bipartisan measure is expected to avert a government shutdown next week and keep agencies fully funded through December twentieth. It includes an additional two hundred and thirty one million dollars for the Secret Service, but that money comes with strings attached. The agency must deliver to Congress its initial review of its time failures in Butler, Pennsylvania, and respond in a timely manner to requests for answers and documents from House and Centered oversight investigators.
A bill extending government funding for three months is expected on the House floor on Wednesday and a big honor in the seaport. Today. In Boston, a ceremony is being held at the Omni Boston Hotel to honor the New Englanders of the year, and the New England Council says over sixteen hundred members and guests are coming from all
over New England. On the list of nominees, there's retired Brigadier General Jack Hammond and retiring Congresswoman Annie Christoph New York make that New Hampshire Eastern Bank CEO Bob Rivers and the Burton family that includes WBZTV sportscasters Steve Burton and a lot more. Congresswoman Laurie Trehan and Red Sox chair Tom Werder will attend. The celebration is happening around
four pm. There's a strike on the way at that hotel, but the Council does not expect any disruptions and more patrols are at schools in Chelmsford and Worcester after threats are made. Some sprinkles falling out there in various locations, but all in all just clouds and sun today, cool breezes and high surf. We have an advisory for the surf that's just been pounding the coastline through eight o'clock
tonight and then the rest of the week. We're in the clouds, breezy at night tonight some of you will be in the forties. You're definitely going to feel like it's fall. It is our first full week, first full day. Now by Thursday, we're warming it up near seventy and we should dry out for some sunshine and a much better Friday into the weekend.
So there is.
Heightened security at some schools around Massachusetts today. You know, I was reporting on Chelmsford High where an unspecified threat was found in a school bathroom Friday. Police deemed it not credible, but of course they were upping patrols there today. I've also just learned there are more police at some schools in Woocester today. Are multiple students from various schools reported threatening messages on social media. Wister. Police don't think
those threats are credible either, but they're obviously investigating. Right in the heart of the fall sports season, an athletic complex concession stand in Kingston is ransacked. Wbz's Jim McKay reports nearly one thousand dollars worth of snacks meant for kids have been stolen.
I was very upset. Chris is a parent of an eight year old, a native of Kingston and silver Lake grad, obviously ticked off when he found out about what happened here at the Opachinski Athletic Complex. I've been doing this for a long time and my kids have been through here for a long time. This is the home of Silver Lake Youth Football, where some two hundred kids across Halifax, Plimpton and Kingston hone their skills. Chris Nathan wondering why anyone would do such a thing. It's bad because it
makes the kids not feel safe. Now the program is getting donations from local businesses and families looking to replenish the items stolen over the weekend. Trying to not let it TARTI should time of the the entire community looks forward to.
They really like playing here in Kingston.

In an effort to stop six season free COVID tests are coming back soon. We get more on that from CBS's Linda Kenyon.
The Department of Health and Human Services says the tests will be available for home delivery later this month. The exact date has not yet been said. To order, you can go to COVID tests dot gov. Health of US will say it's a good idea to order ahead of the holidays to avoid getting COVID at a time when family and friends gather for celebrations, and also just to be forewarned. While most Americans have some degree of immunity from prior infections or vaccinations or both, that protection does
wane over time. Linda Kenyon, CBS News, Washington.
And a not so little penguin is getting a ton of attention down under.
Pesto the penguin is packing on the pounds. The three foot tall kingbird weighs a whopping fifty pounds and he's only nine months old. He lives at the Sea Life Aquarium in Melbourne, Australia, where he eats thirty fish a day. That's twice as many as the average adult penguin. The aquarium says Pesto's growth will plateau as he matures and enters his fledgling period. Pesto's mom and dad, Hudson and Tango, weigh about twenty five pounds each. Deborah Rodriguez CBS News.
