This is WBZ, Boston's news radio, redefining local news.
Eighty five degrees in Boston. It's sunny out there, getting more humid by the hour in the city of Boston. It's eleven o'clock. Good morning. I'm Nicole Davis. Here's what's happening. President Trump and members of his cabinet are speaking right now from the White House Briefing Room. President moments ago announced a federal takeover of the Washington DC Police. More now in a special report from CBS.
News, President Trump is calling today Liberation Day in DC and holding a press conference in the White House Briefing Room.
I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor and worse.
Trump says he's putting the city under federal control.
In addition, I'm deploying the National Guard to help re establish law order of public safety in Washington, DC, and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly.
He says. Crime has gotten out of control.
The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogata, Columbia, Mexico City. Some of the places that you hear about as being the worst place is on Earth. Much higher.
This is much higher on truth social Trump wrote, the days of ruthlessly killing or hurting innocent people are over. CBS News special report, I'm Stacey Lynn Now.
The President also said he would bring in the military if necessary, and directed police to quote do whatever the hell you want to protesters who spit on them. Mister Trump said that the US will not lose its cities, and Washington is just the start. Meantime, at eleven oh one, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on Friday. They'll be there to talk
about ending the war in Ukraine. They're doing so, though without Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in attendance.
The President's adjusted on the same day he announced the summit that there would be an exchange of land in order to reach a peace deal. Zelenski flat out rejects seeding any land. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Putin told Trump's envoy Steve Whitcoff he would end the
war in exchange for eastern Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Europe and Ukraine presented its own peace plan to top US officials saying that no land concessions without Ironcloud security guarantees, including potential NATO membership for Ukraine.
Not is abc Selina Wang and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nettanna, who says his plan to take over Gaza City is the fastest way to end the war with Hamas. Countries around the world have been condemning the plan and how it could affect civilians and hostages in Gaza. Hospital officials in Gaza say at least thirty four people were killed in Israeli strikes today alone, including twelve people trying to
get eight. And here's some developments weatherwise. We have a brand new tropical storm in the Atlantic National Hurricane Center out within advisory, the first advisory for tropical storm, and this was just released a couple moments ago. This just formed, i'd say about two hundred and eighty miles west of Cape Verde, so still several days before we could start to potentially see this in our neck of the woods.
At this point, again, this is just a tropical storm, but there has been some pretty quick development with this. We're going to watch this here on WBZ. Otherwise, here in the northeast, we are just seeing a lot of sun. For the next few days, it's going to be hot and sticky. We have temperatures in the nineties today if
you're on the Capean Islands, more like the eighties. And for tonight it'll be clear with a lone near seventy two in Boston and on the coast mid sixties in the outer suburbs, so you're really not going to need too many layers Tonight, for tomorrow, sunny with a high in the low to mid nineties, mid eighties on the capein Islands. And then for your Wednesday, sun followed by
clouds and you guessed it, highs in the nineties. We could be looking at a heat wave here right now in Boston at eleven oh five, we have ticked up to eighty six degrees and it is partly cloudy. A bat flew straight into a local woman's mouth. Wbz's Hyle Shaffle says that caused her to pay thousands in medical bills.
Ever, wonder what the outside of a bat tastes like.
The tastes has an earthy kind of sweet flavor, which I hope no one ever has to know besides me.
Well, now you know that's Erica Kahan, a Westward biomedical engineer and perhaps one of the unluckier folks among us. She was stargazing in Arizona with her dad after losing her job when from out of the inky blackness.
Flies into me. It kind of comes from the side. It hits me in the faith that squirms around it gets kind of stuck.
This was just ten days after losing health coverage, and those Raby shots don't come cheap.
Plus I had seen the Office episode about Raby's awareness, so thanks to the Michael Scott.
Fun run, it was twenty one grand, which she's now trying to repay out of pocket. A recent gofund me is helping, but the whole situation has led her to ask questions about the healthcare system and.
Why is our healthcare tied to a job? You know, when you lose your job, you're losing your insurance.
For the record, she says she bears no ill will towards bat Kind, except maybe that one bat. Kyle Shaffle WBZ Boston T's radio.
To Summerville at eleven oh six. Several people are homeless after a fire tore through an apartment building there late last night. First responders got to the building on Powder House Boulevard around eleven o'clock. Quickly jumping into action, They were able to rescue a person from the second floor who was found unconscious. They're being treated for smoke in
elation and burns at a nearby hospital. Fire crews using a ladder truck to get two other people out of a third floor unit, and another woman was forced to jump out a window onto a mattress. She wasn't seriously hurt, so she'll say a firefighter was also her, but they're expected to be okay. No word on what caused those fires, and law enforcement in Medford say they're trying to figure out what or who started a pair of fires behind the high school. These happened just a few days apart.
The first fire was found back on Friday afternoon, and then Cruise responded to another one just after midnight yesterday. As of now, they see it's not exactly clear what started them. They're investigating both as potentially suspicious. You have any information, you're asked to call Medford police or fire. You are now in the loop for news updates throughout the day.
