Friday morning. It's eleven o'clock. We're seeing a lot of cloud cover out there. If you're along the coast, you're seeing and hearing those waves pounding. Coastal flood advisories are up for today this weekend looking mixed. More coming up. I'm Laurie Kirby. We're following breaking news of the Karen read case. Now it's been illegal battle since a mistraw was declared back in July. Now we're hearing from the

State Supreme Judicial Court for the very first time. Wdbz's Brooke McCarthy has been on this story from day one. She joins me now live with more Brook Laurie.

Speaker 3

The state's highest court has agreed to review the Karen Reid case. This comes after lawyers for Red filed an appeal last week to get two of the three charges against her dismiss In this new court filing, Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Dewart did not make a decision on the matter, but said the full panel will hear arguments on the appeal. It's important to note here that the judge did have the power to dismiss this entirely. The court has outlined

some important dates in the matter. There's a series of deadlines for the defense and prosecution to file briefs over the next month. In oral arguments could be held as early as November. Lawyers for Reid are looking to get the charges of leaving the scene and secondary murder dismissed on the grounds of double jeopardy. Now, Judge Beverly Canoni ruled in the lower court hearing that this didn't amount to that, but both sides confirmed that they heard from

jurors saying they were unanimous on those two charges. As of right now, Reid will face a second trial on all three charges in January of next year, but this Supreme Court case could impact that loriie.

Speaker 2

Aptly time, as you said, Brook, November, So that gives that judge discretion to make a decision before that trial presumably gets underway or does not. All right, and we

are your breaking news station. You know that by now, But again we're streaming on the iHeartRadio app all of these breaking news stories, Brook McCarthy, thank you so much updating this story out of the Middle East, Israel and Hesbelah trade cross borders, strikes and yet another day of escalating violence in Israeli attack Rock Bay Route today right

after Hesbela rockets pounded targets in northern Israel. Israel now says its strike was meant to take out the top Hesbela leader and it's just the latest day of violence. After dozens were killed and thousands wounded after pagers and walkie talkies detonated they were being carried by members of Hesbelah in Lebanon. Here's ABC's Martha Radits.

Speaker 1

Learning Israel began planning for a supply chain attack like this fifteen years ago. An intelligence source confirms to ABC News that Israel created shell companies to manufacture and eventually sell the pagers to Hesbela. The source confirming that one to two ounces of explosives were planted in the pagers with a remote trigger switch to set off the blasts.

Speaker 2

Has Below's leaders vowed retaliation for what he's calling an active war on the part of Israel. While speaking at a gathering in Washington, former President Trump makes comments that might prove a step backward in his attempt to drum up support from Jewish voters. Here's ABC Stephen port nois, the.

Speaker 4

Former president vowed to stand against anti Semitism on college campuses. I will be your defender, your protector. But he also repeated the anti Semitic trope that American Jews have a dual loyalty to Israel, and he said Israel has to defeat Kamala.

Speaker 5

Harris Iziel, I believe has to defeat her.

Speaker 4

Trump expressed disappointment that Jews haven't supported him in greater numbers. He said Jews would share the blame if he loses in November. The Jewish people would have a lot to do with the loss. Stephen Portnoy, ABC News Washington coming.

Up, scams, scams and more scams. Everything you need to know to avoid them. By the way, Aki Weathers brought to us by the Good Feet Store, improving people's lives two feet at a time. And you need something dry on your feet. The flip flops are not going to work, not today, not tonight, not tomorrow. Maybe Sunday. But your toes might get a little bit cold because we're gonna be a lot cooler fall arrive Sunday. Are you excited about that? I know a lot of you are. Some

of you are sad about summer leaving us. And leaving us like this. We have rain and steady rain, heavy rain for the Cape and islands, and you know it's so sticky. The icky stickies are back tonight low fifty six to sixty tomorrow mostly clytie, breezy, couple of showers, especially on the Cape and the Islands. But just keep in mind we are so dry out there. Well, the dry is our lawns, our height ranges, our plants and everything is just really really in need of some raine.

So that's the upside of this weather. Let's go to the fair, the tops Field Fair. People purchasing tickets for the tops Field Fair, which is a great take, say they're being scared a hundreds of dollars in a buying more tickets that simply don't exist. WBZTV's Brandon true It spoke with a fairs GM James O'Brien about it.

Speaker 6

And I was extremely disappointed because I feel that our patrons, you know, work had for their money. I don't want anybody to be cheated. We're all about value right now. Was selling fifteen dollar Prefia tickets instead.

Speaker 5

The website you should be looking for at the fair's main homepage at Topsviillfare. Dot Org O'Brien is clear that the fair does not sell tickets on the secondary market, and tickets should only cost you fifteen dollars in advance and twenty dollars day of.

Speaker 6

Where a New England fear been here for two hundred and six years, that's a lot of reputation that we certainly wouldn't want to be tarnished over something like this.

Speaker 2

The Topsfield Fair opens in about two weeks on October fourth, which I'm really glad. When I was doing that story, I said, ooh, when does that open, because that's a fun fear to go to. I hope you have nice weather all right for that event. And Brookline Police here it is everybody, and this is not just Brookline in this particular case. We're focusing on this scam and Brookline, but we've done so many stories that are similar, so

listen up. Brookline Police are warning about scammers pretending to be officers from their department. Now at least one fraudster fraud Stir is calling around and threatening unsuspecting victims with jail time if they don't send money in the form of cryptocurrency crypto. So the scammer even changes their caller ID, so what looks like the call is originating from that Brookline Police department. They are so clever now thanks to new tech. Please say, real officers would never make a

call like this, They just wouldn't do it. And the whole thing is a really good reminder to never give out your personal information over the phone period, and you might want to mail that money directly to the department. You are now in the loop. For news up dates throughout the day, listen to WBZ News Radio on the iHeartRadio app. I'm Laurie Kirby, WBZ, Boston's news radio
