Mostly clear in Boston. Right now, it is seventy six degrees at eleven o'clock and you have made it to Friday. Thanks for joining us. I'm Nicole Davis, and here's what's happening. Watching breaking news into the WBZ news room. The Suffolk County sheriff has now been indicted on federal charges. Let's get the very latest from wbz's Ben Parker Sureff.

Speaker 1

Stephen Tompkins is charged with extortion involving the purchase of an equity interest in a Boston based cannabis company. A sixty seven year old sheriff was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of extortion under color of official right. He was taken into custody this morning in the Southern District of Florida and eventually we'll appear in

federal court in Boston at a later date. Tompkins is alleged to have extorted fifty thousand dollars from the owner of a national cannabis retailer seeking to do business in Boston. US Attorney Leah Foley says elected officials, particularly those in law enforcement are expected to be ethical, honest, Laura Biding not self serving. His alleged actions, she says, are an affront to the voters and taxpayers who elected him to his position, and to many dedicated and honest public servants

at the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. Ben Parker WBZ, Boston's News Radio Other.

News at eleven oh one. Some cancer patients in England are reporting miraculous results from a trial using mRNA technology. But it's the same technology that the FEDS recently stopped funding for. Here CBS's Vicki Barker.

Speaker 3

This patient has been pronounced cancer free two years after he was told his case was hopeless.

Speaker 4

They gave me a future, they gave me hope, and I am living my best life now.

Speaker 3

The trials now being expanded across the National Health Service in England, using mRNA technology to retrain each patient's immune system, focusing for now on patients whose head and neck cancers have spread, but it's hoped many other cancers will eventually be treated, even cured this way. Vicki Barker, CBS News, London.

Call last night on ESPN from Bristol, Connecticut, a dramatic play at the plate as Braintree steals home on a pass ball and extra innings to beat Bedford New Hampshire three to two and eight innings. Braintree takes home the New England regional title for the first time ever. And we'll represent New England at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Their first game is this upcoming Thursday at three o'clock, taking on the Southeast Region. All games

will be broadcast on ESPN. Jim McKay WBZ Boston's News Radio.

Speaker 2

Now, there's a preseason football game in Foxborough tonight, but a lot of attention is focused not so much on the game, but more on a giant veiled statue hidden underneath a deep blue sheet over to let sits the new bronze Tom Brady Statue. This is about to be unveiled before the game tonight against the Washington Commanders. Both Number twelve and Robert Craft are going to be there for the ceremony, and reports do say that Brady hasn't seen this yet, so it's going to be surprised for

all of us. If you can't make it to that game, you can also watch the ceremony on the Patriots website. It is eleven oh four. Looking over at the forecast for the next few days, it is going to be phenomenal outside. We have nothing but sun. All that wildfire smoke is out of our neck of the woods now we have moved on from that for the time being, and really looking ahead for the rest of the day,

it's going to be very quiet, mostly sunny. We have a high in the mid to upper seventies if you're right on the coast, eighty five inland, and then tonight clear skies with a lone near sixty in Boston. Fifties if you're in the suburbs. Then for the weekend, of course, we have to know what it's like at the beach and so on and so forth. Plenty of sun for tomorrow, high near seventy five on the coast, mid eighties inland,

mostly sunny. On Sunday a little bit more with a high in the mid to upper eighties and looking closer to eighty right on the Capan Islands. Then as we move into Monday, it's going to be very sunny, but the humidity is going to start creeping back up, and we have highs again in the low to mid nineties. So a hot stretch is coming our way in a

matter of days. Seventy six degrees in Easton, where it's seventy five in Hudson, seventy eight in Boxford, and in Boston at eleven oh five it is clear outside, gorgeous blue skies and seventy six degrees.

Speaker 6

Well.

Speaker 2

The state's sales tax holidays this weekend, but not everybody's too excited about it. Here's wbz's James Rohas.

Speaker 5

There's a long list of things that will be exempt from the six point twenty five percent sales tax, things like shoes, school supplies, furniture, sporting goods, and electronics. But not everyone is enticed by the guarantee of saving money.

Speaker 2

Yeah, no it doesn't, because you know, I already have all those things already, so it's nothing for me.

Speaker 5

Then there are some who are just sour over the idea of the whole thing.

Speaker 3

If they should basically knock it off. You know, with the taxes, we get tax way too much.

Speaker 4

It's here, but I'm not gonna go crazy for it because i can just drive right over the border.

Speaker 5

Yeah sor right. So clearly not for everybody, but saving any amount of money this weekend could be a big deal for those in need of a big deal in Metford. James Rojas, WBZ, Boston, SNOOS Radio.

Speaker 2

Israel's Security Cabinet has now approved plans to take over Gaza City. The decision stops short here of seizing control of the entire territory. That is what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanya, who is pushing for here. CBS's Tina Krause.

Speaker 7

Families of hostages still held by Hamas, protested outside Netanyahu's office in Chains, saying Israel's expanding military offensive puts their loved ones in even more danger. The UN warns a complete military takeover would risk catastrophic consequences for hostages and

Palestinian civilians. The Security Cabinet also adopted five princes for ending the war, including disarming Hamas, returning all hostages living and dead, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, Israel maintaining security control and the establishment of a civilian government that's not controlled by either Hamas or the Palestinian authority.

Speaker 2

Hamas has condemned the plan, calling in a quote, full fledged war crime that they say will come at a high cost. And a new feature on Instagram is causing some concern and confusion among users.

Speaker 4

Instagram friend map let's users share their live location with a select group of friends, rolled out this week, but it did have some users worrying about privacy and security. The head of Instagram is clarifying that you do have to opt into this feature. It will not automatically share your location. Your location will only be shared if you choose to share it, and that if you do, it will only be shared with the group that you choose.

Speaker 2
