This is WBZ Boston's news radio, redefining local news fifty four degrees in Boston at four o'clock. Good afternoon on Ben Parker. Here's what's happening. A long day in court for Karen Reid's case, with two separate hearings today in two separate courtrooms. It started this morning in Federal court in Boston, where Read's defense continued their push to get two of the three charges against her dismissed. The judge

in that case says he'll issue ruling asap. Her team then made their way to Norfolk Superior Court in Denham, where they're trying to get the case tossed ahead of her second trial. WBC's I'll Shaffle with more.

Speaker 2

Karen Reid's defense is pushing to end her second murder trial before it even begins. Her legal team is taking aim at what it calls extraordinary governmental misconduct in the case. Most of their time in this motion to dismiss as focused on video evidence of Karen Reid's car after it was seized by Canton police. Attorney Alan Jackson says the prosecution withheld that evidence intentionally.

Certainly, we should have been able to explore that trial, but we did not have the videos.

The Commonwealth did, though. In response, Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan says the Commonwealth hadn't held on to the videos inappropriately and practically. Scoffed at some of the defense's other claims of jury tampering.

There isn't even ordinary evidence. There is no evidence of jury tampering in this case.

The defense also trying to get some of those charges dropped in Boston Federal Court, including the murder charge. The judge there says they'll come to a decision quickly. Kyle Schaffel WBZ Boston's News radio.

In Washington, today, a congressional hearing before the House Committee on Oversight hind Government reform. Mayor Michelle Woo one of those on the hot seat. Wz's Brook McCarthy explains.

Seated beside the mayors of New York City, Denver in Chicago. Mayor Michelle Wou opened her testimony by noting crime is down in Boston and she's the daughter of immigrants.

A city that's scared is not a city that's safe. A land ruled by fear is not the land of the free.

The four Democratic mayors testifying about their city sanctuary policies, saying the Trump administration and Congress are exaggerating crime committed by immigrants whoever. Republicans say they're undermining President Donald Trump's mass deportation efforts. Mayor ru was questioned by Congressman Paul Gozar of Arizona over which laws take precedent federal or local. She used that as an opportunity to advocate for what she'd liked to see come out of Congress.

Stop cutting Medicaid, stop cutting cancer research, stop cutting funds for veterans. That is what will make our city safe.

Some lawyers are using President Trump's own words against him in a lawsuit challenging Elon Musk's Department of Government efficiency.

The Trump administration has repeatedly said Elon Musk is not formally in charge of DOGE. It says Amy Gleeson is the interim DOGE administrator, But during his address to a joint session of Congress last night, the President touted DOGE and added.

In their new filing, the attorneys called Trump's remarks new evidence that DOGE is not complying with the transparency requirements for advisory commits.

some pretty nasty storms going on right now. So there's a lot to come, and it will head to the north and east through the evening and eventually get here, dumping lots of rain on us and picking up the winds too, some damaging winds with some of those downpours and thunderstorms. Tonight fifty for the low, more clouds than sun. Tomorrow, we do get rid of the heavy rain. We may

keep a shower or two around for good measure. Temperatures closing in on sixty degrees tomorrow, blustery and then much colder Tomorrow night Parkley cloudy twenty nine in the city, a little colder than that in the suburbs, and with the wind around, temperatures will fall at least it feels like temperatures into the teens. Blustering and cold. On Friday, forty three for the high not bad, but with the wind and it'll be temperatures feeling like they're in the

thirties with plenty of sunshine. More sun on Saturday, a few clouds too, Temperatures in the mid forties. Right now, fifty four degree is sin Boston, one of the oldest surviving greenhouses in America, swings open its doors for a very special bloom. Wbz's Jamba Lett we details.

The Lineman. The State Greenhouse in Waltham is in the midst of Chamelion days, when vibrant reds, whites, and pinks pop out and bud They would beautiful.

They're staggered, so we don't have all of them all at once, so you'll be able to see kind of a rolling variety.

It's one of five big events the greenhouse has in a year. Amy Beth mclenn tends to them and says they can be a little temperamental with the temperature.

We're continuously trying to vent.

We have the shadeloff to help mediate that as well, but so far, so good.

We haven't had a lot of damage for this yeal this year.

The Vatican says Pope Francis is getting more active in the hospital.

On this ash Wednesday, Pope France has received ashes on his forehead and Holy communion at the hospital in Rome. The Vatican says he remains in a stable condition and received oxygen through a nasal tube during the day. The eighty eight year old Pope is suffering from chronic lung disease. Tonight he will resume the use of a non invasive mechanical mask. His prognosis remains guarded.

At is CBS's Sabrita Castle Francol, where people are taking preventive action when it comes to cancer. Some cancer screenings have rebounded since the pandemic sent the numbers tumbling.

Brest and colorectal cancer screenings have returned to pre pandemic levels as of twenty twenty three, according to a study from the American Cancer Society published in JAMA Medical Journal. Lead researcher Jessica Starr.

Speaker 7

This is particularly meaningful because we saw very large disruptions in cancer screening during the COVID nineteen pandemic, and this can have massive implications on the stage at diagnosis for cancer.

The study find cervical cancer screenings are still below pre pandemic levels through twenty twenty three. Twenty jilyt CBS News.
