News thirty two degrees in Boston at four o'clock. Good afternoon, I'm Ben Parker. Here's what's happening. Boston City Councilor Tanya Fernandez Anderson appears today in federal court on corruption charges. She pleads not guilty to all charges and asks the judge to appoint a public defender for her and she's unable to afford a lawyer, and of the Viz's Kendall Buell has more. Fernandez Anderson was in dire financials traits.

Speaker 1

US attorney Josh Levy says due to a five thousand dollars fine she paid for violating state ethics laws by hiring her son as an office manager. According to investigators, that led to a kickback scheme involving hiring a family member.

This unidentified person was then given a bonus more than twice as large as given to the rest of the staff, combined thirteen thousand dollars, allegedly with the agreement that the District seven councilor would get a kickback, and she did, Levy says, in the form of seven grand in cash handed over in a city hall bathroom, and.

Speaker 3

Not only was these taxpayer's funds being stallboves happening right in the building where she works.

Speaker 2

So my personal opinion, I think it adds the egregiousness of this conduct.

Speaker 1

No one else has been charged, Levy says. The investigation continues from the mostly federal courthouse Canni BUWBZ, Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2

The judge releasing Fernandez Anderson on certain conditions today, including surrendering her passport and staying in Massachusetts. Meantime, Boston Mayor Michelle Wou in a statement, is calling for the counselor

to step down from her job. Looking for more clues in the ongoing manhunt for the person who shot United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson to death outside of New York City, hotel, investigators tell ABC News they believe they were able to score DNA samples from several pieces of evidence discovered at or near the murder scene.

Speaker 4

The mayor said today that police are on the right path to catching this guy, but they still haven't formally identified him. That they have him arriving at the Port Authority bus terminal at nine pm on November twenty fourth, checking in and out of the hostel on the upper west.

Speaker 2

Side, that is ABC's Aaron Katirski. The US Department of Agriculture ordering the testing of raw milk for bird flu.

Speaker 3

No cases of bird flu virus have been confirmed in people who drank raw milk, but with bird flu already detected in seven hundred and eighteen US cow herds, the new federal order requires raw unpasteurized milk samples nationwide to be tested. This comes after a California farm producing raw milk recalled products which tested positive for the bird flu virus. Pasteurized milk, which is he treated, kills the virus and remains safe to drink. A federal appeals court in DC has upheld the law that requires the sale of TikTok.

Speaker 5

The unanimous holding of the three judge panel is that China based Byte Dance must sell TikTok by January nineteenth, or rely on President Biden to grant a ninety day extension as the company works toward a sale. If not, the court says, TikTok will effectively be unavailable in the United States at least for a time, and its millions of users will quote need to find alternative media of communication.

The company has insisted TikTok is safe for Americans, but the judges site China's hybrid commercial threat to US national security and Beijing's desire to gather data on America.

Speaker 6

On a rainy day recently, Sage Carbone went outside her East Cambridge apartment and was shocked to see the first translated sign was up.

Speaker 7

I think I'm still in awe of this project starting, and I feel really full of joy.

Speaker 6

She's Native American and it was her idea to translate the signs, something she had seen on reservations.

Speaker 7

But I hadn't seen any municipality make an effort to include indigenous language in their signs.

Speaker 6

Even those city residents voted for the new signs. Vice Mayor Mark McGovern says some people have commented online that it's un American.

Speaker 2

It's honoring the culture that that existed before we got here, and that doesn't hurt anybody. I see it as only a positive thing in Cambridge.
