Speaker 1

This is WBZ, Boston's news radio. We defining local news.

Speaker 2

Seventy two degrees in Boston right now, partly cloudy at four o'clock. Good afternoon, I'm Nicole Davis. Here's what's happening. President Trump has ordered two US nuclear submarines to be positioned around parts of Russia, although it's not exactly clear where. He says on social media. This is in response to former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev making quote highly provocative statements, going on to say words can often lead to unintended consequences.

Medvedev this week responding to President Trump cutting down the deadline for a deal to end the war in Ukraine, saying each new ultimatum is a threat. This comes as the federally funded nonprofit that supports public broadcasters is officially shutting down.

Speaker 3

Corporation for Public Broadcasting was established by Congress in nineteen sixty seven to fund the nation's non commercial radio and television stations, but with Congress acting at the President's request to pull back the next two years worth of funding, CPB CEO says the entity now faces the difficult reality of having to shut down. Most staff positions will be

eliminated at the end of the fiscal year. On September thirtieth, a statement says a small team will stay through next January to close out operations.

Speaker 2

You PC Stephen Portnoy with that update. President Trump's Mid East Envoy, Steve Wickcoff, was in Gaza today for a time with Mike Huckabee, the US Ambassador to Israel. They visited some food distribution sites. This comes as international pressure ramps up on President Trump, the US, and Israel to do more to get much needed food and medicine to starving Palestinians. The UN says hundreds of people have been killed at or near these distribution sites since May as

they try to get food for their families. International experts say widespread death is imminent in the region and a quote worst case scenario of femine is playing out in Gaza. It's four h two and President Trump is not happy with the latest jobs report. In response, he has now told US team to fire the stout's chief over the Labor Department. The report was weaker than expected this time around, mister Trump claiming without evidence, the staffer has been manipulating

numbers for political purposes. This comes as leaders around the world scramble to figure out how to respond to his new tariffs.

Speaker 1

His executive order sets tariff rates on sixty six countries, the European Unions, twenty seven members, Taiwan and the Falkland Islands. It came amid a flurry of agreements with nations seeking to avoid being on his list.

Speaker 4

We're making a lot of deals.

Speaker 1

Some saw their terif rate lowered, like Taiwan, which wants it down even further. Others like New Zealand, are dealing with a boost.

Speaker 5

It appears New Zealand has been impacted by a very blunt formula.

Speaker 1

In Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry says there are no winners in a trade war. China does have an extension to keep negotiating a deal and for now is not being hit with new tariffs. You would. It's the same in Mexico, where President Clodia Shanebaum says her strategy worked. Sager Maganie Washington.

The weekend forecast is looking phenomenal and even this afternoon getting into this evening, not that humid at all. Lots of sunshine. We are looking good across the board. We've got temperatures in the low seventies, a couple of upper sixties right by the coast, getting down to about sixty on the coast tonight, and in Boston fifties in the

suburbs under mostly clear skies, not that humid. Tomorrow either, are plenty of sunshine, beautiful day, a high year seventy five Tomorrow night clear with a lone year sixty in Boston, fifties inland and then Sunday a little bit warmer, but still plenty of sunshine out there and still not that humid. We have a high to rather on Sunday in the low eighties. Seventy four degrees in Seabrook, New Hampshire. Right now seeing seventy two in Newport, Rhode Island, getting over

toward the Berkshars if you're heading out west. Were at seventy five in Great Barrington, and in Boston at four oh five it is partly cloudy and seventy two. The mayoral race in Framingham is catching the attention of national media outlets well because of a very unfortunate name.

Speaker 4

Jeffrey Epstein is running for mayor of Framingham.

Speaker 1

Let's go meet him for Hey, Jeffrey, how are you so?

Speaker 4

It's actually Jeffrey with a G, but he prefers to go by.

Speaker 5

Jeff epsteng perfect and I'm running for mayor in Framingham.

Speaker 4

In the last week, he's been making national headlines from Politico, huff Post, Daily Beast, News Nation, even Jimmy Fallon get in on the fund. I'm not sure what's worse that his last name is Epstein or that he spells Jeffrey.

Speaker 5

With a G. I see nothing wrong with my name. Actually, I'm an alive astrident. I'm not a dead American.

Speaker 4

But the comments on his Facebook ad campaign might have you questioning that.

Speaker 5

Show me the list, you know, it's like now, So.

Speaker 4

In that regard, the name might be a bit of an annoyance, but there's a major silver lining.

Speaker 5

Cause you can get people's attention with this. But for me, the important thing is to try and illuminate the issues of the very real forbody who lives here.

Speaker 4

Matt Sheer WBZ Boston's news radio.

Speaker 2

You can go see Jeffrey and Matt on our TikTok and Instagram feeds us on both of those at WBZ News Radio four six. In Fall River, the owner of the Gabriel House assisted living facility is being sued for a second time. This latest suit was filed on behalf of three people who survived last month's fire at the facility. Ten people were killed dozens more were hurt. In the lawsuit, they claimed the owner didn't do enough to enforce a no smoking policy and the owner should have known residents

were smoking in their rooms at times near oxygen. Fire officials say that combination is likely what caused the violent fire that tore through the building, not the resident filed a separate lawsuit last week claiming negligence on the facilities. Part owner Dennis Etscorn, has declined to comment, a spokesman

saying he has yet to see that lawsuit. Many roads here in the Bay State are going to be packed full of bike riders this weekend, some seven thousand of them taking part in the Panmass Challenge, including a member of the WBZ news radio family.

Speaker 6

The race offers more than a dozen roots, and some of them are really long too. One of the good guys in our newsroom is riding again this year, the second ride for Z reporter Jay will Lette. He's doing one of the long ones, one hundred and sixty two miles. Woo Jay rides for his dad John and for Dana Farber. John died from melanoma in twenty sixteen.

Speaker 7

You know, it started out with raising money because my father passed, but then it went on to be kind of a collective.

Speaker 6

I'm from Duxbury. It's spread team Willpower. That's who you want to look for on the course. And this year, Jay says, one of the focuses is on family friend Kyle Donahue. She's gone through chemo round after chemo round fighting brain cancer. She's in a good spot right now. Nice going, Kyle. As for Jay will Lett, well, hey, try and avoid that flat tire issue you had last year.

Speaker 1

True story.

Speaker 7

It's funny people treat me like an expert because I've done it. The one time you look like a biker, you do you get the whole long build.

Speaker 1

I can reach the pedals.

Speaker 7

It's great.

Speaker 6

A great New England Weekend tapeard. Thank you, Jay will Let, Drew Mahalan WBZ Boston's News Radio.
