The most transformative and significant event in modern Chinese history was the Cultural Revolution. Imagine chaos, betrayal, and epic power struggle on a scale that makes Game of Thrones look like an episode of Barney and Friends.
After Mao lost face from the debacle of the Great Leap Forward, he unleashed the most radical communists in China in order to secure power back from the moderates. The deets are in the episode, but long story short, millions died and Chinese society has never been the same. This week we take you from the beginning in 1966 to around 1968, the bloodiest phase of the Revolution. Next week we’ll bring in Nixon and Kissinger talk about how the US bumbled its way into this one.
