¶ Podcast Welcome & Charity Efforts
you Welcome to an all new episode of the Lisa Ann Experience. I am your host, Lisa Ann. Thank you so much for making time to have me in your ear to hear my little stories, conversation with friends. We always follow it up with a fun little mail. that you can be a part of as well at asklisaann at gmail.com. Today, before I bring you in on this little conversation with my friend, I want to catch up and talk about good and great and all the things that we can all do.
to just be our best self. One of the great things I decided to do was the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, a day where everybody is rushing out for sales to buy a bunch of things they really don't need, but because they're on sale, there's this need. I've learned through The Minimalist that there's no price for something you don't need, whether it's on sale or not. And so I want to inspire some sharing. I launched a fundraiser for blessings in a backpack on my Instagram at the really Sam.
My target goal was $1,000 and that goal was just reached yesterday, which is why I'm bringing it up. But the fundraiser is still active and open. I will continue to do these. I no longer accept gifts or anything from friends, fans, or followers.
¶ Battling a Challenging Day
followers so everyone knows that blessingsinabackpack.org is very close to my heart. It helps children in the United States that go home with food insecurity, which is not anything that we want to hear or know is even happening. So take part today, check out the fundraiser, or just go to their page at blessingsinabackpack.org and make a donation today. Before we get into this wonderful conversation I'm about to say, I'm going to share with you something that...
You know, I don't often go out publicly and say I had a horrible day. People who know me, maybe those who were in my live last Friday for the live premiere, got a little gist of what I had dealt with. Friday? It was just a shit day. It was one of those days, the first bit of news I got. And let me just set the table here. Fridays during fantasy football season, I visit radio shows all over the U.S. throughout the day.
Then I end the day with some IG lives at Bovada, where we give betting picks on games that we're looking at for the week ahead. It's a hectic day. And then I do a YouTube live premiere at 2 p.m. So sitting still for that for an hour to an hour and a half, however long the podcast is. So it's a day where I'm kind of locked at my desk and I like to get up and be able to move freely.
strapped in with the headset doing radio shows. Then I sit still for the podcast. And my first email of the day that day was me finding out that my new book is not going to come out in 2021. And I was... devastated. Like, just like, oh, it's the crushing blow that I didn't want to hear. It's out of all of our control. Nothing I can do about it. Nothing the printers can do about it. It's labor shortages. It's shipping delays. There's just a list of things, a list of variables. And again.
One thing we learned during the pandemic was patience. I had to exercise my patience. I had about an hour to digest that. During that hour, I thought I'll go over. I had a shipment, a large shipment of calendars that I'm selling on my store. thelifelisaann.com. I order usually in smaller shipments out of my anxiety and fear that if it gets lost, it won't be as big of an investment loss. And I'll just continue to order small orders. And then if one shipment gets lost, whatever, whatever.
But this time I went in on the hundred pieces. I also ordered some notebooks to go with my new book and they have the cover on them. So this was going to be like a big, big, big package. And it was there, but they lost it. So for an hour. We're trying to find it. And now I've got to go. I can't help them anymore because I've got to go back and do more radio and I've got to do all the other things. So all of these things were like piling on and piling on.
It was also a day where I felt a lot of people are giving me their bad energy, where it's just a bad attitude or it's a bad tone or it's negativity through direct message. Like everybody wants to send me their worst news. their local area by direct message. When I get a direct message, especially on a radio day, a lot of the producers and different people that I patch in with will give me a different maybe IP address for me to patch in because I use a device that I put their IP address in.
And it connects me directly with the studio, which makes it sound like I am in studio. It's pretty sick. I'm glad I invested in the Comrex device. So when a message pops up, I've got to check it, right? And it's just this constant... information that's information overload that's not
mindful of the space that I'm in. It's a distraction. It's just a distractor. And so I'm always trying to prevent distractors in my day. Distractors can really throw you off and can really make you behind. And so when I get... a couple hundred of these distractors a day, whether it be on IGDM, whether it be on Twitter DM.
It is heavy. And I try to tell everybody, like, why are you bringing all this bad news to me, especially when it's bad news in a city, state, country that I'm not in? And especially because I have a news reader. I read at least three hours. of news a day. I read local news. I read state news. I read foreign news. I read... investment news. I read, I know what's going on. There's not a story that can be sent to me that I don't have my fingers on the pulse of that situation. So it was that.
It was everybody just projecting. And I don't know if it's the holidays. I don't know if it's the news, you know, random news about pandemic woes or whatever it is that has created this state of mental health. kind of concern. And then everybody feels that I'm the person that they should be going to with their woes and dumping them on me. So by four o'clock, I was like,
holy shit, how am I going to get through my next two appearances? How am I going to play the game as if I'm totally fine and I'm completely invested in every bit of sports, dude, when really I'm trying to declutter my DMs and trying to... to push off this negative energy and trying to handle business with people who are just straight up cranky and giving me a shitty attitude when I didn't give the people a shitty attitude that let me know my book isn't going to be released this year.
And I already paid for all of the copies of my book. And my work was done in the spring. And my release date was supposed to be October. I'm not giving anybody attitude. No, I'm still having to put on that face. I'm still having to create that magic. I am still having to put myself right back
¶ Prioritizing Self-Care & Reset
in a better, higher frequency and deflecting all of this negativity. So by four o'clock, I said, okay, I have 10 minutes. I have 10 minutes to lay down in silence and meditate. and try and lift some of this heaviness off of me. So I laid down my couch, I'm meditating and how can I, what can I, how can I, what can I, and I realized, you know what?
You need to completely disconnect from this. You are done at 5.50 p.m. today. Call the local spa and see if there's a massage available at 6. This is the answer I came up with while I was meditating. Because self-care is the best answer or solution when I feel myself has been completely battered by the day. And I knew I needed to step away from my computer. I knew I needed to step away from worrying. And I knew the second I put that.
lavender oil on the sheets, which I like to sprinkle on before the massage therapist comes in. I set all this stuff up. I set my favorite spa music up. Like I've got it set up exactly the way that I want it. And so that moment by 4.07 where I got up. And I said, this is what I'm going to do. I was lucky. The six o'clock appointment was available. That's what I realized. Here's the shift. Here's the shift of energy I needed so I could still be strong for everyone else who needs to lean on me.
So I feel this shift. I map out. I'm not even going to worry that my office is a mess. When I'm done working at 550, I'm going to put on my sweats. I'm going to run to the spa. I'm going to get my massage, come back, sit in the sauna. take a shower and go directly to bed. I don't care if it's 830. I'm going directly to bed. This is a restart. This is just like pause, restart. And that's what I did. And I will say the energy shift was exactly what I needed.
I felt a sense of pride that I was able to remove myself from everybody else's stuff and take care of me. And it's so important that we think about self-care. And it's so important that sometimes We just put everybody else off and we refuel ourselves. And that's what I did. And I was in bed by nine o'clock, eight 30 ish. I probably asleep by nine o'clock because I was exhausted. I woke up early Saturday morning.
got in a great workout, sat in the sauna again, got about my day, did all of my things, filled a bunch of calendar orders. The post office had found my package. I picked it up. I did realize that a 50-pound package was tricky to carry across the street, but I looked at it as an extra workout, and I managed. It did take some time of stopping and readjusting this huge box, but I was like, I ordered a cart, don't worry about it.
I now have a cart coming from Amazon because obviously I don't want to be doing that. But I will say that was the shift in energy that I needed. So it was taking that 10 minutes of laying down and quiet. removing myself from everybody's DMS and saying, I just can't help everybody today. Um, removing myself from everybody's bad energy and saying, I can't carry everybody's moods and problems.
I have enough of my own that I'm balancing. There were a million other things that came to me work-related that day that were my things that I don't have anybody to go to. See, everybody comes to me, but I don't have anybody else to really go to. So I have to process all of this data. And I was clearly on data overload. But the key to the story is knowing when to say when.
And when to just put your hand out and just make that little buffer between you and the world and say, what can I do in this space to make me feel better and to bring me back to the higher frequency that I want to be on? So it was a successful mission. I am back on track, but I'm still not thrilled that even still getting messages that are not.
important messages. I thought that's what direct messages were for. But again, I'm going to have to figure out a way and I'll do that over the holidays, how I'm going to do this. Maybe I'll have to unfollow a bunch of people. Maybe I'll just have to, I've had a lot of individual conversations saying, can you please stop sharing?
mail with me by DM. I go and check the message and it's not something that, that I can do something about at this current time. And I'm not mother nature. I can't prevent storms. I'm not the government. I can't prevent mask mandates. Like I'm not that person. I don't know why everybody thinks that. putting all of this on me is valuable, but it's actually really toxic and draining and exhausting because then I'm always late on posting.
a flyer that I'm doing an IG live with somebody else. Like these are the rhythm that I have to be in 10 minutes before a live. I've got to post this on my social and I've got to pin it that I've got to do one in my story on live.
Then I've got to confirm by direct message or text with that person that they're going to be ready in five minutes. Like there's this whole thing I have to go through. And I often get thrown off of that because that 10 minutes is so crucial. And when I'm trying to go through the messages and it's just so cluttered with.
stuff. So I will come up with a better system. But at least in the immediate that day on Friday, I was able to regroup, get a really good night's rest, recharge, feel really good on Saturday, and bring myself back to center.
¶ Introducing Haley Gold & Music
As I bring myself back to center, one of the things that keeps me incredibly centered... are my young friends. I have a lot of friends that are my age and older, but my young friends are a lot lighter about life. And so I gravitate to them because they're still in that fun, not worried about everything about the world, not stressing on everything. There's this freedom with youth that just we all lose and that so I gravitate towards it.
And that's why I have so many friends between the age of 20 and 30 or 20 and 35, because their perspective is fresh. They're living in the moment. They're not as much hemming and hawing. They don't get wrapped up in the negative. They see the positive first, the negative second. And so my new friend, Haley Gold, who we're going to sit and have a conversation with together, she's a songwriter.
musician, artist and a really inspiring young human. The first night we got to spend together was the night before she was leaving for her first trip overseas. And I was just sitting there giving her all these packing tips and little things that she could do and little things that she should look for. And it was just this great back and forth of sharing my ideas and my experiences to help her trip be easier. And we just kicked it off right then and there. We've stayed.
close in touch. She's doing some shows in this city that I'm going to get to go to in 2022. But before that, I wanted to introduce her to you. You can follow my friend Haley Gold at Haley Gold with two Ds. And you can also check out everything about her on her website, HaleyGold.com. I bring you my friend Haley. Today on the Lisa Ann Experience, I have a very special interview with singer, songwriter, and friend, Haley Gold.
Kaylee, thank you so much for making time today to just chat with me and share your stories about your career. Oh my God, how can I not? Please. You are nothing but good to me and have given me such great advice that this is the least that I could do. Well, this is just the beginning, Haley. Our friendship is going to intertwine in many incredible ways. And I love the fact that there's so many things I've learned about you since I met you. And as I was preparing for the interview...
I was looking at your work and on your site, which everybody can go to, it's haleygold.com. And I realized that your single that you released in 2020 is titled one of my favorite things in the absolute world. When I see one. at any time during the day, I see it as a good luck sign. And I'm talking about Butterflies, your single. You wrote and put the song together, correct? Yes, I did. So that was actually one of the first songs that I wrote that I felt like.
Okay, like I can actually song right like this is pretty good Yeah, it was a bit of a great moment for me when it comes to singing and songwriting because a lot of the time when I am just thinking of ideas. It becomes very therapeutic and I want to make sure whatever that I put out is what I'm actually feeling. And it's, you know, not a lie and it's not unauthentic. So that song for me really stood out in the sense of, you know, I'm not.
feeling good or bad. It's more of like an in the middle type of where's the love type of song. So yeah, that was my first single. And your first single.
¶ Haley's Musical Journey
How long have you been pursuing music? And did you study music? Because you also, if I'm not mistaken, play an instrument. Oh, man. So my singing history goes way back to the dark ages of high school. The dark ages. High school was like four years ago for you, Haley. Five. You're 23 years old now, right? Oh, no. You just had a birthday. You're 24 now. Yes, I did. Thank you so much.
But so I actually was scouted from YouTube. I was in a girl group back in 2014 and Boyz II Men actually found our YouTube channel, reached out to us and became a management team and great men. mentors for when I was growing up for the rest of my high school and college career. So with that, I learned a lot about teamwork.
harmonization songwriting production skills and you know with girl groups always comes their like little battles and stuff like that so unfortunately the group didn't work out to its fullest potential but You got to be grateful for those sort of things because without that part of my life, I probably would not have been here right now.
It's yeah. I mean, that's amazing to think that boys to men reached out to you through YouTube, but just another medium where you get to display your work and you don't know who's going to see it, but smart management team. and other artists that want to collaborate really do look because they realize people don't all live in big cities. People don't all have access to meeting people and networking and all of those things. And so for them to reach out to you must have been.
Like, was there at any point where you didn't believe it at the beginning that it was actually them? You know, it's so funny. When we first got the emails and the phone calls from Sean, it was very like... Because we're all young and I'm not, you know, huge on R&B at the time. And I was also very young. So we had like all spoke about it and I spoke about it with my parents. And I was like, who's Sean? I was like, what's boys to men? And they're like, are you kidding me?
They were like, are you serious right now? And, you know, that was... That was a little bit of a dumb moment that I had. But with that being said. Not a dumb moment. It's just a generational thing. Your parents are my age. So, of course, we grew up with boys to men. Boys to men did every big event, Super Bowls, you know.
World Series, like, and their music, their harmony, you said harmonization and teamwork, like they gave us that at a time where we didn't have a lot of variety of that type of music and soothing and just beautiful. So what a gift for you. And when you say, you know, the girl band things happen, there's this old expression, the band broke up.
And it was, people would use it for a breakup in a relationship or a friendship. Oh, the band broke up. Because all bands kind of break up. An artist goes their own way. There's very few. I mean, some of the bands from the 80s, you know, Kiss, Motley Crue, they're still together, which is shocking, right? it's common, but it's also, that was kind of your foundation. It wasn't necessarily maybe going to be your forever. So that took you on this independent route when you were with the girl group.
¶ Songwriting, Travel, & Piano
Were you already writing and composing your own music? Yeah. So I write.
when it comes to i write easiest when i'm actually traveling so when i'm in a car or a plane or a train like i really just zone out throughout like looking at the window and i just write so every time we were traveling from like la to back to atlanta new york etc i was always just focused on filling up my notes on my iphone and just writing whatever came to mind regardless on if i made them songs or just thoughts it's always a constant process for me when it comes to writing um
At the time, I was more of, I was more invested in learning from everybody else older than me than really starting it out myself. So knowing from this time being independent, I took exactly what I learned and I moved forward. I'm very grateful. That's interesting that, you know, I'm most creative when I travel as well. And I think it's because you feel like you're in this kind of blank space. You're in an in-between. Your stuff isn't weighing you down. You don't have, you know, you're.
And it's just, I don't know. It's just a free. thinking and the train, like I love taking the train. The train to me is like the most soothing thing. Yeah. And I'm talking like we, we did a 12, uh, my friend Kay and I did a 12 hour train ride through Alaska and it started at the very
tip in Fairbanks and went all the way to Anchorage. It was so gorgeous, and it was just such a cool train ride. It was unbelievable. And people think such bad things about the train. They're always just like, why do you got to do it?
can't you just live in the city and all this other stuff and trust me i will move into the city that is on the list for sure but the train is such a process for me that it's like i'll do it like at any point in time and it's just you know a little comforting now i call IRR, like my little other home. Because you live in Long Island. And of course, when you do shows or go to shows or have networking events, they're all in Manhattan. So how long does it normally take you from door to door?
door to get like from your place in Long Island on the train to the city? So, um, during COVID actually, I finally put on my big girl panties and I learned how to drive in the city. So I know it was perfect.
because nobody was on the road. And I was like, if I- There was parking everywhere. And there was parking everywhere, right? Oh my God. But I actually had a moment in time where I got- three parking tickets in one day and that was just a shining moment of mine but normally it would take like a half hour 45 minutes for me without any hiccups right
So you did it. Oh, wow. But that was a great time for you to enjoy driving, being in the city, driving. I was riding the bike in the middle of the street, so I know exactly what you're talking about. What instruments do you play? So I am currently playing the piano. I haven't done it for a while. So I'm not like one of those crazy kids that grew up playing all these instruments. first started learning through harmonization and ear training and that helped me actually learn how to play the piano.
So I totally did a different route. I love the piano in terms of finding chords and melodies and stuff like that. And it's just also a great writing tool.
It is a great writing tool. And the piano is just a beautiful work of art mixed in perfectly with a song. There's just something about it. Do you have a piano at home or do you have to go somewhere and play? I have a jinky little Yamaha from... like the fifth grade that still works so I've been I've been using that I know like you did not expect any of these answers but that's exactly what it is
And no, it fits perfectly in a little corner in my room. And it's there as soon as I wake up and I just turn over and there it is on my side.
¶ Artistic Influences & Creativity
You're making it work. I mean, this is what you have to do when you've read about other artists that you really emulate. You, you see how they did their process. What artists do you really emulate style, your music ground, get inspiration from those types of things? So, like any other typical teenager back in 2009 to 2015, I was a believer. It was...
Gross. But I love him. I still love him. He's great. I do too. How can you not? I love his whole marriage. I love watching them together. I love all their posts. I'm a believer. I get it. So, I mean, he definitely brought a lot of inspiration in terms of anything is possible. And I... For a songwriting standpoint, I look to Julia Michaels, J.P. Sacks, James Arthur, all of those main songwriters, truly because they speak from their experience and they don't lie about it and they think.
of these crazy words that you wouldn't put in songs, but they make it beautifully work in melodies. So I always take that sort of inspiration when it comes to the creativity behind lyrics. I love that because it really makes me think about telling this story. And also in a sense, it's like being a good broadcaster or being a wordsmith of some sort, right? We're looking at the thesaurus and going, this is what I want to say. Is there another word?
that will drop in here and just make this smoother or make it more elaborate or tie it in better with a hitch somewhere else. You know, that's fascinating. And I love that you feel that because I imagine. I've never written a song before, of course. I've written poems, though. When I was a kid, I did win a creative writing contest in Pennsylvania in fifth grade. My grandfather...
submitted my poem about a puppy that used to go to a candy shop. I was on the cover of my local newspaper. Uh, they came in and shot me at class and I was sitting there writing and you know, when I. was young we had these erasable pens they were like oh I remember those yep okay okay so I had my little erasable pen like I was so so peak badass but When you write a song, does it make it easier to lyricize, to decide what instruments you want to bring in, what mixes and how you create?
the next layer to the music. So I, it's so funny because I play the piano, but I make sure that a guitar is present in every single one of my songs. I make that a staple of mine. And I think it's probably because the jealousy behind.
can't actually play it so like I want to make sure that it's there but um I really zone in more about um the feelings behind everything and it's like even if words don't rhyme it's me and it's authentic and that's exactly what it is so i truly just take it from a grain of salt perspective and I really detail it and then look at the bigger picture.
¶ The Thrill of Live Performance
I love it. We met through our mutual friend who also is part of your team and that's Christian. And Christian helps you get out there and do some gigs. You had done a gig. I want to say two months ago because Allie got to go and shoot some photos. What's it like when it comes together and who are you performing with, with your music? Oh my God. This is such a topic I've been like waiting to talk about because I absolutely love performing. So, um, when I was younger, I actually did a couple.
when I was with a girl group, when it came to touring for high schools and colleges, we did a little student tour and that definitely shaped me to learn how to perform for myself, but just as an artist independently. So I went from trying to look like NSYNC, being exactly the same as somebody else, to, okay, now I'm representing myself on stage. Who am I?
What show do I want to put on? So when it comes to all these live shows now, I'm doing a couple shows in New York City. I have one at Berlin Under A on January 5th, and I have another show on February 12th at Mercury Lounge. And they're completely my own set of original music that I cannot wait to finally put out. The EP is in its place. really giving it the cross and I'm letting it go. So I'm very excited about all this stuff.
I will make sure to be at at least one, maybe both of those shows. But it was probably something for you. I mean, you did put out a single in 2020, which means you were still creating. But did you feel that you missed that? that feeling of seeing faces excited to see you and, and feeling your music and just escaping into the actual moment. Oh, of course.
I feel like a way of growing as an artist, too, is being in front of the people and the fans that appreciate you and your music. So losing that touch in 2020 really... was a little bit of a sad moment but at the same time everybody learned about themselves and everybody learned how to be a better version of themselves during that time so
you know i'm just so excited to get back out and ready and to meet everybody and see also the reaction from all the new music that i have it's always a great um experience for me to see what everybody else is thinking because that helps me as a songwriter artists as well. Of course, you feel the vibe, you see the momentum and you're like, okay.
Every show you don't do, it doesn't always, you don't always get off stage and think that was a great show. Some nights you get off stage, you're like, man, I was like feeling it. Like that was just a great show. So I can understand that from being a performer on stage for many years myself. You said some. interesting. You said, we all learned how to be a better version of ourselves.
So what things did you learn about yourself during that town? I mean, you were fortunate. You have your family close to you. So you were able to be around your loved ones, which made it a lot easier for a lot of people who don't, you know, didn't have that opportunity. Maybe we're on their own.
And what did you learn about yourself, Haley? So what's crazy about that statement is that regardless on if 2020 is over, you're still learning about yourself every single day. And it never stops when it comes to the learning process. So I feel like I've grown into myself a little bit more than just the teenager who just dreams of being a singer and a songwriter. There's definitely more of a... business side of it and there's more of an authentic side of it now because i
now feel like I can let down that guard. When I was younger, I didn't want to talk to anybody. And that's why I started songwriting in the first place, because it was just me and my notes. When you start to grow up, you realize that talking to people is one of the best things that you can do. And the last thing you want to do is keep it all bottled in. you know and that's just a bad point in itself because you don't want to explode and it's you know i still feel like right now that
There's more opportunities for me to learn and there's more opportunities for me to see the world and explore and to meet everybody new. So, you know, I'm very excited to continue this journey and I'm very excited to become a better woman in myself.
¶ Exploring Austria's Culture
I love that. I love all of that. Speaking of exploring the world, you recently took a pretty cool trip overseas. You were gone for almost like two weeks. Let's talk about it because I've, oh, every time I've gone to a different country. I feel like a different person when I get back. I feel like I have more empathy and understanding for the world. I, you feel a different passion of how different cultures, you know, you sit, I'm a big people watcher and I would sit and just, you watch different.
countries at dinner and nobody is on technology like we are in the U S nobody hands their kid an iPad. Nobody is texting while someone is sitting in, as a matter of fact, most people's phones are away, not even on the table. So where did you. and what did you take home? from that trip in your spirit? Oh, so I went to two places in Austria. I first was in Vienna for four days and then I was in Salzburg for another three. So I was able to get the city and the neighborhood.
all in this one trip and what's wild to me is that everybody abroad it just seems like they're they're driven they know their it's almost like vienna wise very much like new york everybody's got a place to go everyone's got a place to be and like their mission is like to be accomplished that day so um i got that from vienna when it comes to salzburg there's definitely
more of a different lingo like I thought it was really fun to like pick with people's brains and like hear what they say in terms of like texting type of um slang and casual talk where like we say other things that are totally different they don't know what that means even the trends like the tick tock trends that we all find funny they're like what is that i have no idea what that is so
It was a cool experience. I actually left Salzburg early because they started shutting down the country. The country went into complete lockdown on the day after I left. so when i tell you i got out in like the hottest second it was it was wild and i only hope for just from that experience one
people still continue to take COVID seriously because it is no laughing matter. And you really see the difference in another country of where they are medically compared to where we are medically. So I... hope that people start to take their health a little bit seriously from that and even so too just the warmth and the kindness that the people gave me it's just nothing but love there.
And that's certainly something else that I've taken back from my trip as much as I am that person, but it's just the motivation to continue spreading that love. I agree. Even when somebody serves you, there's a different warmth and patience.
even though in this city, like you said, with Vienna, people are in their hustle, like New York, like, but when you go outside of the city, you just see that people like, I can remember my first trip to Italy. We sat at this restaurant that we had been told to go to. We had took us forever to find it.
We were in Rome and we sat down and we got our first, it was a prefix meal. So you're getting all these different, you know, like eight different things coming out, you know, every however amount of time we ate our first thing and the server came over and his broken English. And he said, um, So, you know, the faster you eat, that is not the faster you get served. Like it was supposed to be a four hour dinner.
And you're supposed to eat and then have, you know, a little limoncello in between or a coffee in between. You're supposed to sit there and enjoy the person that you're with. Like, this is the point of it. And so as Americans, it took us a couple of days to really adapt to understanding that. And then we found it's such a beauty. And that's what I like about going over to other countries is like.
You don't make as many plans. You kind of play it by ear if something takes a little longer. Whereas when my friends visit me in New York, they notice it and I never notice it because I'm used to it. But when we order food. it's there in like five minutes like you know it's there okay my friend's like
we just ordered. I'm like, yeah, but we've been talking. It's probably been about 10 minutes, you know, five, 10 minutes. They're like, yeah, but New Yorkers do not play. Okay. They're bringing you that food. They're checking on you. They're getting that table back because they know you've got somewhere to be and it's hot, fresh. beautiful food, but it's just the pace.
of big cities, especially in the U S but what you said about the lockdown, you know, I was supposed to go to Switzerland in December and they started to pull back where they said no large events. So that's why we were on the first layer of being canceled. I'll go next.
year. But when I took the gig, you know, it's one of those things where you're like your worst fear is to get locked in somewhere because you don't want to be in a hotel alone for that extra time. There's not going to be restaurants to go to. You're on vacation.
with nothing to do so you were very lucky that you were paying attention and that you got out first and i think the most important thing is like that yeah oh yeah It's the last thing you want when you go overseas is something catastrophic to happen because you're like,
What do I do? Will there be somebody that speaks good English to help me out of this situation? Do I call the airline while I sit on hold forever? Am I using roaming or am I on the Wi-Fi at my hotel for my cell phone? Oh my God. When I tell you, this is a thought.
¶ Unexpected Hotel Adventure
Funniest story. So I got to Vienna on my first day. And after the 12 hour flight, I'm like, thank goodness I could just, you know, take a shower, relax, chill out. I got no plans. So I get a call from a friend of mine there being like, oh, you're here. Like, let's go out to dinner. Dinner's in three hours.
So I'm like, sure, I'm going to take a shower. I'm going to rock and roll. This is great. I put my stuff down. There was still some light outside, so I didn't put on the electricity, but I went to the bathroom to turn on light. So the light wasn't working. completely dark i'm like okay maybe it's just me i don't know what it is i went to turn on the outside lights and that wasn't working
So my first thought was, okay, they gave me a really bad hotel room. Like this could be a problem. So I tried calling from my telephone downstairs to the front desk. Got no answer for maybe like 45 minutes. So I'm literally sitting there still in my airport clothes and like, screw this. I'm going to go and just take a shower in the dark. That's exactly what I did. Took a shower in the dark.
I was like, okay, this is great. Now I have to like get ready, blow dry my hair. I could do my makeup with a flashlight. I'm used to that. I'm a girl. So I went to go turn on the hotel. Oh my God, the hotel blow dryer.
and the thing wouldn't work. So I'm like, okay, now we have a huge issue here. Like it wasn't an issue to be taking a shower in the dark. It's the fact that I can't do my hair. So I went all the way downstairs in my robe, wet hair, slippers on. I was like, hi i'm the american that literally asks you a bunch of questions beforehand like i need help so this girl swipes my card and she was like oh it should work i'm like what do you mean
Like, I didn't need the card to get in. Like, it worked. You have to use the card for your electricity there. When she plugged that card into the socket on the side, I... I had no words. I literally just looked at her. I was like, mm-hmm. And do you know why they do that? Why? It's really to conserve energy. So what they don't want is people leaving lights, televisions, air conditioning and heat on when you leave a hotel room. Now.
it's a pretty easy loophole to get around because myself i would ask for two keys and i would leave one in when i left the room and leave the ac on because it's gonna you know You know, but, but, but, but this is years of traveling, but I will say I traveled way before they started doing that. And I remember you have to know something about me.
as I drink out of an aluminum can and I'm not a single use plastics person ever. And I'm such an environmentalist because I think we can all make a difference. I remember my first trip somewhere where this was a thing and it was in Italy.
And I looked at the door and the guy had walked me in. He said, so, you know, you have to put your key in here to use the electricity. And I said, oh, that's brilliant. I mean, this means people will not be able to be wasteful with leaving lights on and everything else. it's such an efficient way to do it it allows them to just know that you're only using stuff but if you don't know that
And somebody doesn't walk you to your room. And by the way, as you were telling me this story, I knew exactly what the outcome was. And I love that you winged it because that's the thing. Once you take a 12-hour flight and you get out of the country, you start to feel braver. Yeah. So when you're brave.
you're like, okay, I'm going to take a shower. But then reality sets in and you have to dry your hair. So now you're going to take action, right? The dark shower, no big deal. The makeup with the flashlight, no big deal. The hair though, now we got a problem. We're both Italian. I know you need to blow dry your hair.
You can't just let it be. So I get that, but it's these little things. Now there are some hotels in the U S that are starting to do that. There's some hotels in Vegas that are starting to do that. Just let me know. You just needed the walkthrough when you first got in, but I'm glad you took that trip. And as we get.
you know, as other countries are getting more vaccinated and we're getting more ahead of this by next year, we'll be traveling and we'll be doing things and your future, you're going to travel a ton. So you're going to learn a lot about how other. countries are just not as wasteful as us. I mean, I love in Australia, when you go somewhere and you go to wash your hands, most of the places you walk up the sink.
The water's there, the soap's there, and the air dryer is there, all in one space right in front of you. So you're not dripping water all over. But a lot of countries got rid of paper towels way before we did at airports or at hotels or what have you. do not waste like we do. They don't usually, you probably noticed that they brought the glass bottles out to fill your water at restaurants and you didn't see a lot of plastics there because they're already trying to prevent the habit forming.
thing that it is and save the environment because they can't afford to ship it to other countries to hopefully be recycled like we do in the U S so they're stuck with their rubbish. So they look at it like, Oh, we don't want single use plastics here, but how is the food?
¶ Austrian Cuisine & Travel Insights
when you were there and what was the unique thing that you ate on this trip it was a dream I mean first off like I go to my same old places here in New York So to just get away from that for a week and a half and just eat like authentic food, like Austrian food, like I'm particularly, particularly a healthy person, but. On this trip, I was like, all right, I'm not holding back. You have to eat whatever. Yeah, yeah. Everything. So I had schnitzels from like authentic, like Asian restaurant food.
do i have a lot of dim sum and a lot of um noodles they're really big on like broth bowls and noodles and stuff like that so i was like i'm down i've never had it in New York and there was no need for me to have it in New York. So it was very, very nice.
i felt like i was truly appreciating more of like culture behind all this stuff because again when you're in new york when especially i mean i guess long island it's like you're in a bubble so to get that exposure to just you know i'm lucky enough to be in the city as much as i am but you know what i mean like there's such a wall that gets put up in certain towns in suburbia where you
don't really know the difference between your elbow to your feet in other places so i truly was lucky and grateful enough to have experienced this trip and to enjoy all the food and enjoy the great company and just have you know a little adventure in my back pocket.
Yeah. I mean, also when you start going to the same restaurants, I don't know about you, but like I have a spot by me that I only order one thing. They have a massive menu, but every time I get the exact same thing and I know I got to break that habit, but it's the only reason I go to. Do that restaurant for that one thing. But when I'm traveling, I usually ask people.
to recommend things to me. I will eat anything. I will try anything. I'm not thinking about calories because you're walking and you're exploring. I'm not thinking about any of that. Also, the food is more pure outside of this country because. We're the only country that does steroids in animal products and does hormones in animal products. You know what's so wild though? A lot of Austria is mainly vegetarian and vegan.
yes I never realized so even so too like yes I had my fun days but more so it was like I was just kind of eating you know normally what I would eat as like a pescatarian vegetarian but You know, it was just fun to see the different types of meals that they can create around all these different things.
And they use different vegetables. And because everything is grown there and everything is organic, you get such a flavor of different style vegetables prepared a different way. Did you write at all while you were on this trip? Oh, man, I did. actually I did from my train to Vienna to Salzburg. But you know what's so funny on this trip, I really just said to myself, if it happens, it happens. I don't want to be motivated to write I just want to be
as laid back and enjoy this vacation time. Um, but just so happened drama just always sparks and I'm like, I gotta do it. Like I just have to do it. So yeah, I did. So you got in some good time. Well, you got two shows coming up January and February in the city, which we're going to make sure I'm going to make sure I promote Haley. Where's the best place? I know your Instagram is at Haley gold with two D's. Your website is Haley.
Haleygold.com. Where else can people follow it? Do you TikTok? Yes, I have TikTok. So it's all the same account, Haley Gold with two Ds on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, the whole nine. Very easy. Fantastic. I'm looking forward to watching your journey and also being a big part of it as you and I are going to start to get together and do some social media projects together. I want to have you here at my place in this city and cook for you a bit so you can learn to make some...
different things and I'll be at your shows supporting you. You have no idea how much of an impact you've made on my life in such a short amount of time when I first met you. And, you know, Christian could always tell you the afterwards, but in.
literally in the best way possible it just things happen at the right time and I feel like there was just always something that was like just looking out for me for a little extra extra push and that was you when I first met you so you have no idea how grateful I am. that you are literally in my life as a friend, as a mentor, as literally my guidance. So thank you.
¶ Lisa Ann's New Piano Inspiration
I love you so much. That was so sweet. Thank you so much for joining me for my podcast on the Lisa Ann Experience. You're the best, Haley. Bye. So incredible, the tie-in with the piano. Because when I was young, talking to Haley about the piano reminded me when I was young, I played the organ, then the piano. Then I have the piano conversation with Haley on that beautiful conversation we just had. And then I watched the first two episodes of Sex and the City.
And Lily, who is Charlotte's daughter, the actress that plays Lily, had a high school, a show, and she played piano with such passion. And it was so magnificent. And for about the last year since we've been starting to get to do things and get out more and I take walks and I see these piano shops, I thought, you know, why don't you take a piano class one day a week? Just get out, you know, something different to do.
And I've been thinking about it. And then I talked with Haley and then I see the sex in the city and I just know it is so meant to be. It'll be a new conversation for us to have, just like all the conversations we have that come in through. AskLisaAnn at gmail.com. We're going to get to a little mailbag, but before that, I want to remind my guys out there.

¶ Navigating Trust Issues in Relationships
All right, here we go. I am taking over the male lady responsibilities again this week with just a couple of questions that I wanted to bring to you and share with you. And what I'm seeing is... a lot of relationship questions like this one right here from our friend, Tom. Howdy, Elise. How can a man know that a woman is trustworthy? I'll give you the backstory behind this.
I'm a person that's naturally scared to let people into my intimacy. The psychology behind this is that today's friend could be tomorrow's deadly enemy. The fear or paranoia with regard to women is that when you engage a wife and a girlfriend, you take them in close quarters, they get to see you at your strongest and your weakest moments. Should the relationship sour, that's information they could potentially and will use against you. I'm a person with trust issues.
How do I let people in and set appropriate boundaries without using intimidation as a control mechanism to avoid potentially hurtful situations? Thanks, Bunches Tommy. Can we all just take a breath and a sigh for Tommy? I don't think his story is that unusual. And I do think that this level of fear, that's what I hear here. I just hear fear and allowing fear to control us limits our.
opportunities in life. Allowing fear to control us limits so many things. It keeps you on such a low frequency. And so to advise Tommy properly, which is something I couldn't do by an email. And I can't do with a mailbag. The first and most important thing is to seek help and to talk to a therapist. Speak to somebody once a week. It's so easy now because now you don't even have to go to an office. You can do these things virtually.
But share those secrets that you're afraid of with somebody that's trusted. in a neutral place, which is a therapist. Work through whatever it is that you can put to put your best foot forward. Because if this is what you're carrying with you, remember everything we carry with us is heavy. Look at life like suitcases.
The more you stuff in them, the harder it is to move. And if you're stuffing negative thoughts into the suitcases of relationships of your life, these heavy, heavy bags, they're going to weigh you down. and not allow you to move. We all have trust issues to some regard, but if you don't try something and you don't fail, you don't win. You have to fail. You have to win. You have to do both things.
Sometimes you have a great run with somebody and it falls apart. And that's part of life too. And when there's a breakup, I always say to somebody, at least you tried. You didn't keep yourself held back. You didn't keep yourself alone. Too many people are allowing themselves to believe the story that they tell themselves. The story that we tell ourselves shouldn't be negative. But from what I hear and from what I read in a lot of these emails, especially the dating ones,
The story that's told is the worst case scenario. I mean, when somebody says the psychology behind that is today's friend could be tomorrow's deadly enemy. That is the worst case scenario. Tommy, why are you only selling yourself on the worst case scenario? Why is the story you're telling yourself the worst case scenario?
Change the story. Watch the secret. Read the books of the secret series. Do the work. These aren't instant answers. I can't change your perspective. But you know, we work hard in this world to have money. We also need to work hard in this world to have a good mindset, to have a healthy approach to life, to have a healthy approach to others. But the story we tell ourselves is the story that we believe.
So if you believe this story, Tommy, it's the only one that's going to come true for you. And that's not what any of us want here, Tommy, at all. I got one more for you here, and it is from Victor.
¶ Lisa Ann's Fulfilled Life Journey
It's kind of interesting. Don't worry. Hey, Lisa. I hope all is great with you. My life question is, are you satisfied with your life where you're at in life? If not, what is it that you think you need to achieve in order to say that I am fulfilled and at peace? Also, was marriage and kids ever a thought for you? If so,
What's the reason you're not there? And if not, what made you come to this decision? Have you always wanted to be involved in sports or was sex work always your go-to? There's a lot here. There's a lot to unpack here. First answer I have to give Victor and to all of you is yes, I am completely satisfied with my life as I know it. And that's not something many people can say.
I'm satisfied because I took chances that enabled me to travel around the world. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than knowing the countries I visited. the dinners I've sat in on, the people that I've met, the things that I've seen so much life experience at a young age. I'm 49 right now and I've done what people did.
do in the retirement by traveling the world. I understand that a lot of men see women that are alone and self-sufficient and think automatically they can't be happy. They can't be satisfied.
I've never wanted kids. That's just my choice. I just never wanted kids. I always just wanted to be free and be able to live in another country or go to other places and do whatever. So I never wanted kids. And when it comes to marriage, I was married in my twenties. It didn't work out, but we had a damn good run.
before it fell apart, we're still friends this day. We have a respectful friendship. We keep in touch by text and we talk on our anniversary and you have to look back at the good and forget about the bad because there was enough good to make it last as long as it did.
So there's that. I'm not opposed to getting married again, but it's not something I'm in search of. I don't think there's anything that I am missing in my life that could make me feel one minute more complete than I already am. I am... the ruler of my own planet, shall I say? I'm my own boss. If things are too busy and too hectic, it's my fault because I put them on my schedule. I have incredible...
group of people, a team that I work with, that I love working with, that I get to communicate with on the regular. And they bring me a ton of joy and I get to live their lives through them. And I get to see the lives of others through my podcast, through my interviews, through my conversations. the books that I'm reading for authors that I'm going to have on the podcast. Very fulfilling work here. I love all of it.
And so I've sensed this more from men than women. Women don't have this question as much as men because men are just befuddled. You know, they don't know if a woman can financially take care of themselves. They don't know if a woman can be satisfied being on her own. But Victor and to my listeners, new or old, I am satisfied. I feel pretty lucky to have made it through the industry unscathed. I had a lot of fun.
Sex work wasn't my go-to. It's just I didn't have a lot of options as a young girl. And I made it a place to empower myself where I was able to work on financial literacy. have a plan for my future and be able to set myself up so that when I was this age right here right now I would be able to just work for myself and kind of be on cruise control
Sports was always my first passion, basketball being my first love. I played all through high school. I've also written two books, which you know from the beginning of the podcast, the second one's going to take a little bit longer to get out. But second book coming out in a coffee table book is in the works as well. which is going to be super fun to put together and super easy to put together because it's not as much in-depth writing.
I love to write. I love to share stories. I love to communicate. So I love that I am now able to use my communication skills that I got from my seven years working at SiriusXM. And my 30 years in the industry traveling the world and meeting people and having to adapt really brought me to where I am. So the question is answered. I am incredibly satisfied with my liking.
¶ Dallas Cowboys & Farewell
Victor, thank you for asking. There is part two, and it is a sports part to this question. My sports question is about the headache of the team, the Dallas Cowboys. We are both fans of the Cowboys, and I watch every single game they have played. What do you think the Cowboys need in order to finally get to the Super Bowl? And if by the miracle they did win the Super Bowl, would you be in Dallas to celebrate?
Thanks for your time and have a great holiday. I will be going to the Super Bowl with Bovada just like I did in 2020 when the Super Bowl was in Miami. I don't think the Dallas Cowboys have what it takes this season. I think we've dealt with, you know, between injuries like every team has to be faced with. We're getting it together. Dak coming back and having a remarkable season after such a gruesome injury. But I think next season will be.
be a much stronger season for us. I don't go to celebration parades. They're a little bit too hectic for me. Too many people at one place at one time, but the last time the Cowboys were in the Super Bowl in Arizona, 95, 96, I was there. So there's that. But Victor, I appreciate the question. And for all you out there that wonder, yes, I am completely good, chill, and satisfied with the life that I've created for myself. I'm very thankful for the risks that I took and the opportunity.
opportunities that I found through all of those risks and the new people that I've met along the way. So the amount of friendships and the amount of people, just you can't, a real only currency is our relationships. And so I feel very rich in that currency. Thank you all so much for spending some time with me here. Thank you, Haley Gold, for...
sharing the joy of her music with us. And don't forget, you can find out more about her at Haley Gold. For those of you who are new to the podcast, like, review. Subscribe.
