Behind The Scenes of F1

Our next guest tonight is the Oscar-nominated actress from Rome, Better Call Saul and the Banshees of Ennis Sheeran. She now co-stars in F1, the movie. What's the difference between Joshua Pierce and Sonny Hayes? A lot of decades. Hard-won experience. Of living in a van. Says the guy still lives with his mom. Says the guy with two pair. Says the guy with trips. Says the guy with the full house. Wait, I don't even live with my mom. Okay.

She just cooks for me sometimes. Mm-hmm. If you had any constructive criticism for each other, what would it be? Don't be such an Aussie kid. That was constructive. Please welcome to The Late Show, Carrie Condon. So nice to meet you. When I saw you in advance and finish year and I had to go like, who?

was that? I had to find out who that actress was. You're so fantastic. Thanks very much. And you're great in this too. Thank you. You know, we just saw the clip of you in the new movie, F1 The Movie. Yes. Not to be confused with F1 The F1. Yes.

You had a big, glitzy premiere. Was it just last night? It was last night. Yeah, here in Times Square. I know. You, like, shut down Times Square. Yeah, well, two blocks. That's a lot. Yeah, I know. I heard it was four blocks. Don't sort yourself short. Here you go. And here you are with a bunch of... behind you right there. Yeah, they got them in Times Square. That's amazing. That's extraordinary.

How was the evening? Was it fun? It was great, yeah. I wondered who brought the cars into Times Square, though. I was like, how did they get them there? Brad, probably. Maybe, yeah. Brad drove them all. Yeah, it was good, yeah. It was great to hear it with an audience, yeah. People cheered. places and stuff. It was fun. You know what's interesting is that your character is Irish. Yeah, thank God. But she's less Irish than you are.

Because you have a stronger Irish accent in person than your character has in the film. Did you have did you have to they say could you dial it back a little bit did anyone ask you to do that? No, I think I just so many other things on my mind like props and all I was like so glad I didn't have to think about an accent. Oh, I've been to both

You sound beautiful both here and in the film. I'm not trying to say one better than the other. I know, your friend. I think I sound a bit hoarse now, actually. A little bit, a little bit. You've been doing too much of this? It sounds like I've been smoking Marlboros for the whole week, but I haven't, no. Well, can you tell people a little bit about the movie and who you play in it? OK. So the film is about

This team in Formula One that are crap, like they're losing really badly. Javier Bardem. Exactly. I'm sorry. No, you're grand. I love Javier Bardem too. So Javier Bardem owns our team. He used to be a racer and he goes to meet this Yank played by...

Brad Pitt, who was a friend of his from years ago, and brings him back to England to help our team out. Like, we're kind of bringing him out of retirement. He's not really retired, but... Sure. Bring him back to F1, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. After, like, 30 years of not racing F1.

Yes, exactly, yeah. Pretty extraordinary. And he's been racing all around the world and everything. Yeah, he's been doing other races and stuff, so he's not that rusty. And who do you play? And I play the team technical director who's basically like, if you don't know anything about F1,

and I'm just basically in charge of the car. Like, I ain't got to do with the car. You're the main female character in a cast full of all these super macho guys, but you're the smart one who actually knows how everything works. Yes. That's a gift for you. That's nice.

That was nice, yeah. You get to tell them what to do a little bit. I was nurturing as well, too, to them. A little bit. You play a little bit of poker, too. Yes, and I did that. I was kind of pissed off because the way they filmed it, like, you couldn't see that it actually was me. doing that, you know, that shuffle. Yeah, yeah. I practiced it for ages. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You also, you know, you're, not to give anything too much away, but you and Brad have a little love interest.

there in the film. That's okay. We can say there's a bitter romance in the movie. There's a bitter romance in the movie. I don't know if that's a big surprise or anything like that. There's no surprise that people... Yeah, I know it to me. You know, and... Was that part of the draw in any way? I mean, it was pleasant, I imagine. I mean, just, just, I mean, it's acting. I realize you're acting, but there's some full contact snuggles.

They scheduled it for half eight on a Thursday morning. 8.30 on a Thursday morning? Yeah, I was like, oh, come on. Yeah. Wow. Wow. So, yeah, I had a vodka orange juice for my breakfast that morning. There you go. And you rough them up a little bit, too. Well, you know, we were supposed to be in Vegas and we're supposed to be, you know, out. on a nice out or whatever. Anyways, you're giving it all away.

Early Career And Shakespeare

We're moving tickets right now. Okay, good, good, okay, good. You've been working since you were a teenager. Remember, I just found out that here you are. You are the youngest actress to ever play Ophelia in a royal Shakespeare company. Production here you are at night Who's your helmet there? That was Sam West. Oh, Sam West, right. Do you know what's cast? My hair is all short because I was doing Martin McDonagh's Lieutenant Divinishmore in repertoire, so I was doing them both at the same time.

And you had to have short hair for that? I had to shave my head off, yeah. Wow. Well, not my whole head. Oh, yes, yes. How did you like shaving my head once? How did you like it? You know, actually, it was kind of liberating. Yeah. But it's a lot of maintenance because it grows really quickly. Oh, yeah.

But it cuts down on the shampooing. Yeah, it does actually. Yeah, it's just rub and go. Yeah. Yeah, you can just use a bar of soap up there. Bit of wax. At 19, there with the Royal Shakespeare Company playing Ophelia. Were you terrified or were you too young to know to be terrified? Yeah, I think I was too young. Kind of ignorance is bliss a little bit. And also I was too busy. Like I was doing the two plays at...

the same time. So sometimes it was like two Hamlets in one day or Martin's playing that. So I just was too busy. You ever mix up the two? No, of course, no, no. But it was fun to do Shakespeare and it was fun to listen to it because I'd die like an hour and a half before the end. Oh, that's right. Float around in a creek or a pond with flowers in your hair. Strangely.

enough I used to go up to the changing room and have a shower for like an hour because I was so like oh come on like I would take ages for the show the play to end wow but looking back it was weird because I drowned you know I didn't really think about it right yeah Do you think, just curious, and we're just even having to make it to air. We can cut this out if you don't want this to be public. Oh, God. Do you think Ophelia did the wrong thing of letting her father listen?

behind, like, the curtain while she's talking to Hamlet. You know, the sort of... Yes. Is she doing the wrong thing there? When she gave him the gift or whatever. Yeah, giving the letters back and everything like that. Is she doing the wrong thing there? Ah, sure. She was only a young one. So how could she be doing anything wrong? Because she lied to her boyfriend. He said...
