We review the latest in the sporting world...which was a lot of fun for Steve.

Transcript

welcome to the Kindness Chronicles, where we hope to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota Nice that it desperately needs. Twins win! Twins win! That's great. That's some fun. We just watched the... The World Series? Yeah, so, Steve walks in and he says, So does this mean we're going to the World Series? Oh boy. And he was dead serious. So we're gonna have some fun at your expense today. That's okay. My friends know. Uh, yes. Yes, they do.

I didn't think it was the World Series, but I'm like, Why is everyone so excited? Who cares? Well, we haven't won a playoff game since 2004. Some of our players were in diapers the last time the Twins won a playoff game. So, it's kind of a big deal. Yeah. And I was hoping that, uh, I wouldn't be in diapers the next time we went on. Oh, that's good. So there is that. So, uh, what would you like to talk about today, Steve? Well, I... Here's what I'm thinking, John. We're kind of an in between...

Princesses? Yeah, we're kind of in an in between time right now. It's not... Yeah, we're, we're passed back to school time. You know, fall is majorly kicked in. It's not really, it's really hot out. It is actually. It's been, but it's going to be chilly or something. This is, this is what I, I think we should have like kind of a coffee talk, kind of a coffee tour. It's pre, you know, it's pre Halloween time. This is just pumpkin spice. Kindness. I love it.

You gotta have pumpkin spice this time of year. It's just, it's in the air. So there's all kinds of stuff going on. You have some interesting things we can bring up. There's many, many things happening right now. Aside from the twins almost winning the World Series today. So There are some sport things that we have to talk about because I know it's going to be difficult for, but you can participate as much as you want. I can sense the sheer excitement from you guys.

I just, I just, I warm myself with your exuberance into sports. And our objective today, Steve, is to find the kindness in each of these topics. That's what I know, little morsels of... Um, interesting things that come through all this amazing winning and losing and emotion. I would like to start with the Minnesota Twins victory today. Yeah. KG, your thoughts. Yes sir. Um, you know what? It was exactly how you hoped it would go. Right?

I mean, Royce Lewis was a question mark coming into the postseason. As recent as yesterday, his hamstring might have landed him off of the postseason roster for this three game set. Uh, I love that the twins rolled the dice, put him on there, put him in at the DH. He responds with two home runs in his first two at bat, unbelievable, he's a superstar in the making. And then you need your ace to be, uh, who Pablo Lopez was today.

You gave up a great hitter, uh, maybe the best hitter in baseball and Louisa Rice to get this guy, but this is why you brought him in. Days like today, he was awesome. Bullpen did their job. It lined up perfectly. There were some scary moments, which there always are. And there was a Griffin Jack sighting, those Griffin Jack sightings. My God, I just, the guy, I got most nervous when they had a couple of runners on base and had that long fly ball, the Louie Farland shot. Yes. Oh, that scared me.

That did scare me. But you know, John, you can speak. To a couple of Minnesota guys that your son used to play with and against. We've talked about that ad nauseum. Yes. It's so cool though. I think it's amazing. So my, my son, Jack played against Louie Varland. Uh, beat him one to nothing. And then, uh, and their careers have gone different directions. Um, and then, uh, played against, uh, Walner. So there are three Walner boys at, uh, Forest Lake and they're all studs.

And, uh, yeah, this is the oldest and he's pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good. It's very cool. They both played today. Uh, it's, it's very exciting. So here's my kindness moment from the game today. Yeah, let's find one. So the kindness moment from the game today is, did you watch the, uh, the Royce Lewis interview after the game? I did. So, there's a guy who knows how to connect with a crowd. He gets it. Twice, he totally agrees.

He acknowledged the crowd as, you know, sort of the impetus behind the win, and, you know, just the energy. My son, you know, Jack was there, playing hooky from work. Um, but, yeah, I was, uh, I wish I could have been there. So, you find... God, it would have been fun. So, you're saying, in the interview... Graciousness, yes. And his interview, he basically, uh... Did it, did it seem authentic? Oh, absolutely. He didn't want to talk about what he did.

He wanted to talk about his teammates and the crowd and what it meant to them. He referenced how long Minnesota Fans have waited for this and how it meant a little bit more today because of that streak and the place was going crazy. And it's just fun to see. Right. I mean, you know, we call Minnesota loser bill USA, sometimes kind of tongue in cheek, everybody does, everybody does on social media because we haven't won a championship in the four major sports since the nineties.

And so it's been 32 years, right? So people take their shots. But bottom line is, um, you have to celebrate what you do have. And this year's team won a division. They have a chance to win a playoff series. Are they the, the Bronx Bombers of the 40s and 50s with Joe DiMaggio and all those Yankees? Probably not. But they're a damn fun team to watch and they got a great win today and we should celebrate it. And that's what we're going to do. We're going to celebrate it.

And, uh, when you say they haven't won since the 90s, that would be... The very early nineties. Ninety one. Ninety one. Was the last time. Incredible. I also, um, I also appreciated the fact that Alex Rodriguez seemed to do his homework about Minnesota baseball and acknowledged Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhier and seemed to, uh, Yeah, I thought he was really good today.

Maybe he spent some time here now and got to feel the pain of our fans and have conversations at those Wolves games with some of our sports fans because he did seem to understand him. And I love that they flashback the last time the twins won a postseason game, which was a Yankee series, uh, in 2004 and the twins won game one and Rodriguez had a big hit in game two to allow the Yankees to rally in that game and then eventually win three straight to win that series.

But he had a great frame of reference to knowing. Uh, the pain we've been through and what it means to this community to have the Twins win a game like they did today, so I thought he was excellent. And how about when, uh, he referenced the fact that Gossman must have been tipping his pitches? Yeah. Like, they had to have known that he must do something, because when he throws this pitch called a splitter, which looks like a fastball and then it just falls out of the zone.

Yeah. The guys weren't even, like, flinching. It was crazy. And then the next guy gets in there and he starts throwing the exact same splitter. Not even as good of a splitter. And the guys are swinging right over it. I mean, it was, they, the guy does something and they picked it up. So very interesting. Next topic, KG. So this is baseball post season. Can you give us just a couple minutes of, uh, Mrs. Schweitz is calling. Hold on for one second.

You're listening to Kindness Chronicle sports channel, Mrs. Schweitz. Mrs. Schwartz? Hey, we're on the Kindness Chronicles right now. Can I call you back? Goodbye. Goodbye. And then I hung up on KG. Oh no. So here we go. This is, this is great. This is good programming right here. You chose the wrong button. Yeah, I, I chose the wrong button. That was Becky calling to announce that the twins win. Oh, really? No, they won. That was for me. That was for Steve to make Steve feel. Thanks Becky.

All right. So, uh, preseason for the wild. What do you see? Well, you know, I've seen, uh, very little of our go to guys. So, uh, later this week, there's two more preseason games and I think they're going to play a lot of the, the big gunners, the Capri soft, the boldies, what I have seen though. I've liked because, you know, it's the first time I've done this. Now this is your number 18 on the beat for me. And for the first time in my tenure, uh, covering this team, they have.

A ton of young talent. That's maybe a couple years away. And I think training camp has shown that they've got, you know, I think I was going to have a really good minor league product, but throughout, um, where all their draft picks the last couple of years are going and some will go to major junior hockey up in Canada. Others are playing college hockey right now. They finally have a full coverage on.

And so, you know, I know that fans are still frustrated about the playoff exit again in the first round last year. And I know they're still mad about it. The Parisian suitor contracts, which still have this year and next to be, um, to be finished, but, uh, the future looks great and, uh, this training camp has shown me that they have a ton of young town. I'm most excited about a guy named Jesper Wallstead. Who's a 20 year old kid. Uh, we got him in the first round a couple of years ago.

He had a really good year in Iowa last year. He's the goalie of the future and Gus is awesome, but this kid has the chance to be one of those special, special goalies and Jesper, Jesper, Jesper Walford, like most of our roster. He's from Sweden and so really fun to see him compete. He got a full game on the road at Colorado, beat the avalanche, made 40 saves. Um, he's a big kid, man. He's like. He just looks imposing. Uh, he's just big, tall, you know, six foot five kid.

He's athletic as, as, you know, as could be. And yeah, really exciting to watch him and have a couple conversations with him. And, you know, I think we forget sometimes, especially, um, in hockey when these, when these youngsters come over from another country and they've never been here before.

Um, last year he struggled like the first couple of months of the year, last year in Iowa, we're all going, Oh, um, but you forget, like he talked about it today, like how much more comfortable is this year. Um, he had never been, um, to America, never lived here obviously. And, you know, he's just last year, a 19 year old kid, right. That first time out of the country.

And I think we just assume because they're pro athletes that there's a button they can push where it's all just going to come together. It doesn't work that way. And so I think he's a different guy now and I think he's just showing that he's got a ton of potential. So here's a real quick question. This is for the listeners. See how sharp they are. With a name like Jesper, does he flip the bill of his cap up? Are you tracking with me KG? And is his nanny. Yes, Tiger Woods ex wife.

KG, KG, if you could look at the, look at Steve's face right now, he has no clue whatsoever. That is a Jesper Parnevik. Have you ever heard of Jesper Parnevik? Oh my god. No, there's no chance. How about Abba? Yes, of course. Okay, well they're both from, aren't they from Sweden? I think they're Sweden, yeah. I think so. Okay, there you go. So, you know, we could talk about Dancing Queen. Would that be okay? Fine. You'd probably appreciate it. Be nice.

Hey, here's something that you might, Taylor Swift has finally put the NFL on the map. Wow. The stories are crazy. You know who Taylor Swift is, right? Easy now. Are you a Swifty? Um, I'm not really a Swifty. Um, but I can appreciate her. She's done great stuff. She's done okay. Yeah. Yeah. No, I mean, she's like, she writes a lot of songs. She has talent. Yeah. She's prolific and she's... solid.

My guess if she wants to come to the game against the Vikings, the Chiefs against the Vikings this week, she can probably figure, cobble together a few bucks to get here. Yeah, so many stories. What, Kevin, what were you gonna say about it, like about his statement? Well, I think, I mean, the NFL is all good, right? I mean, the numbers this year, like every year, are through the roof.

But, to, to Swiety's point, Um, the highest rated game this year in the national football league was, uh, the most recent game that Taylor Swift attended, uh, over the weekend. Um, you know, it's, it's amazing. Uh, the new eyeballs that are coming to the NFL football. Now, do I think the Swifties are going to be NFL fans? But I've got a daughter, like all three of my daughters love Taylor Swift. We took them to a concert 10, 11 years ago, and I'm not a big.

I mean, I think her music's fine, but I'm not, I'm not, I wouldn't have gone on my own, right? We took her to the concert, and it was amazing, and she's, she's an incredible performer. I, I reckon her to what I saw in the 80s and 90s from Madonna, where when you go to a concert, it's as much about the theatrical performance as it is the music, and it's really spectacular to watch.

So. That being said, my daughter Maddie, doesn't ever watch football and now she wants to know where to get a Travis, Kel jersey. So they're 400% from hundred percent. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And he was selling a lot of, yeah, he was selling a lot of jerseys to start out with, I dare you guys to turn the TV on, on to any channel that has sports at any point. And watch for five minutes without seeing Travis Kelsey or Patrick Mahomes in a commercial. And this was before Taylor Swift.

Like, both guys are charismatic. Both guys are superstars. Best at their position in the league. And both guys are unafraid to get out there and, and, and show some product. And so you, you really can't do it. You can't watch five minutes of commercials. Without seeing both of them and then they're great like they're they're really good at what they do.

Well, um, so good for them yeah, and what's what what they're saying and all the news stories about just how The the Swift effect is that they're calling it when she comes into a city Oh, it's billions of dollars comes with her Like everyone can everyone's paying in money to be around her in some way You know that that is what's amazing about her and you know I saw somebody posted a thing about her and was like, you know She's a pretty good influence for young girls, you know, she's she writes

songs from the heart. She's authentic. Yeah to our stuff She's she's you know bonuses out her people. She has successful tours people enjoy her She seems to be she's a celebrity and she's just dealing with the best she can with it, you know Obviously, I don't know her, um, You don't? No, but I mean, I don't know what she's really like, necessarily. I have stood next to her, by the way. Have you really? She's super tall. Where did you stand next to her?

Target had her play many times, or a few times, I should say. As a part of the executive, helping the executives move around, I was standing next to her and the guy from Coldplay. They're both very tall people. Yeah, that's cool. She's tall. She had the heels on, but yeah, and you didn't have your heels on that. Not that day. Not that day. I had my waterline. Anyway, um, I think she's, there's a little kindness thought in there. But here's another kindness thought.

KG, you said that, uh, she takes care of the people that work for her. How about the bonuses that all of her truck drivers got? Forever. A hundred grand, guys. A hundred grand. Boom. Yeah. And they get paid, they get paid really well, you know, on, on their own, right? They're, they're, um, you know, they're in a pretty good spot already with, uh, being a part of that crew and being a part of that tour. But now on top of that, to get a six figure cash, uh, tip for the hard work.

Yeah. She's a likable human. Yeah. Let's just say she won't have trouble when it comes time to find truck drivers next time. And production, production people. She will have people forever that will be loyal to her. And, you know, she pays them great for what they did. And they, this tour was amazing, successful. So... And I'm guessing if, if the Travis Kelsey thing doesn't work out, she won't have a lot of trouble finding a date. Ah, no. No, she will not.

I just, I got a feeling that, Depends on what song she writes about him after. That's true. You don't want to get nose cross hairs. Alright. Oh. Okay, let's switch gears. Yeah, yeah. Speaking of musicians, I just thought this was interesting. I was at a function. We're coming out of that. I was at a function. We're going to go back to sports in just a second. But this is for you.

Yeah. I was at a, uh, a function the other day for the, uh, the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain and, um, was talking to a woman who's the fundraising person for the Masonic Children's Hospital and she was talking about how generous Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam has been to their hospital. Yeah. Which is crazy to think, you know, here's this guy, comes to Minnesota.

wants to visit this children's hospital and uh, learns about this this ailment called epidermolysis bullosa which is this this ailment where your skin doesn't like the, the, the layers of skin don't fuse together. Yeah. And like when the baby comes out like it tears off its skin and it's just the most awful. He talked about it at the concert so I, I went and saw him. Oh, he talked about it? Okay. Yeah, I went and saw him.

He called out Joe Mowery, he called out U of M, he called out Jacob Tolar, the, the dean of the medical school, I think he had up on stage. Yes, yes, and he, so he called out people, and he talked about that condition, and uh, you know, they're in town from, from I think Thursday to Sunday. We went to the Sunday show, my wife went to one of the, both shows.

Um, so they spent, they spent the weekend here, and at the, They tailored their tours around that, but that band forever has had a lot of integrity about what they do. They, they realize all the trappings of, you know, from 80s rock star in 70s and 80s, that, that kind of opulence of rock stars is kind of was already kind of spent and they were.

looking for something more and that they've had longevity from it because especially because of their character and their fan base really is really committed. My wife's been a a fan of the band forever so she's part of the early on crowd so it's a whole culture there it does not surprise me. What is your favorite Pearl Jam tune? Um, I like a song called Wish List. Of course it's a deep cut. Not really it's, or Given to Fly is a really great song. It's on older albums but... How about you, KG?

Are you a Pearl Jam guy at all? I respect them. They're not on my favorite band list, no. Why, what do you have? Uh, the song Black. I love the song Black. Oh, grunge. Where'd you go? Grunge. I love it. Yeah. Okay. So. That's when that song came out. That's right. That's right. Wow. So, enough about this music stuff. I hope that you enjoyed that. Back to sports. Back to the Ryder Cup. Sports talk. Oh, the Ryder Cup. Here we go. We're going to talk the Ryder Cup.

Do you know what the Ryder Cup is? I do, I do. I know what it is. Which sport? What's going on with it? Which sport? Come on. It's a... What's that sport? You walk around with sticks? Stick and a ball. Yeah. Outside carts. Carts, yeah. Yes. No, what about the Ryder Cup? What's going on with it? I don't know. That's the thing. I don't know anything about it. So there was some... I love the Ryder Cup. Yeah. It's, to me, it's the most enjoyable golf to watch.

And I especially love when they play in Europe because you can get up in the morning, you know, 5 o'clock in the morning, and you're watching golf. It's already going. And it's going. Yeah. It's awesome. I always like to frankly see the home team win. the Europeans, this is such a big deal for them. And some of the characters that are on that, that are on the European team are just such likable characters. Rory McIlroy, Victor Hovland, John Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick. It's just a good...

Seems like a really good group of guys. Shane Lowry looks like he might have a little fun from time to time. Oh, does he ever. Yeah, he'll knock down a couple of Guinness here and there. You know, it's back to back editions of the Ryder Cup where the best players in the world at that particular sport have been brought to tears. A couple years ago it was Rory McIlroy after some disappointment. Um, over here in the States.

And then this year it was Scotty Sheffler from the Saturday match, uh, was brought to tears. I mean, there's a lot of emotion. What I love about it is there's no money. These guys aren't making a nickel. They're over there playing for their, their country, for their teammates, for their captain. And there's a history there. Like, you know, it's, it's remarkable how much it means to these guys. It has a different feeling.

We were lucky enough to have tickets the last time it was, um, in the area here at Hazeltine back in. 2016 and being out there. It's not like any of like, normally you go to a golf tournament and you get the little quiet clap and you're, you're trying to behave and just walk to the next hole. It's like a college football game. Like there's chanting going on, massive, massive setups. It's crazy. It's great. It is, but there's still respect. I mean, they're still very respectful.

Like when a guy's, you know, over a ball, there's nobody, you know, yelping at him or anything. You miss it. Wow. There's a lot of heckling after that ball gets hit. And I thought one of the, one of the cool moments at Hazeltine back, going, paging back to 2016, was the day before the Ryder Cup started. Um, they were, the final practice round, and Rory McIlroy was out there with a huge gallery. And... Uh, we got up and knocked it to 10 feet and missed the putt.

And one of the U. S. fans, you know, in that big crowd on the practice round day was heckler. Oh yes. I love that. Brutal. Brutal Buddy. So he says, I suppose you could do it better. I got a hundred bucks. So the guy comes out there, he's wearing his khaki shorts and his golf shirt. He's just a rube with flip flops on, grabs Rory's putter, takes out his hundred dollars and knocks the putt in and the place goes bananas. It was quite a moment. And McIlroy went bananas. I mean it was so cool.

He was hugging the guy. It was really a fun, fun, like, organic moment that just kind of popped up on a nondescript practice round day over at Hazeltine. It was phenomenal. And they're coming back to Hazeltine, I think, uh, 2029, that edition. Uh, we got a little ways to go, so, six years, but still, it's gonna be, uh, it's gonna be pretty cool to have that back here in the Twin Cities.

And I know that, uh, Chrissy and Becky have already put in for, uh, the, uh, the, when they go back to Ireland, so KG, four years from now, we might be going to Ireland, if, uh... I was told that was a possibility, I hope it works out, um, yeah, it would be... Be fun to see. It would be indeed. So, there was however, what might be described as a don't be that guy moment that took place In Ryder Cup? During the Ryder Cup this year. Yeah, there was. Tell us all about it.

KG, why don't you describe it as the sportscaster that you are. You can probably paint it better than we could. Well, it's clearly better than Steve could. For people like Steve that maybe aren't as hardcore to the Ryder Cup as John and I, um, every day the team together wears synchronized outfits on the golf course. It's usually very patriotic for their team and for Team Europe. And, you know, for Team Europe, it's royal blue and gold. For U. S., it's red, white, and blue.

Well, on one of the particular days, I believe it was the second day of the competition, Saturday, Patrick Cantlie didn't have his hat on. And the European fans made a really big deal that he was the only guy that wasn't wearing the matching cap to the other guys. And Can't Wait, to their point, if you watch him on the tour, always wears a hat. And I mean always.

And there was some rumors on social media that he was, as they were leading into this competition, raising a bit of a stink about the fact that they weren't getting paid. So that was already in the press over there, um, around Rome and around, uh, the, the coverage on social media for this event. So at every single teabox and every green. The Europeans would take their hats off and shake their hats when Cantlay was getting ready to play.

So, Paige to the end of the round, and he's been taking the heat for four and a half, five hours from these fans. And it gets to the final green, and Cantlay drains a 43 foot putt to pretty much dagger this particular match that included Rory McIlroy. So, Cantlay does the mythical hat on, he's not wearing a hat, but he pretends to. All the us guys take off their hats and taunt the crowd, but it, where it went over the top is one of the caddies got in Rory's face.

Now Rory still hasn't put, he hadn't finished the hole yet, so he could still tie Cantley's. Um, big make on that birdie putt. And he kind of did the hat thing in front of Rory, so that was bad enough. It spilled over to the parking lot and they nearly came to blows. So what in golf? Yeah. Oh, it was that's serious. I didn't know. I thought, I thought it was a funny little moment, but that was like, Oh no, no, no. Yeah. Rory Rory was clearly a feisty lad. He was not happy.

He wasn't happy, but the caddy really wasn't in his line or really even in his line of sight. It was still bad form. All that being said, you don't do that. You don't do it. If you're a caddy, that is taboo. And that's the don't be that guy moment for me. He kind of instigated it? He did. He's a long time caddy and he knows better. Yeah. The emotion that gets involved in this thing is it is not your typical golf event, you know, and golf is such a singular thing.

You're out there every week trying to do it all by yourself. And this is the one time when it's not about you, it's about, you know, the group, the team. And so it is, it's a fascinating event to watch because it's so different. Anything else, there's no money. And it's a team game where every other time they play, it's all about money and they're all by themselves. So yeah, there's a lot of emotion that gets involved. So John, you maybe, 'cause you're in the room when golfers fight.

Is it like a, it's like a slap fight? No, but is it like a hockey fight? Do you pull your golf, uh, golf shirt over the guy? Yeah, absolutely. Just like a hockey fight? Actually, what they do is they take off their glove delicately, and then they slap each other with the gloves. Actually, you know, the thing is, Steve, is it's not very kind. But caddies... Really kind of just need to know their place, sort of like you when we talk about sports. Wow! Second class! Second class!

No, that's not fair. I do like, you know, like, Jordan Spieth. I'm gonna make some kindness out of this. Got it. Jordan Spieth, whenever he wins, he talks about... Us and our team and my team and our, you know, any, he really considers his caddy to be as much a part of the team as he is. So that's a, that, that's very, you know, it's, it's neat. It is.

And I think Jordan has a different perspective because there's a lot been made out of the relationship he has, um, with his younger sister, who has special needs and how she's been such a big part of that journey. I think Jordan had to grow up a little earlier than most. Um, to kind of handle, um, you know, cause she was with him when he kind of became a superstar. Her and Jordan's family were out there with, you know, Jordan traveling around years ago.

Jordan Spieth has a, uh, younger sister who is special needs. Oh, yes, yes, absolutely. Yeah, it's a big part of his journey. And, and I think when he was first becoming a superstar and dealing with all that media attention, Um, I thought he handled it really well. I thought he didn't make a circus out of it. Um, he showed a ton of respect to his sister and the family. And they didn't make it into a gong show. They made it, it was classy the way it was handled.

Very young kid that, you know, was given a lot of responsibility and media attention and money at a young age. I think that helped keep him real grounded. Uh, the fact that he basically helped raise her and I guess their best friends and that whole thing. I think it's pretty neat story going back to the kindness side of things. You know, you see one side of these athletes when they're competing, there's a whole nother side, uh, when they're done, they go back home.

And so it's pretty cool to see how that kind of evolved over the years. And we got to know his sister a little bit. And one of Jordan's best friends is Justin Thomas. Yes. Now, Justin Thomas isn't quite as gracious as Jordan Spieth is. He's feisty. He's a little feisty. Did you see him when he was tipping the pretend cap to the crowd? Oh, he was taunting. He was taunting. Every time he won a hole, he would tip his pretend cap to the, to the crowd. It was really funny.

That goes back to the cap situation. The cap guy. Yeah. Everyone's all about it. The cap thing was a big deal. It was a big deal, for sure. And what's funny is, Patrick Cantlie, I cannot imagine that he would have been concerned about money. He won the FedEx thing 2 or 3 years ago, and won like 15 million dollars. I mean, the guy's gotta have more money than he could ever know what to do with. Yeah, in my opinion. Yeah. And I'm not a big Patrick Canlay guy.

He's about as exciting as a file cabinet. Um, he's a terrifically talented guy, but he's one of the slowest players on the planet.
