Welcome to the Jody Mayberry show, where we explore the nature of business. I've been hard at work on my upcoming podcast, Magic Course. I'm just loving creating this and I think you'll love it too. The book I've been working on, well, it's paused for a short time so I can get this course out. Now, I haven't done an interview episode in a while, but. But I really enjoy doing those three question
episodes. If you're not familiar with that, when I have a guest on the show, the very next episode, they ask me three questions. Since I haven't done an interview episode. While I was recording with Mike Simmons
¶ Mike Simmons, Co-host of Catalyst Sale Podcast
for the Catalyst Sale podcast, Mike agreed to come on and ask me three questions for this show. Now, these questions are unsolicited, unguided, unscripted. I didn't lead him towards asking anything. This is whatever was on Mike Simmons mind. Before we get to the questions, maybe you're wondering, who is Mike Simmons? Well, Mike Simmons is the co founder of Catalyst Sale, which is a sales training company. And we do the show the Catalyst Sale podcast together. Now let's get to Mike Simmons.
¶ Question 1: Who is your favorite Marvel character and why?
First question, who is your favorite Marvel character and why? And don't take a cop out here and say, I'm not a big Marvel fan. Come up with a favorite Marvel character and let us know why. The Punisher. And why. Okay, so the Punisher, from what I know. Look, if you're really into Marvel characters, maybe I'm way off base. I'm given the answer based on what I know about Marvel characters, in particular about the Punisher.
But from what I see, the Punisher is just a guy with some unusual talent trying to deal with some pain and a problem the best he can. I kind of like that he's just a guy. It's not some superpower. It's nothing real crazy. It's just a guy. And I get that this part is odd. I know. I thought about not saying this, but you and I are friends, so I can tell you. But there's part of me that feels, yeah, that could be me. I could do that. And really, isn't that
what we're after? Don't we want to connect in ways like that? When we see a story, we want to feel that in that. So being a park ranger, having been trained in defensive tactics and trained in firearms and whatnot, I see that and I say, yeah, well, sure, that could be me. Makes me like it a little more. And the first movie, I loved that movie. And John Travolta was a brilliant bad guy. The second movie, punisher movie, if you saw that, it was terrible. I didn't make it
very far before I stopped. And the series on Netflix has been good, too. Now let's move on to Mike Simmons. Second question. What do you have? Mike, when you think
¶ Question 2: What themes have carried through your personal and professional journey?
of each of your experiences, whether this is in the finance space, whether it's in as a park ranger, whether it's raising, raising a family, playing hockey, going back to this trip that you made across country, what are some of the key themes that have carried with you throughout that overall journey? And if you could summarize that in. Three themes, the key themes that carried with me throughout the overall
journey, we'll narrow it down to three. Okay. Without being able to put much thought into it, I would say the first one is people love a story. People love to hear a story. They love to tell a story. They love to be a part of a story. So if you keep that in mind when you talk to people, it's going to go a lot better. They either want to hear your great story. Now, don't just talk about yourself. Tell a good story. People will want to hear it. People love
to tell a story. So ask a lot of questions, be curious. Let people tell their story. Maybe they don't always get the chance to. And people love to be a part of a story. So if you're creating something fun, something unique, something bigger than yourself, people will want to be a part of that. Theme number two, I would say that people want to be noticed. Nobody gets the appreciation, recognition, and encouragement they deserve. Or at least they don't feel
like they do. And it's probably true, they don't. Some people actually get none. So that's a theme. I've seen quite a bit, especially in the workplace, maybe not so much in travel. Although even when I travel, if you ask people stories or ask them questions, it'll pull out stories. And I do this. Well, just not long ago, my wife and I went out to dinner and the waitress had a very unique necklace on. And rather than just let that go, I always call those things out, hey,
I like your necklace. Well, guess what? Not enough people notice people. Not enough people feel like they get recognition. And that even though it's about a necklace, was recognition which led to the story behind the necklace, where it came from, where she got it, why she got that particular necklace, all from saying, hey, I like your necklace. Which wraps into the theme. People want to get noticed, even if it's for their necklace. And the third theme, you can stand
above everyone else by one inch. This has come up a lot on the show and it all comes from Jeff Knowles one extra inch theory. Most people do only what is required and some people do what is less than required. And all it takes to stand out is one inch. You just have to be one inch taller than everyone else and you're taller. You just have to go one inch further than everyone else and you've gone further. So there's the third one. You can stand
above everyone else by one inch. So to wrap those into one, the three theories that I've seen played out through my whole life and all my experience. People love a story, people want to get noticed, and you can stand above everyone else by one inch. And let's move on to question number three. What do you have, Mike,
¶ Question 3: What does "Do your best and forgive yourself" mean to you?
when you. Hear this quote which comes from Admiral Payne, who we both know, people who are part of that family tree, do your best and forgive yourself. What does that mean to you? All right, he mentioned Admiral Payne. So let me tell you who Admiral Payne is, in case you don't know. Admiral Payne is Priscilla Cockrell's father. So that makes him Lee Cockrell's father in law and Dan Cockrell's
grandfather. And I never met Admiral Payne, but I have heard a lot about him because he is a legend in the Cockrell family. He left a big impact and Lee and Dan have talked about him very much. In particular that quote, do your best and forgive yourself. So what does it mean to me? Well, I didn't know Admiral Payne. I didn't grow up a cockerel. So the meaning really has just come out of what I believe it means to me, which might be different than what it means to people
that grew up with it. I don't know. But this is what it means to me. And I think there are two distinct parts to this. They go together, but you also have to break them apart. First, do something, take action, give it the best you have at the moment. And the second part, after you've taken action, accept how it turns out. Yes, I
¶ Admiral Payne's legacy and how the quote guides his mindset
probably could have done better with more information. I probably could have done better with more time, could have done better with more connections, an advantage, whatever. Yes, I probably could have done better, but I did the best with what I had. I did the best with what was available at the time. So all I can do is forgive myself for not doing better now. Tomorrow, do my best. You have to forgive yourself today to do your best tomorrow. At least that's what I have
