¶ Introduction: The Feeling of Being Broke
Feeling broke. This is commentary from James Brown.
¶ The Reality of American Financial Struggles
Nearly 50% of Americans feel broke. That's according to a new survey from Market Watch.
¶ Complex Causes of Financial Insecurity
It's not just about having low wages, either. The reasons behind this are more complex, rising inflation, record household debt and the gap between average salaries and a cost of living. They're all taking their toll.
¶ Living Paycheck to Paycheck
Nearly two thirds of people, 66%, say they're living paycheck to paycheck. What really stands out is the disconnect between what people earn and what they feel they need to be financially secure.
¶ The Income-Security Gap
While the average salary is around $61,000, Americans believe they need to make about 73,000 to feel stable. On top of that, most say they need about $17,000 in savings just to feel secure, though the average family only has about eight grand saved. Here's the thing.
¶ Generational and Gender Disparities
Financial insecurity is high among all generations. Women in particular are feeling the strain more than men, 55% of women report feeling broke, compared to 41.1% of Mendez. And younger generations are struggling, too. For many, the weight of student loans, rent, rising costs, feels impossible to manage. But is there a way out?
¶ Strategies for Financial Stability
Experts say yes, though it's not easy setting a budget, avoiding debt traps like overusing credit cards, focusing on saving can all help, as can building a financial cushion, even if it's small at first. But this is all easier said than done. I can't blame you if you can't pull it off.
