It's really fun when I run into someone that I haven't seen in decades and get to catch up and hear about all the great things. I ran into my next guest, Molly Sims at a New Year's Eve party a couple of years ago, and now, um, she asked me to be on her podcast, and I asked her to be online. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the one and only Molly Sims. This is the first for me. I was just on Molly's podcast and now
she's on mine. And I know that Molly is very similar to me, where she's probably got ten million other things going on as do I. So I'm just getting the color back in my cheek. I smelled the Altoyd's the Peppermint, which kind of woke me up. And how how are you doing? After we just talked for an hour? I was just selling Bobby on Mike. I forgot my kids lunch and they're hot lunch, so I'm not I'm
not winning over here. Now. You're so amazing just to like talk about your career and your life, and you know, it's it's uh, it's incredible what women can do when they put their focus on their mind and and they really go for it. But it's you know, it's not easy. People think that it's really easy, and it's not. There's a reason they call this work. That does require a lot of work. It requires a lot of organization, and
it requires help. So tell me what you do to kind of get your life, which you've got three kids, a husband, and you know, a pretty out their career. So what what are tricks that you do? You know, I think it's kind of what you said on our podcast. I've been really able. I've been I've been able to pivot. I've been able to see the writing on the wall when modeling was going to end or not end, but it's probably not going to go on forever do I
even want it to? And then you know, to go into MTV House of Style and then to acting and hosting. I could always kind of see the ding on the wall. But I also felt like it was more of me wanting to you use the word curious. I'm a very curious person as well, um, and so I've been able to really take that curiosity sprinkle a little hard work and then a little bit of luck, and it's definitely it served me. But I have to say, um, hard work. Um, it's probably you know, being kind. I've gotten a lot.
You know, faith Kate's who I know, you know, Who's next model? So she started me, Um, almost thirty years ago. Well you're one of the original supermodels. So I assume that I don't remember the first time we worked together. Did you do Fashion Week? Was it on fashion show or was it it was fashion Week? It was Oh my god. I did everything. I mean, I did you know Jay Crewe to Victoria's Secrets to name and Marcuston Nordstrom to I mean the Gamut, I did the shows.
I lived in Europe for seven years. Um, but you know, I definitely think you know, having a husband, three kids, I calendar a lot. I rely on people a lot. I do not if I'm um, if I'm micromanaging you, there's a problem. I have learned to not. It's not really my strength. Um, I'm a Gemini, so you'll know when I'm upset or I'll just take it and take it and take it and take it. And then I have Sadly I can, I can blow up a little. So if I'm micro managing you, there's probably a problem.
When my kids were your age, and I was, you know, working this corporate job and traveling and doing all this, Like I found little now they call them hacks. They were little tricks. Like I realized that every weekend I was running to the store to buy birthday gifts for all the party I had to go to. And finally I said, this is really dumb. I went to a local bookstore and I bought gift certificates for five dollars, ten dollars, and I just would keep them in my
drawer and decide how much to give. So those little things made a difference. Have you been like creative that way kind of you know, getting your kids Like, yeah, I mean the first one, the first one, they don't have that many friends. They're not really in school, it's in pre school. But now there's three of them there in lower elementary. There in kindergarten. I just said, a kindergartener start and things gray and he's delicious and he on me um and then Scarlet scar is in second
grade and Brooks is in fourth grade. And I learned the birthday hack about two years ago when I was constantly like, how could it be this person's birthday? So I will buy in bulk, whether it be like a great little sweatshirt, then we'll have it monogrammed or a great little water bottle and then we can see the school list we know from last year. Those are time suckers. If you have to get a birthday gift every three days for one of your three children every week, like
there's a lot of birthdays. Um, but monogram you have to take it up a notch and monogram the kids thing I do every now. I do love a little monogram. I don't spend a lot, but I do sometimes monogram. I have a great girl here locally and she's you know, she ships all over. Her name is Rachel Miriam and she does incredible monogramming. And then my best friend Megan O'Brien, who is living in New Jersey now from the city. Um,
she left the city about six months ago. She has a company called Stitched Supply and it's become very well known. Her name's Megan and she will hand so sweatshirts and anything purses and it's just everyone gets the biggest kick out of it. Um. I do love to give a good birthday gift, but um, I think it's more about the thought. Yeah, But then you're thinking a lot. I think I didn't think enough and I just kind of had a react quickly because there was so many things
going on. But you know, but the buying in bulk, the buying and the bags, Like we bought six unicorn blanket heads that I knew at some point six girls are going to get different girls are gonna get unicorn blankets, you know what I mean. Like we ordered the bags off Etsy for three dollars that had a pink candle and a blue handle and a green handle. You know, so those little tricks. Yeah, So are you crafty? Are
you like artistic? Are you? I would not say that I am very crafty, but I do like to bake. I'm I'm a really good baker. My girl, my little one. We all like to watch baking shows. And if you guys haven't watched is it Cake? I don't know who you are. It's on Netflix and it's kind of amazing. But I know, but I think the hacks are I think the hacks are good because if you're working, you really like calendar ing. For someone like me, that's like
I live and buy and die by calendar. Um, I'll know what I'm doing way ahead of time, so I know, we bulk shoot the podcast, which a lot of people don't realize because it's it helps me, UM be more present with my guests. It helps me. Really. We have a great producer who we really kind of cone in on what they do and how they do it, and UM, we're really specific on who comes on, and we take a lot of pride and not UM, but we definitely I think organization is huge, huge, And how do you sleep?
You know, sleeping has been a little bit of an issue, but I the magnesium citrate has probably saved me the most. UM. I also take to Marry Ruth's organic sleep gummies that I think are amazing. UM has a great line of organic UM supplements and all different things. UM. Sometimes is there melotonin in it or just cbd? Um, it's just melatonin. Okay, so they're melatonin. Yeah, yeah, I like CBD better than melotonin. Melantonin. I always feel it the next day. I don't know why.
My husband says that he takes melantonin and I'm like, you have to stop taking melotonin. You you feel the effects. I don't really feel it, but he does. Everyone's different. You were in law school when you decided to model. I wasn't in law school. I wanted to go to law school. I was at Vanderbilt University, and it was like I got in. I couldn't believe it. And I never met a true crime show that I didn't like
even back then. Um, but I got the opportunity to have some pictures made in Memphis, Tennessee, and then those were sent to Faith and Joel at Next Models and I came up and then the rest is history. And did you finish college? Did you? No? No, It's funny. I was. My mother passed away a few years ago, and I was going through my stuff and I found my original Next Models like journal that I would write down how many pounds I made, or euros or Frank's
or Deutsche marks or all the different things. But I found a letter that I had facts to Vanderbilt University. Mean, like, I've got this amazing opportunity that I think I'm going to try to do. I'm I'm just gonna do one more semester. And then I found a couple of postcards that I had written, and I'm like, I think I could make maybe a little money doing this, But it
was interesting to see and go back. Yeah, I have my date original date books that I would write how much taxis were and who I shot with and what the address was. It's I'm so glad I saved my don't know what I'll do with them, but it's pretty it's pretty interesting. So I would write down everything I would. I didn't have a lot of money, um when I lived in Europe, and so I would you know, living
in London was to take a black taxi. I would take all the tubes and then I would put on my really nice hues and walk the like fifteen steps so I wouldn't mess up anything. And like I put this crazy miss sony Um dress at Joseph basically on layaway because I'm like, Okay, I really want this dress, you know, and to think about when you go back and look at all of it, it's so it's it
seems like yesterday and and then it doesn't. When you were modeling, you also have talked about, you know, weight and dealing with how you know, you have to look at yourself and I mean, look, everyone looks at you and you're absolutely stunning and beautiful and an ageless. I mean you always have been tall, blonde, beautiful, but I know, modeling kind of messes with your brain a little bit. So how was it for you? Um, in the beginning, it was terrible. I mean it was probably the hardest thing.
It was the one thing that almost made me stop. I think if it had not been for my mom and you know, my my dad having that real support, you know, growing up, I didn't. You know, my mom was beautiful double dee boobs. She was always healthy and organic. I mean when she grew up on a farm and you know, there wasn't much, you know, we didn't really
talk about dieting or anything like that. And then when I went to college, you know, you're at Vanderbilt, You're eating Wendy's frosties and you know, dipping fringe fries in them and chocolate cookie dough. And then all of a sudden, you're in New York and then Faith tells you you're not going to Grease to get your tears sheets. You're going to Germany. And that was a real I mean, that was why why Germany over Greece. You know, at the time, I can't remember. I think it was a
better market. I'm not sure why she thought that, but they were like you know what, I think you're going to do more in Germany starting to really open up.
You had at that time you had ham you had Hamburg munich Um, and then you had before there was next Internationally all over the world you had models one in London, but I think Germany she just thought, you know, I was quite classic as a beauty and I thought she thought I could do better there to start off, to try to get a little bit of experience under my belt. And it worked. I mean she was, you know, definitely right, but it definitely triggered. You know, you're not
a size four, You're not a size six. They made me go get my jeans. They want do they want like bigger models in Germany? No, I was too big. I was considered really heavy, So yeah, yeah I was. I mean it was listen. I also Bobby entered the modeling world, you know with Karende, Kate Moss, heroin Chic. So it wasn't the Cindy Crawford, you know, it wasn't that whole beautiful. It was changing and I cut off
all my hair. I dyed at Clarial Espresso. I tried to you know that hum but it was definitely you know, difficult in terms of kind of understanding that, oh, hey, it's not about what you're saying, it's about what you look like. And for right now, it was really a difficult moment to go from working so hard to get into Vanderbilt to just standing there and then everything being focused on what you look like. So yeah, I mean I never knew my nose was crooked. I didn't know
until very crooked. To me, well, thank you until the photographers. We're gonna go to a little bit left right. You know, there are things that you know you don't realize and thank God because then you don't obsess about them. But yes, I have to say, did body dys morphia take over? It's there was no way it wasn't going to. I mean when someone you know, can I still get a
little like sweaty palms when I'm doing a fitting? Sure, I mean not as much now because I have the money, and you know, I'm not ashamed to say it that Like I can tailor to a size four if I need to, you know, so I don't get quite as uncomfortable as I used to. And you know, I had difficult situations. You know, for the most part, my modeling career was incredib Well, you know, Faith still today helps me and gives me advice and I'm Lee Crystals still my agent, and you know I was very lucky to
have them. Um, but it's you know, it's it is the business, and it's I always say, people always ask me, oh, were you to let Scarlet model? I hope to God not, but you know it will be ultimately her choice. But because it's it's becomes a business. It's not just someone taking your picture. It's not just someone someone's making money off of you. And you had some very big, big, high profile things Victoria's Secret, you had Sports illustrated me and for the girl who was too fat and too
you know, not very cool. Making the cover of French Vogue was pretty, you know, and then getting Sports Illustrated and I did Cover Girl for five years and MTV and you know it wasn't necessarily was I ever really going to be that iconic? You know you are fashion walking down the runway girl. Yeah, but you are your iconic because you have so many different ways to describe you. Because you also then turned it into acting. You were on Is It Vegas? So a lot of time. How
did yeah, really long time. How did that? Like that kind of made you more in the public eye. You know, I really thought after the French Folk cover, I'm like, I am going to be cool. And then you know, I got back to New York. I was living, I would take the concord, I would do I would do work in Paris, and I would come back to New York. And I just thought, Okay, I'm going to do it. And then Diane Smith, who at the time frustrated Diane.
I love Diane itself when I was a lap artist, and um, now it's m J who's amazing, and uh I got the opportunity to to meet her and she was like, I kind of like you, You're like, you're nice. And then I ended up getting the House of Style taking over UM for from so well after what I think they did Amber and Shalom for like a little bit of an interim, but um they kind of really brought back House of Style UM in the late nineties.
And so I did that and through all of you know, reading que cards and learning to be still and I still talk with my hands. UM, I kind of got peeked and I did this old Navy commercial with Matthew Ralston, who still loved this day and at the time it's big into two videos and all of that, and I only said three Yeah, I only said three words only adult Navy. But I said it really well, like a
bunch of different times, and I don't know. Someone was like all of you ever, and I was like, oh, I don't know, I'm not you know, I kind of want to do more business after this, I think, um. And then I ended up taking an acting class, an intensive acting class August Um. Europe kind of shuts down for the models, and so I came out to l A to take an intensive Sandford Meisner class and I ended up loving it. And I ended up doing the two year program while I was living in New York
in Paris and I would fly back and forth. I took seventies seven red Eyes to finish the program. And then at the very end, about a year and a half later, almost two years later, there was this little role called delended a line and she was going to be the daughter of Jimmy con and they're like, don't worry, it's just reoccurring. It's never gonna No pilot gets picked up. Mike, Okay, I don't even really know what a pilot is, but um, and so I ended up auditioning and I was so,
this is how easy. And I don't know if I've ever told the story, but Gary Scott Thompson was our showrunner. I was just actually texting him a second ago. He was our showrunner and he's fabulous and he basically is the one who um um came up with fast and furious. He wrote this incredible article in script actually script from the article, and Um, I was so concerned about being too much like a model. I really wanted someone to take me serious, like really wanted. I can remember my
audition outfit. I had jeans I were like a flip flop like a plane shoe, and like a camo T shirt. Like I looked as unexact sy and is unlike, I'm like, you are going to take me serious? And so I remember and they're like, oh, they really liked you. And I was like, oh that's cool. Um, and they're like, well, they're just like a little bit worried that you came in like in a T shirt and jeans. I'm like, yes,
I want them to take me serious. And so so they were like they're not you're you're okay, like wearing dresses and he old and playing the character. I was like, oh yeah, totally. Um I had to change my accent to be to have more of a New York accent, which that took me a second, but I ended up getting it. And not only did I get it and get it, they were like right before the upfronts at the end of May or the middle of May, they were like, it's um, it's not a reoccurring, it's a
series regular. And I was like, well, you know, They're like, don't worry, it's never gonna go. I was like, okay, well, I live half the time in Paris, so I don't really know, like this is probably not gonna work, but and there you go. It went for five five years. So do me a favorite, show me a New York accent?
Oh my god, um god, I don't know now. Um it's more New York like just talking like a little bit deeper and a little bit you know, like a little bit lower, not like like it's my legs or well, you're in California from Kentucky, so I'm I I know. And Jimmy's was so strong, like once you and he was. He and Josh were the main ones that I mainly worked with. UM, but it was it was great. It was a great experience. I mean Jimmy Khan, I mean, come on, how like, how was he? You know what?
He was an ass in the beginning. I gotta tell you, I left him. He was awful, and I think he was just trying to make me confident, and he was hard on us. He was hard on Josh. I mean, Josh was coming from all my children. I mean, here you are working with a soap star and a model, and then there's Jimmy con who's your iconic veteran of acting, and um. He would just say like, don't just don't
do anything, just stand there. And he was like, well, however, I react, you react back to me, which I was used to because of Meisner, and he just you know, we had one blowout and that was it. He was the best of the best, and I became a great, pretty good, I think actor because of him. And he and I think Josh will say the same. He was tough, and but he was always like playing tennis with us. We never knew how he was going to do his lines.
And because we never knew, we had we got to play and we got to do different things and he he no, he was just he was amazing and I really missed him and I'm sad he passed away. Well, thanks for sharing that, hearing all the things you've done. And now you've got this podcast with which I was lucky enough to be um asked to be on and that's how I got you. I'm i podcast. So that's
great and I'm so happy. But like, you're someone that has like dealt and done so much, what do you do when you're having a moment where you just don't feel good? Like either you know, you're having a bad beauty moment, you're having a bad beauty month, you're having a bad beauty day. Like what do you What are your go to things that kind of help you get it back together? You know? I think I was so used to being always on that it took me a second when I started having babies. I ended up having
a thyroid problem. When I had Brooks, I gained like eighties something pound and that really shook me. I think I wore my hair in a pony's heil so my face would look thinner for like, I don't know, like a year and a half. But I you know, I got used to not having to be so extreme. I think, you know, people don't realize that models wake up, they go to the gym, they eat healthy, they get to a spa, they work on them selves. They they they
they're like an athlete, they're like a ballerina. And I think, you know, I have such admiration for the girls out there that do work so hard because it's not easy. They're constantly traveling, they're constantly under you can imagine so much pressure. And I think people don't realize how much some of the how much some of the girls go through. And I'm just so happy now that there is more inclusivity and you don't have to just be one size, one color like that has made such a difference. But
I think, you know, falling off the wagon. I think, you know, I'll I'll do like my little resets, I'll take my magnesium. I'll drink more water. Bobby Set on her podcast to me, She's like, you know something good, like I don't drink into water. I don't drink of water. I don't even like water. I mean I drink water with a straw because I drink more water if you use a straw, that's a little bit of a hack. Um. I do lemon. I love the Chroma Reset. I love
a local woman here named Alyssa Goodman. She has an incredible great, like four day plan, I'll hone in, I'll walk, I'll get fresh air. Um. It's you know, it's not been easy the last a little bit. Yeah, and the and the point is for the women that are listening to this, like it happens to all of us as long as we just have to do it. But but you know, but people see people like you and say, oh, she's just got it going on and she's just one
of those lucky ones. So I think you've been so outspoken about different things that you've dealt with and made things, you know, really more real. And I thank you for that. Yeah. I think that's when we started the beauty podcast. And you know, originally I know Anna's mind producer listening but dear me and he was like, yeah, I don't like who's Who's chef from New Jersey and she has three kids. I'm like, yeah, but this is the girl that I talked to five times a day. Know it's more about
beauty than I probably do. Maybe not you, but this is what we love. We love bettering ourselves. We love being able to talk to you and like find out what you do, what you take, how you do it, how you wear it, And we are genuinely I think that's why our podcast has been so successful because we really either have an idea of what we want to
talk about. Like you know, we had Jordan Geller, He's my inner chronologist, and we talked about thyroid and hormones and all the different things that can go wrong that you might be gaining weight, you might be losing hair, you might be losing sleep, like really digging down because we are the listener as well going through it, and we genuinely do love helping women, Like as much as I can sit and talk to you, I'm like, okay, I'm going to do that. And I didn't take my
magnesium citrate last night. I'm like, I'm going to make sure and do that. You know, I love some of the things you talk about with fish oil, and those are the same things like we do. You know. I'm I've recently gone back to acupuncture. I UM go to see a woman named Dr Jan and she's incredible. UM and I drink these herbs that tastes like dirt, and I literally it's like chasing a tequila with like lime or lemon, like I have. It tastes so bad. But
she was like, your cheese off, Like you're off. You've had some bad things happen. You've that has been incredible. Um. I breathing, Yeah, how's that going. Well, it's it's going, it's going, it's it's going. I'm learning to to breathe a little bit more. Um, and do meditate. I'm drawing Bobby. Yeah, I don't meditate, So I don't meditate, And trying a breathing I think is really boring. But I'm trying to. So I'm trying. I recently in backt the therapy, you know,
I just you know, trying like do you have these moments? Yeah? You know, and yeah, and it's a conversation and honestly, so thank you for your podcast, and it's it is. It's a conversation. And honestly, we're here not to be in competition of each other, but to help each other and support each other because you know, not all women are you know, the great support you need, so you know,
and I always find that so strange. I remember, and I'm still going to take you up on it, but I remember I was like, oh, I'm thinking about starting something. I'm like, well, if you ever need any help, just call me. And I looked at you and You're like, no, I mean it, just call me. Did you ever start anything? I'm I'm I'm about it, and like three or four months, hopefully I'm working out a little bit of a trademark thing.
But um, it's I don't know why women don't I you know, I love I think my mom was phenomenal at building women up. I mean she had had a conversation in a Piggy Wiggly or a kmart or a Walmart, and she would cut, you know, and that person would come out of there like learning that. She walked form all the day. Here's what you can do too. It's for your skin and castor oil and all olive oil, and here's what you can do for your you know. She just she was that person. Yeah, well you're you're lucky.
And how about your dad? What did he do? Um? He was amazing or he has he is amazing. He's still I've um he um. He's now living in Miami. My parents UM had a hosteal book company called Southeastern Book Company, and they would my dad would be that guy at the end of the year and he would buy back your book and he'd be like, here's ten dollars and the student would be like, but I paid thirty and he'd be like, I know, but your professor
wants another edition, so that you're on another edition. So he was the guy who would actually buy back the books. He had a massive hosteal book business. And he used to work for a company called Follet, which, as you know it now is called Barnes and Noble. So he was very prolific and early on and leaving and starting his own company me and then they had a paper recycling company. UM, they were just yeah, they're amazing. And do you work out? Do you exercise? I mean your California?
Of course, you know I do. And I'm probably at the time this podcast is air, I will have had my back surgery. I'm having an L five S one disc replacement. I'm actually saying it out loud. I um, seven days until I'm doing it. I was supposed to do it last year. I you know, everybody always says you don't want to have back surgery unless you need it. Well after about a year and a half, I do
need it. I have a bulging disc. I actually met my with my back doctor yesterday and and he was like, you're gonna be You're gonna be an happen in Stallar. I was like, I'm probably the only person. And I was like, it's fine, like someone else would love it, but I really I really do need it. I I have missed and I think that's probably ultimately that has, you know, caused me to be a little bit down
working out. I actually really like it. It's helps it helps me with my mind and my head and not being able to has Really it's fine, you know when you're in COVID, but I don't know. I just have the recovery. What did they tell you? It's not much of a recovery. It's a it's a month of walking. And so it's it's I need it. I know I'm gonna do it. Dr Gay and hopefully we'll have him on the podcast and he can say save my life and I'm gonna walk again. I'm not gonna plete to
death and all the things that I'm worry about. But um, I do need it, and I love working out. Um, I love pilates. I have to say I agree with Bobby on multiple of things. But she said on my podcast for the younger women listening, watch the aerobic because you think it does things, it also can hurt things. And for someone who would not lift a two pound away eight um, weights are really important. And I know Molly sims is sitting here saying this on Poppy Brown's podcast.
That's gonna get picked up all over, but weights are really important and not a lot of weight, but strength training really does make a difference. It doesn't make you bulk, it doesn't. You know, everything in moderation, but that is one thing more if you have muscle on your body. So yeah, it is really important. Well, Molly, I just love talking to you. I love seeing you. It was really fun seeing you. I think was it during the pandemic and it was yet at that crazy party, but um,
it was really fun. But I have a last question that I ask all my guests people listening, and I cannot wait to hear your answer. If you could tell everyone listening, what's the one thing that you could tell them that they're they heard from Molly Simps. It's going to change the course of their life or something in their day today, what would it be be okay with change? That's a good one. Yeah, that's a good one. You
gotta change. If you don't change, you can get really stuck, you know, how you go into something and how you get out of something. You've got to be okay with change because change happened. Change can happen for the good, you know. Yeah, change can happen for the bad. And you have to some of the best opportunities I've gotten, and I was really afraid when I was young. I'm like, oh, I can't I can't do this. I don't want don't want to go to Vaannerable. I don't want to leave
you and then to go to Vannerable. Like I can't leave Vanderbilt. And what are you talking about? Like I'm a try helt, Like what I mean? Like I have no business? Like yes, I collect every Vogue seventeen. Why am very clear? Like, but I can't go to New York. I can't live in Europe. So turn your camp into a can and don't be afraid to change something and it might not work and got to change it again. Um, but I do think that is a real thing with my success as being able to change and to pivot
and to and be curious. Kind of goes back to what you said, be interested in your world, be interested in other people.
