What Does it Mean to Listen?

There's a famous line in Scripture that we seem to be getting backward. It instructs us to be "quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." Instead, every one of us is tempted to be slow to listen, quick to talk back, and get angry in an instant. So what does it mean to listen, really? And why should we listen in the first place?
