How to Develop Your Artistic Influence and Thrive Through Transitions w/ Dwayne "Saint Orbin" Bennett, Musical Director and Producer
Episode description
Dwayne “Saint Orbin” Bennett, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and creative entrepreneur, has become one of the most respected and influential musicians in gospel, hip-hop, R&B and beyond. But he didn’t get there without going through the same struggles and frustrations that face every creative.
Having worked with Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, Urban Mystic, Flo Rida, Cris Cab, KING/DNA MusicBoyz, Kanye West, Chaka Khan, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Miami Mass Choir, Michael McDonald and many others, Dwayne has reached the heights of success as a producer and session musician, earned from years of mentoring and training from his musical family.
A native of Connecticut, now resident of South Florida, Dwayne also applied the knowledge and experience he gained as a young church musician, eventually becoming a core member of the Upper Room Ministries of Miami Gardens music ministry, (formerly Cooper Temple COGIC). The church’s band, known popularly as “The Corner”, consisted of top musicians and gained nationwide attention in the early days of YouTube for their innovative musical arrangements and praise breaks.
In this revealing discussion on The God and Gigs Show, he opens up about the frustrations and obstacles that he overcame to become a highly successful musician on the touring circuit, how he handled tough situations in music ministry, and how his attitude has shifted as he’s branched out into other areas of the entertainment industry.
In this episode, Dwayne reveals:
- The essential skills he learned as a young musician that allowed him to master several different roles
- How he handled feeling ‘stuck’ as a church musician when he didn’t see progress musically or spiritually, and why you can’t simply ‘jump ship’ when transitioning from a ministry
- How being open to spiritual leadership helped him grow as an artist
- The lessons he learned from his first experiences in the recording studio
- The key elements of working with high-level artists as a musical director
- How he is pivoting from being only a touring and session musician to producing his own content
- How to develop the right relationships in the industry and find the right mentors
- The importance of valuing relationships that have stood the test of time
