Extra Life Game Day Recap

Welcome to the Gamers Inn. Come on in, pull up a chair next to the fire. It looks like you've had a long journey. I'm your host, Jocelyn, and joining me as always is my co-host, Ryan. Hello, Ryan. Hello. How's it going? It's going pretty good. I am exhausted, and I blame Repo. Yeah, we had Extra Life Game Day this past weekend, and man, time just...

flew once we jumped at a peak. We blew by our end of stream time by like two hours and didn't even notice. Yeah. When Manny was like, uh, guys, it's midnight. I was like, excuse me? It's what now? Yeah, okay, we should go to bed then. Yep, yep. We said we wouldn't go 24 hours. We don't do that anymore. And we streamed into the next day, so must have been having fun.

yeah i mean we it was two days anyways so yeah we were we were definitely having a good time uh thank you everybody who came to the stream thank you everyone who was able to donate uh it was a really really really fun stream we uh we played some good games we had some familiar faces around to do some streaming with it was really good um smite 2 was really fun um i felt there were a couple of times during this show that i felt like we were like

switching games before we were done with them to make sure we got to everything i felt like that with fortnite i felt definitely felt like that was smite 2 as well i can't remember uh well fortnite for sure i think was sort of like a forced Lunch break. So the way the way I had to do it is I didn't put Extra Life in the calendar like I normally do right away because the date is set.

months in advance and I'm usually like okay put it in the calendar this way it's there so when and Ashley and I have a shared schedule so when we're scheduling things and You know, now that I think back on it, I do remember the conversation Ashley had was like, oh, I have to work this Saturday, but I bumped it so I could go do this Halloween thing. And she told me the date it was bumped to. And I'm like, yeah, that's no problem. So it's all your fault.

Oh, it's definitely, I mean, if we've established anything in the pre-show conversation or any conversation, really, yes, it's my fault. It's always Ryan's fault. It's always, well.

When it's Crofton's fault. Yes, I was just going to say, if Crofton's around, his fault taking takes precedence, if that makes sense. Maybe. Someone write it and let me know. But no, I... i put it in i'm like okay actually it's on the 8th and ashley's like what that's what i moved my work shift to and i'm like oh okay we're gonna have to make this work and for folks at home thinking like did ryan do extra life with his three kids watching netflix downstairs no

I asked my parents to come up and watch the kids. Didn't stop them from coming into the room and wondering what I was doing. Oh, my God. Caden commentary was one of my favorite things of the day. We were playing Smite too. And at one point he was like, who's the one with the boobies? All of them, Caden. All of them. This is the booby game. Yeah, that's what he called it. And that wasn't even the Aphrodite god. I think that was just a harpy. So he didn't see Jocelyn's character.

yeah aphrodite is excessive i mean as she should be she is in hades 2 as well she's literally the goddess of love so i don't think she's wearing anything in hades 2 so she is not she's wearing her hair yeah they don't, they don't leave a whole lot to the imagination, but, but yeah, like, uh, we, so they would pop in and I mean, I don't blame them. I mean, like dad's in his office playing video games and is clearly making too much noise. And, um,

It's distracting and like, oh, he's having fun. Let's go see what's going on. Yeah, let's go. Yeah, yeah. Makes sense. Very hard to play Fortnite or Smite 2. Smite 2, I wasn't as worried because we were just... We were just playing against AI and having a good time. Fortnite was a bit tough because that's playing against real people. I think for Peak, I eventually just went and...

put the stream on in the other room so they could watch it. And, um, Oh, sorry. No, you were all right. I feel like the, uh, they didn't watch repo. I told them we, they could not watch repo peak felt very. And I don't.

someone's gonna watch the VOD and make me eat my words but I don't think they heard anything they hadn't heard before so okay well that's that's fair I feel like even when I swear um on the stream generally it's stuff people have heard before i don't get too out there with my with my swears yeah like a random f-bomb like look they're for people who have younger kids and think their kids are never going to hear swear words because you don't swear in the house

They eventually go to school and meet other kids who find these words fascinating and then teach them all the words. All the words. Livvy has already started this. There was a kid in her daycare who had a very, very strict religious family and who was going to Catholic school. And so Livvy hadn't been there.

a month before she taught him oh my god which then his parents treated like a swear and so he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever learned and this little like 18 month old kid taught it to him and i was like how are you a bad influence when you can barely talk Well, you know, as someone who has kids in Catholic school, I could tell you, like, they know all the words too. So it's not long before they're on the playground or at recess or on the...

The bus is the worst. Yeah, I guess because it's like K to eight, right? Like it's all the grades, all the ages. So yeah. Oh, I can only imagine. Yeah, we've had to have a few. uh dinner conversations sign a few uh slips of paper for the bus driver it's look it's a learning experience like we all go through it and um So all that to be said, Peak was fairly tame. I mean, it was it was totally fine. You know, we we did have a good time with it. And I did think like of the four games we played.

Uh, Fortnite's not too bad either. I mean, Fortnite has shooting and stuff, but it's all very fake. Um, they, they would probably, they appreciate, they would want to watch that too. But peak was one of those games that is, is very.

all ages friendly and um it spoke climate shit it's all good i mean there i just i couldn't even couldn't even censor myself there but yeah yeah it's funny like we got that first peak biome so down because i don't even know how many runs we did i lost track but like that second one was so hard

i don't know like why they put it like the new if they were gonna make the new biome super super hard why isn't it like the third or fourth or like i've never completed a run so i don't even know how many biomes there are in a complete run but like why was that second because that felt to me like it was absolutely insane there were like things like enemies chasing us like there were zombies there were bugs there were spiders up in the trees like blocked off um like area like pathways

There were poison explosions, like spore explosions everywhere, plus clouds in just the atmosphere, plus the wind to blow you into all that shit. It was insane how like the difficulty changed from the first biome to the second biome. I actually like I like peak as a game, but I found that to be super frustrating because I feel like we tried. every possibility of how to get up that area. And we had four people.

Right. So four people should be the easiest that peak ever is. Right. To do boosting and helping each other up and everything else. Yeah, we just we could not get we died at the same elevation every single time because we just made it over to that that one rock face and we just could not get up. And yeah, that was I found that.

really frustrating by the end and i thought beau was a trooper considering he's not a huge fan of peak anyway i thought he was a trooper to do like what we did probably three or four runs with him so good on you beau Yeah. Yeah. No, there's a, so there's five biomes you have to complete to get to the top. I've, I've never done it. I don't, I believe, I believe Crofton and Bo had said that they had done it once. Maybe.

But yeah, that roots biome that we did that we were struggling with, I agree. Very difficult. It is brand new. I don't know if they need to tune it or... That update landed like... days before game day yeah i was like oh super cool i did the i did the update and then i was like oh man this is so cool new biome right before we start but i assumed that it was like

First biome is easy, and then second one is like an easy, because I know that they're not necessarily, I think the island is always first, like the beach into the island climb with the coconuts and stuff. I think that's always first. But after that, I thought it was like randomized each week. And like I assumed there would be like if the roots spawn it.

like the second biome they're easier than if they spawn at the fifth biome you know does that make sense like i assumed it was always a scaling difficulty i don't know if that's how this game actually works after playing it this way. I feel like it's just the first biome is just to literally get your feet wet and get some sort of momentum going.

may not wanted to have like buried the new content past like too much like they wouldn't have wanted to make it like fifth because they want people to see it and get excited about it But like, I felt like that was way too difficult, way too difficult. But I mean, I think they changed it up at weekly. I'm pretty sure it's weekly. So there will be a new randomly generated mountain to climb.

This week. I think it's daily. I think it's like every 24 hours. Yeah. There's a countdown when you load it up. Oh, OK. Anyways, yeah. And the point was that it respawns and changes. And yeah, I think that because we played peak back to back with repo, both of which use proximity chat. And I thought really, they just made such great use of it. And we're so fun. I couldn't believe how much time we spent in repo. And like we spent more time in repo than anything else during the day, I think.

And yeah, it just time flew by. So yeah, it was it was really, really, really fun. The one thing I will say is like we especially later on into the night. There were a couple of runs that we had where there just weren't enough valuables left. And there's no indicator that you reached a fail state.

I have since seen, because I looked it up and I'm like, how is there nothing telling you that you literally physically cannot complete the level? And I looked it up afterwards and people, a lot of people had that same complaint. And the advice basically was to think of it like a roguelike, in that you get as far as you can, you gain your knowledge, then you start all over again.

and do another run, basically. And I was like, okay, if I thought about it like that, maybe I would have called it earlier. But I think it would really help because, well, obviously, over the last little while, I've been playing a shit ton of Hades 2.

It's very obvious when your run is over. You basically die and have to teleport back and regain your strength. So, like, having something, even if it was like a... a counter of available money on the map or something then it would be so much easier and i think would have like maintained the momentum of the game

if we could see that, like, okay, there's not enough money left on the map to hit the objective, so let's, you know, blow ourselves up and start again. Because we spent a lot of time, like, probably a solid, like, half hour, maybe longer, I think in two days. runs trying to turn the place like top to bottom looking for more money and we just we just couldn't find it because it didn't exist so yeah that was really frustrating that there was no like you've hit

the end of the run kind of potential notification or whatever. Yeah. I wonder if that's feedback that they've, I assume it's feedback they've received. There were a lot of threads about it. Okay. Well, I mean, it seems like a good like fail state to add in early access of like, OK, yeah, like we've gotten to this point where, yes, as a player group, you can screw up and doom yourself. And I will tell this story before.

I think Crofton has an opportunity to tell it. There's actually a few stories with him in this playthrough, and I'll let Jocelyn tell the second one. But the first one was, I think it was our... I think it was our last playthrough and we were, as you said, turning the place upside down to find like $2,000 more to move on to literally the next level and continue on our path.

And we couldn't find anything. And finally, I found like a diamond on the top of a shelf. And the whole point is to get all of this money. to a certain threshold and then you can progress and leave the level and go to the next one so if we had gotten that diamond and put it in and yes we've talked about this before i'm notorious for breaking stuff but the physics in the game like if you don't

like if you try to jump and grab something it's very likely you're going to smash it on the way down like you're not gonna be able to yes yeah pull it away so there's this diamond on top of the shelf and of course it's like midnight and i'm like okay i'm gonna oh i found something guys we can We can keep going. And I go to grab it, jump, grab it. And as soon as my character descends, it smashes because it's a gem and it's super fragile. And I'm like, well, I think we do.

I think I just cursed us. And we're doomed to just wander these halls searching for nothing. This was at the tail end of the night. But I really do wish the game would say like, oh, game over. There's not enough left. I did feel like when we were playing compared to when we played on game night, not like maybe a month prior, maybe two or three weeks prior, the difficulties kind of shot up.

There was a few monsters that would legit destroy the valuables in our cart and not just the baby, but like there was this one monster that would come in and kind of roam the halls and then use its big hands.

To kind of like, like attack you. But a few times I saw it go up to the cart and just kind of like smash everything in it. And we lose like half the value of everything in there. So. and we were we were far like we got i think we were like three or four waves through but i really did feel like when there was four of us playing on game night we we didn't fail we kind of just ran at a time

we had played the two hours and we were like, okay, we got to call it there. But for actually of game day, like we, we failed a few times, both on our, by our own accords and by the monsters taking us out. Yeah. And I don't know if the amount that you need scales with party size, like maybe that was part of it too. Maybe.

The amount required was higher, but also the number of party members made it so much easier to bump into people when they were running away from things and do damage to valuables and all that kind of stuff. I don't know. I do think one thing about having a bigger party was that there was a bigger like dead people chat.

And so when I would die, it was actually a lot more fun because like very quickly I would have somebody to talk to. Whereas when we were playing with only four people, it felt like I was alone in there often. Right.

would have you know like maybe one having like half the party dead seemed like it happened very rarely when there were four of us but quite often when there were six of us so you know between like accidentally dragging monsters into your friends and all that kind of just like when there were more people more people died um but that made the um dead people chat

hilarious yes the number of times oh my god ryan you are the most oblivious person i've ever seen perfect you should have no problem playing horror games ever because like There are ghosts right behind you waiting to murder you or jump scare you. And you are just like pushing the cart. And I'm sitting there in dead people chat.

like spectating you and there's literally like the giant eat your face nun thing oh yeah right behind you and you're just like go through like three rooms before you even realize that there's a ghost on your tail and then you're like whoa and then ryan dies no shit i i love that so the beauty of the fact that we're uh i most of us were in using in in-game voice chat but was having some issues with

both peak and repo are both early access. So like there's some audio driver issues with certain setups and, and Bo was having an issue there, but in repo, I, I would be in the same boat as you, Jocelyn, is in death chat and you're in the broken users or something chat and you're watching people and you can see from a third-person view what everybody's doing.

And you would hear them talking like in their in their space. Yeah, you could hear everybody. Yeah. But they couldn't hear you. Yeah, they couldn't hear you. You get the whole experience of like them. talking freaking out and then like their voice chat cutting and then them popping into the death chat and like continuing to freak out it like it just lends to the the fun of the game that has like

nothing really to do with like the, like the gameplay. It's the mechanics never necessarily. Yeah. So I, I think I really appreciated that. Like from, from a voice chat perspective is like it created. that fun as well whereas like if you were all running around there'd be multiple parts where there's six of us running around and we're all in our own areas and we're like man we haven't heard from manny in a long time i hope he's okay and yeah we just assume like

Oh, he's dead. And then they've added. And this is the other cool part about the early access of it all is like since we last played, they added the mechanic that you can come back from the broken users chat to like repossess your your head. And then you can talk to people and it modulates the voice to sound like really creepy, like you're haunting your dead robot head. And that had led to like a lot of moments where like you can, you know.

screw around with your teammates or you can actually provide them advice you know and for the most part we would just we would basically be chirping at each other because that that's the fun thing to do but oh man there was there was one point where like we were having trouble finding valuables and i think three of us were alive and three of us were dead

And we kept like they had they had found all of our heads. They had put us in the like revived spot and they had to keep coming back and dropping off valuables in that spot to try to hit the quota. And so they but they kept coming in one at a time. And so we would all possess our heads and we saw somebody coming back to the cart and then just tell them random crap like, Crofton is possessed. Don't trust both.

and they were like what the hell is happening is this some new monster or something what does possessed mean like and then of course that crofton did it because we all know crofton did it yeah There was a moment where we were all alive and we had finished a run. And when you finish a run, it will, or sorry, a turn in, it will drop like a bag of money.

of the extra money that you got from the first turn in i was standing uh next to the cart because i had just respawned and i went to go start moving the cart and someone crofton picked up the money bag swung and hit me in the face and killed me because when you respawn you have one health out of a hundred and so if you get hit by a breeze you will explode so i literally respawned and then

like instantly exploded and it was a hundred percent crofton and he knows that he did it because this is the other thing about proximity chat and dead chat it's like

There was one point where Crofton was walking around all by himself. And you can't tell when you're being spectated or anything like that. He's walking around all by himself, talking to himself, being like... oh man now there's there's gonna be a segment on cold earth and they're gonna talk about oh crofton did it again i'm like oh my god this is my favorite thing ever and he's like

You know, I did it, but like, I didn't mean to. It's like an accident. Nobody knows. They all just get so mad. It's just laughing my fucking ass off. It's like, you know, spoilers for an old, not old, but an HBO documentary series called The Jinx. The whole thing at the end is they get a hot mic moment where he confesses basically to the killings.

I mean, it's essentially what happened in Repo is Crofta didn't know we were listening in and he's cursing himself. Well, of course I didn't. I don't know why they have to make a big deal of it. Yeah. But like we would, and then when, after that happened, every time we would repossess our heads, we would, we would say Crofton did it. We were like basically haunting him at that point.

it was amazing it was so much fun because this is the thing it lets it let you like create your own fun like it seems like a very simple concept like go into a place avoid some monsters get enough money and get out But it's very because of the proximity chat and the dead chat, it does really become like a little sandbox, make your own fun kind of thing.

You could lure monsters into your friends and you could do all kinds of crazy stuff. The number of times people would just come running through a door. They're like, what's going on? There's like three monsters behind them. Like, you couldn't say anything? And I am the biggest scaredy cat ever. Oh, man. And I got super-duper just, oh, I got jump-scared so many times. Yeah. I mean, you're not oblivious like I am where I'm just running around saying, man, we're all monsters.

i i literally right up his butt yeah yeah you know i'm surprised i didn't like hear them at all because like the audio is is is well done like you you can hear when like the music shifts you're like oh what's going on yeah uh but no it's it's a game that honestly when i when it was first sort of brought to our attention i'm like i don't know this

This doesn't seem like our kind of game. It might be too scary. Like, you know, it looks kind of silly. Like, what is this robot? And then Ryan and I played as those robots in Fortnite. And then Fortnite let me put shoes on those robots. And that was hilarious. yeah yeah um i think yeah repo there's just there are so many good games this year and i mean peak and repo uh i don't know if repo i think repo did come out this year i think um yeah

There have just been so many good gaming experiences in 2025. I still have two more to play. I'm going to play. uh dispatch we're gonna talk about that in full next week so if you guys are have been like me and waiting for all the episodes to come out before you play it it's all available if not right now very very soon like in the next couple days

So I'm going to play it for next week and Ryan's going to finish it for next week. So if you guys want to play along, we'll be talking about that next Tuesday. Yeah, that and Expedition 33 is also on my list to finish before the end of the year because everyone... ever since it released, has talked about how it's game of the year. So I feel like I've played all the other like really heavy contenders. So I can't not play.

expedition 33 and i've had so many experiences in games that i wouldn't normally think that i would like so yeah i'm gonna give it a shot and and see what it's got going on but uh yeah if you're looking to play along with us hit up dispatch for next week But yeah, there's been so many things in 2025 that have been so, so good and so fun for totally different reasons. Peak and Repo are definitely on that list. Yeah, what's...

Hesitate to put this out there because I know I'm probably forgetting something. Like, what's on my 2025 missed list that I need to play? Like, did I miss anything? Like, was there... was there something big and this isn't like, this isn't like some, you know, antic where I, I know of the game and I'm just being clueless. Like I'm literally.

like there was a lot of great stuff that came out in 2025 but i don't feel like i kind of missed anything and and i like expedition 33 would be the big one and i and i feel like you you should definitely check that one out. Cause I think that it, although mind you, when you do, if you do run into issues with the gameplay, definitely don't feel bad switching it to story mode. Cause I,

I did that and I had a much. Oh, I'm definitely, I'm definitely going to play it in story mode just for time reasons. Cause I do, I am going to want to finish it like in the next few weeks. So sure. Yeah. Totally doable too. Like it is not an incredibly long game, but it is totally worth playing for the story. And I do like the turn-based combat. It's very close to Super Mario RPG with like the time-based antics.

time-based sort of button prompts and stuff that you push. I really appreciate that. But you can, I think the gameplay, when you turn story mode on, it makes those a lot easier to hit, which makes you feel like that much more of a badass. and and don't be afraid to look up builds i looked up builds and once i did i was like this is this is amazing so much better yeah because i i am not good at at crafting that stuff but um

Yeah, if there if there are games that I missed this year, it is likely because they are so far out and and known to be ones I don't like. Did you ever play two point museum? Have you played any of? The two points that I've told you to play is probably a better question. No, I have not. I've never played any of the two point games and I know I'd probably like them. So what was the one that came out this year?

Two Point Museum was the one that came out this year. And yeah, Museum has some very interesting mechanics. It was a good iteration, like a good third entry in the franchise. Okay, so there's Two Point...

There was hospital, and then there was campus, and then there was museum is the third one. Okay, so this is what I should... check out is this what i'm missing and i know for you know there's folks in the discord like oh rebirth ryan's like that didn't come out this year but yes still on the list 100 uh but if if we were making arguments i should have played it last year for, for this specific conversation, but okay. Two point museum. That's fair. I know Civ seven didn't hit.

Like for everybody. Yeah, I was going to say like Civ 7 technically came out this year, but I really wouldn't recommend it unless you get it for basically free and then you could give it a try. But it was a pretty big disappointment to me. But yeah, like, I don't know, like, and you played Silk Song, you played Altars, you played, obviously, Hades. Yeah.

You played Avowed. That was this year, right? Yeah, I played Avowed. I haven't played Outer Worlds 2 yet, but I am looking. Oh, right. I forgot about that one. Did you play Split Fiction? No, no, I played it with Matt. Okay, because that's another one that I feel like is in the conversation. It wasn't my favorite, but I feel like it's definitely going to be talked a lot about.

OK, yeah, I'm looking at this list. So Golden Joystick Awards had their 2025 Game of the Year nominees out. And of the list, Death Stranding 2, which I tried the first one recently and I'm like, OK, this isn't. This is my cup of tea. Ghost of Yotai, I just haven't played yet because that's expensive. I am waiting on that one. If not, it might just not happen. uh kingdom come deliverance 2 was that this year was that late last year i feel like that was late last year

It's one of those weird ones. We always run into this because we do it by calendar year, but a lot of people do it since last award show and the award shows are at varying times in December. So sometimes like... I think that happened to Indiana Jones, too. Yeah. Where, like, it missed the one year or so that it was in the conversation for the next year. Sorry, we're getting sick again here in the Kearney house. It's frustrating.

It comes with the territory of small children. No, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 was February of this year, so that was this year. I have not played that one. Silent Hill F. I'll just use the title. F Silent Hill. No way. Not happening. Not going to play that. It wasn't. I watched one of my DVD streamers was playing it and I watched like the first, I don't know, probably hour and it didn't look necessarily.

Like not that it wasn't scary, but it wasn't like as bad as I would as I guess built Silent Hill up to be in my mind. Yeah. Well, I was contemplating playing the Silent Hill 2 remake because I do like what Bloober Team had done with some of their previous games, which were... Not as well received, like The Medium was one of them, and Silent Hill 2 Remake was well received. But I think if I were looking at this list, I think Split Fiction is one of those that kind of stands out.

Uh, that I've, I've heard really good things. Um, that might be the one on this list that kind of, you know, pops out at me that like, Oh, I, I probably. should check that one out. I feel like it is going to get a lot of conversation at Game of the Year. I think Ghost of Yotai might be kind of like the PlayStation.

Throw them a bone. Although Death Stranding 2 is on there too. The whole point of this whole conversation is there's so many great games that came out this year. There's so much. You can't play everything. You shouldn't have to play everything. But... Two-Point Museum. If Jocelyn is playing Expedition 33, I can play Two-Point Museum. I think that's a fair trade.

It's really cute and it's really fun and I think that you'll like it. Go and check that out. Everyone else should go and check out patreon.com slash thegamersin like our November patron Rondell did. Thank you so much for the support.

News

of the show. We have the monthly host special, which I need to remember to do because it's already November 11th. What? So, yeah, I need to I need to figure out what I'm doing and get it written and recorded because, oh, man, this month is getting away from me. And I am so glad that December is not mine because with all the Christmas stuff.

Man, Ryan, I hope. Well, I guess the Christmas stuff almost writes itself, though. What games do you play at Christmas time, Ryan? What's your nostalgia like for Christmas morning? Oh, man, you get it so easy. Well, it's funny because someone. There was a joke in the discord. I don't know how it happened, but I wrote down, I wrote down my December idea. I mean, yes, that's a good one. And I was kind of.

leaning towards it but then like oh that's just this sounds like all my other ones that i've done it's like what yeah what's ryan gonna you know be nostalgic about this time so uh this time i think we were talking about backlogs and then there was uh so there's this meme of like ryan's i'll get back to it so there was a conversation of like okay for the december special i've got

I've got an app with lists in it. So I'm just going to go through my backlog and be like, okay, why did I stop playing each of these games? Yeah, because then you can either say like, absolutely, that was a valid reason or, oh, I'm going to bump it up the list and actually go and play that. Yeah. So yeah, I think that's a good idea. I need to think of something for in the next like week. You do Christmas and then you can release it on November 30th. And then technically, you know.

That's not a bad idea. It was your idea. You might as well take it. But that's not what my specials are. My specials are telling stories in the gaming industry. It's not the same. Take a month off. I do enjoy writing them. Anyways, not the point. Point is, I am up for this month for the host special.

it will be up before the end of the month at patreon.com slash the gamers in we also have our game night which is next friday november 21st wrap your head around that at 8 30 p.m eastern uh so the poll is over on patreon so if you are a patron make sure that you let us know what you want to play on game night and if you want to spot um when we actually play so anyone can come and hang out

We stream the game over to Discord and basically chat with anyone who shows up. So if you want to come and hang out, again, that is Friday, November 21st at 8.30 p.m. Eastern. We will let you know next week what game we're going to play. We also had, as we've been talking about, Extra Life this past weekend. If you'd like to donate, go to tiny.cc slash TGI Extra Life. I think we're all still...

Except for maybe Nevermore. I'm pretty sure Nevermore hit her goal. But I think everybody else is still shy of their goals. So if you would like to support the Children's Miracle Network of Hospitals, you can head to tiny.cc slash TGI Extra Life. We are going to be doing a holiday party on Friday, December 19th from 8 to 11. This is, again, will possibly probably be the last stream of the year for Extra Life. over on twitch.tv slash JossPlays.

But yeah, there might be more stuff coming between now and December 19th, because as I mentioned, most of our members are still below their goals. So everyone's going to be trying really hard to hit them. So again. tiny.cc slash TGI Extra Life if you can donate, twitch.tv slash JossPlays if you want to watch some streams. And yeah, go and follow everybody else who's on the team as well because we had lots of streamers. Josh was streaming. I think Travis is streaming.

um kind of he wasn't able to stream on game day but has been streaming a lot over the past few months so that is um pixel mountain gaming over on twitch so yeah go and check everybody out make sure you can support them as best as possible even if you can't donate uh sharing the link and sharing the streams helps us out a lot

That brings us to the news this week. This, honestly, if you had posted this news in April, I would have thought it was a joke. But Netflix is making an overcooked reality show. And like... I kind of maybe understand the concept. I just don't think like, I don't know. Part of the fun of Overcooked is like... all of the crazy stuff that happens because you've got like, you know, areas that you can't necessarily get to or like moving pieces like.

you know one person's on one boat the other person's on another boat and then like so i mean maybe they will be able to incorporate some of those like moving kitchen pieces but i don't know man this seems like There are a lot of literal moving pieces to Overcooked. I don't know if you're going to be able to replicate that in a reality show and make it as entertaining as watching the game. What do you think, Ryan? Well, I will...

Answer your question with a question. Have you ever seen the Floor is Lava show on Netflix, the reality show Floor is Lava? No. Okay, so... If you watch that or check it out, even look for a trailer, I think that will show the length that Netflix goes with some of their... Sort of I assume what Overcooked would be would be similar to the game. It would be a very like game show style reality show. And Flora's Lava is like they take the simple concept of three seasons of this. Caden.

loves it it is and it is a very entertaining show where they play floor is lava where the floor uh is sorry to break to you not lava but it is like this churning orange water and like they have this deal with all the contestants they must sign a paper that like that says if you fall in you're to sink to the bottom so we can cut away and pretend that you died in the lava

And every contestant that falls in the water does like the Terminator 2 slow melt into the lava. And then they cut away as if, oh, and he's dead. And it's. great so like the sets they come up with with that i feel like the overcooked show could be a combination of floors lava and oh my god so i just um okay so i just saw like i'm watching the season two trailer and they have harry from that love show

Oh, my God. They've got reality stars on reality stars in other reality shows. And I hate that I even know who that hairy person is. I would know. I mean, usually when I watch, it's like, you know, we're three teachers from Alabama and like we're. three hospital workers from Connecticut. And it's, it's usually like a handle. That's what it is. Too hot to handle. Yeah. See, I, I don't know. I know of the show, but I didn't know.

That makes sense. Don't watch it. It's garbage. OK, all of Netflix stuff is garbage. I think maybe that's why I'm like, I don't know. Maybe it's just stupid, dumb entertainment and it'll be fine. It'll be fun. But you're right. That was. much more production value than i was expecting for the floor is lava yeah it's honestly it's a fun show kaden loves it and the kids will watch it and it's like

It reminds me of those old school reality shows that we used to watch when we were kids, like the YTV, you know, slime. I can't remember what it's called, but like the. Oh, look at me. We were rich and had white. TV. We did not. We did not. We would watch it when we went to my nanas who had cable, but we had three channels. But look, I just, I wanted to belong. We would literally get my... cousin who lived in Ottawa to like tape.

pokemon episodes and he would whenever we see him he'd give us like a vhs of like here's the pokemon episodes we could get and it'd just be like totally disjointed so yeah anyways uh we did not grow up with ytv we just We just watched it occasionally. My Nana loved it when we visited because, you know, we just watched cable, I guess. And by loved it, I mean did not. But anyways, Overcooked, reality show on Netflix. I mean, that sounds...

That sounds like a continuation of the floor is lava meme and is it cake and and all that. I mean, I'm going to watch it because, OK, I do watch me some is it cake because sometimes it's really hard to tell guys. Yeah, it's incredible. I love a good baking show. So, yeah, I mean, I'm sure I'm going to watch it. We'll see how it goes. I mean, I also watched Nailed It and really like Nailed It.

That's kind of what I have in my head is like nailed it level quality food being like served to people, I guess. I don't know. If the people who order the food have to also eat it, then that I think is what is going to make this show next level. Although it's probably unsafe because they get raw meat and shit. Anyway. yeah i'm sure this is gonna be ridiculous it'll probably be entertaining it'll be dumb it's on netflix that's their brand yeah

Speaking of TV shows, BioWare did provide an update on N7 Day. So that's every November 7th. And apparently the next Mass Effect game is still in development. It's actually happening. And there's a TV show, too, set after the original trilogy, which I'm like...

Why wouldn't you just tell the story of the original trilogy? Like, this makes me think, like, I know Fallout. Okay, Fallout is a very good example of how telling... a story that is in the universe but not necessarily in the games is can be successful however i feel like the story of mass effect is so strong Like, why wouldn't you just tell it? I mean, that's fair. It seems like they're making the Warcraft mistake, honestly. It's like, you know what people want. It's the story of Shepard.

Why would you deviate? It's like, you know what the WoW audience wanted. It was Arthas. Like, why would you deviate? So I just hope that by setting something after the original trilogy that they're not like shooting themselves in the foot. Yeah, I mean, it's it's kind of a wild thing. It's certainly like they had two choices. They could adapt a specific string of.

Like the story, no matter what, if they had done Shepard's story would have been the same hit the same points that you do in the video game, whether you're a meanie or sorry, a renegade or what was the other one? Paragon.

paragon maybe that's what they didn't want to do is that like make too much of Shepard's like relationships or alignment or anything else like canon I guess But at the same time, you could have done a fallout and, you know, kind of like, even if you chose, like, to follow everyone but Shepard, like, follow the council, follow Saren, follow, like...

the um like all the leaders of all the different like there's so much going on in the universe around shepherd that like yes shepherd has the main story sure but you could argue that you could tell a different story a la Fallout and have some success in the Mass Effect world, like, set at the same time as Shepard. And you could encounter Shepard.

And, you know, Shepard's crew, all of those kind of characters and whatever, like there's a lot going on in that universe before people even link up with Shepard. I don't know. I feel like there's just like that original trilogy and the part of the universe in the time. lane they built in the original trilogy is so strong and so well fleshed out deviating from it seems like a mistake but we'll see at least it's still working or like at least it's still being worked on

Yes. Yeah. I mean, honestly, like not doing Shepard's story feels like the harder option. As you said, you've got such a great story, such a great cast of characters to go. past the original trilogy, you're still dealing with what is probably the hardest part of following that trilogy is just choosing a canon ending. Yeah.

we've established that the next game takes place after the trilogy is not a galaxy away is going to have Liara as one of the characters that's already been, you know, confirmed. So there must be, yeah, there must be a canon ending in-universe if Liara is going to exist. Yes.

Because Asari live a long time, but not long enough that you can be like, it's tens of thousands of years, so it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, yeah. Well, especially if you did the universe-altering thing that stopped the cycle and merged. organic and inorganic life then like that's like you change the universe the whole thing yeah i mean unless they are trying to like build out the lore leading to their next game like i can appreciate wanting

to like fill in. I'm sure that's what they're trying to do. Yeah. I mean, I can appreciate that they want to fill in that gap without having to resort to. books i guess what other video games do i love reading don't get me wrong but i mean uh a high production amazon series if they can nail it similar to fallout That's great. But honestly, I have dragged Warcraft, so I feel like I need to speak up here and I have dragged Warcraft left, right and center.

for telling the most important parts of their stories in novels, in like between expansions. instead of putting it in game. And so I feel like if you need a TV show or a book or whatever, some other form of media outside your game to bridge the gap between like a two and a three or three and a four or whatever.

that you're doing your game an injustice. You're doing your audience an injustice because they're there for the game. They're not there for the extended universe stuff, right? So if I'm going to drag Blizzard for it, I'm going to drag Bioware too. I don't like this. If that is their actual, which I'm sure it is their goal. But if that's the goal, I don't like that. I would rather play it in a video game. Like if it's worth telling me, put it in the game universe. Like, come on. Yeah.

I think, I think it is it like they were presented with a choice and like, do we, do we retread what we've done? going with the original trilogy yes what you did was good retread it yeah i agree with you i would have loved to see like sort of a amazon's choice commander shepherd run uh and But you know, no matter what they choose, it's going to upset a portion of the fan base because it's not going to be their shepherd. So, like, I can understand why.

I don't know. I think anyone who is an actual fan of the series should be able to understand canon, right? And that their choices are not going to be 100% reflected. Like, no one's are. No. So. I feel like, you know, rational people would rather just see Shepard's story even if it doesn't follow their exact playthrough. I think they'd still rather see a Shepard than no Shepard, in my opinion.

agree with you but we know the internet as well as other folks too and i said rational people not the internet yeah if only there was an internet only for rational people wouldn't that be yeah a quiet calm cool place uh be the good place really but yeah i yeah i'm excited to see what comes from mass effect in the near future but it sounds like a lot of this is a ways off like maybe 2028 style i was gonna say i'd expect you know 2027 late 2027 or into 2028 for sure

Yeah. Oh, well, we have plenty of games to play for now, right? Like we don't need to rush towards the next, next mass effect. Take your time, but not too much time. Yeah. Nintendo is, I guess, has confirmed, because I thought we already knew this, but maybe it was just rumored, consistent release cadence for more video game movies. So we already know that Zelda is coming. We know that we are getting a sequel. I think it's in April next year to the Super Mario movie.

So they're doing more after that and they're going to continue, it sounds like, to make more after that. Are there any like Nintendo franchises that you would really like to see made into a movie? I know there's a poll at the bottom of this IGN article and it is far and away one answer. And so I'm curious as to as to what you think. uh well i mean i think that i would like to see i think metroid would work really well as a as a

That'd be a hard one to... That was the far and away number one answer. Everyone wanted Metroid. Although they did float an Animal Crossing horror movie, and I was like, I'm down for that one. But it would never happen. There's a struggle with the rest of their franchises because after you do Mario and after you do Zelda, there aren't a lot of options for movies, you know, like.

Kirby, Pikmin, like Star Fox isn't well known enough. I might watch a Luigi's Mansion movie, honestly, like a horror movie for kids with Luigi. I feel like that could be successful. Yes, 100%. And I know that's been floated by the guy who voices Luigi, Charlie Day. He has said he would love to do a Luigi's Mansion movie.

Having played those games on and off, they actually just added the original to the GameCube Nintendo Switch Online, and I was playing a little bit of it. It would work really well as a movie. Because its idea is just so simple and you could condense it into an hour and a half without overstaying its welcome or without rushing.

Like Mario, it's funny because when you think of Nintendo, like the Mario franchise itself is just, it's so easy to kind of pick apart and be like, you could do a movie over here. You could do a movie there and it's all animated and you could do a Donkey Kong one, which has been rumored.

will likely be the one that comes after Zelda if they're doing yearly. But if you're looking at other franchises they have in their stable, I think the only one that kind of serves as like a big budget... sort of project would be like a metroid uh again like it's a it can be boiled down and be very simple because the story is is is uh

is usually very simple it's like go destroy this go destroy these things like it's not a very complex story you could condense it into a movie and have fun with it i think that's where zelda kind of struggles is um I've actually been reading the Twilight Princess mangas that came out. They were at the library and I was like, what's this about? Having played Twilight Princess for Game Club this year. Very recently, yeah. And it's interesting how they condense it.

Having played the game and then reading the story in this manga format, they don't do the dungeons. They just do the boss fights. Like he goes to the dungeon. that is in the game and he does a couple things and then he fights the boss. And I can kind of see now like, oh, okay, so that's how they're going to do the movie. He's not going to be in a dungeon for three hours getting lost. Yeah.

Move through a couple of rooms, give you the gist of it, and then kill the boss. Exactly. That's how it fits into a movie. So I do worry, though, that the second Nintendo gets a flop, they're going to be out. So I don't read this story and think, oh, we're going to get so many Nintendo movies. Like, no, we're going to get Nintendo movies until one tanks and then it's over for another 30 years.

Yeah, I wonder if there's some sort of like critical mass of success that because I totally agree with you unless they have like.

three or four mario movies that do amazing then like zelda does amazing donkey kong does amazing and then they do luigi's mansion and it totally flops I think if they already have five or six successful movies under their belt, that there is going to be that kind of like... momentum that just you know can't be stopped by one failed movie sure um they might drop that franchise but

you know, like, I mean, drop the franchise from a movie perspective. And, you know, not make follow-ups, not make sequels. But like, yeah. Man, if they make a Majora's Mask movie, I don't even know how they would do that. But I think it would be really interesting. And obviously it's my favorite Zelda game. So yeah, I would go to the theater 18 times just to prove a point. Yeah, every three days you'd have to go.

Yeah, every three days. Exactly. It's like, wow, we have this really weird trend with the Majora's Mask movie. There's this one person. who comes every three days. And when she enters the lobby, she's like 24 hours remain. And then she leaves. She doesn't even buy popcorn. And then she comes back the next day. No, I, I wonder, I wonder how.

I think, you know, the first Mario movie did really well. I feel like the second one, which as of this recording is going to have a direct and we'll talk about that one next week when, when we've seen it. I think that one will do well.

But that Zelda movie, it'll be interesting to see their jump to live action and whether they can make that leap successfully. And I think that will tell us what the future holds. Is it just... illumination printing money for nintendo or is it nintendo being able to create big enjoyable live action

the pieces because like i knew they would be successful at animation if they were able to like get their hands in there and work with the right partner but live action is a tricky beast it it is a lot harder to pass off bad writing in live action, you know? So we'll see. I'm that Zelda movie comes out, uh, spring 2027, I believe. So.

I think so, yeah. They're filming now, likely a trailer at some point. There's probably going to be a trailer on, I think there'll be a trailer on the Mario movie. Maybe a teaser. Yeah, that would make sense. Something. I would think like they're shooting now they would have, I mean, just give us link, like doing as a little sword thing, I guess, where he like flips it back into the, you know, I don't know. Give us something. Give us the guy in costume. That'd be great. Yeah.

Yeah. And one final story we have for you tonight is there's a new Lego Zelda set. based on ocarina of time um and yeah i i thought that the the little like um link figure and he's got navi up there too i'm just like oh this is this is really cute I like this. And we can be excited about it because we don't know the price as of this recording. Yes, exactly. If it costs $500, it doesn't matter because as of right now, we're living in ignorance right now. So it's perfect.

It's just, we got a 12 second teaser and it says coming in 2026. Like we don't know much of anything about anything, but yeah, it's going to. definitely from ocarina of time because navi is there right so that that narrows down the game to a t so uh yeah It seems like Link is facing off against something, and it would be weird if it wasn't Ganon, right? So we'll see what kind of a set that they give us, but could have Hyrule Castle.

Wow. Included. Yeah. Or some amount of the castle. That would be cool. I would love there to be some part of the castle, although that increases the price, which... You know, validates our earlier point about caring about the price. But it does say that in the story here that there was a report that it could be a thousand piece set, which, you know, that's no.

That's no slouch. I don't know what the great deco tree was. Oh, that was 25,000. Sorry, 2,500. 25,000. It's not the Titanic. I was going to say, 1,000 pieces doesn't really seem like that many pieces.

Okay, well then, yeah, I mean, maybe this is going to be an affordable set. I mean, you can tell, like, you've got Link, you've got Zelda in the background there, it's a bit blurred, as you said, Navi's there, and then there's a shadow that appears to be... uh ganon this could be like the final final fight spoiler alert at the end of ocarina time he fights ganondorf uh for those folks who didn't play the 20 year old it's older than that isn't it it's

way older than that i think we're what 30 oh okay well like close because it was late 90s right like we're late 2020s yeah we're going into 2026 so 30 years ago was 1996 i'm sorry ryan it's funny i was i was trying to google it and i was i put in uh ocarina of the time But that is not the game. It was 98. So it's close. 26, 27 years old. We can celebrate it, not with a remake, but with a set of Lego. So there you go. I just hope it's cool.

me too i mean it'll be cool but something yeah because the the deku tree was the breath of the wild version and it was kind of cool because it did have and this is probably why it had more pieces is it was like interchangeable right so there were it was like the two in one set so yeah maybe the uh this new set will be kind of like just as intricate but like

because it doesn't have that two-in-one-ness of it that's why it's only a thousand pieces i don't know and that and the thousand piece thing is a rumor right or did they confirm that it's it's a rumor as of right now it's a previously leaked uh sort of set description uh that matches what what the teaser is laying down so yeah um it would be like a diorama set so probably having various moments of of the game sort of recreated

uh in lego and i'm sure you'll get young link as well as i mean if it is a diorama you get a good opportunity for a lot of um different lego minifigs which is always cool so You'll likely get a Ganondorf as well as maybe a young Link. And yeah, I have been waiting for like a Nintendo set that is sort of like our.

target game so like zelda but isn't like some sort of massively expensive set or or some niche implementation like the mario stuff i think the closest has been like those animal crossing sets which are Not necessarily like our cup of tea to have like sets like that laying around, but I did buy the Isabelle set for Izzy and she loves it, but it's, it's moderately priced. It's decent stuff, but I want something closer to that.

from zelda so i'm hoping i mean this is still going to be a hundred and some odd dollars like i'm i mean i'm not kidding myself but i hope it's cool And I'm sitting here, I'm like, I want some sort of, like, Hyrule castle through the years thing that's like... five thousand pieces and costs a thousand dollars and i'm just like yes that's what i want wait were we just talking about

not buying expensive games and now you're going to take out a second mortgage for lego this is my like pie in the sky apparently i've won the lottery sometime in the next few years when they actually announce and release this fictional Hyrule Castle set. Yeah, don't worry. That's millionaire Jocelyn talking. And yeah, she's totes rich years from now. We all have that list. Of Lego sets we want to buy when we win the lottery.

yeah some people want to buy a house or like pay off their car we just want to buy a very do that with a lottery win anymore so what are you gonna do buy fucking lego buy some sweet lego sweet sweet lego Oh, man. Well, you know, probably by this time next week when we record again, we'll not only have the answer to what the Super Mario Galaxy movie will be, although part of it was spoiled on Blue Sky for me by...

Someone had posted a box of cookies, like those Pillsbury cookie dough things you can get. I guess there's some marketing floating around for Super Mario Galaxy movie. But we'll also probably have this set. unveiled as well, so we'll be able to talk about that next week.
