Episode description

Grace Cathedral, San Francisco

November 15, 2023

Poet, speaker, and one of the UK’s foremost transgender theologians, Jay Hulme, joined us on a rare visit to the United States. Author of the viral poem ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar,’ Jay read from his new collection of poetry, The Vanishing Song; shared his vision of cathedrals as queer/trans; and talked about transgender politics across the Atlantic.

This program was part of our celebration of The Year of Poetry, Grace Cathedral’s 2023 theme. During the Year of Poetry we explored the walls that separate us from each other and the words that help connect us.

More about Jay Hulme

His books for children have been nominated for some of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious writing and illustration awards. His books for adults are published by one of the UK’s leading Christian publishers and are widely reviewed and praised, with his poem ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar’ becoming an international sensation. When he isn’t writing, speaking, or caring for the 1144 year old church where he serves as Churchwarden, Jay enjoys exploring (and climbing up) the ancient churches and cathedrals that litter the British landscape, finding inspiration in their beauty, and in the faith, which has been practiced there for centuries. jayhulme.com
