Episode description

How are memories formulated? How much of our little one's childhood will they remember?

This week on The Expert Guide to Parenthood Podcast we ask our Paediatric Psychologist Expert Dr Deirdre Brandner. We all feel pressure to make memories, so when our little ones look back they remember the “perfect" childhood. The old saying goes we only have 17 summers, right? We ask Deirdre: - How memories are formulated - What the earliest age we can recall a situation / memory is- Is what we can recall accurate? Or a story we tell ourselves? Or is it from a story an adult has shared or a photo we have seen- We all feel pressure to make memories, to provide the “perfect” childhood. How much influence do we actually have on a child’s memory?- How important are big events in memory, or is it more likely how they feel the ‘moments between moments’ that formulate their memories? - Are children more likely to remember bad moments and situations than positive ones?- How do we foster good memories with children through special times, moments, and traditions? - How important are memories to our overall formation of our 'Childhood" experience?
