In his drunken state he drops Hareton over the banister, and the baby is only saved by Heathcliff being in the right place at the right time. Later in the evening, Catherine finds Nelly and confides in her that Edgar has proposed and that she has accepted. Heathcliff happens to overhear the conversation between the two, and more skulks away after hearing Catherine call him uneducated and rough, and of a lower social class, leaving before she says that she loves Heathcliff like she love herself. That night Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights. Catherine spends the whole night in the grounds in a thunderstorm calling for Heathcliff. She falls very ill after the thunderstorm and the doctor declares that she is near death. The Linton’s take Catherine to Thrushcross Grange but she gives her fever to Mr and Mrs Linton, and they both pass away within a few days of each other. Three years later, Heathcliff has not returned, and Catherine has married and moved in with Edgar Linton, taking Catherine with her, forcing Hareton to go into the sole care of his Drunkard of a father.
