He would however never speak these thoughts out loud for fear that he would be kicked out of society, or murdered. One day, Brigham Young, visits John Ferrier. He chastises Ferrier for his lack of wives, and says that he has heard a rumour that Lucy is engaged to a non Mormon. Young demands that Lucy marries one of the Elders' children, and says that he will give her one month to choose which one. Lucy hears the conversation, and after Brigham Young leaves, she comes to speak to her father. Ferrier says that he won't let her marry one of those men, and says that they will flee before the month is up.
