And Hello Eagles fans, Welcome to the postgame show presented by Rico. I'm Chris McPherson alongside former Eagles linebacker and the better half of the Mike and Ike Show on Sports Radio ninety four w ip Ike Reese. What a fun, festive afternoon in South Philadelphia. The Eagles beaten the Colts up and down the field with a thirty six to

ten victory to open the preseason. And Ike, certainly you're happy about the victory, but it's more about the individual accomplishments and the fact that it looks like from banish point that no one got hurt. Well, that's the most important thing, Chris. When you're talking about preseason games, the number one objective is is to get come out of the game with everybody you started the game with. And he was have been able to do that through their

first preseason game. And then you look at individual performances, how did the first team do when they were in there doing their short time, But most importantly evaluating the backup players, the depth, because it's going to be critical for any team the plans on playing late in January. You must have quality guys behind your starters because eventually you're gonna lose a guy. And I think some young guys stepped up today. I was encouraged by some of

the young players that hadn't really shown flashes. There's several young guys that I think played very well today. I think we can delve into some of those guys were off the bat here look at Nelson aglar first preseason catch. Extends his arms over his head to get the highly thrown ball by Mark Sanchez, makes a nice old spin move on the cornerback Greg Toler and takes a thirty four yards for the touchdown. He has been in throughout training camp. I thought it was great to see him

get off to such a great start here for the Eagles. Yeah. Happy for all the fans who haven't had a chance to see Nelson Aguilar in person, the ones who came out to the game today. You see why he was the first round draft pick. I mean, the guy has talent. He has the ability to run after the catch. That's the biggest thing I liked about him is that his ability to get the yards after the catch. They call that yak Chris, and he got plenty of this kid.

This kid throughout the course of his career is gonna rack up a lot of yards after the catch because he's looking to make plays, extend plays with his legs once he once he catches the football, Like he said, a couple of hot throws to day he was able to pull in. It was his first game. I'm sure there's one or two plays that once he looks at the films, he'll say he wishes he could have back.

But I think for a introduction in the Midnight Grain for everyone, I would give Nelson Nelson Aguilar high marks for his debut, no question about Now. How about the second round pick, Eric, I think that he's pressing to push Nold Carroll for that starting job at the other cornerback spot opposite of Byron Maxwell. But you saw him not just on the outside. He moved inside, which is very tough for a rookie to do, especially one who has not played that much cornerback in his career. He

only played his final year at Utah corner. Before that, he was a seat for three seasons. And we see the big play that he made. He got beat on the pass play, but he comes up from behind, makes a great hustle play to strip the ball from Colt's first round pick, Philip Dorset and Chris Pasinski was there with the fumble recovery. Yeah, I love everything about that play, and starting with the fact he was beat playing the slot position because that's not an easy position to play.

But guess what, he continued to hustle after the play. He did not give up on a play. And we call that move that he made to force that fumble the peanut tilmid punch. When you come up from behind the officer guy and you punched that ball out. That was no accident by Eric Rowe. That was a deliberate move. He forced the fumble, got the ball back, force team and that's what they're gonna love about this kid is his effort on every play and his willingness to be

around the football. Had a couple of tip balls as well today, So if nothing else, he's around the football making plays. I think the future is bright for Eric Row. Again, just his first game. First game is not gonna be perfect. It's almost better when you have bad things happen until you in the first game because that keeps you humble

and that keeps you focused. So I thought Eric Row and Nelson Aguilar way more positives than negatives to day, but just enough negatives in there to keep him humbled and keep them working getting ready for that next preseason game. Well, do you recall Jordan matthews first game last year, where did you have like four drops those lines? In fact? Wide receivers. Coach Bob mcnell joked that he was going to show the rookies in his room to tape from that game to say, look, it's not all gonna be

pieces and cream. The fact of the matter, You're gonna have some setbacks. And for Matthews it was probably the best thing for him because everything up to that point in his first train camp had been so positive that he needed that little bit of setback. He needed that little bit of humbling to be able to bring him down just a notch, and obviously it paid off down the line, as he had arguably the second best rookie

season of any wide receiver in Eagles history. ARC Yeah, yeah, I mean, I think Nelson Aguilar is going to have that same sort of learning curve along with Eric. Now, Eric Roll is playing a difficult position. To play cornerback as a rookie in this league is very hard and not alone plan a slot corner, where you have so much more you have to concern yourself with. So he's up to the task. He's played in multiple positions coming out of Utah's the reason why they drafted him in

the second round. He's an eager learner. More importantly, there's enough veterans in place that he's going to be able to soak up knowledge from so that he's able to contribute at some point. I'm excited about Eric Roll as a player. I really am, Like so many things would be excited about. Now, let's talk about this defense for

a second, especially the first team unit. So many change that linebacker, so many changes in the defensive back, and all of a sudden you look at the defensive line and they were outstanding against the run once again, something that they had been in the past. Well, it was prevalent once again on the Sunday afternoon Benny Logan. I thought it was an absolute monster in the middle of

the field. Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, third, normal cells. But I thought Logan came out with a purpose and really was strong against the run, against the rushing attack of the Indianapolis Colts. For the brief time that he was in there. I absolutely agreed a couple of series that that first yearner was out there, that D line set the tempo and the tone for the way that this defense was gonna play today. Gave out one hundred yards

rushing to one running back last year. That's Frank Gore did not give up a hundred yards rushing to a single running back all of last year. One of the best run stuffing defenses in the league. That's picked up in the first game, and it starts with those big boys upfront. I thought Benny Logan, Fletcher Cox said, Thornton came out and set the tone. Allowed those young linebackers because you gotta remember we didn't have Michael Kendricks or

Damiko Ryan's in there today. You had young guys out there for the most part, and it allowed those young guys to play fast. Our line, our D line, is going to really be the tone set of for our defense every week. They're certainly gonna need it to with all the changes there in the back two levels of the defense. The Eagles coming out on top thirty six to ten over the Indianapolis Colts, we are going to

hear from head coach Chip Kelly. We will bring you his life press conference in just a little bit, and also the sideline reporter for the Eagles Network telecast that most of you just watched, Dave Spidero. He's gonna give us a live look at exactly what he saw from his unique badge point in just a little bit here on the show as well. But you talked about the first team units, let's look at the offense. Mark sanchez accuracy a little off today, but the receivers more than

made up for it in my estimation. Yeah, no doubt about it. And that's why it's a combination. It's a tandem. You know. Sometimes the quarterback is gonna put nice softballs out there for wide receivers to catch and he'll make them look good. But what's often going to happen because quarterbacks have defensive linemen in their face, they're gonna be

underdurest at times. You aren't going to get a perfect pass as a wide receiver, and the wide receiver is gonna go out there and make an exceptional play to help his quarterback out. Now, I thought early in the game, Mark Sanchez a little amped up, maybe a little excited first game action, real live action. So he missed a couple easy throws. But I also like the way he settled down on the second series, came back and was able to make those same exact throws and connect with them.

So the great thing about watching that first unit out there is the design of the offense. You saw that there were wide open receivers running and the quarterbacks more often than not in this offense will hit those guys. Now, Like, how much would you not want to have to face a running back like Ryan Matthews. He would just runs with such violence, with such anger there out of the backfield. Well you know what I mean. Big running backs, in

my opinion, are often the best ones to face. Just those little shifty guys like Darren spros that are hard to like corral and tackle. But a guy like Ryan Matthews, who has good speed and good size, he's a guy that's gonna be he wanted to. He'll make you think when you come up to tackle, you know, is he gonna hit me with a joke? More, where is he gonna try to run me over? And next thing you know, you're embarrassed as a defender. I like what he looked

like in his limited action early in the game. I think he's gonna be a big part of the offense. I thought the offensive line did a good job, particularly Jason Peters in the time that he was in there opening up holes for those running backs. Ken Yan Barnard looked well too, running the ball out the offensive line.

Andrew Gardner got the start there at right guard, so that was the one piece I think everyone been waiting to see is who's gonna win that right guard battle, And it seems like from the snaps away they were divided. Today It's either gonna be Andrew Garner or John Moffatt, who took most of the reps once Gardner came out of the game. So now let's send it to Lincoln Financial Field, where Eagles Network sideline reporter and insider Dave

Spadaro brings you his thoughts under Eagles big win. Well, it was almost a perfect day for the Philadelphia Eagles thirty six to ten. They did so many things right. The offense moved the football four hundred yards game, the quarterbacks doing a great job, Sanchez leading the way for a touchdown, Tim Tebow coming in at the end, and between those two, Matt Barkley did a really good job throughout the first half, so from an offensive standpoint, solid,

the offensive line did an outstanding job. The running game was strong. Ryan Matthews early on showed his power between the tackles and the wide receivers, showing how deep they are house talented that they can be on the defensive side of the ball early start, a little struggle early early, but for the most part in an outstanding effort. Four takeaways, Ed Reynolds a remarkable fourth quarter to stake his claim for a job on the fifty three man roster. And

the pass rush just terrific. We expected that upfront from a really good group. The run defense just terrific. Special teams, I guess Cody Parkey the only blemish here with miss pat and the miss field goal opportunity, but he still had three field goals of more than forty yards. And of course Kenyon Barner, what can you say about his performance a ninety two yard punt return as well rushing touchdown and most important of course, guys, they come out of this game with no injuries, so I can tell

you the enthusiasm on the sideline was infectious. This is the kind of way to start the preseason that gives you great energy and enthusiasm and build team camaraderie with the Baltimore Ravens coming to town for some joint practices, and then next Saturday right here Lincoln Financial Field, the Ravens and the Eagles preseason game number two. I still

say Barkley's ahead of Tebow. I still say that at right guard it is Andrew Gardner's job to lose, although John Moffatt playing well in his time on the field. Back to you at the Novacare Complex, Dave, great stuff, Thank you very much there for the insight. So Eagles winners thirty six to ten over the Indianapolis Colts. They get off the great start to the preseason. We're waiting to hear from head coach Chip Kelly, who should be

addressing the media any moment now. But we also got to see a couple other quarterbacks, one Matt Barkley and of course Tim Tebow. I thought Matt Barkley came out great. I mean, listen those those first couple of passes he through the one to Jordan Matthews. This first pass, Jordan Matthews had coverage underneath and coverage over top. That was not a big window. That was a very tiny window

there to get that ball in there. And I thought Matt Barkley threw a very good catchable ball to Jordan Matthews coming across the middle, and then he was able to hit Miles Austin deep down the left hand sideline. Miles Austin, the veteran whom he hadn't heard a whole lot about during training. Cat. But you're throwing the ball his first opportunity, he goes up and he makes a play. So I thought the quarterbacks looked well for the most part in this offense, and when obviously when Tim came in,

the offense was a little more choppy at times. But here's what I'll say, Tim Tebow is gonna flourish when you put him in advantageous situations. Third and fifteen, second and twenty, third and twenty. That's not Tim Tebow. That's that's It's gonna be more difficult for Tebow to make plays when he's facing that type of down and distance. But you're give him second and five, you give him

third and four, third and eight, something that's manageable. I believe Tim Tebow can move to football, just like he showed us. At times, it's difficult for any quarterback to pick up second and fifteen, third and twenty when you get behind scheduleist Chip likes to say by getting penalties on first and second down or having negative plays. I thought all three quarterbacks giving their chances to make place,

they made plays for the most part. Yes. Indeed, the thing about Matt Barkley is he was the quarterback in this offense who had the most experience, So you expected him to look the sharpest, the crispest, and it seemed like that. He makes the read, he gets rid of the football, he knows where he's going with it, he's decisive, just gets the ball in out very quickly or tebow. He's so probably learning the ins and outs of this offense. He's at the point where he doesn't have that first read.

All right, it's not there. What am I doing with the football? Do I pull down? Or am I trying to find the second or third read in the progression? So I think what we're doing right now is now send it over to Lincoln Financial Field head coach Chip Kelly, addressing the media following the Eagles victory, bag, Yeah, we just we knew we were gonna go out try work him out. A little bit pre game and then get ready to go play the raven. So a couple of guys we kept out like that, he's still your calling

them already. Now he's fine, should be going on Tuesday. I should be the same for holding Bradford bag that you know, you're a gun. You're right whatever you want. I really don't care what you guys right to be honest with you because I said I held him back. I just answered that question. So a lot of guys showed up, a lot of first year guys. Thick set a nice block on the front retirement. Can you just talk about the contribution you might see from the you know,

the rookies this year. The previous two years didn't see a whole lot from a lot of guys. You know, the one thing you don't know about any of those guys or what are they gonna be like when until you get him into a game. And that's the encouraging thing. Sometimes the guys stand out in practice, um that's been history, and then all of a sudden you get into a game and they're not the same player. And then other guys that weren't so good standing out practice stand out

in the game. But I you know, just from before you get a chance to look at the film. Some of those guys I thought, really step up and made some players. Eric Row had a big fumble cause on one of those receptions on the crossing, Now came in from behind, did a great job of stripping them. So um Nelson made you know, obviously a big catch on our bench and on their bench and you know, turn it into a touchdown and we had another catch. Um you know, so we're excited about those guys. Uh, it's

just one step for us. But we feel like we've got a lot of really good film to teach off of, you know, officials, legitimate down and distance, all those things, a lot of good situations that we can Uh, we can get a meeting room with those guys when they come back on Tuesday and and and really start to grow. This team would have the starting secondary. I mean, they give up. It's everything it's not. And again it's not just a secondary, it's what type of rush should we have.

You know, did we generate Russia on on them on those plays. There's a lot of different combinations when it comes to past defense. But we'll look at everything. You really look like the ball pretty quickly. Matt. Yeah, tim you know ran for a touchdoame yah? Is there one particular set of skills that you know they got to be able to do it all? But you also have to look at who's in with who, you know what

I mean. I think there's a different set of receivers that we're in where Matt than than when Timmy used than Timmy had and then you know, really a different line at times. So there's you know, you gotta have to take some of that into There's a couple of those where Timmy held the ball and it looks like why is he doing that? Well, the receiver in the wrong route. You know, he's looking for a receiver to

run a shalla across. We didn't get any show across, so you know, we don't we don't get that a lot in training sessions where if the receiver doesn't run the right route, and now what do we do. So there were a couple of bus out there. We have some young receivers that we think are going to be good, but we three of those guys just got here about a week ago. So there were a couple of mental mistakes. Um whether it was up front or at the receiver's plot. Who thought I thought he did a real nice job.

You know, we screwed up a little bit on that one naked where it ended up getting tipped, But that guy should have been blocked. You know, our tight end was lined up too tight. We should have had a pin block on him and got him to the corner and given him an opportunity to throw it. But I thought, I thought he did a really nice job out there. Uh, hit a couple of high throws. You know, I think he's got to get his feet set a little bit. But I thought we played with a good empo um.

You know, as a group, we were all on the same page. You know, guys were clicking and guys were hitting. But uh, I'm sure he'd want to a couple of those throws back just because they were a little high. Now, I did not talk with Cody during a guy. I just talked to Flipper, and now I would I will see the film and get us traightened out, you know, playing a different player this year, we could do this, uh birthday. You know, he's a year older. I think

it's it's not all new for him. I think he's you know, been there, done that, This isn't This isn't his first preseason game, this isn't his first training camp. I just think there's a you know, there's a kind of a common sense around him. I think, you know, he's he's got a better grasp. But what we're trying to do um and he's really showed up in our training sessions and he showed up today, So we're encouraged with his growth day suppressive. I just think there's just

a different he's carrying himself in a different manner. You know, he was excited about going out and playing in the football game today, So you know, we're excited to see where this goes, bringing in some competition for It's not why now we're not. I mean, he was an All Pro Bowl kicker last year. He missed in his first exhibition game. He missed an extra point in a field goal,

so he hit three from forty two. So I wouldn't I wouldn't put the panic button right now, so miss a couple of is he battling anything mentally right now? He made a mistake in practice. I mean, let's not go crazy. Now, he's pretty good kicker, so hey, he's a Pro Bowl. I've seen Pro bowlers miss kicks. I've seen Adam. Adam's a Hall of Fame kicker. I've seen him miss kicks before too, So let's let's just not hit the panic button on coded right now when we're

the first preseason games down. You great catch and a great run after? Is that when you've seen a lot of Dori camp, Yeah, I mean the one thing with Nelson when he gets the ball in his hands, he's real explosive, you know, so you're you're you're anticipating run after the catch with him, and that's what, um, you know, one of the things we knew about him because you could see it when you watch him playing college. He

did that a ton in college. He was also a great returner in college, so you can see him when he has the ball in his hands. He's a he's a dynamic player. And I think what you saw today is kind of what one of one of the reasons we drafted him. So h the first team friends when they were out there against you just a little bit. I mean, I wouldn't put way too much into it.

You know, just how many series you know, Andrew came out I think actually in the middle of that second series and Matt came in, so, um, there's there's tape for us to coach off of, and that's really what we're looking at. But we're not you know, making any predictions or you know, any lofty goals in terms of coming out of this. It's just it's just one step. It's our first preseason game. Was a good opportunity to go against another team. You get the live tackle to

the ground. Um, we did miss a couple tackles on the defensive side of the ball, and we need to clean that up. You know, that one touchdown run, we should have had the back down, you know on the on the long third down that they ran in for the touchdown. But um, you know that's those are things that um, you know, Corey and the other coaches will get a chance to get into film room with those guys and and coach him up off of it. Yeah, he was Yeah, what about this progress? I thought I

thought he showed up today. You know, he showed up. Not only there's two interceptions, had a big kick on the big tackle on the kickoff return. After that late in the game, I think he's he's uh, you know, he's a guy that's pushing to to to make the fifty three man roster, and I'm happy for it right now. I think he's, you know, part of it. The big We put a big emphasis and how you playing the game?

You know, it's not just our training sessions, is how do you play when it's live, full go and let's go. And I thought that did a nice job and put him put himself in a pretty good situation coming out of game one. So we'll see how he grows from the spot he's obviously for gredit it would be important one if you have one of those seats, he's go down into the nickel. Um, how do you see that? I mean, woof, he hasn't playing and um, how do you see that? Side? Who's ever players are the guys

we evaluate. So that's that's what the deal is. You know, we've got a deadline coming up when um, you know, right after that Packers game that we got to make our cuts, and then we got another deadline coming up immediately right after the Jets game. We've got to make our cuts. But it's got to be based on who's playing and who's out there and who's who's who's uh, who's putting on tape for us? So n Ed said, a really nice camp. You know, I think he's he's

a lot like Marcus year two. You know, it's not all new for him. Um. He spent the entire offseason here. You know, it was here every day. Um, even when we weren't allowed to be with him until April twentieth, but he was in the building working on his own and I think it's showing right now. So receiver, I would do a couple of mistakes, you know, a couple of miss assignments in terms of routes. I thought Miles had a big Catchhair did nice job boding the receiver

showing you you know, wiley veteran. A lot of guys maybe would have outrun the throw. Knew it was a little bit behind him, so slow down, let the defensive back kind of hang on his back, and then they made the catch over his shoulder. Jordan made a big catch coming across the middle, So you're happy with him. Nelson obviously was someone that kind of showed up today. So, um, I've been pleased with our receiver so far in camp.

We did have a couple of drops today, though there's a few there, you know that we that we wish we kind of had in uh Nelson Dad to drop in front of our bench. I think Sprawlsy had a drop. We had a couple other thing. Trey May had a drop. So you know, a couple too many drops for us. But um, we'll get that corrected. Gardner and hearned him to start today. He's just rotated. It wasn't a separation.

It was just I think that's who had in there for the last day or so, So, um, it could be a new We're gonna give all those guys an opportunity before we make a decision on what's going to go on there. In the beginning, there was I think it was an aggressiveness about your team. There was a sense of competition, energy, enthusiasm. We're did not all come from in this call game to death. We got a lot of depth there, and there's a lot of guys

fighting for spots. So um, I think everybody's aware of that. You know, you don't really when like we're getting big rod Ross beach before we went out of the field, you know, but you're gonna we put a lot of emphasis because of how we train on what goes on when you get a chance to go in a game and it's live. You know, there's no excuses when you're playing in the game and you can't say, well, I would have had that guy, but you blew the whistle coach too quick, coach, or you know, I pulled off

because I didn't want to have a big collision. It was you know, this is this is live, this is real, this is going. So I think our depth has really um giving us a sense of urgency at a lot of different positions. So um, we're excited to see that, and that's what that's what we wanted from from those guys today. Corner into the puzzle here, I have to perform this like Chris, but we if he continues to perform like that, we have to fit him in. So we'll you know, we're gonna find a way to keep

the best fifty three players here. But you know, it's it's when you give you when you get an opportunity to do something, you step up and do it. So it's not a you know, well, if I had my chance, A lot of everybody gets their chance. A lot of guys played a lot of football today. So um, he continues to play like that, then he's gonna put himself in a mix last in the preseason and they got hurt him. You talking about the difference between him last year and this year the Sea, Well, I thought he

did well in the preseason. We did get him late, and then he got hurt in that last preseason game, so you know, we really it was it wasn't a decision we could make in terms of keeping him on the fifty three. He was hurt, so we waved him injured. Then we had an opportunity after got healthy to bring him back and put him on a practice squad. So, um,

I think he's taken advantage of his opportunities now. So talk about receiver drops or Sheep Bailey seeing the catch, Yeah, yeah, two tough catches bad and I want to traffic just you know what kind of had And he's been really good. You know, that's the one thing about Rashid. He's got outstanding hands. You know, I don't he may not be as fast as some of those other guys, but I

think he's a really good route runner, you know. And you talk about the jump that he made, you know, coming from Rocksborough High School and playing at Del Valle and then all of a sudden he's playing in the link against the Indianapolis Colts. You know, that's a pretty big jump for anybody, and I was anxious to see what his response would be with you know, if there was any kid or any player on our team that could be a little starry eye, it would have been him.

But he wasn't. He was out there, it was all about business. Wanted to make plays and made a nice catch on our sideline on a you know, a key out route. Then that catch he made coming down on the on the steam ball from Timmy, and I thought Tim put it the only place he could put it because it was really good coverage. But for him to come up with it was a was a big time catch on his part. So did you like, I'm watching tim tebo. I mean it seemed like he can you know,

he's able to run. He was able to you know. I like how Timmy threw it. You know, I thought, you know, that's the big concern with everybody coming in is is has he really changed? And I think, is uh, he's sequencing better. You know, he's got his feet underneath him. And when guys ran the right routes and he had an opportunity to throw the football, I thought he threw the ball really well. Philadelphia Eagle dot com Chris McPherson alongside Ike Reese. We're going to head to the phone lines and welcome in Havon from DC Tavon. What's your take on the Eagles win to start the preseason? Hey, what's going on? The first thing I want to say, it's preseason you know, I try not to get too excited, but you know, we really did our think total team effort, you know, all around, offensive, defensive. You know, we really did our thing out there. Man, I want to salute to my boys.

I just can't wait to see Sam get on the field, man. You know, yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, the fact that the offense was able to put up thirty six points today really without using their first team is out there very often. I think it speaks really to the depth of the team. More importantly, this is Chip's third year with his system, and you can tell that the players are a little more familiar with what the coach wants.

We saw multiple formations. The offense didn't look like it missed a beat after that first drive when they went three and out. From that point on, I thought the offense looked pretty good for the rest of the day. We'll look at the quarterbacks you have coming in. You are start with Mark Sanchez, who's won in the NFL. You have Matt Barkley, former fourth round pick who's been in the offense for a few years, and then now you have Tim Tebow coming off last. And then you

look at the depth at wide receiver. You know, you guys like Miles Austin coming in there with the second team unit, so a lot of production from all over the place. So now one player who I know you wanted to talk about was linebacker Marcus Smith. So a second year player. Now he was I think one of the players completely in the spotlight coming into this game because last year didn't see much of him on defense.

I think we would joking about this off camera. He might have played more snaps in this preseason game today than he did all of last season in the regular season. And you could tell by how hot it was out there in South Philadelphia Lincoln Financial Field today that he was feeling the heat by the end of the game.

Oh well, I sure don't miss those days when you're in that first preseason game as a backup player and you're on all four primary special teams units, and you know the first team is only going to be out there for eight to ten plays and you have the rest of the game. So I don't miss those days. And Marcus Smith was out there sucking win. But here's what I like when I saw about Marcus Smith out there,

he didn't give up. He did not give up. I saw him around the football an awful lot, particularly early in this game, whether it was in the passing game covering tight ends Kobe Fleiner, or whether or not he was playing on the edge of the line of scrimmage trying to set set the deepense and make sure you turn the ball back in. So I know he only gets credit for one total tackle the day, but I thought I thought he was around the football an awful lot today, I really do. He seemed to be a

little more ashore of himself. He looked a little more aggressive. Like I said, I had like my binoculars honed in on Smith just to watch him. Because here's the thing. One of my concerns what the team is at the Brandon Graham and Connor Barwin. There isn't much depth there at that outside linebacker position. So Marcus is a former first round draft pick that they're gonna need to step up at times and give Connor Barwin. And uh did

I say Trent Coley. I mean to say he was on the field today too for a brief an give those guys, Give those guys a little bit of a break, just like Brandon Graham was able to do for Trent Cole and Connor Barwin last year. Marcus Smith needs to be that third linebacker for those two guys certainly a huge role for the Eagles. Of Phil Graham played about fifty percent of the snap so you look at him, he's got to make that jump where he's going to be out there playing close to a thousand snaps for

the season. Now, Smith, who played fewer than one hundred for the entire season, now has to get to that fifty percent range or so or you're looking at him at least to be the guy. Now, what are the three main things that they asked the outside linebackers to do. You mentioned they have to set the edge. He was able to do that at times. You saw the pass rush, he was able to stunt to get to the inside to put some fresh on the couples. And last, but not least, you want to ask him to drop back

into coverage. He was able to do that at Louisville. So that's why you envisioned a smooth transition to the NFL. Well, he went against a very athletic head and Kobe Fleiner today of the cult and was able to acquit himself nicely.

So on all three of those aspects, I thought Marcus Smith showed tremendous improvement, and like you know this that going from that first year where especially you're the first round pick, you know, everybody's looking at exactly where I think Bill Davis coined the term, you know, having coping mechanisms better suited better, you know, able to deal with that going into your second year where the pressure's off of you a little bit because of maybe some of

the perceived disappointment, but nonetheless now you have your chance to go out there and just play ball the way you know how. Yeah, you know, listen, Marcus, Marcus and mab paying needs to pick it up as far as his aggressiveness here there, certainly. So we're gonna bring in the fourth man of our crew, NFL Film senior producer Greg Cosell, who's gonna do a little All twenty two breakdown. We're gonna go back to the offensive side of the ball and look at Mark Sanchez making a connection to

Riley Cooper. It's a staple of the Eagles offense. Nothing flashy earlier the game, but it's something that you're gonna see plenty of throughout the course of the season. In Chip Kelly's third season. Now is the Eagles head coach. I think you're going to see more and more of his expansive, speed tempo offense. And I thought the second play of the game was really instructive, and I want to show you that against the Colts. What you're going to see here is something we see a lot from

Chip Kelly. It's a two by two stacked set. You can see that two receivers stacked on each side of the formation. Now, what they're also going to do here are the Eagles, is they're going to do the normal read option mesh in the backfield. This is something they do on a high percentage of their plays. So if we clear the screen right here and you run it a little bit, you'll see what happens. Freeze it right here,

perfect example. Here's the mesh right in the backfield. Okay, Now what's going to happen Because there's no one on the end of the line because that defensive end right here has gone down inside to play the running game, the zone run game. Sanchez is going to take the ball and come outside right here. So let's clear this screen and you're going to see that as Sanchez moves out. Now, stop it right here. The reason Sanchez starts to throw the ball is you'll notice this linebacker right here, and

this is exactly what Chip wants. He wants to force a defender to be wrong by the design of his play. So that linebacker is now reacting to Mark Sanchez running the football as part of the read option, so he's now removed as a past defender. This is critical because now what do you get on the outside. You get two receivers and only one defender. The play now has worked. This is exactly what people talk about when they talk

about packaged plays within the Chip Kelly offense. Clear of the screen, you'll see Mark Sanchez throws it here to Riley Cooper and you get a very good gain. This was the second play of the game. You gain a good nine yards. Beautifully designed play, a package play with really about three or four different options within the same play. This is what Chip Kelly does offensively. It's very, very difficult to defend because it forces defenders to be wrong.

Thank you very much, Greg. Now we're going to bring him on in just a little bit to look at one of the key plays during the touchdown drive that Matt Barkley led, The one that resulted in a nine yard nine yard touchdown run by Kenyan Barner, who also had a sweet pump return as well ninety two yards take it to the house late in the first half, which really put the game away. So what we're gonna do now, take a quick commercial break on the other side,

we wanted to jump in on the conversation. Two one three, two zero five one seven zero is the phone number, and we will have that and much more come up here on the postgame show presented by Rico. You know, we were talking about a lot of the second year guys, Jillen Watkins we saw out there with the first team Nickel defense. We

talked about Marcus Smith as well. How about Ed Reynolds stepping up the safety at Stanford who spent last year on the practice squad. Two interceptions certainly making a case where it's a very crowded field right now at safety, and yeah, when you're talking about secondary players, really the only way if you're gonna make a splash is about making plays on the ball, either you're dislodging of the ball from a wide receiver or you're out there catching interceptions.

And for air Reynolds to be around the football as frequently as he was today, say, he's opened eyes of a lot of coaches. I know they drafted him here last year and had high hopes for him, but unlike a lot of rookies, they struggling their first year just to get acclimated, just to catch up to the speed of the game. And he certainly looks like a different player this year compared to last year when he was

a late graduate as well from Stanford. The OTAs couldn't get in and you could tell this year he's been here the whole off season. And again, when you're around the football as much as he was today, you're gonna catch a lot of the coaches attention. So what happens at this point, like Chip Kelly's gonna take this realize there are some great things he can take out of it. There's some not so good things, some teaching points, I

think is a phrase he used. What's gonna happen when the team reconvenes as an overcare complex on Tuesday for those first said meetings. In the first training session following the game, Yeah, you know, and I guarantee you Chip will harp more on those teaching points, those negative players that may have occurred throughout the course of his games. Then he will spending time patting his players on the back, telling them how great of a job they did, because

all coaches want to do this time a year. It's get their players better, find things that are teachable, that are coachable, and I'm pretty sure there's enough players out there, whether it's from the offensive lines, protection, whether it may have been from coverages that weren't ran as precise as they were supposed to be. The coaches will nitpick. This is where listen. This is where a player like Aaron Reynolds will say, well, I got more Mindussies than I

knew positives. I thought I played a great game, you know, And it's it's for the purpose, the sole purpose of trying to keep you focused and keeping you hungry to come back in the next game. And finding things that you can continue to get better at. When you have a blowout like today's game, the easiest thing for players to do is to think, well, we did everything the coach is expected of us. It should be a nice, relaxed day and practice come Tuesday. The next time we

come back. All the coaches are going to be happy we blew the Indianapolis coach out. No, that's not what coaches coach for it. They coach too correct, so even when there isn't something wrong on a particular play, they'll find something wrong on that particular play just so that they can coach. And it's a good trait to have as teachers because you want your students in this case. In this case players, you don't want them to get complacent.

It's still a long way to go before that first game, and a blowout game like this, it's very easy for players to start to feel themselves and think that they have arrived, as opposed to remain in Hungary and getting ready for the Baltimore Ravens that'll be in here what Tuesday Wednesday this week. So the other series that joint practices in the next Saturday is the second preseason game for the Eagles against those Ballmore Ravens at Lincoln Fancial Field.

But first we're gonna go back to yet another All twenty and two piece, Matt Barkley connecting with second year wide receiver Jordan Matthews. Another staple of the Eagles offense that fans can expect to see throughout the course of the season. Great co Sell breaks down the All twenty two. I want to show you a staple play off Chip Kelly's offense. We saw it last numerous times. We saw it for touchdowns last year, and I can remember it in at least three or four games. It's a really

interesting concept. And what we're going to start with here what do we see. Of course, this is Matt Barkley. He's in the shotgun. We have the back offset to his left, so you're going to initially see the zone run action right in the backfield here going to the right side of the formation. Now, let me show you exactly what the route concept is. It's a basic three level stretch concept or flood concept. You might have heard that term. You're going to have the outside receiver run vertically.

You're going to have Jordan Matthews here, the crossing route. He's the intermediate receiver, and then you're going to have the tight end right here run the short route. So you have a vertical route, and intermediate route and a short route. That's the three level stretch. Those are the three separate levels. So let's clear the screen and start the play and you'll see exactly what we're talking about. If you take it right to about here, this is perfect.

You're going to get boot action to the left with Barkley. He's going to roll out here, away from pressure, away from the zone, run action, away from the flow of the defense. Really well done. We saw the vertical route here, so what do you have. You get exactly what you want. You get Jordan Matthews right here, matched on a linebacker who initially reacted to the run action, so you get the one on one matchup across the field that you want.

Beautifully designed. Let's clear the screen and now you can see the play as we let it run. And what I loved here was Barkeley. He turned his body, set his feet, made a beautiful throw to Jordan Matthews. As I said, a staple play in the Eagles passing game. Boot action to the left, the quarterback getting his body turned and a great throw by Barkeley to Jordan Matthews on the mismatch. Thanks Greg. What are you gonna be talking about on the air tomorrow? Mike and Nike Show

ninety four w ip T two now to the two now? Yes, no, act three hours wasn't enough, No extra money, just an extra hour. I think I can get that off on these everyway. I got thought of my chest. No, but we'll be talking about obviously this game. There's so much to get into with this game, the quarterback play. I thought there were positive things that all three guys did

out there. Obviously t Bow. We'll talk about t Bow many and we'll get into a well, the very the fact that he did some positive things and there are some things that he needs to work on. But here's what I'll say about Tim Tebow. The last time I've seen Tim Tebow two years ago, I didn't think he belonged in the National Football League at all. There's nothing that I've seen thus far since he put on a midnight green back in the spring. It says he doesn't at least deserve a shot at making a team. He

looks like an improved thrower. Then what he looked two years ago where he looked robotic throwing the football, and then ken Yon Barner. I think he's like an unsung hero today because he had to shoulder the load of carrying the football for the running game, and then we saw what he was able to do as a pump returner. What was that ninety yards? Ninety two yards he took that ball back? How about Dave Phipps still has the

best special teams in football. I mean, we didn't talk about special teams all off season, and I see why we still have the best unit in the league. So there's a little bit of that the breakdown, and then you know, we'll nitpick at some things like why didn't DeMarco Murray play you know, stuff like that preseason game. No, but I need to keep callers calling up to the show, so I'll pose the question, that's the weather exactly? Yes, yes, you know it is this preseason. This will carry us

over to the next game against the Baltimore Ravens. The fans are excited about this team, so we break down every facet of the team that we'll be breaking down, chips, play calling, it's that that really mattered to a whole lot. But the fans are so in tune to what's going on with this ball club. They want to break down every facet and you know what's next, Sam Bradford. That's going to be the discussion all week long here. Yeah, yeah, And I'm ready to see, aren't you? These I Greece,
