Let overreaction season be a game. Welcome to the postgame show for his inn and by Rico. I'm Chris McPherson alongside former Eagles linebacker Ike Reas. Yes, the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots by a score of thirty seven to twenty. Let's calm things down a little bit. It is preseason, after all. Not what you wanted to see out of the Stars tonight, but still some good things to take away. But overall, like your big picture thoughts and what you saw from the Eagles this evening,

I mean some good things obviously, some bad things. And I know Coach Peterson once he gets a chance to look at the fan, even when he gets a chance to speak on it. Coaches, they are perfectionists, right. You know Doug talked about prior to the game cleaning up a lot of the sloppy Pelly, the turnovers, the sacks, the penalties. More importantly, I think some of those things still remained in the second game. I think positives you

can take out of the game. I thought Nate Sutfield played better this week, pressed in the in the player a little bit sooner with Nick going out early in the game, But I thought he handled it pretty well. I thought Shelton Gibson for the second week in a row, you know, opportunity to play out there at the wide receiver position, couple guys down, made the most of all of his opportunities to night. When the ball was thrown to him, he made plays, even had a nice kickoff

return in the first half as well. You know the things they got to get better at, obviously his pass protection. You know, this is pretty much the line, the offensive line that played in the Super Bowl, and the way this offensive line played down the stretch. They really were the unsung heroes of why the offense had so much success late in the year last year. And for them to come out not just last week, but this week

as well and not really have things short up. The good thing is this preseason, a couple weeks of practice into this thing. They got a few weeks before you got to get ready for Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night to open up the season. Certainly things that can be cleaned up. No major injuries to night, A couple of tweaks with some gods and hamstrings and things. Pretty sure they'll let us know the extent of some of those injuries.

But all in all, I think when the coaches look at the tape to night or the video tonight on the way home, they have a lot that they can throw at these players next week to let them know we're not there yet. Forget about what you're reading, forget about what you're hearing about last year. This is a new year, and we still got a lot of work to do in order to be where we want to

be at the end of the season. That makes you wonder how much did the Patriots look forward to this game to say, you know what, you guys, be this in the Super Bowl. It's not going to be revenge per se, but we're gonna take it to you tonight. And they certainly did. They brought the energy, the aggressiveness. They were more physical than the Eagles tonight. They were more disciplined than the Eagles tonight, you know, and they

out executed the Eagles tonight from top to bottom. So last week against the Steelers, you felt pretty good because the starters on both sides of the ball came out playing pretty well. Well tonight that wasn't the case. The Eagles go off to a sloppy start and were never able to get any traction going whatsoever. But like you talked about the offensive line, I think really we're looking at the tackle position, the left tackle position with big

the hollopol of body. YETI struggling tonight. You know at the one sack that he allowed at Adrian Clayborne, where Nick Foles went to throw the football, the ball was fumbled and it was returned by the Patriots for a touchdown there. That's one thing that you're surprised to see because Vyeti played so well, especially in the playoffs. As you mentioned, the cohesiveness of this unit was so strong down the stretch and that's the reason the Eagles succeeded.

It was intriguing to see the way things unfolded tonight. But to me, it's a blip on the radar to speed bump in the road. It's something the Eagles, like you said, can learn from and move forward as they get ready for their final two preseason games. But you do have to remember you're expecting Jason Peters to be back in the lineup. It'll be interesting to see whether or not he plays in the preseason to shake off some of the rust since he hasn't played at all

since last October. Yeah, I'd be surprised if he's out there, Cemac. I think Jason Peters in the league in his fifteen season, future Hall of Famer, has nothing to prove as long as he's getting the reps out there every day in practice. I'm fine with Jason Peters. You know, he's gonna have to preserve that body so that he can be at his best. He's coming off a major injury last year, and I'm sure he wants to be around for all sixteen games plus this season. Have no issue with Jason Peters.

A little surprised that Vity seems to have taken a little bit of a step back. But what we've known about Big v through his short career is that he can go through stints of where he looks like he's a starting left tackle in this league. But then there's also a game or two where he falls into some

old habit and where he's not being fundamentally sound. That's what's a surprising to think to me, is especially there's one saccul out later in the game where you see him lunging four with his body just getting completely off bound, and like, that's what we didn't see from Viti last season. So again you get this kind of blip on the radar out of the way. Now in the preseason, you get yourself focused and harness back and ready for the regular season because Viti was such an integral part of

why the Eagles won the Super Bowl. But as Ike mentioned, it's important to remember that that's all in the past. Now, Okay, this was a good litmus test for the Eagles tonight to see the Patriots. They're gonna be one of the best teams in the league. Again, the Eagles want to remain at that high level, and they have to understand that every team is going to bring it to the Eagles each and every week. You're gonna see this type

of attitude, this type of aggressiveness. So we see there Shelton Gibson catching a touchdown pass from Nate sudfeldt Nate Sudfeld three touchdown passes on the afternoon. This is the one to Richard Rogers, a beautiful throw where Equasi put it up for grabs, put it on a dime. Here's

the one down the sidelines to Shelton Gibson. Another big pass here, just the touch that he has shown through these first two preseason games, especially on the default has been tremendous, So when you're looking for bright spots from tonight, certainly Nate's subtfelt development, especially as he had to come into emergency action after Foles came to the sidelines suffered the shoulder stream was thankfully was looked at in the medical tent, camp back out and watched the rest of

the game from the sideline. He didn't have to go into the locker room for any additional treatment. We'll hear more from head coach Doug Pearson in a little bit, but still great to see Sutfield rushed into action and being able to produce for a second straight week week two touchdowns in the first game, three touchdown passes here this evening. Yeah, I tell you, each week you get to watch Nate Sutfield more and more, you start to become a little bit more of a believer and his

skill set. You understand what the coaches in this front office scouting department, sorry Nate Sutfield, and the reason of bringing him in Washington not see this where here's one thing we're here's the thing that I love. This team is about developing quarterbacks. That's a part of the Andy Reid Tree. You know, that's something Doug learned under Andy.

They know how to recognize certain skills, set certain tools, traits that they like in young quarterbacks, and once they get them in their system, they feel like they can develop them. And he's been here the entire offseason. Because of the injuries to Carson Wentz and Nick Foles and being limited in practice, Nate Sutfield is getting a lot of reps, so he's getting more and more comfortable with the surroundings. The stage doesn't look too big for him.

He had to play last week. First time the defending champ stepped on the field. It's Nate Sutfield who's leading the squad coming into this game. They know they're going up against the Patriots. He wants to perform well, and I thought I thought he took advantage of his opportunities. Obviously through the balling awful lot. When you get behind the way to the Eagles did tonight, you're trying to

put points on the board. But when when I just watch him from a fundamental standpoint, he doesn't look like he's aboarding what the coach are trying to teach him. They're trying to teach him to be a good pocket quarterback. I remember Suthfield in Indiana, me being a former spartan. I've watched him play in college and he makes a lot of plays that are all schedule. As he's a I would say, an athlete that people don't expect to be as good as he is on the edges with

the football. And he showed you this night that he can escape and extend plays at times. But he has a big enough body to stand in the pocket and make all the throws you need him to make. And I thought he did that the night he was under siege. I mean he was getting hit from left and right. He didn't look like he panicked in the pocket, didn't throw the ball up for grabs, and that's what you

want to see from a young quarterback. Once they started getting hit, they started losing all the things they've talked throughout the week, I thought they did a great job of hanging in there, leading the troops, put some scores on the board, took advantage of some nice throws down the field where he saw guys open, giving him an opportunity to make plays. You're talking about a guy who has an opportunity to be to have a long career in this league. We'll see whether or not as a

starter or valuable back up in this league. And so I thought Nate shows some real promise to That's interesting when you talk to the players in the locker room. Lane Johnson is certainly in Nate Sealsfeldt's corner as someone who can ascend to do great things in this league. Mc collins referred to him as a possible MVP in this league. And I know that might be aboard. That's a little bit overboard, yes, but certainly you love the way that he can throw the ball on the run.

You love the way that what's important by getting these reps here is last week when he threw the one interception early against the Steelers, he didn't recognize the defense right away, was confused by it. That's something that you're gonna need to do in game action. You're not gonna be able to learn that so much in practice. Each and every week, he's been saying the same Jim Schwartz defense over and over and over again for the last

couple of weeks in training camp. He needs to see different schemes thrown at him, see what kind of blitzes and change up defensive coordinators are gonna do, and you're gonna need that in regular season or preseason game action. So it's so valuable what he's getting right now during this time, This basically basically has been the summer of Nate Sudfeld for the Eagles to see what he can be. Can he be a long term backup to Carson Wentz?

Could he be a possible developmental starter for another team? Who knows? The biggest thing is the Eagles need to get him the experience, and he is growing and learning each and every week. You look at the stat sheet, Yes, he had three touchdowns and the interception, but it was a perfectly thrown ball to Matt Jones on the run Matt Jones, it clanked off his helmet and was picked off by the Patriots defender. So certainly the interception wasn't

his fault. And you can argue the one last week to Tracks, the fall throwing the tracks shouldn't have been his fault either, So that's they laid down the film. They know where a guy's supposed to be, whether or not the quarterback through a catchable ball, or like last week, did Bryce Stregs run the right route? And was he

there when he was supposed to be there. So that's the good thing for Nate is that when the coaches break down the film, they understand exactly the time and of every play and whether or not an interception, is the quarterback's fault, was the offensive line I'm in front of him where he didn't have time to throw the ball, or was the receiver in the right place, and whether or not he caught the ball on top. I think Nate has been outstanding in the first two games of

the preseason. The accuracy is there. You love that. You love, the decision making is getting better. The mobility, the way he can throw on the run, the way he can extend the pocket, very very impressive so far. But the connection that he has with Shelton Gibson is very very special to this point. They connected on the touchdown pass. We showed you the highlight a little bit earlier. They had the deep play down the right sideline when they

were backed up in their own end zone. I mean, Shelton Gibson, you can already say that he's been the most improved player on this Eagles roster throughout the course of training camp. But the leap that he's making it's truly special to see. And when you have guys like Alston Jeffrey out, mc collins out, Nelson Aghalore out, it's great to see one of these young guys step up

to the challenge. And it's been Shelton Gibson to his part. Yeah, I realized last year Shelton Gibson couldn't get on the field too late in the year and that was a special team. Yeah, and it took him half the year to be able to be a key contributor on that phase. But as far as being a receiver coming out of West Virginia, that the passing route concepts are so much different in that spread offense they run at West Virginia versus yeah, versus what he's doing here at the pros.

So he had to learn how to play the wide receiver position at the NFL level. And when you're when you're unsure of what to do on each plate, you can't play at your fastest. You can't allow your natural football instincts to take over. And that's truly what helped hurt Shelton last year. Confidence went down, confidence from the coaches went down in him, and then your your rookie season is basically all but loss except for being able

to contribute on special teams. He's come back this year and it's clearly more confident, has a better understanding of what he's supposed to do as a wide receiver at this level. And a lot of that has to be contributed to his position coaches. Right when when when you get that individual work with your position coach and breaking down the nuances of playing the receiver position at this level, you know you can tell that he's really soaking it

all up and he totally looks different out there. I granted it's the preseason, but through two games he's gone against first team defenses. I mean he's out there against Stefan Gilmore at times against New England, pages against Devin mccordy. The touchdown. He not Devin mccordy, the brother. What's the Jason mccordy. I believe he beat him for the touchdown down there, and that that's a good veteran cornerback in

this league. So you gotta like what you're saying out of Sheldon Gibson, and for a position, it seems to have and open the spot at least until Al Shan is back healthy. Sheldon Gibson is making the case that he wants some plans to be He's a lot to be on this roster. If there were any questions whatsoever to me through these first two preseason games, he's answered

the bell, no question about that. So a special moment on the sideline after Gibson scorers touchdown, he got a little bit of encouragement from veteran wide receiver Mike Wallace. Our cameras were there to record the interaction. We'll show that to you now in our sideline sounds keep running after the same we roll every time you were winning on it. How you feel for something you do to Mike.

Great moment there on the sideline, Mike Wallace, you know, coming in as someone who's been to the super Bowl in his career, wants to finally win it and is embracing and loving everything about being a Philadelphia Eagle. Wants to have that connection with the fans. And I'm sure I was hoping to have a highlight real play tonight, had one crossing around intended for him that Nick Foles got pressured, the ball went high, wasn't able to bring it in, and of course You're not leaving the stars

out there too too long out there this evening. So let's talk about the defense a little little bit here. I'm gonna start with the cornerback position. We saw Sidney Jones working a slot to start. Avante Maddox got worked in there. But Ronald Darby, he has had a tremendous training camp to this point and showed early on how he was able to mirror receivers down the field not

get faked out by double moves. Truly, truly has made leaps and bounds in my estimation from Warria was last year to this year, just so much more comfortable and confident playing in this defensive scheme. Yeah, I'm not surprised at all. I mean, when you look at his skill set, the tools that he have, he's a starting corner in this league with the ability to be a matchup corner. I mean, he is that good. You're talking about a guy who gives you what four to three speed. You

saw him tonight. Bid on the double move because they want to be aggressive on slants, but I love the technique. That's the difference in what you saw last year. Last year when they drove that slant route they allowed that receiver to get around them as opposed to driving that slant route and forcing the receiver to come through them on the double move. And that's what he was able to do with the double move he got tonight, was

in great position, trail position, got his head around. I guarantee you, Ron Darby, I'll tell you he should have two interceptions and that that's what's expected, and I don't mind it. But he's right there in position you get past the fifth there and on both of those plays, he showed you that even if you get a step on him, he has to catch up speed to get back there and be able to break up passes. I mean, it's the reason why he was a high second round draft pick. This is a big year for him. He

knows it's a contract year for him. I think the best thing for Ron Darby is that he's had a full offseason in this defense, knowing what Jim Schwartz, Corey Land is expecting other cornerbacks, and now he can just play. I mean, he got here. What it wasn't even at this point last year. Where he got here I believe through the trade through Buffalo and then he was injured

in the first game. Then he didn't come back into like week nine, and so he was always playing catch up with everyone out there, and I don't think we got to see the best Ron Darby. I think you're gonna see that this year because he knows exactly what's expected of him. He's highly motivated, and he knows he's going to get the challenge every week of going up

against the other team's best. I think in the past with Ron Darby, I think he relied too much on his athleticism and didn't allow himself to learn the nuances the techniques of the game that would take his game to the next level. But like you mentioned, Ike, he's had the entire offseason in this scheme, and talking to him, he said the biggest thing he wants to improve is

the interception tolls. He had three a year ago, and again he only played half the season, yet that's still tied a career high for him, and he had some big interceptions down the stretch for the Eagles. The Oakland game on Christmas comes immediately to mind, but he wants to increase that toll. He knows he left a bunch on the field last year. Left him on the field tonight, So he's gonna go back look at the tape and realize he's right there in position to make the play.

He's getting the ball to the ground, which is obviously good, but you want to be great and be able to get the ball back for the offense and get those takeaways. So that's the one thing you want to see Ron Darby improve in the next couple of weeks heading into the regular season. Kenny improved the ball skills, and it's something that going back to your time here, like Al Harris, he'll who worked with guys like Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor.

Al Harris wasn't very good at ball skills when he first came into the league for the Eagles, but he improved on that and then it was a very successful a Pro Bowl. Indeed, there exactly right, and a lot of you know, this isn't anything that's new to cornerbacks. You know, they'll tell you, the old coaches to tell you it's the reason why you're playing corner instead of wide receiver. But the great thing that you can take away from Ron Darby is that he's in position. He'll

get his fair share of interceptions. Now, will he ever be a guy that's picking off eight nine passes the season. That's very hard to do for anyone. But he's certainly a guy that can have five to seven interceptions because he's in position. You talk about the three he had last year, that was pretty much in half a season. And if you just look at the two games, really this game where he played extensive time, he was in position several times to get interceptions. He's going to get

his opportunities. He knows he wants to take advantage of them. I liked what I saw from Sidney Jones. Everyone is going to see the highlight of Cordell Patterson breaking his ankles on that pass in the flat and running right by him for the touchdown, But to me, he was in position to break up the pass on a number of other occasions. Showed some tenacity in terms of getting

in the backfield to make the tackles. Very willing in that regard, and that's what you're gonna need to play in Jim Schwartz a scheme, you're you're gonna need to be able to help in the run game, and I thought he showed great support in that. So I'm very encouraged. But why I've seen from Sidney Jones in these first couple of games, because again last year we only saw the one regular season game because he had the achilles

injury just before the draft. He played in the regular season finale against Dallas, you know, showed some good things there, but had the all the off season. They gave himself healthy game himself right, and has played well in my estimation in these first two preseason outings. He just needs more planned time. He's gonna learn that when you get a big receiver like Cordelle Patterson out there, you gotta

come up to tackle him under control. First of all, know where you're leverages on defense, know where your help is coming from. And then when you get a big receiver like that, he let him make the movie he wants to make, and and you're right there to make the play. All right, We're gonna send it now to jelet Save in Foxboro. We're head coach Doug Peterson is standing by h Yeah. Um, you know number one, we'll evaluate the film, you know, tomorrow and and and make

a better decision and better judgments on that. But um, I think I think both of them would agree that there there were players left out on the field tonight, um, and something we gotta we gotta clean up and keep working. So you know, it's a great battle between those two. Um. And and we've got a couple of weeks left before we have to make these, uh, these tough decisions. But uh we'll look at the tape and and make a make a you know determination after that to see exactly

how they did play the severity of the injury. I'm sorry next case, you know. Um listen, I'm gonna wait until I speak to my doctors tonight tomorrow, UM, get a good evaluation on them, and I'll definitely keep you updated as we go. Think you know, I thought, uh, um, you know, the balls were a little high early. Um, you know, just just a little accuracy issue. But um,

you know, we had some we had some plays. I think he would want back, and we'd want back as an offense, and and we just got to continue to work, you know, And it's part of it's part of the game. And uh, we have to make the corrections, you know, this next week and then get ready for our next one. Three times he I think, well, obviously, I think it's a concerned lead wide you know, with exactly how this

is gonna get called. But you know it's it's great to see because it's it's all teaching and coachable moments for us, you know, especially the defensive side. And um, you know, we've we've got to keep educating our players, you know, on on the property technique and um, you know it's something again, well we'll evaluate the film you know, in the in the morning and and uh and see

exactly what's going on. But these are great teachable moments. Um, everyone's still trying to kind of adjust the new role, teach it and you know, coach it up when you

now it's going to be called. It's hard because you don't go live in practice either, you know, and and uh so you so it's hard to you know, you're just going off of game film, you know, uh, and try to try to coach off of that and and show these guys these plays and and continue to educate them because you're not putting your team in live situations, you know anymore in camp. Um, it's hard to really

work on it, you know. Um, you can, you can work all the drills you want, but until you're in the game, you know, when things happen a lot faster that's when you, uh, you really get to find out exactly how how your team is is progressing in that area. The plan take Nick out there regardless or had he not been hurt when he had kept playing. Um, I think if if he was healthy, he would have probably

got one more series, you know after that. Um, guys, I think had around twenty twenty one plays or something like that at the time, and I was hoping to get around twenty five with that first group. So, UM, you know, I was, I was planning on putting them, putting him back out if I if I couldn't. Nate thought Nate did some nice things. Um, I had some really nice throws, the you know, the touchdown pass obviously, the one off the goal line to backed up situation. UM,

you know, and again getting played pretty well. You know it's something um with the with the quarterbacks. Um you know, you have to go back and really evaluate the tape and and see see progressions and see reads and and uh. But I thought overall, you know, out standing here right now that he thought he played pretty well second game, UM, do you worry? Did how did Joe joeberall performance? I know there's a lot of shifting the first thing out.

But in terms of execution, um, you know, it's something we got to clean up the execution. It's not it's not crisp right now. Um, but again we got to continue to work guys who are working extremely hard, you know in training camp and you know obviously in these games, effort is there. You know, we just gotta really now these next couple of weeks focus on, uh, just the execution and being being crisp in these next couple of games. What's keeping out right now? He had a lower body

injury and just needed some rest on it. Same thing with Richard and I'll find out tonight tomorrow really when we get back and let you know. Okay, thank you media. We are also going to hear from quarterback Nick Foles in just a little bit here, so make sure stay tuned here on the postgame show presented by Rico, Doug didn't have too much to offer on the injury situation. Uh, you know, terming lower body injury. Nick Foles will be reevaluated.

It's gonna be a big weekend for the Eagles. I'm gonna go a little off the game here for a second. I because Carson Wentz, Brandon Graham and Alshon, Jeffrey, all those guys are going to be reevaluated this weekend in Philadelphia, and especially for Carson Wentz, it'll be interesting to see if the doctors will clear him to participate in eleven on eleven drills next week as they get ready for what they usually call the dress rehearsal, the third preseason

game against the Cleveland Browns. You don't know if Winch will be able to play in that game or not, but still the fact that he's more involved in team drills would be a positive sign as the team looks forward to that regular season opener on September six. Yeah, much like Jason Peters, not because of age, but just because of importance. Regardless of what happens with Carson as far as the medical evaluation moving forward, I'd be surprised if he played in the preseason, but we'll see about

next week's game. Obviously, were getting a chance to get ready here from Nick Foles coming up here in a second. Certainly interested to see how that shoulder elbow was filling after he had to leave the game a little bit early. You heard Doug say, had he not been injured, he was due to go out there for at least one more series. So he when he was out there, he didn't look great, look rusty. I think some of that

has to be expected. He's been in and out of practice as well, dealing with some muscle spas and things of that nature. Tonight would have been his first action since the Super Bowl, and so I guess a little bit of rust is expected. Just hoping that it's not anything that's long term that will keep him out next week, because the last thing you want is for neither guy to have any type of real game action before they

had to play the Atlanta Falcons in three weeks. So I thought Nick, for the most part, when he had time, made throws. But I think the rust that we saw from him is kind of expected. I think I think it should be expected. I mentioned Mike Wallace earlier. I thought the timing was a little off there again, they're

trying to get that report, get that chemistry down. There was one pass down the right sideline, which you know, if the ball was better thrown, he could have had it, should have had went on small way on a wheel route down the left sideline. I think it was his first throw the game in fact, and Yeah, it was just a little Often those things are to be expected.

And you look at Nick Foles as a veteran in this league last season, didn't play in the preseason, you know, as because of the elbow injury, and we saw what he was able to do down the stretch. So Doug Peterson talking about Nate sudfelt his performance, very very encouraged by what he's seen from him through these first two

preseason games. We even talk about Richard Davis's touchdown where he did a great job of getting the safety who was too far over to the middle of the field and Sudfeld just dropped in a dime, been between a couple of defenders to get the ball there on a

thirty one yard score to Richard Davis. So all across the board, a number of impressive throws from Sudfeld on the evening, and you're certainly encouraged by what the Eagles have at that quarterback position going forward, with Carson Wentz working his way back from the injury, Nick Foles and what he can bring to the offense, and of course Nate Sudfelt in the development that he's shown, so even before he looks at the tape coach Peterson realizes felt

a nice outing for him here in the second week of the preseason. If I couldn't touch on the defense just for a moment, obviously, that you got Tom Brady out there playing the whole first half. This is his first preseason action. Patriots suddenly wanted to get their offense going. The Eagles didn't gain playing in New England. Patriots, So I'm not completely discouraged by what Tom Brady and the offense was able to do against the Vanilla defense. The tackling. Obviously,

Doug touched on that. With the new rule in there, it's gonna take a little bit of time for all the players around the league to get adjusted to the new helmet rule. But I'll caution every fan out there who gets frustrated over the last two weeks when they see these flags thrown, it's not going anywhere. The league isn't gonna go back to allowing big hits and things of that nature. So the players will have to adjust. Eventually,

they're gonna throw these flags. They may not throw them as frequently when the regular season begins, but they're trying to set a tone for what they are expecting, and so once you put that in the player's minds as to what's expected of them when it's time to make a hit, then you won't have to worry about those counties. I thought Jordan Hicks had a great form tackle where he lined the offensive the receiver up, didn't leave with his head, led with his shoulder, made a great form tackle.

That's what they want to see more of. I just thought the Patriots came out with their leader setting the tone and it was important to them to have a good game offensively. They have a lot of questions up there themselves in New England offensively, so they were certainly

coming out looking to get some things accomplished. I'm not totally discouraged by what we did on defense because I know we're missing a few guys, and with defenses in the preseason, if you don't gain playing the opposing team's offense, you're basically out there. Yeah, exactly, they're gonna beat you because all you have is your pass rush to get to him. So when it comes to the helmet rule, yeah, your thoughts as a former player as a fan watching the game now, To me, I think it's been pretty

clear cut. I think the reference have been calling it pretty consistently, at least with the Eagles two games across the board. Ronnie McCloud, it was pretty blatant. He went down and it was almost like a technique that I don't know if this is a coach to use your head to get the ball out. It's not teach. I'm sure it was a dangerous player. That's that's what they really want out of the game. And I mean to

protect him. I mean he could have seriously that a tackle like that leading with your head down, that could lead the spinal injuries, let alone the head trauma that can come from not looking up when you're out there to make a tackle. And I'm a former player, and listen, I made my bones in this league by being aggressive, by playing through the whistle, by making tackles that are

being outlawed right now. But I'm also a parent who has a child that's playing football, and head injuries are serious, and I applaud what the NFL is trying to do because I got to look at the game through different lenses now. I can't look at it as if it's twenty years ago. You gotta look at it and have empathy and care for these players. And their safety out there, and that's what the league is trying to do. Will adjust. The players will adjust. They're good enough athletes. Just give

them time. We as fans need to need to start realizing that we're gonna have to adjust our way of thinking and our expectations when it comes to playing, particularly defense. In the NFL today, what we grew up on is not allowed anymore, and they're not going back to allowing that, no matter how loud we scream and yell and tweet about our displeasure that we can't have football the way

that we grew up on. It's a new day and age, and I'm happy it's a new day and age because we are well more informed about the serious nature of head injuries and other injuries that come with this violent sport. They can't take out all the violence in the sport, but if they can limit some of it and make it a safer game for everybody involved, I think we

can all appreciate that as football fans. So you could have adjusted your game, though, if they had the rule implemented when you were playing in the late nineties early two thousands, you you would have adjusted. You have to. You don't have a choice that point. Otherwise it's coming out of your wallet at the end of the day, so you're fortune. That's the thing. So it just it took them a little longer to do it, and now we're I guarantee in a year or two this will

be a thing of the pass it well. To me, it would have been a problem if we're seeing five six flags and there are some questionable things. I feel like the plays that we've seen, it was McLeod tonight, Jeremy Reeves tonight, pretty clear cut. They're lowering the head and they're not looking up whatsoever or and using and they're using the helmet as a weapon. And as observers and fans, we have to be fair to the officials.

This isn't a rule they made up. They're doing what the league is directly them to do, directing them to do, and they're also trying to figure out where is that line right, They're trying to figure out where they're lying at. These officials, especially the ones that have been doing it for a decade plus, they're saying to themselves, Okay, it's been a regular tackle for many, many years, and now you want me to change my view of it. And

call it. Yes, that's what the league want you to do, and that's what the officials are they're working on themselves here in the preseason. Again, I think it's something that's being overly focused on in the preseason because they want to set a tone. I think once the season starts they'll dial it back. But the more egregious ones, the ones that are obvious to everyone, they're gonna call it.

They're gonna call it, and I think they should because I think in the long run, our game is going to be safer for our kids that are coming up playing a game. You want the game to continue to grow. You want kids to continue to want to play football. You want parents to continue to allow their kids to play football because they feel safe that it's not something that's going to leave them shorten their lives. And the game is not worth that to anybody. And so that

will allow this game to continue to grow. It'll be safer for everyone and will adjust. It's just that's just what we do with human as nature were adapt. All Right, we're gonna send it now to Fox Borrow where Nick Foles it's addressing the media take questions for name. So we'll happen to your shoulder. Um, you know, I was getting ready to throw a d ball and uh, it got grabbed his I was falling through, so sort of got a little strains. So you know it was with

the trainers. Um, you know, we'll go in. I'll go in tomorrow'll get treatment on it. Um, and you sort of go from there. But you know, it feels it feels all right, feels pretty good. Um, hopefully there's no issues. No, I was just a shoulder just sort of got jarred in a funny way. Um, as I was falling through and um, but you know it feels good. We'll check it out tomorrow more thoroughly. Yeah, that's fair to say.

I mean, you know, when you're falling through on a d bow on someone grabs your arm when you're going it's it's not the best feeling. So but you know, I feel optimistic about it, and you know I'm excited to you know, get into treatment tomorrow. Just get the same moving forward. Well, when you said look further, I'll let the trainers decide. Tomorrow morning. You know, we come in for treatment, so we'll go from there and decide

what's best. Oh, it wasn't good Um. But at the end of the day, you know, it felt good to be back out there. Um, it's been a you know, just to be back on the playing field. Um, you know, getting the field for the game, being in the huddle. Um, you know I missed on some throws, but I was starting to you know, get a rhythm and get a field back. And I think that takes time. That's why we had the preseason to go out there and play. And it wasn't good enough. I have to be better.

But Um, at the same time, I know what it takes to you know, keep moving forward on The guys in the locker room knows know what it takes. So we have to hold each other accountable, keep moving. Um, look at this film improved, But I also think there's a lot of great things tonight. I think a lot of the young guys really stepped up. Um. I thought Nate did a great job of you know, going in there and you know, finding a rhythm and really letting the ball fly and show what he's capable of doing. Um.

You know, guys making plays. Um, it wasn't clean enough tonight. Um as a team, UM, we're a lot cleaner in that. But we'll get back to work and improve on all these things. Just um, you know, the plan was really just you know, however long coach Peterson wants us to play, so um, you know that's what was going and you know, unfortunately, you know, I sort of had a you know, my arm grabbed and sort of had to go through that issue. But um, you know I would have liked to put

some points on the board. Um, but you know with the starting crew, but we didn't. But you know, we'll keep improving and um, like I said, we know what it takes to get better and we just have to do it. I think everyone's made a big deal about it. Um, I don't think Tom and I think you know, there's a lot of craziness. I mean I've always respected Tom. I met Tom several times, and um, it was great

to see him. Um, you know, but like I said, I think everyone made a bigger deal because at the end of the day, you know, he's a great dude. He's a heck of a player. When the greatest of all time, and you know, it's to stay hi. I mean that's what quarterbacks do after games. Um, and everyone made a big deal of the Super Bowl. But I mean the super Bowl's chaos after so but he was nice as he always is. So, you know, I wish

in the best of luck this season. I've been played in the preseason last year, but you weren't needed until week Um, if you weren't needed in week one of not being ready, would you even find playing this little preseason? Did you want to play the last You know, I'm not even gonna go there. Um, We're just gonna you know, live in the moment and just sort of go day to day. So I'm gonna do everything I can to get back on the field and you know, hopefully practice

the first day. We get back practiced and be ready. Well, don't worry about it in the second game. About the execution. Um, we have to execute better. Um, you know, I have to actually better. Um from the quarterback position, we as a team have to execute better. But UM, you know that's where I know all of us will look at the film. UM, we'll get back on the practice field and we'll continue to improve. That's the that's the great That's the great thing about this sport is it's not

always going to be perfect. Um. It's the toughest part about the sport is you want to go out there and you want to play a clean game. You want to win the game, you want to put a lot of points on up. Um. But that's where you you really have to dig deep right now. And just you know, we're in prison, we're in training camp. We have to

continue to grow as a team. With the team's status and with Carson's availability, I'm sure would you understand if the team is a little more cautious with you because of that. Um, you know, I'm not really in a position to say I'm just gonna go out there and play whatever the you know, team decides or what they do or not. You know, as a player, we just go out there each and every day, um, to try to help this team become better and win. So that's

really all I focus on. Have you had this injury before? Uh, this exact one? No, Um, you know, I'll see more tomorrow about what's going on. But I feel really good about it. You can see that, you know after the industry if it was regular season, I mean, do you think that could have been something you could have played through and that there's no reason to try to in this scenario? Um, you know, I don't know, it's a hypothetical situation. Um, we felt like it was best just

to shut me down at that point. UM, just to make sure, you know, we give a further look, to make sure everything's okay. Um. Like I said, I feel optimistic about it. UM, So I'll find out more information tomorrow. The whole I thought I was very proud of Nate. I thought, you know, he went in and you know, it's not always it's not always easy to get a rhythm, and I think that he was really doing a good job of let him wrote downfield, give his receiver chance

when players were breaking down. He was doing what he could with his legs, but being as smart as he could, you know, throwing balls away at times. UM. I thought he played really well. I think, you know, just from the point he got here last year when he came from Washington, I think, you know, he's improved like crazy, and he continues too. So it's fun to He's like a little brother to me, So it's fun to see him go out there and sort of slinging around a

little bit and give us opportunity to come back. How much would I mean if you are able to play another preseason game and find that rhythm that you really couldn't find mean a lot. I mean, I'd be back on the plane field with the guys. So that's my goal. That's what I feel like it's going to happen. But once again, you know, you sort of have to go through the proper channels and proper protocols with all this. So I'll find out more information tomorrow and then go

from there. Awesome, Thank y'all appreciate it. There's quarterback Nick Foles saying the shoulder got jarred just a little bit, but he feels good. He will have further evaluation in Philadelphia tomorrow after the team returned from Foxborough, So cross your fingers as nothing significant whatsoever, but good that there was no ice pack or anything like that as he was addressing the media. So good to see there. So what we're gonna do that We're gonnake a quick commercial

pek dot com. Allright, as we continue to evaluate the Eagles thirty seven inch way lost in the New England Patriot in the second week of the preseason, like any other players who you think might have helped their stock coming out tonight, Well, I tell you a couple of guys that are obviously going to be in backup roles, you know, Rashad Jones, Sean Davis. I'm I'm thinking of

the safety in Miami. And Sean Davis. You know, he had a couple of good plays that he had negative plays on special teams that you can't have when you lose yards on pump returns. But it was nice to

see him get a touchdown. When I look at the tight end positions, not necessarily a young guy guy with some experience, and Richard Rodgers tight end they brought in former Green Bay packer had a nice touchdown, great throw from Nate Sutfield, trusting him up to go up one on one to make the play, and Richard Rodgers made that play. You know, two tight ends that are definitely gonna be here and that's gonna be zach Ertz and Dallas Goddard. But looking for that third guy that can

give up. You know, last year Brent Sellig, zach Ertz and Trey Burton. We ran a lot of packages where Doug likes to use three wide receivers, I mean three tight ends, especially down in that red zone area and in short yardage areas. I think Richard Rodgers did a nice job of at least increasing his chances a band on a team. To me, I think he's the third

guy because he's that reliable veteran. We're all expecting Dallas Gootta to come in and make an immediate impact for the football team, and it doesn't always happen at the tight end position for rookie. So you want someone who has had experience, who's had success. Hey, look at one point he was a go to guy for Aaron Rodgers up there in Green Bay had eight touchdowns in his

season a couple of years ago. You know, it was kind of more on special team's duty and a backup tight end in the last couple of years there up there in Wisconsin, but here in Philadelphia. Look just be a reliable, trusted guy. And it seems like throughout training camp he caught everything his way. It was not flashy. He wasn't standing out like zach Ertz and Dallas gott It per se. But Richard Rodgers was out there making plays each and every day on a consistent basis. Knows

the offense will help out in special teams. That's what you're looking for from that third tight end. I think Rogers is going to do a good job to bring it to the table. I actually personally like the fact that the play before, sunfel up a nice ball, for got it in the end zone one on one coverage, and the New England defender did a great job. You gotta had the ball in his hands. The New England defender got it through the cashpoint and knocked the ball

at the last second. The very next play, Suffolk goes to Rogers and Rodgers like, all right, rookie, let me show you how it's done and comes down with the touchdown. So I thought it was a nice moment there for Richard Rodgers. Unfortunately had to come out of the game with the knee injury after that, but still to me, a very formidable tight end trio for the Eagles right now. And look, some promising prospects like Billy Brown there fighting

for that fourth spot. But for me, right now, you look at the top three, it's gonna be Arts and Richard Rodgers there at the tight end position. Another government gave a shout out to here Avonte Maddox. Okay, he gave up the early touchdown to Chris Hogan, And to me, that's you're going against one of the best of all time in Tom Brady. You know, in fact, earlier this week in drills, the Eagles were actually working on that same situation with the ball lined up deep inside the

red zone, one on one receivers against defensive backs. You know, it's gonna be very difficult because you have a quick twitch receiver like Chris Hogan who can do a great job of getting open and creating separation off the snap. That's the type of situations you're gonna need to learn to put yourself in if I thought Max bounced back, well, you know, I had a couple of past breakups there,

got himself involved in the tackling quite often nicely. So overall, I'd like to see how the rookie bounced back here. So as we talked about Ronald Darby, we're talking about

Sidney Jones Vonte Max. Another nice outing from him here tonight, as he's seen his stock rise here in the last week or so, as he was starting to get first team reps in the nickel, as the Eagles have to figure out who's gonna take Patrick Robinson's place here on the roster this year, Listen as a rookie and the deepest of coordinators and trusting you to go out there

to be a part of that first team defense. I would say Avonte Maddox has certainly caught the eye of his coaches and they wanted him out there with that first team because they wanted to see how he was going to respond going up against Tom Brady, going up against Chris Hogan, Julian Edelman in the slot. You know, you can't really get a great gauge and whether or not he's ready for prime time going up against second, third,

and fourth stringers. So they wanted him out there to see how he would react in those circumstances against the best of the best. And listen, it's the first time you're going up against the goat. That's what I called Tom Brady. You're going up against the goat. You're not gonna see him scramble along. I mean scramble around a whole lot to extend plays. That's one of those plays there that as a young corner, you gotta plaster your wild receiver and Chris Hogan in the end zone and

then you gotta stick to him. At this level, the receivers they never stopped trying to get open. As long as they know that quarterback is still alive in the pocket. On the edges, those receivers are going to try to break free to give that quarterback of passing lane. Chris Hogan is a veteran volte matto, something he can learn from. But I love the fact that he didn't shy away from competition. He's out there, he's mixing it up. He's a physical guy, even though he's not a big guy.

And I think they like him in that slot because of his size, because he has the shiftiness and the quickness of a corner to play inside with some of those shifty slot receivers. But at the same time, if you're gonna be a nickel every once in a while, that offense is gonna put you in a predicament where you gotta come up and support the run. And the thing I like about a Vonte Maddox, even though with his diminutive size, he's not afraid to go in there

and mix it up with the big boys. So he's not gonna make a living making tackles in there on running backs, but you certainly have to be account for on defense if you're gonna be out there. And I thought he did a nice job tonight. The thing I'm looking at with that secondary, that's a lot of talent. Ye, somebody's not gonna be playing, so they have to figure out what they're gonna do with the guys on the outside.

Mills didn't play tonight. That allowed Sydney and Ron Darby and a Vonte Maddox to be out there without any real restriction. But when meals come back, I have to imagine he's gonna be one of those starting corners. But then you're also talking about what do you do with Darby and Jones. If Maddox is going to be your slot guy. I love the they have an abundance of talent at that position because what it does is it forces everyone to raise their level of play every day

in practice. Jim Schwartz is the type of guy. He's gonna play the best guy that's gonna give its team the best chance to win, and nothing is going to be given to you. You're gonna have to earn it. You need the depth. That's the biggest thing. As we saw last year, Royal Darby got injured in Week one.

You're gonna need to be overcome those injuries. So you need those guys behind the depth chart, and you need to give them the experience now mixing and matching with a different personnel on the field, so they're able when they get onto the field. They have the communication naturally with the other guys that may not have worked with

too much in the past. All Right, So what we're gonna do now is gonna send it over to Meryl cam Gillette Stadium inside the broadcast booth for Sports Radio ninety four w IP two of the best to ever do it, Merrill Rees and Mike Quick, both in the Eagles Hall of Fame. Let's hear the highlights from tonight's game through their voices. Mc donald out partner of the Philadelphia Eagles. All right, welcome back to the postgame show

presented by Rico. Now on the flip side, we were talking about the players who increased their stock another name I'll mention there for stock up players. DeAndre Carter, young wide receiver, had a couple of catches there. So some of those guys, you know, again, with Al Shump being out, Matt Collins being out, and Nelson Aglor being out, some of those guys raise their level of play tonight. On the flip side, any players who you were you know, want a little more from so to speak, Well, I'll

tell you Matt Jones. I knew he was gonna get an opportunity to show what he can do when Dale Smallwood got mostly got the bulk of the carries and the action in the first half, and the second half was pretty much dedicated to Matt Jones trying to show what he can do. I don't want to over evaluate what he did because he's not out there with the first team offensive line. He's out there with a backup guys. But here's the thing I'll tell you. Forget about the

running lanes that may not have been there. When you're throwing the ball out of the backfield, you got to catch the ball. You know. One of those passes that he didn't catch led to an interception of Nate Sudfield,

which I didn't think he deserved to have. You know, Matt Jones is a guy who was what mid round draft pick, third round draft pick, I believe, so you know, he has some talent, but he has to be able to hold onto the football and in this offense, you gotta be able to pass block, you gotta be able to catch the ball out of the backfield. Those are things you need to be able to do. He's a big body that I thought can add a different element to this running back backfield. You know, the thing that

we're missing with Lagarret Blunt not being here anymore. But I don't care how big you are and how physical you are from a present standpoint, if you can't protect the football and protect that quarterback when you out there, it's gonna be hard to make any team. He's gonna next week's game, It's gonna be huge for him if he gets the opportunity to carry the football. A little disappointed, but again it's only the second preseason game. He gets

a chance to come back and redeem himself. But he's a veteran that I was hoping to see a little bit more from because I actually like him as a player, I really do. I think he has a lot of as a runner uns game standpoint, and in this offense, you gotta be able to do that. You got to be able to do that in this offense, and more importantly, there were times where you had protection issues there that

he's going to do a better job in that as well. Indeed, so probably other players took a ding tonight Hollipoli body Viti struggling at left tackle, but there's no question about his spot on the team. It just need to see him bounce back next week. He did play deep into the fourth quarter. I think largely it was to kind of help him work out some of those kinks a little bit there. Taylor Hart on the other side, I thought, struggled as well at right tackle. Had to leave the

game early due to cramping. But overall, the past protection an issue from top to bottom. Tonight for the Eagles. All Right, we're gonna take our last break here on the postgame show presented by Rico. Our final thoughts as we look ahead to the first quote unquote regular season week as Eagles will prepare for the dress rehearsal against the Cleveland Browns. Stay tuned everyone. Because the Eagles training camp is a thing of the past now, they are going into the regular season route team to get themselves acclimated to what an end season schedule will be like. So the players are off on Friday. Saturday is considered an in season Tuesday.

It will be a bit of a later day as to get ready for Thursday's game against the Cleveland Browns, will be a nationally televised game and of course, a couple of weeks away from the NFL regular season opener at the Link on September six, when they raised the banner against the Atlanta Falcons, a team they'd beat in the Divisional round, kicking off what's gonna be like a very difficult schedule as the Eagles look to get back to the mountaintop here in twenty eight. Team Yeah, excited

about it. Next week, the final dress rehearsal going up against the younger, exciting Cleveland brown team that's trying to establish a new culture out there in Cleveland. Added a lot of young talent to their team this offseason. Going to get a chance to probably watch this team into the second half a little bit so to buil a

good test for our defense. They got some nice skilled players on the offensive side of the ball, with some quarterbacks that will challenge our defense on the edges because they're athletic and Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield, and I like Cleveland's defense. They've drafted a lot of players over there that'll be a good test for our offense as well to see if we can move the ball against

those guys. Because after next week and by the Western nationally televised game as well, going up against the Browns after next week, we won't see the starters, I'm assuming until they take the field against the Atlanta Falcons in three weeks from tonight. Can you believe it's already that close twenty one days away. That's what happened to see, Mac.
