A bit of a transition day here at an Ovidcare complex. Hello everyone, and welcome to Inside training Camp presented by Xfinity. I'm Eagles in Sidurday Spinner along with Chris McPherson and the Eagles have completed three days of practice, mostly rookies, a few veterans. Those veterans including Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel, Nolan, Carol. They had the day off on Wednesday and Chris the final day for the rookie class and a lot of hopefuls to make that impression they get the coaches thinking

that they deserve some more playing times. Certainly, the rookies have enjoyed the last couple of days of a chance to show the coaches whether or not they deserve more playing time moving forward. The veterans report today Wednesday. The first full team practice will be Thursday afternoon after a conditioning test in the morning, and the veterans, most of them the starters, are going to dominate the reps from

here on out. So those hopefuls who want to make the final fifty three man roster hopefully with us, a couple of days have shown to the coaches whether or not they should be able to crack in there and be able to get some extra time on the field

during practice. So a ten ten ten practice on Thursday afternoon, the team on the practice field Friday morning, and then on Saturday the pads go on, the tempo gets ratcheted up, and there will be some tackling, something we haven't seen here in Eagles training camp since the Andy Reid era. Now the Eagles making some news. Nigel Browden, Eagles linebacker arrested in Miami. It's a topic that head coach Doug Peterson addressed when he met the media on Wednesday. Well,

I can't speculate. It's an ongoing investigation, just like Nelson's situation a few weeks back. I did have a great conversation with him last night, laid out my expectations for him. You know, again, those are private conversations. I'm not gonna get into a bunch of detail on that. But he's obviously, you know, humbled by it, and he understands, you know, the situation, the magnitude. But you know, until we get further details from the authorities, I can't I can't speculate

any further. Radham reported on Wednesday he'll be on the field on Thursday, and he's expected to play a huge part in this Eagles defense as a strong side linebacker. Now, Chris who stood out for these three days of practice really hard to tell without pads, right, certainly, Yeah, if you look at the quarterbacks, you at the cornerbacks, the wide receivers. But two guys really caught the media's attention.

Those two players. Fifth round draft pick running back Wendelle Smallwood seventh round draft pick quarterback Jalen Mills, not just because he's got green hair, but because he's been around the football a lot. And Coach Peterson talked about those two players and how they've opened some eyes in these first three days of camp. You know, I was excited when we drafted him. I was excited during rookie camp when we had him in here, uh, the entire offseason program.

And he came back ready to go in a great frame of mind, and and um, you know he's gonna put himself in a position I'm hoping to help us this season. I think he's I think he's that good and um, excellent route runner, good hands, you know, uh, patient runner, and I love the fact that he's he's kind of a one cut, no nonsense type guy. He's a downhill guy, but but fast enough to separate and

create some you know, create some long runs. So I'm excited again once we getn't start getting into pads protection, how well can he protect? And and a lot of backs in college that come to this level, Um, that's something they've got to learn extremely fast. Doing a great job, doing a great job. He's he's he's a physical guy. He moves well, he's sharp, he's learning Coach Schwartz's system back there and and uh again he's he's put himself in a position to, um, you know, help us tremendously.

And again once we you know, I love I love the work these guys do in there in shorts and helmets. But again sometimes and once you get the pads on, it becomes a different a different animal. And you know, two, once we get into camp a week or so and the volume starts to increase just a little bit, you know, we'll see exactly where these kids are. But right now, Love Love where he's at. Love is his attention to detail, his aggression, and he's making plays so smallwood and mills

sure look good running around in shorts. The question is Chris, Are they for real? And how much can they contribute as rookies? I think they certainly both can have an impact as their rookie seasons progress. The key for Smallwood, first and foremost is going to be can he pass protect? You look at the running backs in the West Coast offense over the years, going back to running backs coach Do Staley himself, and in order to stay on the field all three downs, you have to be able to

help the quarterback. It's great that he can run, it's great that he could catch the ball in the backfield, but Kenny block an opposing defensive end or a linebacker. And for Mills, look, he's smart, he's cerebral, has been around the football, He's athletic. He's a four year starter at LSU, so certainly he has the football chops. The key for him will be Kenny tackle. Is he gonna be physical enough? Will he be able to, you know, maintain that leverage and not allowed the deep plays down

in this Jim Schwartz defense. So those are gonna be the things to watch for Smallwood. Can he pass block? For Mills, will the physical part of the game alter his playing style at all? Yeah? It's the little things, the technique that really makes the difference. And every time we talk about these spring and early summer sensations, the named Lorenzo Booker you brought here and we all remember what happened to Lorenzo Booker. That was a long, long time ago. So we got allowed to get to today,

including Doug Peterson, who's coming into studio next. And when we return Inside training Camp presented by x Affinity, I go one on one with a head coach to the Philadelphia Eagles. I got tickets, Metro tickets. You need a Metro ticket? Talk to me, please. I don't even know these real tickets. If you know, doesn't touch it, this leather legit. I mean, how do we really know? It looks good? Right? No, I'm paying myself. I gotta make Does the baby need a Metro ticket? I'll give her

one on me. These tickets they're not stealing your soul. You can look at them. May nobody wants to buy tickets from a guy on the street. I don't understand. I enjoyed gardening. I like to plant seeds and watch what grows. Several years ago I fell so I went to my local orthopedic doctor who performed the knee replacement. After a year of a lot of pain, I decided I needed a second opinion, so I went to Rothman

at Jefferson. As soon as the doctor operated on me, I could tell right away that things were totally different. Now I can garden again, I can kneel, and I'm just very very grateful for Rothman at Jefferson Hospital. Welcome into the studio and Eagles insider Dave Spider with head coach Doug Peterson in his first training camp as an NFL head coach. How's it going so far? It's going well. It's going well. The weather's cooperating. You know, it's a

little warm. I want it hot. I want it hot because it's gonna be a tough camp once we get the vets in here. But it's been going well for the last couple of days. Doug, what are you seeing from from the thirty eight players who've been here for three days? You know, you just want to see them. You want to just see them again how much they

retained over the summer. Um. You want to get them used to the schedule, you know, because it's a little different than what we did during the OTAs in those ten weeks in the offseason and then and then you also, I guess from the veteran quarterback standpoint, you just want to get those guys loosened up and ready to go for when the Vets, dude get in here. But overall, you know, it's it's it's not about killing these guys

right away. Get them back into football mode. And then and then when the Vets are here, they've got one leg up on them and they're ready to go. As well. You every time you meet the media, you sit there and you're very patient and accommodating in the media continues to ask questions about the quarterback position and the very specifics of it. And I want to ask you this, and maybe this is a different perspective, how do you

see this as a winning situation for the Philadelphia Eagles. Well, it's winning because we got three great, great quarterbacks in my opinion. It's also a winning situation because we got a returning starter in Sam Bradford, who who played extremely well at the end of the season as we know last year and now moving forward, we want to keep that going with Sam Bradford. Secondly, I mean we've got

a great backup quarterback. And it's again it's a win situation because in the National Football League, injuries take place, and even at the quarterback position. So having a solid backup that has had game reps and game you know, game experience is very, very valuable, much like we had in nineteen ninety nine and then and then having a young quarterback that we can develop and we can groom and grow. I mean, it's it's it's the best of

all three worlds. And we're so excited to when I say we, it's it's Frank Reich and John D. Philippo, myself getting to work with these guys. That's the exciting part of May rookie camp and now training camp. So as the outside world wonders how it could possibly work, you look at it as a great position to be in because you've got all these assets here. Yeah, and you know what, and I'm focused on one guy. Yeah, I'm focused on Sam Bradford and getting him ready for

September eleventh in Cleveland. The other two guys, you know, we're gonna get them ready to go. I mentioned the other day, I want them starter ready because if something happens, you want them to be just like the starter, just like Sam. So, you know, it is a great situation to be in. But in my opinion, it's it's a very easy situation right now because because Sam Bradford came back, he resigned as a guy that we wanted, guy that I want it, and you know, it's it's it's everything

forward with with Sam Bradford. And since he's come back, Doug from the absence, what have you seen it from mentally, physically, just a whole the ways kind of comported himself. Number one, the fact that he was able to sort of put you know, by goles by Golls kind of we kind of brushed that behind him and come back. He came back eager, he came back a little more assertive, he came back with more confidence. The conversations that he and I had were basically, you know, Sam, you're the guy,

You're my guy. I've got all the trust and the faith in you, and let's just go play football. Bottom line, at the end of the day, Let's go play football. Let's not worry about who's where, what's what. Let's just go let's just go win games together and let's do that. And and so from that standpoint, you know, his leadership ability in the huddle. You see him talking to players now as they come back after taking a rep, and those are the things you want from you from your

starting quarterback. We're gonna move away from the quarterback position to talk about some other parts of this offensive offensive line, in particular, a lot invested in the offseason in that very important group. What do you think you've seen? What you feel about the offensive line right now? Felt real good coming off of OTAs. Brandon Brooks gives us a

great depth, great starting right guard, a potential. Alan Barber is a guy that's a veteran guy that can can also play tackle for you, which which we you know, we've seen him do in the past, and he becomes a swing guy at left guard. Isaac sam allow me. He's a guy that I think is going to make a great competition at that spot. You know, Jason Kelsey, I think is one of the best centers in the

national football He's so smart. He's on a quarterback level when it comes to smarts and thinking and anticipating on the fly. And then you got Lane Johnson sitting over there, who's one of our core players who we resigned in the offseason. We felt important that we, you know, have two of those nice book ends with he Ad Jason Peters and Jason coming coming in as a veteran guy. You know, I was really pleased where they where they

left off, um, you know at OTA. So now once the pads come on, I really want to see their physicality takeover. I want to see them dominate and be able to move move the defensive line and then obviously protect the quarterback. If that'd be a great thing to watch in training camp? Will it be ones against one's offensive line defensive line? When when we get going and pads, it'll be ones versus one till we get into live situations and I typically go ones versus twos, twos versus ones,

things like that. But but for most of the camp's I want good versus good. Have you a sense, Doug, of where the offense is just in terms of learning the concepts the exist and as being in the right place at the right time. I tell you what it's it's Uh, it's further along coming out of OTAs it was. It's further along than I had anticipated. We put so much football in this spring, uh, situational football that that a lot of times we as coaches, we don't get

a chance to do. And one thing in Kansas City, I felt like we're further along this year my first year here than I was my first year in Ksey is offensive coordinator. We we've done more from a football standpoint. It's just a credit not only to the assistant coaches on offense, but to the players for retaining the information, taking it to the field, executing it and it puts them a leg up coming into camp. Is there a theme, Doug that you impart to these players each day? Is

there a theme of this training camp? You know? Not really, I just want them to understand that that that you know. I want them to be smart football players. I want to be tough football players. We're gonna be a well conditioned team and and just have fun. Let your personalities show. I mean, that's a part of this game. If you don't love playing this game, we're in the wrong business, coaches and players. And so the theme really every day

is just a we're gonna get better. We're gonna take one step whatever I can do as a coach to make to make you better as a player today. That's our theme, that's our goal, and that's what we strive to do. You have a big saying, iron sharpens, iron, competition at all positions. Do you feel like you've got that set up as camp and the pads go on here?

I really do. I you know what how he's done in the offseason, his staff, bringing in, the bringing into players, the depth veteran players, free agents, even through the draft. I think we've we've really solidified some depth and a lot of positions. And so it's going to be exciting once we get into camp to really see the cream rise and to see who's going to be a part of the Philadelphi Eagles in twenty sixteen, two and a half weeks away and the preseason starts. I'm excited. I

can't wait. I wish it was tomorrow. Doug, thanks so much. Dud Peterson in studio, the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Here on Philadelphia Eagles dot Com. You need a Metro ticket. Talk to me, please, I don't even know these real tickets if your knowledge didn't touch it. Leg this leather legit. I mean, how do we really know? It looks good? Right Meta? No, I'm paying myself. I gotta make Does the baby need a Metro ticket? I'll

give her one on me. These tickets. I'm not stealing your soul. You can look at them. Man, nobody wants to buy tickets from a guy on the street. I don't understand. Welcome back to Inside Training Camp presented by Extinity Dave SPIDERO Chris McPherson, as we get ready for the real bulk of training camp to start with the veterans here when the pads go on. Remarkably, Chris, the preseason begins in just over two weeks, so there's a lot to get done between now and when the Tampa

Bay Buccaneers come to town. Well, it was nice that you had these first couple of days to kind of ease into the process. You can definitely tell was a different vibe over here at the Novocare Complex, building up from the OTAs when you're just kind of getting ready for the summer. You want training camp to get here. Finally it arrives and the players are here, but it's the rookies and the select the vests and the quarterbacks, and the rookies are They're just trying to get acclimated.

They're trying to review the playbook and get a refresher on things that they learned in the summer that you know, time before they had the month away from the Novocare Complex. And now it really gets going. Like you said earlier, Dave, the tempo is gonna pick up. You know that preseason football is in the air, and it takes the game to a different level when you get to it was funny today after practice, I spoke to Isaac Sayomalo and I said, so, do you feel like you're caught up

getting these three days of reps? He goes no, because he missed most of the spring as his Oregon State class graduated, and he knows now that he's gonna go against these defensive lineman who've been in the league for five, six, seven years, and he is way behind. And I still think that Sam Malo has a chance to start on September elect sting against the Cleveland Browns. That just much. That's your ball. We have a ball prediction here. Yeah,

there'll be some commendation at the left guard position. I always get to set up on what's happening here on Philadelphia Eagles dot com with your favorite football team over the next couple of days here. And that Doug Peterson interview, well, it's available on demands to make sure you check it out. I thought he was great. He's been wonderful to work with,

very accommodating as well. Yes, I mean it's a guy who again he played here in Philadelphia already coach here in Philadelphia as an assistant before, so he understands Philadelphia. He loves it here. You know, I remember about a month ago he was doing a roundtable session with reporters and he was asked about you know it, did fans ever throw beer at you or beer at you or things along those lines, and he was like, that's part of the job. It's not like it's something that's stuck

in his mind. So he loves being in the Eagle, who loves being back with the organization, and he wants to help this team get to those days back in the two thousands when they were making those deep playoff runs year and year out. On Thursday, quarterback Sam Bradford, offensive coordinator Frank Reich, meet the media and we've got you covered with the full first team practice of the two thousand and sixteen training camp and a reminder to

all fans, free of charge. On Sunday, July thirty, first training camp is open to the public in Lincoln Financial Field. It begins at ten o'clock. The gates open at eight o'clock and why not tailgate Let's get ready for the regular season, no question about it. You're gonna be hosting a spotlight forum which it is sold out, yes, with Vince Papali and Harold Carmichael. Long shots who made it

big in the NFL. Not as easy to do these days with these truncated training camp times and limited opportunities on the practice field. Remember only one practice a day and then there's a walk through, So it's really tough for the long shots to make an impression. That's why these past three days were so important. All right, question, We'll me back tomorrow with inside training Camp presented by Xfinity for Chris McPherson. I'm Dave Spiderra. Thanks so much

for joining us. Have yourselves a great Eagles days
