December is the month in the NFL when the contenders separate themselves from the pretenders. And in their first game in December twenty sixteen, the Eagles fell flat in Cincinnati, losing thirty two to fourteen, and we're here to talk about it the day after. Not only that, but to
talk about where the Eagles go from here. Hello everyone, and welcome to Eagles three sixty Dave Spidero along with the Hall of Famer Brian Westbrook after the I guess the low point of this season today, Brian, Eagles fall to five and seven and so many things went wrong in Cincinnati. How did it happen? Well, you know, in order for this team to win, they have to have zero eras, and unfortunately we made an awful lot of mistakes. But anytime you lose in this league, for the most part,
it starts up front. Offensive line defensive line, and we got dominated a bit and both of those trenches offensively and defensively. And if you want to win, no matter who's your quarterback, no matter who's in the secondary, you have to win up front. We lost both of those battles. So many things to talk about here. Let's get you caught up with everything happening at an overcare complex. First, Doug Peterson met the media answered a lot of tough questions.
Monday morning, Alex Smith is here with the Eagles three sixty update. Hi everyone, I'm Alex Smith here with your three sixty update. Well, Sunday another tough outing for the Eagles in Cincinnati as they fell to the Bengals by a final score of thirty two to fourteen, the third straight loss for the Eagles, and today we heard from head coach Doug Peterson on what his message is to the team as they enter into this final four game stretch with three of the games at home against division foes.
And according to coach Peterson, it's a mix of tough love and still supporting his players. I think there's a a level of that tough love. There's got to be that accountability that I was talking about. Um, you know, I I implore and I challenge the leaders of the football team, you know, to to stand up and and and really not only hold themselves, but the rest of the team and uh and listen. It's not a it's not a panic move or anything like that, but just hey,
let's just make sure we're doing things right. Everybody just do things right, do their jobs, do their assignments, um, you know, and and good things are going to happen. So obviously, again it starts with me, and uh, I've got to make sure that I'm doing it right and I'm holding myself accountable. And you know, as you mentioned earlier with with Jeffrey and Howie, if they're holding me accountable and all that, I mean, that's where it starts. And then I and I relay that message to the
assistance and onto the team. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz also had his struggles against the Bengals, throwing three interceptions against that Bengals defense, but today coach Peterson said that it's all part of the learning process as Carson starts to experience some of these growing pains here in his first season.
You know, these are the some of the decisions that I made back when when the trade was made that if there was going to be some some growing pains, these we're going to be some of the pains we're gonna have to go through. And just him him understanding and him learning, and us growing together as as as an offense, he and I growing as coach and quarterback together and uh, it's all part of the It's all part of the process. And finally will close things out
here with an injury update. Wide receiver Dorial Green Beckham suffered an oblique injury yesterday. He will be held out of practice on Wednesday, but he should be good to go for Sunday's game. Meanwhile, some good news for the Eagles, as running back Ryan Matthews, with his knee injury, is scheduled to practice this week and hopefully play on Sunday
against the Washington Redskins. For a complete injury update and everything that you need to know from Coach Peterson's press conference, stay right here in Philadelphia Eagles dot com and the official Eagles mobile app. Thank you so much, Alex, Brian and I will now rehash what went wrong for the Eagles and just talk big picture as well. When we return to Eagles three sixty. We begin on the defensive side of the ball. Six straight possessions by the Bengals

Brian Westbrook, and you knew pretty early in the game on Sunday that things were not going to go the way the Philadelphia Eagles had planned, especially from a defensive standpoint, Brian, the Bengals come out after a short Donnie Jones punt, go down the field, score a field going. Jalen Watkins had the football in
his chest and couldn't hold in. I thought, oh, boys, this the way it's gonna be, And turns out that's the way it was. Well, you talk about missed opportunities. Obviously Jalen Watkins missed that opportunity. There were other opportunities where your defense has to get off the field and they only held the Cincinnati to fifty percent or third down, which is not very good. But when you have to get off the field, you put the offense in bad positions.
Third and eight. There was a couple third and eight on on Cincinnati's second possession where we couldn't get off the field. Third and eight, twenty three yard completion down the field, another third and eight fifty yard completion down the field. If you want to win as a defense, you have to be able to get off the field, especially in third or now. You work so long, you work so hard to put a team in third and long, and when you don't get off the field, it just
destroys you. It did destroy the Eagles defense. What are you seeing from this defense that early in the season got to the quarterback, disrupted the line of scrimmage, mixed in some blitzes, made some plays, took the football away. Not happening at all. Yeah, I think you're really depending on your front four to get a pressure on the quarterback early on in the game, and they're not getting that pressure with only four and so now you're putting
it on Jim Swartz just a bit. Do you add blitzing to give up coverage in the back end or do you say, listen, we need you guys to get to the quarterback. Unfortunately, we talk about losing in the trenches. Our front four. They lost in the trenches yesterday. They got dominated, they got man handled, and they didn't put enough pressure on Andy Dalton. And if we want to win, the only way that this defense can win is to get pressure with four front and we lost that battle.
And let's keep in mind that the Bengals played the game without aj Green, their star wide receiver, their best running back Geo Bernard out for the season with an injury. The Eagles knew going in that the right side of the Cincinnati offensive line was weak, and I thought Brandon Graham brought it as he has every week this year, I'm not sure anybody else really did well. You know, Brandon Graham. The thing that he does well is that he plays a pass and he plays the run with
the same type of intensity. And that's what you need across the board if this defensive line is going to be successful. Color Barwin has to do it. Benny Logan has to do it, as well as Fletcher Cox. When they bring in Vinny Curry, he has to do the
same thing. We're not seeing that same type of intensity, pride in effort in every single play from everyone across the board on the defensive line, and that's the only way that's the key to victory here for us on the defensive side of the ball is to win in the trenches. Not everyone is given that same type of effort. I don't mean to single him out, Brian, but we thought that Vinnie Curry going from a three to four two a four to three would make him more productive.
It has been exactly the opposite. Maybe he's just better than a three four as a stand up outside linebacker. You know, Vinny has gotten pressure on certain situations, But as I watch a lot of his tape, I just see a guy that's getting to the what he's rushing, and so every time he's rushing at the point of contact, the offensive line is trying to get their hands on the Vinny Benn, he's allowing that to happen. As a defensive player at the point of contact, you have to
be able to work your hands. You're slapping the way again the offensive guy's hands. You have a move, then you have the counter move, then you have the counter move to the countermove. And unfortunately Benny just doesn't have those moves right now. That's something that you can work on the practice. That's something that he has to get better on if he wants to be the highest paid defensive player as far as the defensive linement on our team, he has to work on those types of things to
be effective. Right now with one of the half sacks on the season, he's not affective doing it. Ad linebacker Nigel Browden was really an impact player in the month of September and even into October. Lately, though Brian a
lot of penalties, a lot of mistakes. What's going on with him, Well, he's playing sloppy football, I mean, and sometimes because you get frustrated at the linebacker position, you put yourself in bad situations and then you have to drag a guy down by a collar fifteen yard penalty. You can't, as a linebacker as really as any player on the team, penalize your team because if you're a bad play, you have to be in the right position at the right time, and if you don't, if you're not,
you can't allow the penalty to happen. You can't drag a guy down by as collar. That's just too costly for a team. Fifteen yards tacked on the top of another fifteen yard penalty on the next play. That's going to hurt your football team. Undisciplined play has hurt this team to another game with multiple penalties, double digit penalties. You can't win that way in the NFL and in the secondary. The Eagles, when they got the Cincinnati Bengals
to third down, Andy Dalton tore them apart. Ten of twelve passing he averaged on the game ten point seven yards per past attempt. That's a whopping number, and that speaks to coverage that's just not good enough. There's a combination. When you talk about coverage, you talk about pressure as well. When you have the pressure, it makes your coverage look off for well, when you're challenging receivers, it makes those
guys up front look a little bit better. Right now, our coverage and our pressure are front with our front floor are not in sync, and we're too loose on the receivers. We're not challenging these guys as far as our defensive backstandpoint enough in a front we're not getting the pressure and so in a lose lose situation right now, they have to find a way to get to the quarterback. How do you find a way. You need a challenge. You need to start challenging guys. And I'm not talking
about challenging the individual players. I'm talking about the cornerbacks, challenging the receivers. Not being afraid to get beat if you give up a big touchdown. Okay, now we have to change something up. But from the beginning of the football game, I want a guy to get in someone's face and challenge him. You have to beat me off the line of scrimmers. And then when you catch the ball in that small window, I'm gonna challenge you again and try to beat your hands so you're not catching
that football. And I want these guys to show some effort. I want them to show some pride. I want them to challenge someone. It's a man versus man game, and if I could beat you, then we're gonna win that play. You have to win more plays than your opponent does. It's very difficult to assignment for the Eagles. On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, the Washington Redskins and that loaded offense come into town smarting after a loss to the
Arizona Cardinals. On special teams, Eagles really didn't have a great day. Donnie Jones with that opening punk kind of set the tone. Caleb st just missed a field goal one positive, A big kickoff return by Kenyon Barner set up a touchdown, but not enough for the Philadelphia Eagles on defense on special teams. On offense, while we know the Eagles struggled sixty passing attempts by quarterback Carson Wentz far too many. What's going on on that side of
the ball. We'll talk about it when we return to Eagles three sixty. This portion of Eagles three sixty was presented by Toyota. Now is your chance to vote for the Toyota Player of the Week. America runs on Duncan Well The offense struggling on Sunday in Cincinnati, Dave Spidero, Brian Westbrook, and we're here to talk about it on Eagles three sixty. It has been quite a plummet for the Eagles offensively since that three and oh starts, since the loss of Lane Johnson after
Week four. I point to that Brian as the start to a real struggle for the offense. That offensive line just hasn't been in since since Lane left. That's because you're moving pieces around. When you take one of your best players on offense, which is Lane Johnson represents, and
you take them away. Now you have to move a guy here and move a guy there just to make things work as an offensive play call, or you're limited because you don't trust those guys as much as you trust an all pro type of guy like Lane Johnson. The other part is that you're not going to get the same production. You're not going to get the same plays from guys that are not Lane Johnson, because he's a very good football player. We need to be able to run the ball and win in the trenches right now.
We haven't done that in a long time. And a lot of it started when Lane Johnson went out. And you know the argument of the run pass ratio. I really paid attention to it on Sunday. I didn't think it was a big deal. Look, too many four false start penalties in the first half in a stadium that was dead. I just don't know how it happens. Discipline.
I mean these types of things. Obviously I haven't been to practice, but they are probably happening in practices and they really converted into games, and you can't do that. You have to be a discipline team, even when you're not at your best, even when you don't have all of your players there, you're missing some players. You have to be a discipline team to win, even when you go into Cincinnati against a team that only has three wins, you have to be a discipline team all season long.
This team has struggled with penalties, false starts, personal fouls. Those types of things continue to occur. They have to find a way to start and get a way to get disciplined. Right now, the veterans need to step up and take charge of that. Brian Carson Wentz is the big story, the big picture story for this franchise, and everybody's saying, hey, there's mechanical issues. He's looking down receivers, he's staring down receivers, he's forcing passes. Three interceptions against
the Bengals. What are you seeing from Carson start of the season through now? What I'm saying all of those things. I'm seeing them taking long strides in some of this passes. That's mechanics. I'm taking a long whooping arm throat. That's mechanics. Again, as a quarterback, as a season goes, really not just a quarterback, as a player, you have to focus on the small things to make those big things a lot easier. Right now, he's failing to some of those small things,
and that happens over the course of the season. Those are the things that you have to say, Okay, I'm a critically watch the film. I made a mistake here and I need to fix that, and I'm going to go out and practice and work on that particular thing. If you have to do that as a player, it hurts some time to be critical of yourself, but at the same time, if you want to be better, you have to be critical. That's where Carson Wisbey's started. I'm
the wide receiver corps. On Sunday, missing Jordan Matthew, Paul Turner stepped up and had a nice game in his first real productive game as an NFL player. Maybe have something there. At least he's really confident and easily catching the football. Football and they called the football well and that goes a long way for our wide receiver corps. They haven't been doing that very often and consistently enough.
The one thing I did see and listen, Nelson Agilor didn't have a great gang, but at the same time he caught some difficult footballs. He went out there and looked more confident. I like that. That's building towards the future. That's getting better. Paul Turner did a great job of coming out catching some difficult balls and making some yards after the catch. I like that as well. We just
need more of that. We need We didn't have enough, but we need a lot more of it, and zach ERT's fifteen targets a touchdown nine catches, his second red zone touchdown in three weeks. So there are slivers of optimistic happenings yesterday. The main thing that we need to focus on is protecting Carson Wentz and be able to establish a running game. We don't have to be consistently running, but our offensive line has to win up front. I talked about losing in the train. They have to be
able to re establish that line of scrimmage. Too many times our offensive line is getting pushed two and three yards in the backfield. And I don't care who you're running back. I don't care how many run players you call. If your offensive line is two or three yards in your backfield consistently over the course of a game, you can't win, especially running in the football. Yeah. So it's a tough picture for the Eagles offense, no question about it.
And they've got a few days to get ready for the Washington Redskins, the first of three NFC East games in these final four outings of the regular season. When we return to Eagles three sixty, we'll talk about that. We'll look ahead the Washington Redskins in town on Sunday. all right, Yes, sir, all right, appreciate. Eagles are two and seven in their last nine games after that three and old start. Dave Spidero, Brian Westbrook, what in the world has happened? I think their fundamentals have fallen apart just a bit, and now we're relying on things that we're not very good at. We're relying on throwing the football down the field sixty times in the game, and our receivers and our quarterback are just not very good. At this point. We have to get back to some basics.
Maybe that's running the football, maybe that's being dominant on the defensive front, but we have to do something good right now. Where we're doing is not the right thing. With September a mirage, Brian, I think we played some teams in September that are just not very good. Pittsburgh was not playing well at the time we ended up beating them. Chicago and Cleveland are not very good football teams, and I think that gave us a false sense of security.
This team has some holes, it has some flaws. We have to get better in certain positions, and as the season has gone on, those positions are now glaring. Now we're seeing them more and more and more the one thing that we can control. We can't control who's on the team right now. The one thing that the people on the team can't control is personal fouls, the penalties, the false starts, making those types of mistakes. They have to do a better job. The players need to do
a better job of controlling those things. Doug has to play a part in that as well. That means practice and those things are in practice are converted into the game. You have to be sharpen practice in order to be sharpen the game, Brian, it will be interesting to see how the Eagles play it on Sunday against the Redskins, who ran roughshot over Jim Schwartz's defense in Landover, Maryland two hundred and thirty one rushing yards. Kirk Cousins a big day. They come off the loss. They're fighting for
their playoff lives. I felt the Eagles weren't aggressive enough defensively against Washington the first time. I'm expecting Jim Schwartz to come out with all guns. Getting the first quarter of the first couple of series, especially for our defense, is going to set the tone and show you exactly what this team is all about. The Reskins Arena they're gonna want to come out and jam the ball down.
Our throat is our front seven prepared. Will our front four find a way to get the ball and take the ball from the other team, but also get pressure on Kirk Cousins because he's a different guy under pressure. We will find out very early in this football game what type of response this team is going to have. We shall see on Sunday when Washington comes to town. Brian Westbrook, how far away now are the Philadelphia US?
What goes through the mind of play at five and seven in this tailspin coming off such a tough loss. I think everyone needs to examine themselves. That you can't look and say, well, he's not doing this and he's not doing that. You have to look at yourself in the mirror and say, what can I do better to make this team more successful? Is it the penalties? Is a the false start? Is it better play? All those things will come into play at this point in the season.
You have to be very critical. A lot of NFL players don't want to be critical of themselves, but at this point you have to be very critical of yourself and look at everything that you're doing and if it's not helping your team, you need to eliminate that. If you do that, we'll be moving towards the future big picture here, what is more concerning to you the offensive side of the ball or the defensive side of the ball.
Right now, the defensive side of the ball, because that's where we spend an awful lot of money, That's where we have a lot of older players on the defensive side of the ball, and we expected them to play well throughout the season. They've let us down just a bit offensively. We're limited just because of the personnel. We're hurting here at Philadelphia Eagles dot Com.
