This is the drive-in podcast. Take one about a big bada. Boom. Welcome to episode 199. Of the drive-in podcast on today's episode, we have our Oscars predictions for the 95th Academy Awards. So use the bathroom now, grab that popcorn and enjoy episode, 199 of the drive-in podcast. How do you Duty welcome to episode 19? 9 of TDI? This is dr. O on the horn to start per usual. And as always, I'm joined by my co-host, my best friend and Academy Awards Aficionado, Ricky Flex.
Yes, he's seen all the movies. You have questions. He has answers. We aren't we have arrived to Oscar weekend and we have some interesting storylines going in. We're going to give you our predictions for the show. Who will win but also who should win. Ricky flicks. Are you hyped? Talk about the Oscars? Those golden statute baby. Good to talk to your doctor about. This is one of my favorite episodes of the year.
I love the Oscars but what? I love more about the Oscars is predicting who's going to win the Oscars. So this is what my favorite episodes. Unfortunately this year is kind of chalky. I will say the top but at the end of the day as we saw in 2019, parasite or 2020, Oscars parasite and recent memories. We got a lot of shocking winds especially at the top. So we have a lot of heavy betting favorites, but you never know and recent memory of the, at the Academy Awards.
Yeah, you really, we can assume all we want but there's always going to be those one or two that just come out of nowhere. Ones that we presume are going to lead to certain actors or certain directors or people worked on the movies that we love other people and probably not so much, take the stage, and we've had some electric moments but also shocking. And I think we might get that at this Academy Awards. But it's also why we don't in this palette podcast, why I love
it so much. We don't go with who will win all the time but it's like who should win in our eyes like and we're going to go through the major categories. He's here. All the acting categories were going to go through the writing the adapted, screenplay. The original screenplay, and we're going to go through director and best picture before we get into it. Ricky flicks. Last episode, we had our Creed review, Creed 3, and we did our Rocky rankings.
And of course, once we put the rocky rankings out there on all, listening platforms and on YouTube, there was some backlash and I don't know. Ricky Flex, how much you pay attention to the YouTube? Did you happen to see some of the comments on the YouTube this week? I did not know. Okay, so we had, you know, if you comment on the YouTube, we are going to respond because we want to engage with our audiences.
There is someone who had a lot of beef with r98 rankings of The rocky franchise and Ricky Flex. I convinced him to have rocky five as number 8 and Rocky Babble at number 9 and this was in this is at the top of the segment. So in someone was watching this on YouTube, they commented immediately when they saw it they they were critical that.
We said that Rocky Balboa is not as memorable and not as beloved as the other Rocky movies and And I responded by saying, buddy, this is like for the 98 range in the Rocky franchise. If you are at 9 or you are at number 8, let alone number 7, you're not all that memorable, buddy. You know, and the to say that is widely beloved by audiences Rocky Balboa, I would say, people forget about Rocky six, even existing dude, even existing and so, yes, it's a nice story. The Comeback Rocky on top.
All right. He's fighting a 65 year old rock. He's fighting this guy who's 30 years old, based off a video game. Simulation you can act like it's a Beloved movie, but we're gonna call. Yeah, you're lying to yourself buddy, don't try and gain the sympathy votes there. You're not getting any likes on that, comment to me. It wasn't worth the fight. Definitely not for the 89 no matter what. Those are the bottom. Clear bottom, two movies in the franchise.
Anyway, so what's the point of even debating? What's the point of debating? Which is should be number eight. That's where like, when we came in our ranking is like so early in the rank a power rankings. It was like, what's the point of me? Because I thought Rocky 5 should be last. It's like what's the point of me arguing this, I'll let you take this one and I'll make a trade later on in the day and the draft or the power rankings.
I think at the end of the day, if that was named Rocky, six that Like all right, maybe it's more of a discussion but it's named Rocky Balboa for a reason, like, it's named after the person because they just didn't want to say Rocky 6 because it was so different than the original franchise and so much later. So looking back on it, I think we did get it right with the 89, Tommy Morrison, just great, great name, great villain, not good, Valentine really good heel
video. It is of the nod even though I hate what they decide to do with Rocky and that movie it deserved the nod over Rocky Balboa. Barely but no we're talking about it for more than we should if you're taking the time to go online and write a comment on your support of the movie Rocky Balboa, you have to re-evaluate right your priorities and I was like teaching my class and I told him like I'm in a big you to be for it now. Like what's going on?
Oh my God, oh my God, I'm in a Rocky Balboa verse Rocky, fire fight and they're like, oh wait a sec. Isn't that? The one where he was like in the restaurant and like they were he lost a video game fight and like, yes. Isn't that the worst one? Then they're like? Yes. And so it's a good thing. I have the reassurance of a bunch of 14 year, olds. Tell me what the frak, you franchise to look like in their Outlook. You know, they probably haven't seen Rocky five though.
They were like, confusing Rocky 5 in like, Rocky Balboa but it just made me think like, just by the factor confusing. How bad those Movies were tells us, we got it. Right. Yeah, and without that's not the only thing. We got beef on with our social media. This week, we also had our top billing of movie Bears and we got some flak from former co-host of ours Nez, who is saying that Paddington deserve a spot on our list and I had not seen Paddington.
So I said, I wasn't gonna draft it, I was gonna drive to out of respect, but similarly to like how we're going to talk about the Oscar movies. I'm not going. To speak ill or speak? Well movies, I have not seen, I haven't seen Paddington. I was viewed as a ripoff of Winnie, the Pooh. And that's why I didn't make my list, right? So Ricky Flex, do you want to defend yourself to Nest right now? Why you didn't at Paddington on your top five?
Gladly Paddington is a fine movie Paddington to is a fine movie. We know that from Nick cage and page Apache Pascal from earlier last year, the unbearable way to massive town. But you know what? And I don't. And first way I don't view it as a one of the Pooh, knock off. No, I respect other people that do I view Paddington? Has a great good character. It's a fine character, very cute, the rain jacket and hat. Very cute adorable. Great.
Twitter account Twitter. Yeah, placing Paddington in a movie every day. Since I don't know how long that's a great Twitter account, I follow a great Twitter account, great Twitter father but at the end of the day when I'm ranking movie Bears, I'm not just going by adorable. That's a part of it, but I'm going. An impact. I'm going my personal favorite I'm going. Funniness, I'm going, there's so many different aspects to choose from.
So Shira to combine and like, your resume that you're pitching to me of why you deserve to be in my top five and Paddington. Besides the adorableness factor doesn't come close. I don't, I think there's movies are overrated, first and foremost, because of the door, openness of it, and how odd it is, and how good the CGI is allegedly and the rain boats. The rain boots and all whatever. I just don't. I think those movies are wicked, overrated.
I just think they are. And yes, I have movie bears in there. Where you could say that movie sucked, right? I don't know. Like if some people just don't like the old animation but Jungle Book, right? But that's out of respect that's all about respect. I'm going to respect the Jungle Book over Paddington that's just without a second thought you got to earn your movie based. Types. Yes. And I think it's either too early or I just have to see the movies again.
But for right now, Paddington was worth mentioning because his impact on social media, but was not coming close to my list. The comment from NASDAQ cracked me up. Where is like the disrespect to Paddington, is in all caps absurd and in many people's eyes. Yes. But like we have a very distinct perspective, right? And when it comes to like, fictional characters like See what? That's what your page is. Like, inserting Paddington into a movie every day. For how many days.
I feel like you could do that with like, baby grow gu right now baby Yoda there. I feel like that's another one you could do. Who else is in that Pantheon of just like cute characters like that ours aren't that is in like that baby Yoda and Paddington sector and I honestly was thinking not in that sector but like bears, like, Ted. That would be funny if Ted like was in like, you put 10, that would be a different. Level of Comedy.
But yes, like you would put him in a bunch of already movies. Like his first one be like in Deadpool like at the strip club or something. Right. Right. Right. Um yeah, that's a good question. I wish I knew that would before going in so I can give a better answer. I don't know why I'm thinking about it. I think about the E-Trade babies, but that's a dumb EJ.
Babies would be great. That's a great like that, that that's a throwback where it's like the new users on social media and not might not know what they have. The wedding that Super Bowl commercial with the wedding. This year, yeah, this year. Yeah, I know. But like but the people understand that commercial people that were watching that original 110 years ago, none of all time. Still good. Yes. And I each a baby's I wouldn't be opposed, you know, they had a what was that?
Once Super Baby Geniuses. Wasn't that a movie Super Baby Geniuses. Super Baby Geniuses to, right? I remember when I was in elementary school, those came out. Let's do that with like the E-Trade babies? Yes, I agree with that. Another one would be like, like I don't know, like another and we like guinea pigs. The boss baby boss baby like guinea pigs like G-Force or something like, you know, you put guinea pigs in, something like that. It's just cute animals like that.
You just insert into any movie and to be funny and we're on the commercial train. What was that? One with the hamsters? That was the boxcar, the cues that smart. What car was it? Oh my God, my buddy Brett in college had one. Yes or kiss or something there.
Speaking up speaking things you weren't prepared for Ricky Flex before we get to the Oscar movies here, I had a top five are prepared and I kind of I'm not expecting you to just think of a top-five out of thin air, but I wanted you to just like guess, comment on the top 5 I'm about to reveal to you. So the Oscars isn't always like when people think about oh they read the title of this episode, the Oscar predictions. Oh, I didn't see any of the Oscar movies.
I don't care about those Oscar movies. I made a top five list of my favorite movies of 2022. To that did not receive an Oscar nomination whatsoever. So it doesn't matter if like, any of the the categories, who listened before director, any of the acting categories of the writing, I decided to make a list of movies that did not receive a single nomination and rank them based on what I love this year. So that takes out like movies, might one of my favorites of last year.
I'll tell you. It is my favorite. The fat man, for example, doesn't get nominee for any acting. Categories doesn't get nominated for Best Picture best. The director doesn't even get like, cinematography score, what? Oh, so, but it does get right costume design, for example, makeup makeup, makeup and hair. I believe it was actually. So, I decided to like, just take movies that did not appear anywhere on these nominations and make a top five.
Are you ready here? My top 5 reflux, Yeah, I think I can make a quick one really quickly. So, as I stormed through my five, I'll let you like think about yours. Number 5, I get the woman King now streaming on Netflix, wasn't spectacular. I'm very glad. This was not nominated for best
picture. I feel like this movie would have been better if it was rated R actually felt like it really held back on some of the Gory aspects and I think feel like that was a way they can kind of emphasize like the physical performance of one Viola Davis. I felt like there's a lot of cutscenes with Viola here. It's movies. Been getting a lot of backlash, I think it kind of cost itself.
An Academy Award, any Academy Award consideration with, like, the way it handled like the actual Source material and the historical context? A lot of the stuff was accurate, as a world Civ one teacher, the way they attack, like the Atlantic slave trade interactions with the Europeans, like the into the In from the African Kingdom, right? And it's interactions with people from the Americas. I thought it was all pretty accurate.
Okay. I don't care as much about like the historical inaccuracies that people make a big deal about. It's more about like it wasn't all about Viola. Davis, I expected it to be. I thought she was really good in it, but I don't think she should get the process. People are like, lauding her with number four, I had the
menu, I like the menu a lot. We talked about A bunch of times, I thought was great satire and it's a great critique on way that the way that we attack in the way we criticize food films or music other categories, I think it was just a really telling movie of the time. Period, we live in. I got route Ray Fiennes, is also excellent in that movie, highly recommend it now streaming on
HBO. Max number three, I had the northmen from Robert Eggers, Robert Eggers, you might know him from the which you might know him from the lighthouse. Electric director, young director, who loves period pieces, Alexander Skarsgard gives arguably the most, the best physical performance of the year.
A lot of people talk about Viola Davis, I will combat you with Alexander Skarsgard, who seemed like he arrived with the northmen and seems like he's doing some really exciting stuff beyond that and to I have barbarian barbarian is the whore. The the sleeper whore, hit of the Year back in 2022. The streaming hit of the year that see a trickle, like surprise theatrical hit as well. The first two acts that movie is up there with some of the best.
I saw all of 2022, third acts, sort of falls apart. But once again, Skarsgard the other Skarsgård here, we got bills Skarsgård more known for the horror of peel with Pennywise the Clown him in that First Act. I thought was stupendous. And then, Justin, long with the tempo, change the comedic timing. The humor that It was involved with that movie. It was changing on a pivot, right? At a, I'm a dime, it was able to kind of adjust the tones but also keep you like on the edge of your seat.
It really had. You just saying WTF as you were watching it. I love those type of film experiences and that kind of plays into my number one movie of the year. That did not receive a single Oscar nomination, Jordan peels. Nope. Ace a Experience that I think it was other than the Batman. My favorite movie experience in the theater of the year, the
visuals were otherworldly. I know some of the stuff people have issues with, like, the way the story went and some of the themes that were being displayed. And then also, like some question marks on decisions made from Jordan Peele, but I will say Keke Palmer and Daniel kuya held the screen mighty fine. Steven Yeun great supporting appearance there and really sealed the deal with the third act. And I'm gonna say, nope is my favorite movie. The, you did not receive a
single Oscar nomination. What'd you think about last rookie? I like it II would have a very similar list so you're doing just not a single Oscar Nom didn't get. Yeah, so not so no recognition whatsoever. And I will say, I need to preface this. I should have prefaced it. I should say with the idea. I never saw X or Pearl this year to the most popular 824 movies of the year. And I feel like if I saw Pearl and I would like it a lot, and it does scare me shitless to be honest.
Like when I see like the moments on Twitter with the Mia goth just staring at me, 3:00 in the morning, not laughs so laughing but crying and staring right through me as if I'm a trans guy, was it? If I'm a ghost I feel like I would have enjoyed that performance a lot and what a crack the top five wasn't that confident the woman king or side only this week but um I put it on there anyway just because I didn't want to put hustle on there.
I didn't love hostel with Adam Sandler, massive Talent with Nic cage. Like it's a good premise but once again the ventures on the side of absurdity I think I the five, I'm pretty confident with. Yeah I want to say, I got a pretty similar or less. I agree with your hustle comment. We can want to make my list I but I agree with all your commentary, their Barbarian, definitely, definitely in my top 5 x Pearl eyes.
I'm counting those as one easily in my top five, I think that and Barbarian very similar me. A goth is literally insane. I need to see infinity pool. I heard it's amazing or I heard it's very good with Skarsgård. Cronenberg is scarce on post. Scare me I will be watching that thing. It's on Hulu right now crimes the future also So I didn't see this year, right corner? Dad Cronenberg didn't see that one. Nope would also be in my top five. So I got no barbarian X slash Perl. The menu.
Definitely the ending didn't strike it for me I but I think overall just the premise itself. Awesome. And then honestly it's a battle because knives out to got recognized screenplay not there so not yeah. I see it's between the northmen and bones and all and I would pick the northmen over that. So but I just want to shout out bones and all that was actually a good movie. Did not do well at the box office at all, but that was good. A couple other honorable
mentions would be ambulance. Got a shout-out JT. Yeah, yeah. That's not fair. Maybe I should put that inside of the, the woman. Can forgot about that one. Pray member pray. Yeah, good. I do feel like people overrated, pray, I agree. But I'm just saying, like, nah, On Oscar, I'm just a nice surprise Chippendale, awesome fun, animated movie. Emily the criminal Aubrey Plaza Netflix. That's really good. But again the ending doesn't really hit it for me.
And then finally long Halloween on HBO, Max Parts 1 and 2 came out this year, okay? Really must be the beginning of last year. Yeah, or part 2 or part. 2 came out this year. But either way, at that was an awesome Batman. Watching that on HBO Max highly
recommend. And I will say the northmen, I think it sucks because I think it's the North and came out like November. I think it would have had a shot especially with an Oscar. I want to, I want to say favor, but someone that they seem to enjoy right with Robert Eggers, and I would like to see like Alexander Skarsgard, get a little more Shine for the performance. He had in that movie and it was just a badass movie, and it was strong performances all around. I thought Nicole Kidman in the
second and third. That movie really turned it on it reminded people like why she is so it's allotted actress. Ethan Hawke in the beginning amazing Willem Dafoe creepy as always it just seemed like it hit on all cylinders. It just was I think it was a tad slow for some people and it was just a tick off. It's a little bit weird.
You kind of have to buy in a little bit with all the Norse mythology there, but it's definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it. I believe it's still streaming. On peacock, or it's on Prime right now, it's one or the other. I do know. It is streaming. All right. Thank you, flux. You're ready. Get to the Oscars 95. Baby 95th Academy Awards. Ready to go? 95 approaching the century mark, just like, the driving pod is approaching the to century mark
on episodes. Oh, my God. So, Ricky Flex. Where Do We Begin? Right, I said we're doing the acting categories. We're doing the writing, He's director. Best picture. I think we might have to build up here with supporting actors. Okay, I think that's where we can start here. So what we're going to do, we're going to read off the nominees. We're going to go with who we think will win and then who we both think should win.
So for best supporting actor, we're going to start off with Brendan Gleeson was nominated for the Banshees of an issue. Aaron, we have Brian, Tyler gray Henry. and Causeway, Judd, Hirsch in the Fable men's Barry kyogen in the Banshees of an issue in second nomination, the supporting category for Banshees, and the keyway quand, the overwhelming, favorite for everything everywhere, all at once, Ricky flexes anyone but Kwan, Going to win this award. Does he have the Kwan?
This is in the back out out Cuba Gooding jr. This is the easiest pick of the night. The easiest pick of the night goes to Best Supporting Actor and Chi, Quan Quan Chi Chi Quake want, whatever. However, you keep walking keep walking easy as - 2000, betting odds like easy as picking the night. And well deserved I'm going should and will when he swept all the pre-award shows deservingly.
Unbelievable job except the bath is obviously because that's more English focused very kyogen one that one, but he should keyway. Quan should have won it, unreal, performance and unbelievable. Movie should win. We'll win kiai. Kwan will win. He's put on probably the best. I do the best roll out going into the Oscars, he's campaign. The best seems like he's everywhere right now. He is literally the definition of an Oscar darling.
At this point, he has all the momentum that you could possibly gain from this movie. He's got the great storyline going in. He was strong, obviously, and everything everywhere all at once, probably people are talking about potential sweep for everything everywhere, all at once. And he is one of the many nominated cast members here. Yeah, and yeah. And it's just I think it's just a story line you know. I think that's the big thing here in Oscars love themselves.
Like a great story when they win coming off. Like the feel-good story that was Kota from last year's. Best picture, looking at the other nominees here, Brendan Gleeson banshees of an issue. And I don't even think he was the best supporting character in that movie. Personally, Brian tee, Tyree Henry. It seemed like Causeway, very forgettable movie, but a strong performance, one word like, hey Brian, Tyree Henry. Almost like a put them on your radar type of like Oscar
selection. Like he'll be back. Judd, Hirsch you saw, you can comment more. All I know is minimal screen time like I said before, I'm not going to comment too much on things I haven't seen and then finally bury kyogen. That is my pick. If kyi Quan wasn't such a heavy favorite, he is so loveable though. Kyi Quan but Barry kyogen seems like the streaming life of banshees of a Nation really helped write his case. I think helped get him a Screen Actor. Did he win Screen Actors and
then that was cute. Like Juan. Yea, it was Baptist Baptist. That's a pretty clear. Britain is the British. Yeah. Shows Irish boy guys. Yeah, so I thought very Cogan. It seemed like that scene that he has with Carrie Condon where he says. Well there goes that dream. It seems like that's gotten so much fly on Twitter. It's one of the most memorable moments in movies, right?
From his past year, I think all So this is like, kind of like Brian Thierry Henry, like this guy has arrived, right? This guy is somewhere that we're going to have to look after. This guy is going to be an electric Factory going forward and I think it was a different year and you didn't have the comeback of kyi Quan. I think Barry. Kogan actually has a better shot at winning but yeah. Who will win kyi Kwan? Who should when it's kyi pain? Yeah, there's a law against. Yeah.
And the campaign you mentioned, he just had a great storyline to campaign off of everything. Every 100 once had a Difficult campaign because how long the movie came out ebrill and the fact that they've kept this up the entire year and go almost 12 months is very impressive. But I would say out of all the campaigns for everything everywhere on ones, this was the easiest because it was just a lovable story.
And I think Harrison Ford aspect with Indiana Jones, the Disney plus event, the rumors of keha quan being in other Disney projects, like all that just helped with this campaign. And I just think, Looking over the other candidates here. Brendan Gleeson. Like he, this is not a Bill Nighy living situation. I think Brendan Gleeson deserves, like, looking at these names. He's very great performance and everything, but clearly I think he's like lower level here. I think Brian.
Brian Tyree Henry, totally agree with you. This is coming out moment here. Judd, Hirsch, great to scenes in the Fable man's Ode to movies, like, saying, go for your dreams, be a director, Steven Spielberg to Young, Steven Spielberg. But like, Like justice for Paul day now. I think Paul Dana over the entire movie deserved it. More than that one scene of Judd Hirsch and also Justice for Bradley Cooper last year. I've know I've talked about that why I'll leave it be and I agree
with you. I think Barry kyogen desert if he way Kwan was just a suddenly out of this race and it's just those four, I think Barry would get it. And I think that unfortunately, actually, it's the weird when you have, if you have a CLIA Quake one was out of this. Just the four of them then I would be a little nervous with banshees canceling each other out and then it going to like a judge her short by frying Tyree Henry but it's not it's going to go to Wikia Quake Juan and well deserved.
Yeah it's interesting because I think Barry kyogen is literally the clear cut number 2 here. I think he's emerged and it wasn't as clear cut when the nominations first came out I think there's been an affinity towards him as an actor but like not as much as chi-wai Quan like this guy is Stealing the hearts of anyone who hears him speak. And here's his story.
It's going to make quite the Oscar moment when he takes the stage and I can't wait, I can't wait to hear that speech, because it's going to be everywhere once it happens this Sunday, let's move on to best supporting actress. So we also have a clear-cut favorite here with Angela Bassett for best supporting actress. She is now many for black panther will kind of forever. We also have driving pod. Favorite hongqiao nominated.
A whale although you could argue she better show that got nominated for the menu Carrie Condon and the Banshees of an issue, Aaron Jamie Lee Curtis everything everywhere all at once and also Stephanie sue for the same film. So for me, I guess want me to lead off on this one since you
did the last one who will win. Its Angela Bassett, she's going to win marking the second major award given to a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie who should win I'm, I think everything everywhere all at once, those two supporting performances, kind of cancel each other out. I was so I was shocked honestly that they both got nominated. I wouldn't have them should win. Stephanie Sue, definitely puts her on the map. Jamie Lee Curtis seems like a
almost like wow. Like you decide to do something really different like we're straying away from Halloween. It seems like you're back in the industry type of moment hongqiao. I didn't see the whale so I will not comment on it. I actually think I was So I would pick carry Contin for the Banshees ivanishin in a movie that's about dudes talk and she really steals the show when she's on screen as the woman, that's pretty much the soul women in the Banshees of an issue and she's powerful, and
those moments and she has great. Comedic timing went with a Colin Farrell. I think her story is pretty powerful in that movie. How she is. They're stuck in the Irish Civil Wars. There on this remote island yet. She wants to leave this.
This remote island of drinking, and depression to move towards this war for an opportunity for herself that she doesn't see on this Locale. She's the one who wants to actually pick up and remove herself from situation as opposed to like a Brendan Gleeson or Colin Farrell here. And what is the future that it's going to be like a berry kyogen character in banshees? So I think Carrie Condon should
win. She won't Angel bass is going to I love the breakdown, I think going into this, this is one of these Awards, the best supporting actress this year where it is up in the air. I talked about at the top that a lot of these Awards is heavy favorites. This is not one of them. Well, we put in perspective, the betting odds. There isn't a favorite that's all plus money. This is like one of the few
Awards throughout the night. Maybe the only Awards where there's not a candidate or a nominee that's not - money. Clear favorite they're all plus money. So like Angela Bassett is plus 130k Lee Curtis is plus 165 carry condom plus 175 and then soon showered plus 3,000 plus well do you really believe that? Jamie Lee Curtis is a second favorite. So this award I actually disagree with the betting odds, I think she should be the favorite on the best. Amy Lee Curtis.
Wow, listen to this. So Sag's, that has the best correlation to the acting award. So, you have the two supporting actor Awards, and you have the two lead actor Awards. So sag is the best indication that we have towards. Who's going to win the Oscar for the acting Awards, who won the SAG this year, in best supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who won the bafta, which isn't a clear indication and acting. It was Carrie Condon clear British ties there obviously Irish movie, so Angela Bassett
didn't win. Either she wanted Golden Glow which has been going away from direct correlation to the Oscars every single year. So for me, I think if it was a betting lines, Jamie Lee. Curtis should be the favorite, but she's not. She's barely in second. I still think Angela Bassett will win because I think this is one of those ones where the SAG isn't one for one. But for best supporting actress over the past tennis years, since 2009. It's been 85% spot-on.
I think this is one of those messes. I think any Headaches Liquors, Ricky Flex. Ricky analytics. I know by Oscars man, I think Angela Bassett will win and I will speak for Han Xiao Wang Chao. She was amazing in the well, I thought she was great. I thought she was great in the menu. I think if you have a cumulative years like MVP awards for like, movie years, I think Colin Farrell would win on the male side being for movies this year, being great. In all of them, I saw 13 lives.
After Yang, the Batman and banshees, he was great in all those and hung Chow. The whale, and also the menu. She would be up for the MVP male and female side. But I think that I would still lean carry Condon as well. I think you hit the nail on the head. I don't want to repeat too much what you said, but I will say, second time watching banshees, I still thought she was. So impactful, versus a second time watching everything everywhere, I still appreciate it with Jamie Lee Curtis did.
I so appreciate what Stephanie Sue did. But that was the Michelle yeoh show, that was the key white Quan show and for me Carrie There was much better than both of those. Both these other nominees. It's so interesting to me Ricky flux because I feel like Angela Bassett has to win especially after last Oscars to you Oscars ago. When Chadwick Boseman had the opportunity and he was the prohibitive favorite to win best
actor. And Anthony Hopkins, swept under the radar and he wasn't even at the awards to receive right? That Oscar. And if ever thought that Chadwick Boseman was going to get from our a knees and apologize. Posthumous effort. I feel like Angela Bassett has to get it because it's a blitz of sequel to the MC. Use Academy award-winning, excuse me, no counting. Award-nominated picture with the black with black panther. I feel like they can't
shortchange that. That it's not sort changing Bozeman himself, but it feels like it is if she doesn't win. Yeah, and I've ever ever, not nominated for best picture, but we have Blockbusters nominated for best. The way water and top of Maverick. I can't believe that. Jamie Lee Curtis is getting this much love. I didn't sense. Her overpowering, everything everywhere. All at once I thought kyi Quan and all supporting performances was the most impactful. Stephanie Sue was the most
flamboyant. Jamie Lee Curtis I guess was the most. That's not grounded because that nothing about that movies grounded. Yeah. But it but it's just, it's the one that's less flashy compared to the other To supporting roles, right? And it does help her being back in the hallway and franchise and knives out like for her to be seen again. And then she burst out into this role which was like I didn't even realize she was in the movie went out when we were seeing it back last April, I
totally forgot. She was in the movie and then just everything that transpires. It's like all she's got that emotional touch. That powerful impact touch literally with being a wd. A WWE wrestler, like just the whole variety volatile sense of the Roll. Yes, I have an appreciation for it, but to say that it was better than a hunk chow or a carry condoms on a pure acting
level. I'm not going to say that no way Carrie conda was so unbelievable route and like in a movie about like guys being dudes in like drinking and like saying if they want to hang out with each other getting drunk and expressing their feelings, she's just like hanging out she just knows how to hang out with the boys. It's one of those performances and she's like you know what, I've had enough of just hanging out with the boys, you know, it was I got her.
Art was in a movie where you just don't think about the women in it like you, you thought about her after, you know, and it was crazy and I will just say as well and a year of their, a lot of period pieces back like, historical period pieces about women this year or not about women.
But like about like you have Lauren spew in the wonder, you have woman talking and I think banshees is also in this and carry content and I'll say Carrie con, I think blows all those other People away with her performance. And I'm just very, I'm very, I was very, like impressed with Carrie gonna name that, I'm not really. It was really too familiar with and that movie and even on a second re-watch, I had the same saying same sense saying, wow. She was great Houston. See it coming.
Like, you see Gleason Farrell in Martin McDonagh, film. You like that's enough for me and you don't you like then, Here Comes Barry kyogen. This is what big is fueling like potential, Best Picture Winner. That movie, right? It's more than just the two guys interacting, which everyone kind of expected going on to. Let's go to the main acting
categories best actor. So our nominees include Austin Butler for Elvis, Colin Farrell for the Banshees of an issue and Brendan Fraser for the whale Paul Mescal for after sun and Bill Nighy for living. Ricky Flex, I'm going to be honest, I haven't seen After son, and I haven't seen living or the whale, you're gonna have to actually carry the load on this one. It felt like Brendan Fraser was a prohibitive favorite for such a long time. I think he still is a prohibitive, not just, not a
strong, but like a straw. Like, I would say, an overwhelming favorite compared to the rest of the category, rest of the candidates here. Colin Farrell had a little bit of momentum when banshees of initiative started streaming on HBO Maxime, like, when people saw that performance people really enjoyed that, Be almost more so than people usually enjoy. Oscar-nominated movies, Austin Butler has been on the map since the summer and this movie came out for Elvis young exciting actor.
Playing obviously the rock and roll icon Palmas, call the newcomer here, probably someone that's like hey welcome to the club, right? We'll see you later on and Bill Nighy on the opposite end where it's like you're at the end of the line. Let's give him some love as he's wrapping up his career. Here. It's Ricky Flex. Who do you think will win for best actor? This is my toughest who will win out of everything that we're going to do today?
I really think it's 50/50. I, if we asked, if you asked a between Butler and Frazier, yeah, I think a month and a half ago. I wouldn't have said that but through these Awards season, yes, Frazier won the SAG and the SAG is the best correlation. I would say, out of all the acting Awards, best actor has the least correlation from sagged. Two Oscars but it's still high close to seventy percent since 2009.
So I just think that though on this campaign in the past month and a half Butler, won the Golden Globe, won the bafta The the accent man. People are talking about this accent is method acting how he's already arrived. That is not like it's like it's insane how his previous role was once upon a time in Hollywood. And he hasn't had a lead acting role. And he's already this high after this is like his first real true, full feature lead role. It's amazing. And I think he definitely should
win. So let me just put that down now. He should win for this role. I think we'll, you ain't you My butler. Yes, dude, I'm in the same boat. I used to because I was rooting so hard for Colin Farrell for a long time, Point. What I've noticed is that after watching the Banshees admission, and, again, the Colin Farrell's really good in that movie, the movies better than his performance. Austin Butler is performance is Elvis.
But is that movie, you know, if he's not Elvis, that movie is trash, if someone else is Colin Farrell, it's not as good. Obviously, with the Sent in like the dialogue with Brendan Gleeson, but like it didn't carry the movie Austin Butler. Literally put on a backpack, he took vows luhrmann for a ride and said, I'm gonna take us to the Academy Awards, like, Austin Butler. I think I agree with you.
I didn't think I would say this and I can't speak too much on it because I never saw the whale, you know, but based on what I saw this year. And if I had to choose between Butler and ferrell like Butler's that dude, and it's like kind of an anomaly because he's so young.
Because he hasn't had the filmography at the length of a feral or even a Fraser who's been around for decades upon decades, I would say Butler had the best performance this year, although the movie doesn't supplant banshees, or even the whale most likely, even though, like, obviously, I don't have the experience. They're, like, remember when we remember when we reviewed Elvis, how like we both were like, what a performance but that movie just didn't work.
But the academy clearly loves it. Ricky's coughing so bad, huge lump in my throat but it's impressive. This Ron that Elvis has been on how these Academy voters. And all these other Awards shows just consistently love this movie. It got its nominee for best picture for a reason and the whale isn't. I think that plays a factor. I think I might do it just to be interesting that we back-to-back picks. I Go Again sex, but I think Frazier was great in the. Well, let me just because you
haven't seen. I should just make a comment. I think it was great in the well, I think Aunt qiao is great in the while. The movie though, also similar to Elvis, not great, but I would pick Elvis over the well because it's just so much more entertaining, and it's because of that performance. The Fraser performance was just like very sad, very emotional and he was great. But And the prosperity that might win like makeup or hair or whatever it is, that whatever makeup and costume design.
But at the end of the day, the difficulty level, I think people are realizing Elvis like people just love Elvis and they realized Austin Butler is here. And he's already a step ahead of like a Palmas, girl, who's in this town, who's on this nominee list. I think that one's viewed as like, oh, like activity shall make call me by your name. Oh, he's coming. I'm up here. I think people already view an awesome brother as a Mainstay which is crazy to say. So I'm going Goodwin.
And you know what? It's plus, 120, take it right now. Austin Butler will win. So just to bedevil a devil's advocate, I'm going to say Frazier will win even though I haven't seen the movie because he's been overwhelming favorite. Basically, since this movie got announced since the whale got announce that Brendan Fraser's playing a 600-pound man and then right after that subsequently he's being cast in Martin Scorsese movies. He was in the Steven Soderbergh movie like his stock is only on
the rise. Right now, I'm going to have him As will win when it comes to Paul Mescal, I love the comparison to call me by your name Timothy Salome it's like hey let's once again like a Brian Tyree Henry, put them on your radar but Brian Tyree Henry's been around. It's like more pop Brian Terry's more like hey like he's potentially a leading man in the future, right Palmas call. He's already a leading man, like Timothy xiaomei already bled, call me by your name and now it's more.
Like, I can't wait to see what they do. Next, Salome only, I can't wait to see him, dude. Soon. I can't wait to see Paul Mescal be in the sequel to Gladiator. Like you're not saying that about Brian Tyree, Henry. You're not saying like I can't wait for him to appear in eternals to no one is saying that about Brian Tyree Henry. Then you look at Bill Nighy, dude. No offense to Bill Nighy. Thanks for coming up. I loved him in about time machine about time. No, but I know the movie.
I thought you're gonna say holiday. Do you know the ending of about time? That's the one with Gleason. Domino Gleason. Yes. Do you know the ending of that? But I heard it's really sad. It is crushing I will never watch it again. I will write a blog on the on re-watch balls for about time even though it's spectacular. I wept like an absolute baby boy, dude. Like that was Devastating of an ending but also it was just, it was natural, it felt right? And it was all my God, you got
to watch that movie, Ricky flex. But like Bill Nighy living, that's just like a classic. When you look back at 10 years, you're like that movie exists. What is that? You know, Bill Nighy, we know but like what is that? You know I hate to say this but I think the butler will win. I just hate that. That doesn't sound right. Like you just imagine the picture of Frazier and keep quiet. Guan after the Oscars.
Like that's already written in stone, but it seemed but honestly, the Oscars, they kind of don't know how to read a room. So it's like everyone knows Elvis wasn't a good movie and everyone wants Brendan Fraser to win. So it seems like something the class like a classic Oscar decision where they give it to the guy, everyone they think wants to win, right?
Which is Austin Butler, rather than Brendan Fraser even though Brendan Fraser is the one that people are drawn to, but like, Brendan Fraser has the Oscar ish bait. You know, that goes with that rule you put on the Prosthetics, he's putting this overweight person. Pandemic type of theme to The Garb and a bug type of story that's going on there and then Austin Butler.
Yes. Like you can look back at Rami Malek is Freddy Mercury but like I don't think it's that much me and Ray Charles, they honored to. So like, I see that too. But like Taron egerton, they didn't. So it's like, are they gone? Like are they done on a musician now? Because we have so many coming, it's like I feel like if it's doesn't happen now it's not going to happen later. So to me it's like rent. Brendan Fraser is also a similar story to kyi Kwon where it's like this.
It's impossible not to root for this guy. I think Brendan Fraser sent a good job on his campaign Trail aside from now attending the Golden Globes even though that was like a personal decision obviously with his past and its really gonna attack you. That's another thing. You got the SAG, though. He's good. He's gonna win. He is like he is going to win but I like yeah. Okay, yeah, I don't really get the win. Frazier is gonna win. Yes, fat fast ball in the paint, dude.
That's what we're looking for here. Just like it's Frasier was going to win. Yes. And it's gonna be a wonderful Oscar moment. I feel like it's you need to have chi-wai Quan when you need to have Brendan Fraser win for me to consider it like hey that was a successful Oscars. You didn't screw it up that bad between uh officially changed it. Ricky Flex. Next up, best actress we have Kate Blanchet for tar on a de
armas. And blond, blond has an Oscar nomination, holy shoot, Andrea riseborough. And one of the most polarizing / questionable campaigns that we've ever seen. For to Leslie. We have Michelle Williams for the Fable man's Michelle yeoh for everything everywhere. All at once, Ricky Flex. Why is Andrea riseborough going to win the Oscar? No, stop that. So voting ended today, March, 8th, when were recording this. Now I wonder if a single vote
winter. I think the campaign backlash, the hell am I, we didn't even go over that because we just didn't understand it. We're like, what's happening? They just campaign for her. Like, she just got her. And I, let me clarify most likely not her, but people in her Camp her agent and everyone else associated with this. Movie. Definitely just said, you know what? Let's get a campaign going, you know, it's put on some parties is put on some screenings.
Let's do whatever it takes. Let's get a nominee for our movie and it's clearly a on Andrea, Andrea riseborough and the movie. As I can. 99 Rotten Tomatoes certified fresh like heard. It's really good boring, but good, I have asked on it, no one saw, I haven't seen it. I'm not going to give her the benefit of the doubt. You're out your fifth and the power. Rankings here, best actress the armors. You are merely forth. How on Earth like that movie was
horrendous? I think it wasn't hurt problem. I think she was good in it. It's just that the directorial decisions, the writing decisions just went against her. The fact that she got nominated over like a Viola Davis. An Oscar darling is absurd to me. Michelle Williams, again. Thanks for coming out. I hate. What Steven Spielberg decided to do with your character? I know it's based off as real life, but my God, I hated that woman.
Hates a strong word did not like that woman and she disappeared in the third act strikes. He got shot also got a now, but again, Oscar darling. So it comes out to click Cate
Blanchett and Michelle yeoh. Six months ago or four months ago when Tower came out whenever that was, it seemed like it was literally a lock that keep planchette was going to win this award but it's like her and Todd field just went like just went to a silo and just decided not to campaign this year radio silent like why would you do that key planchette we talk to you as maybe as the goat and you just like you did you think you
already had it in the bag? What you did, but you have to still make appearances, Michelle yeoh Yo, on the other hand is like doing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, like redoing scenes in that she's on the campaign Trail non-stop attending all these award festivals, the Daniels, keyway Quan, Jamie Lee, Curtis Stephanie sewer, all praising her first, and foremost, after the Daniels like they are at.
8:24 is just they know how to run an Oscar campaign and the fact that they're doing this since April. Once again, is just the most amazing thing about all this. It. So that being said, Cate Blanchett deserves to win this award. I'm going to be angry if she doesn't win this award. I do think Ricky flex ik plan. Check why she's not doing this Oscar circuit because like she's capelin, shh, right?
And because she's like, this performance speaks for itself and I'm going to be like the other side of this argument. I want to see Devil's Advocate. I don't think we disagree in this regard. She Michelle yeoh is campaigning because she knows her performance wasn't as good as Cate blanchett's. Kate Blanchet is not campaigning because she's a now. Uh, dude, just like Lydia tar.
What DART is virtually like, I don't need to do this, you know, how it's like, you talk about, Austin Butler, how he's taking on these identity of Elvis during these press tours. And this campaign, like, Kate Blanchet, kind of, like, l'idiot
are words. Like, I don't care what you think, like, I was the best performance here and like, you can do all you want you, and you look back at Oscars history and you look and you say Michelle yeoh got it for everything ever all at once over Cape but a jet, you're gonna be that was You're going to say that was silly, you know, best picture the whole
different story for tar. Like I honestly like I think people are overriding tar a little bit like I think like people are like I think it's good. I don't think it's Godly and I think it's not like one of those Oscar movies where it's like you don't need to campaign for Best Picture. Kate Blanchet. Like also like Todd feel also wrote an incredible movie. He has people that ask questions regarding that we will talk about when I guess the best picture.
You know, just help me please. People like, as piqued interest right upon seeing it, but like, Kate Blanchet. You can see when you watch it, it's like that person. This is an Oscar level performance. Like, I don't think that, I didn't think that immediately with Michelle yeoh because it's such an unorthodox performance. And it's so much different elements that go into it or it's like Kung-Fu the emotionality. It's like the hardheadedness and
like the shifting of that. The Sir goes through throughout and the recognition of family. Like it's it's a good performance. It's a feel-good performance. If she wins the Oscar, it's a feel-good win, but it's not like the best performance that belongs to Caitlin, shh. Yeah, it made you feel great. When you watch Michelle. Yeoh, at the end of that movie. But like K players, shout. You're like, holy shit like this girl knows what she's doing. Yeah, I think there is weight to capelin.
Chateau, the similar to like a What's your name Frances? Mcdorman or a Meryl? Streep, where they might just be enough here and it makes me nervous that Michelle doesn't lose a lot though. That's why she's different a male strip. She doesn't lose like she does. But I also would just say, I think show, yo, again, like crashing higher Tiger Hidden Dragon, a lot of her roles just never been recognized as a first time. Is it going to be the feel-good? Oscars?
You got Kwon? Frasier yo, maybe Jamie Lee Curtis like I don't think so it's like you got to have a stopping point somewhere and I think Kaitlyn shuts. One of those words like you just got to recognize. Yeah, that was the best performance in my opinion of the Year. Male or female? Yes she was such an alpha in that movie. That's absurd. I can't wait till we talk about the best picture race because looking at the best pictures like you such an ass. Weird conglomerate of movies.
You have like Taro, which is like the prototypical, like Oscar movie. And I don't know how many people have seen tar, and I know it's not gonna be in abundance. Like we saw obviously with some Blockbusters that we got in that category this year, but it's a, it's such a varying and diverse group. All right, moving on here. So we done actor with that actress. We can go riding really quick before we go on to director and best picture. Ah, yes. Let's go here. Let's go.
Original screenplay. We got the Banshees of an issue and written by Martin McDonagh, everything everywhere. All at once written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Shiner, the fabled means written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner long time, dynamic duo tar written by Todd field that we just talked about triangles sadness, written by Ruben osland. I'll go first year live. You are talking about, I think everything everywhere all at once will win, right? I don't think it necessarily shoot with.
I think this is a common category where, man, it's tough because we're I think who will win usually goes to the movie. That's not going to win best picture, but it's like a close second or it's one. The academy. It doesn't have the balls to give best picture, so it's they decide to give it like an original screenplay. Or an adapted screenplay, and in my eyes, that would go to Tar liked our would be like that movie, right? So now I'm thinking about it. Who should win tard?
Like I said before, it had you asking so many questions. The dialogue sequences were absurd and who they were so impressive. I thought the pacing of that movie was so good, everything everywhere all at once. Unique, I think that's like the main word that comes up when people talk about everything everywhere, all at once.
It's a, I think this whole category is based off creativity and like the minds of those who are creating this story, maybe it's not as cohesive as a tartar, just seems so tight. And it seems so driven with the way it was made everything everywhere. All at once, just seemed like more of an explosion, it wasn't like that tight-knit story. Like we saw, it's like pretty much the antithesis of what we saw. Guitar, I think the momentum I'm going to start off with, who will win.
I think it's everything everywhere all at once. this is another interesting category, because Who will win, who will win? Original screenplay. So, the Riders go America's wgs, that's like the correlation here with the screen to screen play Awards and who 14 original screenplay as everything everywhere all at once and there's almost a direct one-to-one correlation with the Oscars and the wgs. So who do I think will win?
I think it is everything everywhere all at once but but I'm just thinking Academy does like Martin McDonagh, they do, so, I wouldn't be surprised if Banshee snuck in and one. I, that's the one I was excluding and it's an electric like a screenplay because of the dialogue. I find myself quoting that movie, I think the writing is so unique because it's so tightly into like tightly intertwined with like Irish culture and yeah, just continue, sorry like it. It's really good.
Yeah, like I kind of want to just because like everything overall wants I think will win best director, like spoiler. It's gonna win some of the big Awards here. So like do they want to kind of Eve like split the pie a little bit more and give one to Martin McDonagh? I'm gonna say yes, just to make things interesting. Give me banshees here for will win. Wow, it's so like you don't follow that line of saying like tar, it's not going to win best picture.
Therefore it's going to get like potentially some love for screenplay. Or do you think it has a chance to get love for the actor? I think we'll get love for the actor will just blanch at. Yes, I think it's they clearly value that movie because only the nominee for best picture and best best actress. But it's nominated for writing, it's nominated, for directing, and it's nominated for cinematography. So the big six, like big like big six awards that you be down before for movies.
It's got nominated for all of them, so they clearly love that movie. So, what I I'd be surprised if a taller one here. No, because who should win? I would say, tar our feel so real and I yeah that has to go the writing to like it's so based in 2022. It's so hard to find that when it comes down to, it's not afraid to base itself with a pandemic setting. It like just says, we are studying what cancel culture looks like in the world right now.
And it's not, it's there's very few movies that have attacked cancelled culture because it's a little bit taboo and it's hard and it attacked it head-on. And I think it's the best example of cancel culture on it, on the big screen in a fictional story like that we've ever seen. I think it's also because know, as I said before, like people don't touch it, you know, so I think it's should ruin it. It is like I said before you ask so many questions after that movie, where I'm like, is this
about cancel culture? Is it about someone handles? It is about how like the wrong way to handle it. Like it just like that's why I don't know. Sometimes like do I overate this movie? It's not as good as people say because like it's not answering any of those questions. It's just saying. Yeah this is what it looks like right now. That's it, you know. Ya gotta agree. Yeah, I think for me, I'm going to push back a little bit, I think tar out of all the best picture nominees, I think,
besides everything everywhere. That's that was probably my second. I thought this is the second best movie out of the best picture nominees this year. You love tar. Okay. Yeah, I'm a big fan. I have it in the low 90s. Okay. Yeah so I'm not as in love with you. Yeah not not you damn I'm not as in love with the movie. I'm not in love with. Movie as you. Who do you think? Should one do you think tar, should win for original screenplay? Do you think it should be banned
cheese or? But I think I appreciate the uniqueness of everything everywhere. But again, Bagel got two cute. Got to clever at points. I'm not as title Moslem. Yeah, not as tight to our unbelievable. Some people don't like the ending. I think. Yeah, sure it confused me. But at the end of the day, it all makes sense in a very clever broth. Yeah. Yeah. But like, looking at the other nominees here, like banshees, I want to say yes. But you know what?
Like sometimes you're your going and slow motion a little bit because look at the setting and look at what is just talking in the entire movie for the most part? And I think might work, done is great. I think the dialogue is great, but at the end of the day, like out of the five categories, like yeah, there's more entertaining movies on this on these nominees and I think Cars one of those with that dialogue. That's mm. So impressive by type field. Yeah, I think the dialogue I
think Incredible in the way. It's like portrayed on screen. It's like that combination of like what's written. And what is like trying to be conveyed and then like what is conveyed like from Kate Blanchet? I got so I think tar should win as well. I'm double up there adapted it was just go quicker. All Quiet on the Western Front. We got Glass, Onion top gun Maverick, woman talking and living.
Honestly, we class we class in my eyes like if top gun Maverick is being For best adapted screenplay. Like I feel like it has to get some type of love other than technical categories. I feel like it's a contender Glass. Onion is a sequel to Knives Out. I feel like Knives Out was a better written movie then knives than Glass, Onion, All Quiet on the Western Front. It's obviously adapting, a not a beloved, but like an admired anti-war War Story woman talking, I will it out and
acknowledge living. I will not acknowledge. Knowledge. I think it comes down to those three all quiet Glass Onion top gun Maverick. Damn, I'm not seen any of the favorites for this. I'm crossing Off, Top Gun like Top Gun. It can't win for a writing Top Gun. Can't win for writing. I can't, it's all quieting.
All quiets got to win best adapted, it's that, that is that is the who should win and I think will win woman talking is not going to win this Oscar. There's no way but it'd be so Oscars if it does win, you know what I mean? Where it's like, no one saw this movie. You're trying, but you're trying to like, say, oh, like it. Some story, unlike the empowering, the power of empowerment of women, and it's just like, ah, it might happen.
Like to me, it's just like, all quiet, is the clear pic here after breaking it down there in my head. I agree. All quiet should win this award. Very impressive, what? They've done three make a classic like they did classic book. Classic movie, unbelievable job, let alone, Netflix, let alone, the trailer was unbelievable and out of nowhere. And it, how good it is? How good it was? Yes, I think should win, but I'm gonna disagree push back a
little bit here. Now, one of the few movies, I haven't seen this entire Oscars list, all the nominees, one of the few less than a Movies, I haven't seen women talking is one of them and I'm telling you right now is the Belfast of this year. They are, the Academy has to acknowledge this movie, it's a passion historical project with a lot of Academy, Darlings, Frances McDormand, Claire Foy.
A lot of big-time producers behind this movie, huge, huge, huge topic, woman, empowerment in Hollywood. This is a clear movie, this nominated for best picture. They have to acknowledge this movie won't win. Best picture. Yes, the Belfast of this year, it's happy to be here but you have to acknowledge it and again, going back to the wga, The Writers Guild of America, strong correlation either that or the DJ's have the strongest correlation to the Oscars. Woman talking one for best
adapted, screenplay there. So I'm going to go woman talking will win. I will say, women talking has the biggest question marks out of any of the major categories here because there's so many I can say question marks again. But there's so much there was so much uncertainty on its release. No one has sought it be very Oscars if it want so it makes me think are they going to like like be the same?
Oscar's and take the movie that no one saw, or they going to go with the one that's been on. Netflix is November. I hear you. I think all quiet. I think it has a lot of positive momentum since it got a nomination. I think it's one of those movies that benefited from streaming and a movie that is like, kind of a Dark Horse. Now, for best picture. I think this is where it can get some love. It's adapted. So I'm that's why I'm going to keep it there, okay, I like the boldness.
Though let's go on a Best Director before we go on to our last category, we got Best Director, the Banshees of an issue and for Martin McDonagh, everything everywhere all at once by Kwan and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Shiner the Daniels but they will men's from Steven Spielberg tart, odd field, triangle sadness. Ruben awesome. Who will win? All right? Ricky Flex who do you have winning Best Director here?
It's got to be the Daniels. Yeah it's it has to be the campaign that we've mentioned throughout this entire Episode. The fact that they're Duo, they wrote the movie, The boldness uniqueness of the movie, I think this is open and shut case here. Daniel should and will win but don't be surprised if the academies like you know what Spielberg we love you passion project will give you this one. Good Daniels are also it's the
whole everything everywhere. All at Ones cast and everyone the staff everyone that's involved with that movie. Is like a feel good story, you know. And it feels like they have so much momentum that I didn't think they were going to be able to carry from their nominations but it's only gotten stronger. I think since then and it's going to help lead into our best picture. Let's go into the best pictures here.
Unless you want to talk more about Best Director like McDonough. Like he's kind of been shortchanged by The Academy of decent amount in his career, thus far the Fable man Spielberg everyone kind of Thought he was a prohibitive favorite for this award, but the lackluster performance at the box office, I think actually impacted Spielberg here. The fact that no one saw Steven Spielberg movie in theaters, on, or the autobiographical, like, type of movie. I think it's people were kind of
turned off by that Todd field. We talked about Todd field like, honestly like Pete. Like, if you are a cinephile, you're going to say Todd field, should win this award. You know, if you are just a common man. In the Oscars. And also maybe not an Aficionado. You might say, like, Daniels over Todd field, I know Ricky flips you re Oscar Aficionado as display at the beginning of this podcast, but I think the Daniels did something special with this movie.
The fact this movie has gotten this far with like the concept that it had its they're Visionaries dude. They really are like that movie is. So, unlike everything else on this? Everything everywhere. And then triangle sadness, I such a hard time getting through that. I started twice stopped, Midway both times because I fell asleep, but I'm kind of glad I didn't make it because of the explosion literally in the third at second, and third acts of
that movie. I think it has interesting Concepts do it. I think he has interesting themes that are relevant to like this day and age and I think I have Really, you're impressive young performers in Triangle of sadness? To I think Harris. Dickens is gonna be a monster. I think he's going to be someone who we take away like from the Oscars going forward. Like this guy's going to be a big deal similar to like how we look at what Paul Mescal coming off his nomination for after
son. You know I think he's got like a Dickens is going to be one of those guys and I think like the satirical aspect of it. The Oscars hasn't been that open to like satirical type of films. So, I think I also has a goat against didn't know any thoughts on triangle stands for keep going. Did not like that.
Didn't like it. I thought all around I see what it was trying to do. Might have worked for some people, but I think yes, it had its moments where I enjoyed it and I thought it was clever and there's moments a lot of moments where I was just so against the movie. I just didn't like it whatsoever. And even the third act, I just was not a fan of on that island. So yes, I do agree with a hair stick and I was Gettin It Sharlee but Dean Creak who's yayan that before he passed away
tragically last year. Oh my god, I didn't even know that what. Yeah, yeah, I'm pretty. Now you got a double check. I'm double-checking it. But I'm pretty sure like there was someone died. I should. Yep. That obviously 92022. How old is she 32? Oh my God. But that's obviously something that's been a driving force here, as in, like sense of emotion with this movie. But end of the day, did not like the movie. I liked her. I liked her stickers and David de Lyon.
I think it's overrated in this performance, but was very good. But yeah, movie didn't work for me. Okay. Let's go on the best picture here. Everything everywhere. All at once is a strong favorite here, but let me just run through the nominees. All Quiet on the Western Front. A pick by some people. Upset everything everywhere all at once. I don't think it should honestly but we also have a matar the way of water, bench, definition Elvis, the Fable means tar, top gun Maverick sneaking in
Triangle of sadness. That is the one that really snuck in alongside women, talking women, talking and nominated best picture. Holy crap, like, literally less than 1,000 people saw that movie. I mean, it's going to be everything ever all at once. It is, it feels like the beautiful. The momentum that banshees had has been lost. Since the nomination tar, has even lost more momentum in my eyes. I think all quiet as I said before, it's kind of like vaulting a little bit.
Like it's not it's no longer like towards the back half of this list. I think it's on the front half, honestly, Top Gun, like that is everyone's watching the Oscars. If Top Guns vying for best picture, right? That would be so great. And Wish they was a stronger campaign for Top Gun. If there was a strong campaign, like, like Tom Cruise, was that advocate for winning best
picture. I think it would cause viewership to go up. And people would recognize that man, this is a big deal like what if we gave it the Top Gun but now it gets to a point where if Tom Cruise isn't putting the effort in, when he puts his effort into everything, he does it shows how little he cares about the Oscars and therefore
it's got zero shot. it's gonna be like, who will win is everything everywhere, but Ricky Flex, who do you think should I don't love this list by the way, it's looking back on this list for best picture. It's not good tonight. It really is not like Elvis. Yeah, movie Avatar to like great technicals triangle sadness. I just talked about women talking, no one's seen it. Fable means that was good.
I think that deserves the best picture nod but not winning and then you have Maverick, which is a great movie, everyone loves it, but it's a Blockbuster at the end. I think people love it too much. I don't think that's good as like the overwhelming majority things and then banshees tar is still his not a way to and then I'll quiet like that like, you
know the technicals once again. But I also want to say it feels like Dune of last year or two years ago where it's going to win a lot of. The cause I think. But and the International International big favorite will win international and I think honestly that's the biggest Contender to everything right now. I think Dan she's is falling off. It's hard. They're not trying Maverick. They're not trying fail woman's phone off and then the rest of the movies just aren't up to par.
So I think all quiet is the only other possible. So if you were to throw any money on, this isn't everything. Everywhere it would have to be all quiet for plus fourteen hundred, but I'm not recommending that. I guess if I was to give a second place to be Banshees, You know, I'm still gonna stick with that as like, who should win, but like, as time goes on, I'm not loving this list whatsoever.
Like, who I want to win, is top gun Maverick, because I think it would be amazing for movie theaters if it won best picture, but like that's different than, who will win, who should win and who I want, you know, like everything everywhere going to win. It was should win. I think, probably banshees, I think there's such a there's a crowd out there who looks at banshees and it's like, that's the movie. I had a good time watching.
That's the one that wasn't recognized by any IP and I still like return to on HBO Max and I've watched once twice three times already since it's been out and it's it feels relatable. There's so many people like compared to like like the Fable men's feels a little pompous right by the fact that Fela Spielberg, That movie I think that's what's turn people off
rodent. Yeah. And people are kind of like sick of people telling their own stories because they can't think of another type of Adventure or like classic Spiller movie to go on here, like for himself. And in Top Gun Is Not Top Gun on like Elvis is Elvis with baz luhrmann, very polarizing, figure Avatar polarizing movie despite how well it did at the box office is no shot.
It was just like kind of a hey, we Understand how big Avatar was, we're going to give it to also to a way of water and like if I see Avatar way of water, getting nominated for best picture. I'm like, why didn't and gamed get nominated? That's like what I think about it, too. I'm just, yeah, it's James Cameron but like, endgame was the most relevant movie since
Avatar but like not, it's more. So relevant just cut me a lot of money obviously related to Avatar, but like who it draw drew people theaters and makes me think looking at this list, what movies are going to exist? 10 years from now. And people look back at like, oh my God, that movie ruled you
know, I'm in the same boat. My last comment will be that London, talking back on it. I think Top Gun Mavericks going to be the one where it's I think everyone remember Avatar way of water just because it's Avatar. Loopy loopy people we keep building off the franchise, right? But I think the only other one that people are going to really truly remember and go back to is going to be top gun. Maverick the rest of this list will not.
And when we look back at this, Oscars, We're not gonna give the Blockbusters the best picture as in the academy. So we're going to look back at this winter and be like, oh, that won an Oscar, huh? Like, it's gonna look back at 20, 22. Went to 2023. I think wow. Just what a weird time and that's what I think it's going to happen in 10 years for relevancy purposes. Like do you think everything everywhere will have a spin-off or a movie or sequel that builds
off of it? I think the Daniels are too creative to just try to create IP from this. They denied Marvel for god sakes because they wanted to be so creative. Like I think they want to keep being original and keep doing new work, okay? Just made me think because I'm trying to think of like how everything everywhere stays relevant.
And how it's not just a product of the time period you know how it's like, okay, Multiverse and this is like big in the now right now, you know, boom okay everything everywhere all at once going to win best picture, then the second straight feel-good movie to win.
