Is the Dallas Cowboys dot Com Draft show. Cowboys on the our war room for in center news and draft analysis, Dallas Cowboys Select Ezikie Elliott and now your hosts Dane Brugler, David Hellman and Brian brought us. Well, it's day two of the draft show here in Mobile, Alabama. Brian brought us Dane Brugler, David Hellman. We had fool pads practice today, boys, to get something out of that today. There yet of sound effects from popping those pads. Yeah, No, it's always good.
Day two. See the progression from day one? Who made improvements? Who kind of built on a strong practice on Tuesday and Wednesday? I thought a few people did a few of these players, I thought, Will her Nandez, I think that's a player room. You're talking about a lot today and really through the process. Will her Nandez to me, I think that he needs to enter the conversation as the best non quarterback here. I think that he belongs
in that conversation. Will Hernandez utep guard, Yes, quarterback, it's the best non quarterbacks. The quarterbacks. We could debate all day about open a show with that. Yesterday I was about to say So are you saying like a quarterback is just heading shoulders better than everybody else here. Yeah, I want you to say that just for the sake of conversation. Well, no, and I think that you know,
when you factor in the value of the quarterback position. Sure, you know, Baker Mayfield, to me, it is the best player down here. But not to go down that road staying out of that just when in regards to Will Hernandez, I think the best the conversation, but the best non quarterback here he belongs in that conversation. M And I'm not sure he is going to be the highest drafted non quarterback. That's probably gonna go to Marcus Davenport, who
has been up and down this week. Trades are obvious, and that's why he's going to be drafted, more so than the production and the player that he is. Uh, you know, he's a very unseasoned player. But you see the trades and get excited about that. But best player will Will Hernandez is in that conversation. Did you agree with that? No, I'm proud of you for saying that. There you go. Now we're about to say, no, I think you're no. I mean, you know what I was, I'm,
I'm I'm I appreciate you saying that. I really really do Davenport scare you. I mean, I mean he's talking about him what I've seen. Yeah, I mean, we're we're talking about a guy that coming into the draft show. I mean, he hash It feels like every draft show we're talking about Davenport. But but but he but he's a guy that we were kind of hopeful that would come to the Senior Bowl and would dominate. And I haven't seen a dominant player here. I really haven't see.
I don't know. Maybe my expectations are different. I didn't. I don't know that I expected him to dominate. I'm just a guy Arrange, you know, a guy that was built as a project before we even got here, coming from UTSA. I didn't expect him to dominate. I like, I expect like a not that he's here, but a guy like Quentin Elson. You're like, you know, everybody was so high on Aaron Donald the year he right here. I expect him to dominate Zach Marton that year. Yeah, right,
I don't. I don't expect Marcus Davenport to dominate all. I mean, there's not there's not I expected tackles that he's going against. But even still, like like I said, I mean even before we got here, wasn't the talk like there there isn't a consensus on him, right, I think there was a consensus that he's a top fifteen pick, which I don't I want to say it's a consensus. I think a lot of people think that, yeah, that he could go that high. I think it's a consensus
that he's like, you know, a fifty type of guy. Yeah, sure, which, okay, I'm I'm more intrigued by the flash than expecting him to dominate. That's that's me. And so yes, I am scared of Davenport, but not more so than like any other guy like that. Like so much of this stuff is projection. It reminds me and this is before my time, but just the type of guy we're talking about, I'm reminded a little bit of a guy like Ziggyanza, where
you're like, the talent is freaky. That was one of my guys right there, talent freak and you're hoping that it pans out, and you know what, the film the film was really inconsistent at by you and he went yeah, yeah, that's Ziggy. Now it's a good comparison to ZIGGI was a guy who soccer player growing up. You know, the
football experience wasn't there, uh, young in football years. And that's the same thing with h with Davenport, who you know, he's a wide receiver when he showed up in college, you know, and he was a basketball guy mostly most of his life. So you know, we're still seeing that inexperience. We see the traits, it's easy to see that, but you also see the high pad level off the last image, especially at the point of contact. Uh. You see the lack of transition move to move. I mean, he's really
he relies on that power. Uh. And it's I think he's realizing this isn't the conference to us that oh no, he can't well he can't walk these tackles exact, or he can't capture the edge like he you know, he's got to come. It's a little bit like watching Taco. Remember how when Taco plays it was a why do
you keep trying to bring up last year? No, I'm just saying that when you talk about pad level, when you talk about rush down the middle, when you talk about have a counter move, and I guess that's that's kind of Now let me let me throw this at your rook finish your well. That's my point. Like, if you're if you're Aaron Donald or you know, if you're one of these like four year guys who just racked up every award at a major school, that's who I
expect to dominate. Some guy coming from the CUSA who was playing guys who are never going to play in the NFL for most of his career. I don't expect that guy to dominate against these guys. But we're talking about him as a potential top based on it. But that's a projection. Just wait to the combine when he jumps exactly. Take him at nineteen. If he was there everything you're talking about, you're I mean, that's that's kind
of if he were to slide through. If somebody doesn't like, you know, the things that we're talking about as as always, I'm gonna throw in you know, who else is there. But if you feel good about him, I'm not scared by the fact that he's a projection. If he was there and he's the best option, I would I would do it for sure, because I mean Ziggiansa turned into a hell of a pass rusher. Sure did. First year. I think he had twelve sacks. Its rookie year. TENA
was the second year, but it was first year. Yeah, I think he was the only player from the top ten of that draft that really panned out did anything twenty thirteen drafts. His nineteen is steal for him if he gets potentially, I mean, it's all based on potential, like you said, so, yeah, I think potentially he could be a steal at that point, which is why I don't think he'll be available. Uh. You know, every team
needs more pass rush help every team. So for him to last through the first eighteen picks, I think I don't see happening. But if he did, you know, you do you bring on another talk of Charlton. Uh yeah, see that's I'm saying. Though he's a better athlete, he's gonna tesk. Does the value of him if he had nineteen just make you have to think about it. I would much rather have a ready made guy. That I mean, and that's all always been my argument. In the first round.
I want the ready made player, but I don't I'm not scared off by by his Rawness is what I'm trying to say. Okay, if it was him or Hurst? Oh see, I you're you're talking about pass rushers. I'm just talking about defensive lineman, right, No, I know, well, but you're I mean, you're talking about guys you're paying to go get the passer. I think the ceiling of Davenport is awfully intriguing compared to you know, what you get in Hurst. That's not a knock on Hurst, if
he's what you hope he can be. You're talking about double digit sacks and defensive line or defensive end, doesn't you know, jump out at you as a top need for this team. But all right now, when you think about insurance for uh, you know, losing the Marcus Lawrence insurance for who the heck knows about Randy Gregory, you know what I mean? That's that and I need to get to that today. Yeah, I mean, but so you're
adding a pass rusher like that. It might not be the number one need, but sure another more pass rushing death. It's definitely on the list of needs. Fill me in with Stephen Jones said about Randy Gregory today, there's nothing to fill you in on he you know, the Joneses. The Joneses are very good about giving long and winding answers, useful answers to most of you know, the things you ask,
sure which you know they're reporter's best friend. Asked about Randy Gregory and Stephen Jones basically was just like, nope, nothing, no update, got nothing and that was about it, which you know, you know, in the in all of the in the grand scheme of things that owners and general managers know about their team, I'm sure that he knows a little bit more than nothing, but nothing that he wants to share, which goes back to my point that
what's what's his plan to spring Stephen Jones Steve Stephen Jones, Well, it very similar, you know, you get the very similar answers, which is you know he actually he said between DeMarcus Lawrence m Za, Zack Martin, Anthony Hitchins, and David Irving. Oh so he had Anthony Hitchins as when he mentioned he mentioned Hitchens and Irving as I mean, just he's it's gonna be a hell of a challenge to keep the guys that are already on our team, let alone
go shopping for other people's players. So draft will be a player here always. That's and he you know, he said, we're going to work the edges and whatever opportunities might present themselves. So like he kind of gave himself some caveats that, you know, if things fall the right way, maybe you'll see him do some stuff. But for the Seattle safety, maybe in mind. If I'm not trying to put words in the guy's mouth, but he kind of
left himself a little caveat there. But I think one way or another, this is going to be a team that's trying to build through the draft for the fifth year in a row. I would be I would be shocked to see them spending big amounts of money on free agents just and other than their own obviously Ridley or Davenport. You go straight from that into that, Yeah, yeah, I'm taking Ridley. But I mean, you know how I
feel about Ridley. I know you do. That's why I always like to know how you guys are feeling about these players. I want to see commitment. That's what you see in a draft room. It's I want to see commitment. It's erie that you said that, because in my commitment on Phillips. Now when you're asking I know that. Yeah, I know, you spent fifteen minutes rank his DTS. That's good.
He's a good at his job. I was thinking when you were asking me about Davenport, between the project of Davenport or Calvin Ridley, who will assuredly be one of the best two receivers on your team right away. I'll take Ridley every time. And that's not a knock on Marcus Davenport or any other raw player, but I'm just I'm such a fan of the ready made guy. Like, what what did Zach Martin do for this team immediately?
You know? And I mean it's hard to find talent, and it's hard to find that player, obviously, I know that, but that's what I want. They were they were going to take Chazer by the way. I mean, he was another one who contributed from David, especially for this team and the way they're set up. I mean this, Yeah, for sure, this is a team ready to win now. So you know, if you can add a Calvin Ridley who instantly is your z and you know, upgrade over
Terrence Williams. You know, I do that in a heartbeat, But who knows if they agree, you know, I it's a hard thing seeing this team go wide receiver in the first round, even though yeah, you said you wouldn't do it wide receiver, Yeah, Calvin ridden would Yeah what position was he? Offensive line? Offensive line? I'm taken off time. I'm sorry. I'm not dropping an offensive lineman in the first round for this team just because I feel good
about uh, you know fifty year hitting that all day? Well, why don't her Nandez is not playing like a player is gonna last to fifty? Yeah? Uh, you know, Isaiah Win to me, like, all right today when I do my top fifty list, will her Nandez and Isaiah Win will both be probably in the top forty to forty five somewhere. So for them to be available at fifty, you're crossing your fingers, your toes, and every part of
your body to make to hope they get there. Uh. And it's still early, you know, wor Oh No, I'm just I love having away. I love having fun doing this. But no, right now, like I said about her Nandez, uh he just he had one bad rep today. Yeah. Jalen Holmes DEFENSI vendor from Ohio State, got him when he caught her Nandez off balance a little bit. But besides him, that's the only time I saw Hernandez get beat. You saw power, he saw quickness to be the ability
to reset on the move. Uh. With her Nandez, you're getting a plug and play player who, again three hundred forty pounds, doesn't eat a lose weight. He carries it well. Power, scheme, zone, scheme whatever. You know, why can't he do either? I you know, I have yet to for someone to give me a reason why he can't. So scheme versatile A big fan of are you? Would you be surprised if somebody took him in the back of the first round? No, none at all. I mean, like I said, you said
forty five somewhere right. I haven't mapped it out yet, so I'm not sure exactly, but you know, I absolutely mean you. Okay, let's just think about the guards that have gone in the first round, the late first round in past years. Um, the forty nine ers took Josh Gardinette, right a couple of years ago. Stanford Hernandez is better than just absolutely lamp was back in the first round, wouldn't he. No? He was early second Yeah, the injured
injured right. Yeah, for the Chargers um Laken, Tomlinson, Thompson the Lions a couple of years ago. Will her Nandez is better than Thomlinson in my opinion. Yeah, we've seen some guards, you know, some of those play those playoff teams kind of sneaking in the in the later portion, trying to help their offensive line a little exactly who could use some help in the offensive line, and you know they can go for a guard at that point. Will her nanda has absolutely could go in the first round.
So long way to get to that point. Any linebackers do anything for you today? Mike McCrae from Michigan, Maybe anything from him. You know, I thought he played well in terms of, uh seeing it and going and getting it. You know, he doesn't play with much hesitation. Yeah, down him a downhill player, right, yeah, that's probably where his best. And he can play linebackers. Now again, it's kind of a cowboy angle here. But you're trying to think about
we were talking about last night. There might not be where you know, I mean personally, I just trying to make yourself feel better about the linebacker pool. I'm trying to because all of a sudden, you know, I'm having dinner with you guys, and we talk about linebackers, and they were like, who are they? You know, And I'm watching I'm watching, you know, Mike McCrae play, and I'm watching Nike La the Luca and you know, I'm trying to figure out. I mean, I'm not, yeah, any and
you know, but I'm better. No, no, I'm not. But yeah, but fourth round. But that's what I'm saying, is is it how much success that the Cowboys had taken a third, fourth? Okay, Andy Hitchen, fourth round? Yeah? But but where has the fourth, third, fourth, fifth linebacker round done for the Cowboys? Where's that done? Where? Where has it? Where? Where's it been profitable? Yeah? They need to so all of a sudden matter again we're
talking about it yesterday. Do you need to find a way if there's one of those linebackers is there at fourteen? You know, you don't want to give up assets to go up, but you might have to. If I'm trying to talk into Mike McCrae and I'm trying to talk into Nick de Luca, what would round were talking? Because to me, like McCray is more of a he's a Day three guy. He's not a top one hundred player. Okay, Uh, de Luca worried about his medicals a little bit. Okay.
North Dakota State linebacker missed all of last year with a knee and then his past year. Uh got to the ball today and you said he got an interception interception today, So yeah, I think there's a linebacker. Did you see Trey Williams at all? Auburn line Yeah. I was trying to find him and I didn't. He didn't show up like he did yesterday. For me, that's not a good sign. Though. Well no, I mean I was trying. Well, if you had to try to find him, that's not
a good sign. Bad. There's a lot of going on out there right now. There is a lot going on. Did you watch Trey Williams today Auburn linebacker? No. I focus more on different players in positions, so I did not watch it. I'm gonna derail the conversation a little least.
Do I know this is the Draft show? But it just makes me think, you know, what strategy have we seen from this team over the course of the years, Like they try not to go into a draft with a layering problem, right and like so so who's going to be the bridge player and we need to stop doing that. I have a hard time expecting them to sign Anthony Hitchins. I just think the price would be too high, which but there's got to be somebody else
out there. And yeah, I agree with you. The bargain bin stuff has not been working, which is why it would be nice. And there's so much work for them to do before that point. But maybe they can just sign a free agent that they feel good about for a change, you know, like spend a little bit more than you're used to so that you're not stuck in this situation where it's like, well there would be a Jermaine Edmonds goes off the board. I guess we're just gonna have to hope Sean Lee Stay is healthy or
elsewhere screwed. That's the wrong attitude, I think, No, it is the wrong attitude. That's what I'm saying. That's why they probably need to do something before the draft. It might come down to what they really feel about Jalen. You know, we know what they say, but how do they really feel about the player it'll be going up at eighteen? Yeah, well I will see. Yeah, we know what they say. But I have Well, I mean, you're you're hopeful, You're hopeful beyond the record conversations are a
lot more positive than the real conversations. And that's not just about Jalen Smith. That's just about that's true players and teams in general, you know. So, yeah, And you'd be foolish to not ensure yourselves against that, even if he is gonna play like an all pro, which is you know, I would be, there's gonna be there's gonna be movement at that position in the spring before the draft, I would bet. Just again, that's Oh, you'll know what's gonna happen when you get to you when free agency
opens in March. You're gonna know what's happened with with Hitchens early. Oh yeah, I think you'll know, really, or you'll know before the draft. Well know, Annony Hitchins will have a deal with somebody. We might will be get the combine probably within a week. You're within a week of the new league year. A true or false? Where we are right now, the Cowboys will draft a linebacker in the first three rounds. True. True, Okay, but see
I can't but see fine. One That's what scares me is a true, and then I'm like, okay, Brian, you said true. You've given me four names that I feel good about, and after those four, I feel real bad based on what you guys are telling me and what I've seen with my own eyes. Quan Tremaine, Edmunds and then probably Jewel and then maybe Matthews. Maybe I need to watch him myself. But Williams. Yeah, I'm sorry, William William excuse me. Matthews is a safety from Auburn. Got it? Yeah?
That's here we go. They're both named Trey, aren't they. Yes, that's there. They're spelled differently. That's not that's not my fault. That's there. One's tra Ones tra Y. That's too much, it is. Did I find my swing tackle today in Brandon Parker from North Carolina's at? Uh? Did you? I don't know. Did you think of that highly of him where he could fill that role? Yeah, you're gonna have to get him. Hi. You around on him by the way to give him a third? Okay, here we go.
Will you like them? Right? Yeah? I did? Well? I did, And all of a sudden, everybody reminds me of Chaz Green. Yeah, we Chah Green with to Florida with the North Carolina A and T Hey no offense, guys, Hey last day, And tell you what I like the kid? Yeah? Yeah, what's his name from Hicock's freet Cohen. There we go. I'll tell you what I like the kid playing today? Yeah, I really did. I like the way he played left tackle played right tackle. I know we've talked about him.
You brought him up before I brought him up yesterday. I mean, he's a trades player. You could see how he is raw in areas, but at that size, the movements, Uh, you like the sixty seven three h three not mad No, No, I can work with that. You like the player he can grow in. Yeah, And you say I'm gonna have to go to the third to get him because I need to study him right now. Based on tape game A third fourth, okay, so, and based on how he's playing this week, I'd say that's probably more of a
three than a three to four. We'll see what does it them. So, if I take a guard, if I take a guard in that second round, if one of those, if I find a starting guard, if I take win or her nandies, some sometow somehow ends up there. Yeah, I'm gonna take a swing tackle in third round, not unless you are really worried about Tyrone. And you know what you should be. Are that worried? Where you gonna take a time? Just think it about what are you
going to do in the bat with the back. I'm maybe it's maybe it's And I just said, you know, you need to cover yourself in all instances. But I'm just I'm not panicking about Tyranson. Okay, I'm not. I'm with you, I'm not. He's twenty seven years old. I'll remind you, guys, hey, and I'll that's I'll eat every bit of that crow. And I still, you need to address the position. You don't really have one right now.
I get that, but let me ask you this more important to find a starting left guard or more important to find a backup for him starting a suitable one starting guard? I feel more and going back to that, I feel more comfortable addressing all of the offensive line stuff in free agency with cheaper guys than I do linebacker,
you know what I mean. Like, I think, whether it's Jonathan Cooper, whether it's another journeyman, whether it's Byron Bell or a guy like him, I think you can get by with that as opposed to trying this position held you hostage. Uh didn't, Linebacker two. That's my point and I feel better addressing that and relying on the talent around those guys. Then lineback Brandon Parker, I kind of liked you today, North Carolina, A and T hell you bring them on. I'm not I'm not poop poo in that.

So that'll be a lot of fun. Okay, now we're gonna get into a little twitter on the twenty David Hellman, please take it away. Y'all know how I love segues. So a friend of the show, Marcus, set me up for this really well with what Dan was talking about in the first segment. Who is a better fit for the Dallas line? Between Isaiah Win and Will Hernandez, the two guards who are showing out here, I'll tell you what one of them is. One of them is the
Hernandez to me is I do not see it. I see a guy that has the capability of movement, and I mean movement as far as getting on the edge, getting on the second level and getting into blocks and finishing blocks. He's a three hundred and forty pound man. The other man is three hundred and five. I want to say he's six zero two three. One is physically imposing, the other is a really good lighter athlete. And so if you told me the way Jerry Jones would think.
He believes in keeping the front of the pocket firm. If you give me, you give me her Nandez, Frederick and Martin Dak Prescott could step up all day and throw the football and I and I think that either way you go would be fine. But if you gave me a choice between the two, I will take. I will take the physically bigger guy. One thing I love about will her Nandez, and you saw it in practice today. If he's a finisher, he's a mean, nasty dude. And I mean that you can tell you can tell im possible.
He's a guy that like there were times BJ Hill they go head to head and BJ Hill is just like what do I have to do? Yeah, Like like don't rush him down the middle. Defensive tackles were getting frustrated over and over and over because will her Nandez he blocks through the echo of the whistle right and he's not done. I mean his film show that too. He's to focused, laser focused on his opponent and just beating him to the ground until the echo of the whistle.
So I would agree with you. Power quickness, Uh, you know, it's all there. But you know the thing too about win really, I mean you can I said the other day his uniform is never dirty. I'd never see him on the ground. And that was a left tackle, and that's a left tackle and the like kick slide, get outside, take guy, push guy. Why guy tries to go back inside? Take him out? Now, I don't know. I don't know if Hernandez could be a tackle. He's a guard only now if you had to play, if you had to
play win and a pinch at tackle. I don't think he kills you. He had overt We've seen him do it. He did a fifteen He started fifteen games this year for the SEC champs and almost national champ. One of these guys love versatility, position flex, position flex. You're absolutely right, Um, a lot of peez they love position flex. Give me the better player guard, Yeah, no, And I agree with
that for what it's worth. Um. A lot of people have asked me, and Tyler being one of them, want to know about Iowa hawkeye Aquham Wadley wrote about him tonight that good huh. I wrote about him tonight. He was one of my guys that you can go ahead, Dane, you can you can fire away at him. Well, you know, it's tough in these all star settings to really get a feel for running backs, just because so much of the running back position is you know, feel, and you
know in a game setting you can see that. We're in these practice settings, you know, it's all it's half speed, it's uh, you know not. They're not full tackling out there, so you know, he doesn't have a chance to break tackles right because these guys aren't trying to finish him to the ground. Um. But where you did see where it as valuable with the running backs two areas pass protection, Yeah, blocking there you go, and then catching the ball out of the back there you go. You like you saw. Yeah.
Let me tell you this, though, I was impressed with this guy. He's got traits of a complete back, he really does. And the thing that really impressed me, I thought that he could take it in side or outside with effectiveness. Sometimes guys could take it inside, but when you ask him to bounce, can't get to the corner. This guy get to the corner though. I think he's got a combination of quickness. He's got a combination that
quickness and power with the ball in his hands. I was impressed with his running style, the way he's able to when he hits it, he gets through. I mean he is a attack the line go and you know, get the secondary and second level guy. And you're talking about the pass box stuff the catch. Give me that he's got those traits of a complete back. I don't know if he's a Bell cow back. We don't need a Bell cow back, but he is him and the
LSU kid, Daryl william him and Darryl Williams. Of the two guys i've seen it this of this and the San Diego State kid. We talked about Penny, but Penny. What happened to Penny today? On the past, I was gonna say Penny is the best running back here just based on the tape and everything that we know coming in right, but throw down. You put Penny in the game, can you trust him to pass bat? When you talk about pass blot this is Dave appreciate that Penny's not
worth a nickel hey catching, So huh, go ahead? You might use that one to night. Hi might? Yeah, please do pass protection. And then he put the ball on the ground a few times. Oh today, you know, Dane kind of looked over me one time. He goes see that and I'm like, yeah, but that's a penny. Is the best back here is the problem? Not the problem, but Wadley and Williams. To me, I'm looking for a
guy that could help Zeke. I want. I think Williams could be an every down player though myself Williams, and that's not because he's an LSU guy. I'll put on my tiger half for a second and just say he's a damn good running back who has been stuck behind two of the best running backs to come out of college football. LSU uses him. They used him terribly for his Do you see the place he was making on
the in the in the red zone? They really catches they throw at me, They adjusted the ball he's running up. I mean, I'm like, where was that? When you're playing again Tennessee, Florida Auburn. They let him do something I was gonna say when not as much as he did today when was off the field, there wasn't how much drop off when he's you know, in turns of production. I mean, he more than held his own and when he got opportunities at LSU, he took advantage in especially
his past year. I don't I don't like two grade players because I'm not a scout, but I'm he's he's If he's still there in the late and after the fourth round, I would be surprised. Yeah, I mean I think he's a Day three guy. I don't think we're talking about were talking about william I'm talking about Williams. Where did you put Wadley? Yeah, well yeah, well that's one. I'm just curious, just based on taping him at three four,
Go see that's where do he take these backs. I'm not comparing him to Kamara, but we thought Kamara was better than where he was taking him, and I think we did to be fair. He was what pick sixty seven? No, but I mean you say pick sixty seven, that's the top one hundred pick. I mean that's the third round though round Yeah, yeah, I hear you. But you know, there a lot of these juniors entering the draft pushed these seniors down, and a guy like ok, Wadley kind
of gets forgotten about a little bit. But he's a good player and he's showing it this week. And that's what I love to hear because I think this team needs another running back all they will and and they I think that maybe maybe this will be a position. It stretches a little bit, I hope. So one thing with Wideley was surprised he'll be to just real quick. One of these backs will be cheerleading for in the draft, you know, like we always do. They always be a
Dane will go, Dane, Who I go? Dan? Who's your best left? Well, I've got you know he'll he'll stop three. Yeah, and we'll all I will all be cheerleading for a guy with Wadley buck eighty eight. I'm surprised by that. Yeah, he's not a big guy. I'll tell you what, though he's a good player. Though he's a good player, I agree, and I mean I you know, watching him with it again, the ball inside outside. They tossed him the ball one time that he was to the corner and around the
corner before they knew it. They couldn't react fast enough. If you didn't know a thing about these running backs coming into the week, didn't have any perception of this running back class, Yeah, how would you rank these running backs? I don't think Penny would be in your top. I don't think he would either. Edo Smith from Southern missus had a good week. I can't get his helmet confused because it looks like Watley's helme at the Iowa helmet
at the Black five. Ye. Yeah, it's bad among other things. Yeah. Um, but no, I don't think I would have Penny in my top I wouldn't have him on my top three. I wanted to love Penny just because he's a super talented dude. He obviously accomplished a lot in college. But again, yeah, I'm thinking about this in terms of what helps the Cowboys. I don't need a dude who can just run like I don't. I need give me the complete guy I need. I need a guy that brings something else to the table.
And it's not that Zeke can't do that stuff, but I already have a guy that's gonna run the ball. How about a guy that can help you in special teams too? That toobo, a guy that could play a couple of special teams while you're at it, and not a guys can stand up there next to the special team. You know, going back to Darryl William, guy that spent most of his career as the number three running back. You know, he knows how to do. Get after you get Darryl Wims in the sixth round. Yeah, I'm here
for it. I think he's better than that. Um, I'm biased. He's gonna run a four to six four and now we'll take him. That's fine, Josh, Ye, A lot of people catches the ball well, A lot of people want to talk about James Washington understandably, so uh and we talked about this yesterday, but Josh wants a little more info on on James Washington's route tree. Just how y'all feel about, you know, the polished aspect of him. The film is always really good at him running down the
field catching the ball for seventy yards. Yeah, the film is real good in doing that. The film is verticals digs. Well, I kind of sounds like it kind of sounds like a guy that we have, right, he's shown and I said that former Baylor, I no, no, former former Oklahoma State cowboy. Well with the other guy, I think James Washington is Terrence two point zero. That's my opinion. Catches the ball better. Oh and I'm okay better, He's a better, better hands catcher. Has he looked better here in terms
of route running? The kid that's look the best is your Penn State, lad, So you're not you're not answering Josh's question, tell me answer he does. No. I think he has looked better because he is. He looked better than who's looked better than? Yeah, than his tape. I think he has day Sean Hamilton's been the best wide to see we're talking about James Washington. Okay, I just
want to make sure you know who I talked. I think James Washington has looked better than his tape in terms of his route running and his releases because there has been spacing between him and these corners. I think he's done a nice job. So why don't we see that on tape? Well, he runs and I can't wait to get back to the Star and sit down and
watch this practice tip. I'm gonna see that. I'm gonna see this separate because when you watch him play down the field, Mason Ruff, it is a seventy yard pass and it's a catch and it's a touchdown. It's it's good. I'm all for that. But you're right, I mean that that was the one thing coming in. You said he's got to be a better route runner. Yeah, And I think you've seen that. I think you have seen that. I mean he's not this polished, refined route runner now,
but in two days of practice got done a nice job. Okay, again, it's like you know a quarterback who runs, you know, a certain offense. You know, he can only take snaps out of the shotgun. You know, he can't dictate you know what he's doing in terms of helping pro scouts evaluate his transition to the next level. Same thing with a wide receiver like James Washington, He's not going to tell the coach, well, you know, scouts want to see me do this and this, and you know he needs
to run the routes that are called for him. And that's what he did at with Cloma State and he did it really really well. Yeah, here he's taking advantage of it. And again I'm seeing consistent separation between him and corners. And it's not just the routes, but this is releases as well. You're seeing the physicality at the line of scrimmage escape in the in the big twelve free access here we go, they rarely press. We are
seeing that. And so for James Washington so far through two practices, I think he's done what he needed to don tested catches yesterday. Yeah, on comebacks, you see that, you know. But Brian's so gun shy about receiver at this point. He's just he's especially I'm not. I'm not, I'm not. You know. The the gun shy part of it is, I think this league is going to give me guys that could catch it short and run run after catch. Give me guys that could get open, that
could separate and run after catch. And I hear you, I mean the day of the big the big play, I mean the chunk plays or throw it underneath and run like hell. How about this stat for you? Okay, James Washington and College had thirty nine touchdowns over his career. Oh the average yards per touchdown it was forty two. Yeah, that's pretty good. Forty two yards per touchdown. That's you know,
that's the offense. We've watched the cutups together. Yeah, every the ball is going down the field, he's catching in and it's and there, and every end the shotguns are going off, you know. I mean, that's that's what he is. Shotguns. Yeah, I think they're six shooters at whatever. The shotguns. Yeah, why to West Virginia, that guy would yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly, mountaineer friend of the show, Bobby can have something real quick. Yeah,
if you move him up around James Washington. No, I mean I think he's come in and should go ahead of anybody else that you thought. Maybe he should not have been ahead of. No, because coming well, coming into the week, Anthony Miller, James Washington, Michael Gallery, I wish he'd have done. You know, I'm worried about the foot. Yeah, about that injury. We're we'll find out more at the combat was better yesterday too, by the way, than Washington.
Better better than what he did. Yeah, he didn't stand out as much today, I agree, But I think that's that's I was looking at. That was one of my main storylines coming into the week because with the wide receivers kind of separated. You didn't say that, And I think James Washington has not necessarily separated himself with the top guy here, but at least done enough where if you twisted my arm and made me say who's the best wide receiver here, I would lean James Washington. Hamilton
helped himself. I mentioned him, Oh yeah, oh yeah, you're Penn State guy. He's yeah, he's had he and he had another good day to day, at least from what I saw. He seems like he gets open every single time. With a wide receiver receiver position, he's not going to test overly well and he's not the biggest guy, But what are the two most important things at wide receiver? Can you get open and can you catch the ball? He does both, and he does both of those things.
And so we get caught up in the numbers and the measurables. But he's helped himself with He was in Tampa last week at the Shrine Game, comes to Mobile this week, and he's been terrific because he is creating that separation he's catching off his shoelaces to the ground. He is making those guys the body control and balance is really impressive. He is a small space player, and I love I love these guys that like ball out at the Shrine Game and they're like, well, why don't
you keep it rolling? Come on, come on? Not everyone does that. He's not on a bunch of lists. I know who he is now. There are some receivers who are just players in general who were at the Shrine Game or NFLPA and they got the call up to the Senior Bowl and they said, no, I'm good. I
was happy with my last week. Don't be foolish. And that's come on, and then you have a day Shawn Hamilton, who comes here and he not only did it against shrine competition or you know, in that type of setting and that those practices, comes here and says, yeah, I can do it. You know, this is me what you saw last week with you know, all time leading catcher and Penn State history. Yeah, I'll just come here and do it again. So where what's your grade on him?
That's all I ever want to know. I gave him a four or five coming into the week, but he's creeping towards the top one hundred status. Yeah he I think you have to because again you're right, Dane, and he's the one kid I found, like it from the north side that's consistently found ways to get open. I mean he runs routes and he's open and these were these quarterbacks sometimes get him the ball and sometimes they
make him work for the ball. But I think he's I think he's the closer again I wrote this down today. The closer he gets the sidelines, the more he's shown the ability to work in that tight space. Yeah, the feet in his natural hands, hands are just really really natural. So anyway, okay, when we were more and then we got to hit a break, this is just a good one to wrap it up with. Bobby like Bobby Bobby Belt. Yeah. Uh,
friend of the show, the show. Feel like y'all are gonna I know, based on what we've talked about today, we're gonna know this guy. But he who's I'll get the question exactly right the most which player in attendance looks the most ready to step in and be a formidable NFL starter? Formidable day one? Where's your Donald? Where's your Martin? Is there one here? It's got to be one of the guards that we talked about. I would have guessed Hernandez based on the way y'all are. I'm
on the back all night. Yeah, I mean there's probably four or five. Any of the defensive tackles. I mean, do you like enough of hand? Would you see a good week? He's helped himself. Do you feel like that you could play one of those hand from Alabama? Yeah? I'm sorry, folks, I do that a lot. But like I mean again, formidable Day one starter, You're ready to put that on him. I'll tell you what though, I see yeah, see yeah, all right, how about has any
and come in and surprised you? And now you think they can come in and be a starter where you didn't think that coming in is anyone? What was? But the wide receivers we talked about, you talked about what you do. Do you think Hamilton could be a starter? Well? No, how about Washington? Do you think he could be a starter. I'm just asking, Yeah, I mean I thought, I mean, if you if you're telling me who's better than Terence Williams, it's gonna sell. Mean, Terrence is a day one starter
for that. I'll give you a name. Nathan Shephard uh from Fort Hayes, who I talked about yesterday broke his hand today, he did, unfortunately, but through through two practices. Yeah, I would argue he's been the best defensive lineman here in terms of his that's impressed. Again. I'm from Mars and I came down to Earth two days ago. I don't know anything about these players, and I just saw this kid from Fort Hayes State and he's played like the best defensive lineman here. So I think he's Yes,
he's out. Hopefully he can perform at that's taking all the quarterbacks out of it, right, No, I mean yeah, no, I'm saying defensive line. Yeah no, no, but Nike's coming in, Starr, shoot your shot, Shoot you if you think one of the guards. Yeah, okay, see Dan Dane's not messing around. You're kind of trying to dance and a bunch of stuff. Oh I'm not doing that. Baker Mayfield's a formidable Day one starter, saying somebody I used to go if if they's your chest, yeah, you have to go play, Josh,
how so if you have to. I'm just looking at these guys though, I'm just trying to think. I think it's one of the guards. I really do. I'm looking at I'm looking at it. I'm thinking, Okay, well, who could come in here and be that guy that you don't have to worry about. You plug him in and play in a way. He goes and I'm going down through the list of guys, and he seems like the guy that's the most likely to do that. There you go. See.
Well Hernandez, absolutely well, Hernandez, how about that. We'll take a break right now, coming back, we'll get into some more things. All senior bulls stay too. Flight to Dallas. The flight to Dallas, A couple updates from injuries that we had earlier. Dallas Garter with a hammy. I wanted to love you and then I just barely saw you. I talked to his agent today and uh, he said, it's not serious. He should be fine for the combine in South Dacas.
Probably the top tight end in this draft. I think it was a good chance he is. What about the kid from Oklahoma, Yeah, Mark Andrews, who is a terrific player. It's just it's hard because he didn't play tight end at Oklahoma. No, he was a thlought receiver. He was, he didn't line up in line and he was detached in the slot, and so he faces a big, you know challenge of someone drafts him to be an in
line tight end. Um. You know, we feel good about the athlete in the in the past catcher, but Dallas god Or at least we've seen put his hand on the ground and he's just a fascinating guy. I thought he won the way Ends came in at two hundred sixty pounds. I didn't expect that. I thought two forty five to two fifty. Uh, he was six four and a half. So I think he can really separate himself as a top guy. Would you think of uh speaking to these tight ends? He and Thomas I took the
word right on my mouth. I have no thoughts on Ian Thomas I stage. This was my first line in my notes today to be up on Dallas Cowboys dot com or it should be up right now on Dallas Cowboys dot com. I can see you guys just sitting in the press box just kind of like ling to each other, you know. Stephen Thomas sits between us, Yeah,
and he'll come up with some stuff. He'll come up with a guy or two to watch and then but like he went down, he moses it around on the field today, and so there was a chair between Dane and I. Actually Nick Saban sat in front of us to story and Ozzie got together. But it's funny when something happens on the field. I could feel him looking in my direction and I do the same when something happen,
and we're kind of looking at the same thing. Ian Thomas today the tight end from Indiana, though there was a crazy I said. First line on my notes today is this is a this is a growing U, I said, Ian Thomas. Tight in Indiana is growing on me as a prospect. And I says college coach is using more as an ah than a true in line guy. But the Texans coaches are doing the same thing with him, which is playing to his strength. So you see Dane used the term a loose player, loose meaning not tight.
When you watch him run routes, body control, he's loose in the he plays. He doesn't he doesn't labor. He doesn't labor at all. And you know what they did, though, David. They used him, like I said, as an h and they kept him in to block in passing situation. So he's blocking on defensive ends. It's like he's rushing. Guys are rushing and they're keeping him in. They don't do it a lot, but like the Cowboys have done that, Nah, James,
Hannah and Witten. So all of a sudden, if you're a Cowboy fan and you're thinking, okay, and the Cowboys want to keep using tight ends in twelve personnel thirteen personnel where they keep him in the bloody but this guy could get down the field they catch the ball. I love that you're bringing this up, because as soon as Dane said what he said about Mark Andrews, I'm just like, next, I don't know, I don't need I don't need a guy that's never done the blocking aspect
of tight end. Not because I mean not because I don't like it, but I just know how it's gonna go with with these guys. Uh so, just keep keep that away from me and give me the game. Ian Thompson and he but you know, I noticed he didn't, did he He didn't have his knee brace on, Like during the season he wore a knee brace like a big, big black and I didn't see it. So hopefully maybe if there's any kind of problems, maybe it's behind him.
But again, I just think, you know, here's a guy that's blocking defensive ends and not getting ragged all, not getting thrown around. I mean, he's in position and he could catch the ball. He's got some it's got some some Hannah to him. I mean, Hanna is a surprisingly you know, people forget that he's got a pretty good pair of hands and can you know, have to touchdown against the Rams. He can he can do stuff downfield.
I just don't ask it of him. Let me turn this on you, now, okay, Mike Gasecki or you and Thomas. I'm taking Ian Thomas. I like, I feel like there's Gasecki had a good day today about here's an anti gatch every time he caught a past you know, the pinch state. Because there's some guys playing in the Senior Bowl. They're actually doing pretty well. It's almost like they've enjoyed back to back ten eleven win season. But he I'll tell you what though, he is uh, he's not gonna block,
but he will catch the ball down the field. And he did that today. And you know what, again, Landi Watts, the safety from Texas A and M had no chance against him today. The sometime player, as Dame Bruger likes to call him, sometimes can cover. Sometimes he did. I was disappointed by the way and that I was hopefully he would come in here and and and put that that tag to to rest, you know, But you're right. I mean sometimes you're like, Okay, who was onto me coverage? Oh?
It was Watts And it happened like twice today and I'm like, and I was so mad. I was. I got mad by the way. The best safety here is from Penn State is Allen Yeah. So yeah, I see. And I've said that they should have been the playoffs. I mean maybe the hear before that. Yeah, I said that. I think I've said that a few times at this point, which is, you know, I think of safety as a as a question for the Cowboys to answer, and I'm not in love with theirs in this draft to this point.
Maybe maybe I'm missing something. Did anybody ask a Byron Jones question today? Among your group? I think we actually we talked. No, well, yeah, we mentioned that we talked about it yesterday. No, we didn't get much more into it. Yeah, so you know, and like I said, I think we
covered this last night. But it's funny to me, it's almost February, and because the Cowboys have turned over so much of their staff, they haven't sat down and had those meetings yet where they're like they're trying to learn the team right now, this is what this guy, this is what this guy sucks at. Yeah, that's gonna happen when they get back from here, you know, between now and the combine. And Stephen Jones said, uh, yesterday, he's basically like, you know, we're gonna listen a little bit.
I'm not ready to say anything, but he said something along the lines of, you know, I'm not convinced we put Byron in the best position to succeed last year. You know, maybe we weren't using them the right way. He wasn't ready to say what the right way is, but yeah, No, I mean it is Chris Richard gonna come in and say you're you're bringing in You're bringing in eight new coaches, and they're gonna have some ideas about the way they like to play football with this personnel.
I'm sure a guy like him can sit down and look at the tape and be like, why why are you playing him a safety? Why aren't you doing this? Yeah? Which having said that, I think the flip side of that coin is it's really easy to see Chris Richard coming in, Uh Richard or Richard Richard. I gotta I think it might be Richard. I don't know, we gotta figure that out. Um, come in and you know the way they like to play their corners in Seattle, and you look at Byron and say, well, yeah, he's gonna
move in the corner. We'll see. I don't know. I'm not ready to just assume they're going to do that, but I think, you know, I think, yeah, there's gonna be there's gonna be things that change. I mean, they moved Lyle from guard to tackle last year after saying for two years they wouldn't do it. So Tyler Conklin, another guy went off that way Yeah, we went off. I was gonna say, I'm keeping with the tight Ends. I was gonna mention Conklinty crassion he related to Jack.
I you know what, that's a good question both from Michigan. Yeah, tell you what if he's related to Jack. Didn't bring him on because he's a good player. Job today him and Jordan Aikins from UCF and that one nice one. He was a player they added. Did they added they added another questern Kentucky player. Yeah. He didn't do too bad, just getting thrown in the mix, right, He did a nice job. So yeah, the tight Ends they were hurting because we mentioned God it was down and so was
Adam Brennan, the UMass tight Ends. Yeah, we were sitting next to a certain club that was kind of when Brennaman went down. They were kind of when they heard that, they all kind of went a damn. We'll get to them on the draft. Uh. I think we had to touch on the quarterbacks real quick. Yeah, I would like, yeah, did you have any observations today that cut your eye? But the quarterbacks, I thought they threw the ball better overall. Yeah I did, and I and and it includes even
though that uh, our Guy Allen, Josh Allen. Josh Allen was throwing into a net and missed the net completely one time. He did, you know, footwork looked good and then the ball left his hand and it went over the top of the net. Was moving all over the place. Oh no, standing still, that was standing still. I'll say that. I thought about Dane though, because I was down in the stands working on something with the Joneses, and I had time to stop and watch some reps and great,
you know it's not it wasn't eleven on eleven. It was just one v ones. But he threw this rope to uh down the corner of the end zone. It was to um gallop, gall gallop. Yeah, and there's the best throw he's hand here literally And it wasn't just me, like everybody just kind of went like whoa, whoa yeah, And I mean I get it. Galloped had a nice job track and it was that right inside the pot, right inside, was right inside against and I mean it went it went right over his shoulder and just it
was exactly where it needed to be. It came out of his hand quick, it arked just there. I mean, it was perfect. It was a perfect route. Too by gallop because he was able to get outside leverage the corner and then worked to the the corner pylon. So yeah, I was a perfect route. But then you watch then you watched like five more reps and like he didn't have he didn't do anything awful, but they didn't look like that. You're just like, well, they were working down
in the red zone. I know the South team was in the red zone. Did because North didn't do any red zone stuff. Yeah, so that the Texans. The Texans did red zone stuff, and it looked like the quarterbacks did a better job of Mike White from what Kentucky. Yeah, and that and that in that tight fueled area. Though I hate to say this because he's from my hometown and he went to my high school. Not super impressed with Tanner Lee. Had a bad interception, had a bad day.
I liked what I saw goyesterday from him today not so much. I thought I took a step back a little lost. I agree that the kind of the theme today with quarterbacks was progress. Yeah, but Tanner Lee kind of went into other drags. Nick de Luca made him the linebacker pick. Yeah, Nick de Luca was just dropping in a zone. Yeah. And with Tanner Lee, you see it, the size, the arm. I mean, he there are the traits that you like, but you know, just not enough consistency.
And with Alan, yeah, just up and down and hopefully we'll see more progress tomorrow. But he's so fascinating because when it when it looks good, it looks amazing, prettiest convey But I wish I wish missed then. I wish we could just get everybody to agree, like we all we all agree that he's intriguing, Like, let's all just agree to not draft him before like pick yeahwey, yeah, I feel that that should be fair and then do whatever you want. Yeah, but like I can't justify drafting
that guy in the top five. But I just feel like, you know what, it's it's gonna happen, happen. I trust me. I've been in those rooms and the argument is gonna start and they're gonna and it's a hard I think it's a hard position to evaluates people fell to twenty Yeah, and I missed him like a like wow, struck out four times. I'm the worst quarterback evalue there is. Maybe I don't on record and say that, hey, you don't. Actually you're not the guy actually drafting him, though I glad.
I'm not saying i'd be fire radio John Elway draft. That's what I'm saying. I don't. I don't quite get it, and everybody that I like you should like this is really that's an interesting point that I mean, I guess I knew it was there, but I hadn't thought about it. But the Broncos pick what five? Oh yeah, that's why they got all those quarterbacks on their there's four picks they pick four? Don't four? Is um? Damn n? Okay,
that's right, Browns four, that's five? Right, I'm sorry, you're right. Day, I'll be intrigued because they're gonna spend a week with this cat. Right. Oh. No, same thing with Baker. If they don't want to draft him at five, then that should be a warning to everybody else, like, yeah, maybe let him fall a little way or that to John Elway. Can't evaluate quarterbacks. There's that too. I mean, there's no such thing as a No one's got a perfect batting order.
When evaluating quarterbacks batting record, there's average is the word, y'all. Yeah, we go mine? Mine is I am out of the LEA. Sorry, I can't. I watched those quarterbacks and it's almost like a prayer, please let me see something that's that's just like, let me see that ball. You know, that's the league though, Like that's just the NFL are hoping because it's the position that determines the success of your franchise. Yeah, and anybody. I mean, you know, we have this conversation until we're
blue in the face. If the Cowboys had known Dak would be good, they wouldn't have taken him after Charles Tapper. And you know, it's just it's a crapshoot. So don't beat yourself up. No, I just I'm you know, when we talk about cowboy, that's the last position that we study with myself and Jeff Jeff Kavanaugh KT and I fortunately, yeah, I mean the last one. I know, well, i know it's important in the grand scheme of football, but I'm
not really worried about it. From a Cowboys perspectives. Looked like they threw the ball better today, didn't and you you would hope, so you know, with the even against air right, getting to know these receivers, uh, just getting a better feel for the coaching and now, okay, in the Thursday, I want to see more progress, especially from Josh Allen. Uh, because again on tape he's uh, some of these throws look amazing, but too many times and it's I think it's just his rhythm from start to finish.
His rhythm is off. We had his body the way it comes out of his hand, and you said yesterday, I'm not sure he knows where it's going right, and I think it's because of a rhythm issue with his mechanics in the pocket. So now I'm with you if I'm you know, the Browns or the Jets or one of these teams and the Broncos picking in the top ten and I need a quarterback. I need to see progress in day three from Josh Allen for me to consider it. Tomorrow. You you want to see progress from
especially tomorrow. You're off Jones duty. I think, I yes, so's tomorrow. What what do you excited to beep? What do you want to see? I mean, I'll be I want to watch these receivers more. I've got a good look at him, but again, you know, improvement through the week. Take a closer look at Hamilton Gallup, Washington, who I just I feel like I'm just naturally down on him.
Maybe I shouldn't be get a closer look at him, closer look at Davenport, just kind of try to settle how I feel about him, And then, you know, I keep thinking about how good I thought Kareem Hunt was last year, which you know, maybe that won't happen again. But I would love to find a Day three running back for the Cowboys to draft. So that's okay, we don't have time to talk about it. But what do y'all think about the Arizona State kit Balash? Yeah, kalin Um,
he's thinking a lot of opportunities to Arizona State. It's a big dude, No he is. He looks like a linebacker. Yeah. I think he's a better pass catcher than runner. I don't know, I'm not. I'm just not as for as big as he is, he's not as I think he'll I think he'll test well, but you just don't see it on the field. I don't see it. You don't see on the football field. So I'm not a big fan of his. I've round four to seven. Need to find me a running back, that's what I want. I
need to keep finding linebackers. Guys. Well, I'm gonna keep looking at every single linebacker that's out there playing tomorrow. I'm trying to figure one out. All right, Well, it sounds like though tomorrow night. Though we talked about possibly a Thursday show. We've got a lot of sound like flights and stuff like that. Yeah, maybe we'll have to say so kind of stay tuned the draft show. If if I could put something together, I might be and
I'm here to Friday. I might do something, maybe a periscope, one man show. Probably do a one man show show, one man show. Maybe we'll call Nate Newton if he's still here, Nate Doute and I'll go through some stuff, but maybe do a little periscope thirty minutes, kind of tie things up so you guys can get out of
here and we can get the equipment loaded. So all right, for my scout and buddies, For David Hellman, for Dane Brugler, for ken't Garrison executive producer, thank everybody once again for being with us, and we will talk to you from the Senior Bowl tomorrow.
