Episode Summary

Welcome to the very first episode of the Dr. Kumar Discovery Podcast.

I’m Dr. Ravi Kumar—board-certified neurosurgeon, father of four, and someone who’s come to believe that real health lives far beyond prescriptions, numbers, and rigid dogma.

This show is for anyone who’s tired of being told “this is right” and “that is wrong” when it comes to their health—and is ready to explore the nuance, complexity, and truth that exists in between.

In this introduction, I share my story—how I pushed myself to the edge, then stepped away from everything I thought I knew. My family and I left our old life behind, moved to India, and discovered a new path to healing. Now, I’m bringing that journey back to you.

What You’ll Learn

✅ Why the most dangerous thing in medicine might be certainty

✅ How personal health often requires unlearning what we’ve been taught

✅ The importance of context, balance, and individual variation

Dr Ravi Kumar

I pushed myself through long hours, little sleep, and poor nutrition, thinking I was invincible. My wife and I sold almost everything we owned, moved with our four kids and dog to India. But I now know that healing and health extend beyond surgery, pills, and lab values. How much of the information we've been told is influenced by pharmaceutical companies and economic interests? My name is Doctor.

Ravi Kumar. I'm a neurosurgeon in search of the causes of human illness and the solutions that help us heal and thrive. I want you to join me on a journey of discovery as I turn over every stone in search of the roots of disease and the mysteries of our resilience. The human body is a mysterious and miraculous machine with an amazing ability to self heal. Let us question everything and discover our true potentials.

Welcome to the Doctor. Kumar discovery. My name is Doctor. Ravi Kumar. I'm a board certified neurosurgeon with a deep interest in exploring medicine and personal health through an open and curious lens.

While traditional medicine has given me extensive training and tools, I've realized, both professionally and personally, that it often overlooks essential truths about what it really means to thrive. So I've started this podcast as a place to question everything and search for honest answers. In today's world, you can hear a hundred voices telling you what to eat, how to live, what to believe, each claiming to have the truth. It can feel dogmatic, binary. This is right.

That is wrong. This food heals. That food kills. But the truth, honestly, it's almost never clear. I've come to see that the most dangerous thing isn't misinformation, it's certainty. When someone speaks in absolutes, I pause. Because nothing in life is absolute. Not diet, not cholesterol levels, or any other aspect of health and wellness. There's nuance, context, individual variation, and I believe there's a kind of moderate wisdom that helps guide us forward. And that's what I'm after.

So let me tell you about myself. I earned my MD and completed seven years of neurosurgical residency. I'm married with four kids and I worked hard to build my career. But it came at a cost. I pushed myself through long hours, little sleep, and poor nutrition, thinking I was invincible.

And I was, until I wasn't. Eventually, my health started to unravel. And that's when I began to question, what do I actually need to do to feel well again? To not just survive, but thrive? The answers weren't easy to find.

I tried extremes like the vegan diet, the carnivore diet, supplements for everything. Eventually I just burned out. And then, I began finding my way back, slowly, through something that looked a lot like balance. The turning point for me was when I finally stepped away completely from what I thought needed to be done. My wife and I sold almost everything we owned and moved with our four kids and dog to India.

I closed my practice and donated my services in charity hospitals. I allowed myself to explore new ways of thinking and living. A year later, I came back with a resolution. I would not fall back into the same ruts again. I'm still a neurosurgeon, it's part of who I am, but I now know that healing and health extend beyond surgery, pills, and lab values.

I want to understand this broader picture and I want to share it with you. So what should you expect? The podcast will begin with foundational topics around health. I'll cover subjects that affect all of us, often using research and perspectives that aren't commonly discussed in your doctor's office. For example, early episodes will dive into lipids and cardiovascular health, asking questions like: Do we really need to lower cholesterol to a specific number?

What actually causes heart attacks and strokes? How much of the information we've been told is influenced by pharmaceutical companies and economic interests? I've reviewed the literature, and I can tell you there's more complexity here than most people realize. But the truth is out there. In research, in tradition, in common sense, that's what I'll explore.

We'll look at the data and also look at human history. We'll examine the studies and the lived experiences of people who thrived without modern medicine. And from that, we'll draw conclusions. Not necessarily prescriptive ones, but thoughtful ones. Conclusions you can use to make your own decisions.

Conclusions I'll use to make my own decisions. And this podcast will grow. And it will also likely evolve. I'll conduct interviews, explore creative or unconventional topics. Wherever the search for honest understanding takes us, I'm open to it. I'm open to it all. So think of this as episode zero. An introduction. An invitation to you. I want you to join me on a journey of discovery.

Let's cut through the noise, the dogma, the bias, and try to figure out what actually works. What helps us live better, healthier, more inspired. So if you're interested in joining me, please click the link in the show notes and sign up to be notified every time a podcast is released. And if you know someone who you think could be helped by this, please share this podcast with them. My name is Doctor. Ravi Kumar, and I'm excited for what's ahead. Cheers.
