Transcript

You're listening to the downbeat on ninety seven one, The Freak, the Return of the food Court. Nine o'clock Food News. We're going to try food from a brand new spot, so we have a review. The sweetest delivery driver of all time? Yes, scooping it up for us, so good looking. This place doesn't even take online ordering yet. You can't get it on door dash or Uber eats or whatever your favorite hub favor. I don't even know if I don't know if that you walk in and get it or

if it's only drive through. I have spoiler drive through and walk in, but you cannot dine in. Fascinating, fascinating, Yeah, that's fantastic. Nine thirty five. We'll get into a little bit of the weird Cowboys stuff that's going on before we get to your talkbacks, because there has been dacks to in the news. Again, We're not gonna beat you over the head of that contract talk, but it's a little interesting, Jerry's comments a little

interesting. And does any of that relate to the sexual assault allegations? Man, I don't know. If you want to read into stuff, you can, Plus the return of a Cowboys legend and Zeke maybe you're talking about it, maybe so as maybe not. Cowboys are now the redheaded stepchild of our four local teams because everyone else seems to be thriving again that nine thirty five. Right now, we have no intro for this. I think we're gonna we're gonna shoot the s. You want any do one live with his acoustic

He loves it. Oh my god, it's probably out of tune. That'd be great. Has it ever been in tune? Is the real question. Even when I use them a little app to get it in tune and you hit that first chord, it's like, no, f no, it should be an E. It's an app and somebody doesn't play guitar, It doesn't know anything. Let me just speak for all of us. It's just kind of annoying when you guys have to spend all this time getting the guitar in tune before you start, and frankly, I would I'd rather not do it.

Okay, the roy industries always the always tuned guitar. I think they do that something like that where they have the little tuners that are mechanized and they always stay perfect, like the little knobs at the top, the neck knobs. How about we tighten them even tighter so then over time the little string doesn't get loose or whatever causes you need to screw around tuning it all day instead of playing music, which is what we want, because you don't

think about these things. You need me too, because you guys are just like, oh, what's the food? What's the food near me? It's very surface level. Your existence is mine is complex. Kevin hit the open, Danny sing it for him. No, no, he's got this. This is a Kevin production. Now, no, this is Kevin. It's a comedy, not a drama. D that we're gonna talk, go about it. It's comedy. A little while. Believe I've got gout. Okay, I don't have a get your guitar was out of tune? Dude,

the hell I think your life is out tune? Kevin. We watch Stepbrothers last night at Alibu Draft House Cinema for the Let's Freaking Hill Movie series. In fact, we will go ahead and sponsor this segment instead of the nine o'clock segment today, we're gonna give them eight am power hour time right here sear for Alimal Draft House Cinema. Five weeks. You can't beat it with

a stick. They're doing cool things now because it's twenty twenty four where they are showing throughout the year of movies from the last thirty years, but in increments of the five years. So if you want to see a move from seventy four to seventy nine, eighty four, eighty nine, gota keep going ninety four ninety nine four like the I was looking through some of the poster that they had some of the movies that they were showing from those years,

and you can scan and get your times. You know, when you're go very cool. Alma Draft House is awesome. That's where you should watch your movies. And Mike's offer still stands. If you ever see him in a theater that's not Alamo Draft House, you have permission to knock him right in the penis. Punch me in the penis, no words. If you want to even talk afterward, If you're like, hey, I like your show, or you want to chat after you want to talk golf, that's fine.

Well you're but doubled over like Luca and the Pain after getting in se in a non album. You punched me in the penis. Thank you. If you don't want to say a word. Yeah, thank you, thanks for listening. Oh god, hey, all show is kind of funny, okay, or if you don't say anything that's fair, I'll never got the email for them. Them fleet tickets one one digs okay, don't more Creed tickets later in the week. We haven't given any away yet, so I

said, there's all of them. So Stepbrothers was our movie of choice now last the first time we did. We did Acventure a Pet Detective to kick off football season because they were a good, good movie. But did Office Christmas Party in December because of Christmas, yes, you know, and Been and Skin and the Downbeat to have their movie of the month. I think Ben and Skin they've been table talking on the air. Mcgruber. Uh. They did great choice Bottle Rocket last time, which is so yeah. I

think the mcgroober is what they want. We'll see if they have it. I think Speakeasy to Demolition Man last time. So we were like, let's

just go. We were table talk to five to ten movies, but we all landed on like, let's just go right here, and it might sound a little mainstream and right down the middle of a lie, let's go Step Brothers and we did it, and we kind of I know, for me, I had abstained from watching it, flipping through catch it a few times on Comedy Central, or yeah, but you don't get all the cussies.

Yeah, we got the full sin Step Brothers. Its eighty percent of it was new to me basically, you know, I knew the main parts. I knew Derek singing and balls on the drum kit, I knew like a handful, but eighty percent of it. I was like, I didn't remember this at all. As funny as hell. We were all sitting by each other, Dude, Danny and I laughed the whole Christina was dying laughing at maybe the most inappropriate line in the entire movie. Yeah, which is that

what the head pops up? Yeah, Derek pops up into the treehouse. What's up? I think that got the biggest laugh of the entire night. Is a very simple, shocking Tom Brenneman movie. Comedy is shocking sometimes say things that are not appropriate. And it was two thousand and eight, you know, it was a different you know, I don't know. I don't know, man, you know what I forgot? Hopefully they are delivery drivers

in the store, just how hot Mary steen Urgeon is. Yeah? Hold, he was she when was filmed, like mid fifties, sixty Yeah, mid fifties, fifties. Maybe they're always younger than I think. She's seventy one now, that came out when wait, I believe so years ago. Yep, that's crazy, which makes sense if Will Ferrell was forty one at the time. Yeah. Do you think any chance a woman that looks like that would just barely know the name of someone looks like Richard Jenkins and just

have immediate passionate sects with them like that in the movie. Okay, it was on a deeper level. Their love was on a deeper level than just they're distracted by her breast because he's given the keynote speech at a big conference. Hearing aid coming and he goes, yes, and can I just bury my face in your breast? I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. What before you were asking the question earlier? Did step brothers hold up? It held up more than better than I expect. Absolutely did. I laughed the entire

hour and a half or whatever. You don't go more than thirty seconds without cracking up. It's just so stupid. I could how much fun must this have been to sit around with your knucklehead buddies and just write jokes for that damn movie. And like Kevin said, they did the outline in what a few days, five days in one of Will Ferrell's guest houses after they were

promised air conditioning for this movie. I mentioned in Night I love movies that have no point like it all culminates at the Catalina wine mixer, right yeah, And it's like we haven't even mentioned they didn'tvention the Calai wine mixer until ten minutes left to go in the movie. Well, they needed to figure

out how to wrap it up right exactly. So they go to the thing and now Dale is in charge of it and it's going well, everything's fine until the all only nineties Billy Joel band continues to get requests from the Stranger and from albums in the seventies, and they get so mad they get in a fight and dragged off stage. And now the in a While mixture is ruined. We're not selling any helicopters. Why because that band is no longer

playing, right, we have a disaster on our hands. And and Dale and run by what led by Horatio saying and he's tried not to fight. No, we're only nineties, Joel, We're early eighties, Joel bro and the guy kept yelling and then it's a disaster. And then Dale and Wally have to get on the drums and sing, and they do, and they play what Time to Say Goodbye? Yes, which is just it's beautiful. It'll make you cry. I think I welled up with tears. I cried

that the damn Oscars when they sang it or whatever that was. It was Oscars right right, But that was Butchlly singing a jale. But Dale, even Dale doing it was great. And then by him singing the song doesn't have the voice of an angel, he touched everyone. And they ended up selling enough helicopters, like a ton of helicopters for Derek to make his nune. And that's the climax, like that's what had to happen to be,

like God, damn it. Because they were so successful at at the Catalina fing wine Mixer and Derek sold a bunch of helicopters and enabled them to start their own karaoke business. Yes, carry rock'n' roll like Rocky Carry Rocky.

Yeah, there's no point to the whole movie. Well, okay, so I've turned my brain off going this actually could be an interesting commentary on bullying, because if you look at Dell and Brennan, a part of how they got to where they were in their forties living at home with their single

parent is a divorce situation or b they're two instance of bullying. Brennan has a man Jina when he's doing the high school class school was chanting it, including his parents he's younger, and then parents, and then for John c Riley, it's just getting picked on by Chris Gardaki and the other kids at the elementary school or the junior high school. It's like, okay, so I'm trying to turn my brain off and go no, no, stop thinking

that there's a deeper meaning to this movie. This is just it's an avant vehicle for silly jokes and it's so great. And the people who at the time were not known though Adam Scott and Catherine Hahn are just perfect almost scene stealers. Well, if John if will Ferre and John c Riley weren't so gd great, yeah, they would be. They would have stolen the movie.

Brilliant, brilliant strategy to bring those characters in when they did, because you kind of get to a point where you've got your two you know, your two stars, which is Riley and Ferrell, and they get up to about maybe a third of the way forty percent through the film, and you feel like, if something didn't change, that was going to run its course. And then they introduced Derek and d Man is involved, and then his

wife is involved, and it just takes it up a notch. And then you get a little burst of a boost of quick energy from Rob Wriggles scene. You know, so you start bringing in these funny people to kind of help help the movie kind of cross the finish line. And then when when then, when you know Ferrell and Riley end up doing something again, it kind of gives it a little more, makes it a little Uh, you kind of missed it a little bit movie. I don't know. It's just

a really well strategized comedy. It's really dumb and not too long. But what an hour and thirty five hour and forty Maybe I had it going into it, and maybe one I had it going into it as my second favorite movie of all time, all right, and I don't no movie or comedy movie. Okay, that's wild. Why that's so wild about it? I only like comedies plus number one private Management, Billy Madison, I have it Benjamin, Billy Madison, but there's there's childhood like Billy Madison Place of Soldier.

Yeah, oh, never saw it. Figure that was number one on all of our I've never seen it, not at all. Oh well, excuse me, I didn't. I'm just laughing at the reference. And Billy Madison is the the movie were when I'm six years old, you're first understanding the joke sixty nine, you know. So it's like that's got a special place in your heart that never goes away. I do think Step Brothers is number two, and I think it stays there, locked in at number two.

It did not drop, and I have more appreciation for it than I ever did after seeing it again in fold, not on cable, in the theater at Alamo Beautiful, I mean, and everyone was like, everyone, that was a great choice that y'all didn't y'all nailed it. And I was like, yes, we did direct the movie the whole Yeah, they were thanking us for the movie. That was weird and you're welcome. The whole theater was laughing the whole time. Yeah, you know, we forgot to

ask in our hilarious pre movie speech. I mean we did a tight ten minute set. Jesus, they were laughing harder at that than anything. Yeah, look at I mean we were hot. The crowd saying Felice Navidad and Danny for his birthday. Yeah, I mean, like two line. Well, that's all anyone knows. That's true. But I wanted you to ask if anyone in that theater was seeing this movie for the first time. I forgot, Yeah I didn't. I saved you that your online and you didn't

use it, so I still wonder that. But yeah, great theater laughed the whole time. Fun night, Yeah, beautiful. And I was discussing this JJ. We're gonna save your movies for probably tomorrow, okay, because we're not gonna have time unless we do have time later in the show, because I do. We're discussing earl, like, what's the greatest comedy ever? Tons of texts coming in, Yeah, phones lighting up, all that

stuff. Probably who's our baseline list from that? This is where we were kind of searching, and the problem kept becoming, well, there's a lot of different lists on this and a lot of times they're trying to reference movies like Tutsie or something from like nineteen fifty nine, something like it. Hot Danny found something on movie Web that is pretty close and I think it's like close enough have to at least use as a as a guy. It represented

all of the great comedies that started at the turn of the century. Okay, the last twenty four years, which may be the best way to go. And you know, we've talked about before how comedy movies have kind of died over the last fifteen years. It's rebably seemed like do you I wass want to fire away at a guess at number one? Here the hangover? No, No, how many? This actually goes to the nineties on number one. Oh, it's a little deeper. You start getting into something about

Mary. Yeah, forty year old virgin I'll take those two. Uh, well, number that's not those were not in the top five, neither one of those. How many do you have forty forty of them on there? And okay? Number one is nineteen ninety three? Well, okay, and it was Bill Murray. Do I remember Groundhog Days? Mean ground hauled? Funny? Funny, funny I think it's kind of good, yeah, or classic than yeah, classic clever, it's more clever. When I think of

comedies, I don't necessarily don't. They don't have to be clever, like there was there anything clever about Yesterday. No, it's about absurdity, it's silly, it's timing, all right. Uh. Tropic thunder Tropic thunder boy, that's a good one. A lot of people are texting that one in mm hm. We should probably consider that one next time because people love that movie. No, don't see traffic thunder on there man, laugh out loud gags per minute. I'd have being a little bit older than you, Mikey,

and a lot older than you, Kevin. I think this type of insane comedy started with Airplane. And I've seen a few of these lists, and airplanes way high up on most of them. That's probably my favorite. If I have to go to this type of film, silly, absurd comedy. Yeah, and then maybe something like Life of Brian. Yeah, History of the World Part one, Holy Grail. You start getting into the Christopher guest vehicles like spinal tap, Yeah, Guffman, hold Girl was six,

Holy was forty on here. Okay, but you know to like School of Rock was eight. Yeah, School of Rock is hilarious. Anchorman was nine on their Bridesmaids. There you go, let's see nineteen. Yeah, ibout the jerk, Yes, the jerk did not make it. Did not make it. Austin Powers number eleven there, Yeah, you know I think of I keep super Bad as one I always go back to. Yeah, that's the Saddles. Yes, the Saddles always gets love on these types of lists.

And then sixteen and then the you know all the Richard Pryor stuff stir crazy is hilarious. Yeah, and you stud the Chevy Chase vehicles like vacation and Caddy Shack and seems like old times with God who was the oh my God, Goldie Hawn and Yan Yang Yan Yang other people romains, No ben Stein, has it been thy all those two thousands, like there's a run Talladegan Night's forty year old version super Bad Knocked Up is three amigos on there.

Three amigos is great, boy. I might not get support, but three amigos I would throw in for the next So it did not make it so silly. It didn't make it. No, what's the one you just said would be good for next time, traffic Thunder, Traffic thunder, Okay, A Lot of Space is twenty four, yes, ver, Shrek is twenty five. Shrek is great. They have Napoleon Dynamite on there. Oh good, Yes, that was a lot of the lists. Now I didn't

see it. You know what movie I still kind of keep coming back to is one I Forgetting Sarah Marshall will always get a lot of love from a lot of people. I really like I Love You Man, the Paul rud Jason Siegeal movie that one, and watched that recently on cable and I was like, Jesus, that's hilarious. Yeah, And the last couple of times I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I kind of went, it's good, but not like I Love You Man movie, laugh way harder, It's all time

and place to you mentioned Napoleon Dynamite. I remember when that came out. I didn't know if it was the funniest movie I've ever seen, but I remember thinking, this is the funniest movie I've seen in a very long time, and the fact that it was so weird and unique and it didn't seem like a cookie cutter comedy it was different. It kind of elevated it. To me. I loved that movie when it was first out. Napoleon Dynamite.

Yeah, great, very unique about Borat three on this list. Borat, I'm mostly reading text, so just I don't want you to think I'm getting credit for this. No, it's all good. Well, we we're out of time now too. That was cool, man said the English patient. Okay, that's a good bit the list. How many Shindler's List requests that we had? Wedding crashers, hot Boy, hot rd no, hot fuzz fun Come on, Well, Danny's going to do a zero risk spot,

guys, but he's also got the Morning News coming up. Next to Morning News, the next thirty minutes are all about me, and we're gonna make it all about you by talking about this in Dingha's Morning News. Because the first human being to receive a neuralink brain implant had it installed. Was it successful? We'll find out next
