You're listening to the downbeat on ninety seven to one, the free fur get more than six thirty five Friday kind of holiday season. Ish, we're almost there home stretch. I'm hearing Christmas music in the hallways. Really yeah, I've noticed it for the first time today and next Thursday. When you're done eating and this starts at the time the clock starts, definitely for everyone when that fork hits the plate on an empty plate, and it's official. Your
meal is done. On Thanksgiving, Thus begins the countdown to Crimbo. It's true that instant. How prepared are you for Crimbo? I'm not prepared for Crimbo at all. Hasn't really crossed my mind. I mean presence or what to do presence and what your family events are. I panic and pay for overnight shipping for stuff, and I'm terrible. I got malcolm Santa list for Christmas. These are the things that he keeps saying that he wants for Crimbo. Okay, colash his own car wash. He wants books, there you
go. He wants monster trucks. Okay, he wants hot wheels. Hell, yes, he wants ornaments and pictures of Santa, pictures of what else? Pictures of Santa. Okay, see, he ran out of stuff that he wanted and then he just kind of labeled. He looked around the room, it's on Christmas thing. He named a couple of things that he ornaments in table. I playing ceiling fan. I want the ceiling fan, plant
and cup. I cried when I saw pictures of Santa, because we take him every year and this will be his I guess it'll be his third third visit to Santa. And we got the pictures. It's the same Santa. The guy, the guy at North Park does he pretend he remembers him. Both pictures, the one when he was so nine months old, sitting on Santa's lap, screaming, crying, when he is almost two, last year, sitting on Santa's lap, screaming, crying. He got him both in
my house and he looks at him and goes, baby sad. I'm like, yeah, baby's real safe, and so I keep kind of prep him. It's like, dude, we're gonna go see Santa this year. You want to sit on Santa's lap. He's like no, but he don't want to, but he wants pictures of But he wants pictures of ornaments and ornaments,
ornaments, like he said, ornaments ornaments. Yeah, yeah, that's that's gonna be My next next month is all of the holiday stuff that you know is involved with a little one because they're seeing all this stuff for the first time. It's all brand new, and you've got to kind of look at it through the eyes of a child, and it's kind of beautiful. It's kind of fun, right, absolutely. Now you have to load up like a lot of presents, like they have to come down and see,
and most of them from Malcolm. Can he read his own name? He knows a lot of the alphabet, Yeah, he can, he can. He knows letters. He knows his name starts with M. Yeah, cute kid, pictures of antique. One moment before the M I P T I w uh. You had a bit of a fiasco upon leaving work yesterday. I went, yeah, yeah, so we you and I stuck around for a little bit and did some things, recorded some audio after work yesterday, and I think we both I don't know, cut out what bright at eleven
right, yeah, standard and you zoomed off in your jeep. You're very reliable jeep. When I got into my two year old Volkswagen that has thirty five thousand miles on it. And I pressed the button and it won't start, and I thought, you know what, I think this thing had a little hiccup this morning when I left the house, because it did. I hit the button and it just kind of goes and it didn't start, and I thought, maybe it's the gas line whatever that was. So I hit
it again. It cranked right up, drove it to work. Well, I come to find out that the battery's dead, and man, but then all this other in those newer cars, all the electrical stuff, you're just I'm thinking, well, maybe it's maybe it's something else, and let me let it set for a minute. It's basically you have a computer on wheels now, and sometimes you just need to reboot your computer. So I took the battery terminal off, put it back on. That didn't seem to help.
So I realize at this point it's dead. And it's either dead because it's a bad battery that's two years old, city driving starting it, you know multiple times a day, a factory battery that's probably not as good as one you would get like a good aftermarket battery. It's just ran. Its course, or I've got an alternator problem where the alternator is not charging the battery, and in my mind's saying, well, if that's the case,
that's not the case. Otherwise, if the alternator was broken, I wouldn't have been able to drive to work, Like all of my electrical stuff would just not even be working because you got a dead cell and a bad alternator. Well, the alternator's creating current to you know, power all of your you know, your radio and your AC and all that stuff. So I'm thinking dead cell. So like, well, I don't know what to do.
And by that time, you were already home, you know, by the time I kind of like if I did immediately call and said, oh, I got a dead battery and called you, you would have been basically at Spring Valley or Alpha and turn right around and jumped me because I yelled at you. I'm like, dude, I have cables. I had park right next to you already. I also didn't think that you had cables. That's fair. Yeah, It's like Mike, you didn't have cankey prepared for
anything. Well, you know, based on the fact that you got lost in the snow and didn't thought you were going to die, I told you that in confidence. You told that on the air yesterday. Anyway, I didn't think that you had cables. So I'm kind of at this point there's nobody in the garage. Everybody else is on the air. Uh, there's really nobody in the office, you know, So everyday who am I? I don't know what to do. So I get I got roadside assistance,
and I clicked the thing and you know, booked the appointment. And they're like, your mechanic is going to arrive between fifty nine and eighty nine minutes. Dude, I would have come back up. You still should have called me. So I kind of am waiting and then I get a text and it says, hey, Carlos is on his way. He'll be there in six minutes. I'm like, kick ass. Fifteen minutes goes by. There's no sign of Carlos. At this point, I've got my hood open.
I'm ready for Carlos. And some guy is driving out leaving work. Dude, probably our age fifty whatever. Nice dude just looks out his window. He's in a big pickup truck and he goes, you just need a jump or is it something worse? And I think it's just a jump and he goes, all right, I go, you got cables? He goes, yep, pulls up the pickup truck. The thing started right up. Turns out this guy works at IBM in the building. I guess there's an IBM office here and I go, I go, so what do you do here
in the building? Goes, oh, I'm just one of the IBM assholes. Like, oh cool, I'm one of the ihard assholes. Not damn glad to meet you. Yeah, damn glad to meet you. Was super cool. He listens, Oh really, because I know who you are, I'll listen. I was like, oh cool man, thank you so much. So got it home, you know, did whatever the afternoon, and I go out to start it again for the evening. Click toast. Yeah, so the battery the cell's just not taking a charge. It's just toast.
So getting that done. No, I just got to lift to AutoZone. And I go to AutoZone and they're like, okay, well, which size is it. I'm like, I don't know. It's the I gave you the model and everything. It's like, yeah, but they come in two different sizes. It's the same twelve volt battery, and I'm like, you know what, give them both to me. I'll take them home and whichever one doesn't work, I'll bring it back with my old battery and get
my core refund, which is like twenty five bucks. Dude, the battery game. You think groceries are expensive, there was a time when you can get a battery for like fifty bucks. The damn battery was two hundred and thirty nine dollars. I would have guessed one nineteen, No, two hundred and thirty one dollars after tax, like two forty something like that. And you know, once you return your old battery, they knocked twenty bucks off
that. But still, the damn battery was two hundred dollars for a battery. And I guess that's just how much things cost now. And I probably sound like old man that recognize inflation, but yeah, I got the thing installed properly, and after having to look at a YouTube video to find out why it wouldn't, I couldn't extract it from the car. Yeah, oh my god, dude, and I sound again old man. New cars FM, you can't work on them. Even replacing a battery a simple one of
the most simplest things in the world to do on a car. Yeah, why wouldn't that be the easiest thing to take out and put in a new one. I mean, they know that's a likely thing that faulty. So I get the terminals off and then it's wrapped in this battery blanket that you've got a wedge off of there, and then there's a clamp that takes a socket extension that needs to be about eight inches long. Thankfully I have all that stuff, and you've got to remove this bolt at the bottom of the
battery. It's very hard to get to. Then you got to pull that bracket out, then the battery comes out, and then you've got to, you know, do the process in reverse putting the new went in. Yeah, it took me. I'm not kidding, Mikey. By the time I picked up the battery, went home, installed the battery, replaced other It's like a ninety minute endeavor, which back in the day you would have done that in the parking lot of auto zone. TEXTA says Danny. The Interstate
Batteries corporate office is about two blocks from where you sit. We could have helped you out. I'll keep that in mind next time. Yeah, yeah, write that number down. So yeah, next time, now that I know that you've got a jumper cable, I'll jump your bones dusty parking lot in America. I got your reputation proceeds. All right? How about the most important thing in the whole wide world? Wake up, your little sleepy head. It's time to get your stupid ass out of bed. About the
most important thing and the most important thing you all right? All right? It is very fluid the most important thing in the world. Sometimes it's something very important. Sometimes it's something important to us. Sometimes it's somewhere in the middle. But I think today, yeah, let's do something important to us, important to you. As last night at midnight, the new Bastards of
Soul album dropped on all platforms and it is now available. And you know these these are brand newbies, so I couldn't no one had access to them until we were asleep. Yeah, and I want to hear a couple Okay, do we need any little reset on what this is? Well, I'm gonna have questions for you just from a music lay because I'm curious and I love that segment you did hell eight months ago about anatomy of a song. You don't have to go that far into it unless you want to, or
if there's one song you really want to decode. But I think thirty second reset on Bastards Okay, Bastards of Soul, a band that I co formed with a really good friend of mine, Chad Stockslager. About seven years ago. We got a singer, this buddy of ours that we've known for a long time named Chadwick Murray, who had never fronted a band before. He was a bass player, and he recommended to us by a good friend said, hey, man, he's a really good soul singer. You should check
him out. So we did, got together. Immediately knew this is the dude, and we started playing together. We've made two full length albums leading up to this one. A couple of years ago, Chadwick got very, very sick. He went into hospital and he did not come out. We lost him September first of twenty twenty one, a very rare lung disease that they did not even know what it was till he had already passed away.
We had a bunch of songs that were finished, We had some that were unfinished, and we wanted to do a release a final release to kind of honor him and put out some material that that you know, we were very
still very proud of this stuff. Wasn't just like scraps that we had no intention of never doing doing anything with this is this is a collection of songs that, albeit not part of a congruent album, you know that you kind of go into the studio and it's like, we have a concept, we have an idea all these songs that need to fit together in this certain way. These were songs that were kind of segmented, fragmented. There's some over
here, some over here. We ended up putting them all together, recorded a couple of new tracks with some guest singers that would have you know, that would have been Chadwick had he lived and we were dropping it. It came out last night on midnight on the digital platforms, and it's available on vinyl and CD Josie Records, and then I'm sure all of the other final
record out record store outlets that are that are around town. I could probably beat you down for a long time with questions, but how how much of the singing on the album is Chadwick versus other people you had to bring in to fill in those gaps everything, Okay, So it's a nine song record. There's one instrumental that we released as a forty five a couple of years
back that you hear every day during the scuttle. But it's a song called Barbecue and Paris that was written by our alto sax player in our horn section. So there's that. And there are two songs that feature guest singers. So that's three out of the nine. So six are Chadwick. Okay, six tunes featured Chadwick because I always wonder that because you always have bands where something happens or many years later in the unreleased track or something like that,
and just the colossal effort of turning that into something releasable. But at any rate. Spinnin was in twenty twenty Corners twenty twenty two, and this is the third and final album has to be I guess the final album of Bastards of Soul, and its dropped just last night. It's called Give It Right Back, and the lead song is one that we did I think an anatomy of a song maybe almost a year ago on this station, and it's my
favorite song on the album, featuring Keith Young on lead vocals. This is a song written by Chadwick Murray. It's a last song that he ever wrote. We unfortunately never had the chance to record it with him on vocals, but we felt this would be the most important song on the record. We put it first. It's the very first track, kind of an unlikely first track for a record you usually want to come out with a bang. We decided to ease into things with a lush, beautiful ballad written by Chadwick Murray
featuring Keith Young on lead vocals. This is called this Love. I won't give it right back to you now girl, this slur, I won't give it right back to you now, baby, this slur. I've got soul many things I won't to share it. Yeah, words having been written to help me say things you do for me every day, Lord, my life, my bid I love you in every way. Getting right back to that pill. This okay, beauty, this love Young Love Love Love k I
E T E K keat Young Yeah, good friend of ours. He sang backup vocals on another song or two off of this record with Chadwick when Chadwick was alive at a session that we did at the studio in Denton. How do you lighting fast? How do you pick? And it may be different because of the Chadwick situation what you just said, But how do you choose the lead single on a new album? This one? I think I don't remember if it was me or Skin that said, Look, let's put this
thing for It's unconventional to lead a record with a song like this. This is something you would typically ease in or come out big with a high energy tune and then you get your ballot. It maybe's track three or four.
We just thought it was kind of a bold choice. Yeah, and we wanted the first song to be heard, which would be the one that Chadwick Murray the singer, had the most co writing or he that he basically wrote this song okay, and that applies to I. I guess first song I meant and also the single to represent the album, right, Yeah, this was the first single that we dropped, maybe a month or so ago.
We just wanted to highlight this specific tune to kind of honor him. And it's honestly, it's the best I think it's the best song on the record. It's definitely the best sounding song on the record. Let's go to another one. This is kind of this was a tune that I had written that was a demo that I'd presented to the band. It was one of those things I was like, yeah, we'll get to that. We'll get to that because it's it was an instrumental, but I had like a call out
kind of chorusy hook that kind of repeats itself. And we got this band, the singing group called the shah La Das, this New York singing kind of a du wop group from New York. They live here now. It's a father and sons trio sometimes quartet, and two of the guys live in Dallas now and they're a member of this band called the shah La Das. Their last name is Shalda, so it's kind of a play on their last
name. And this song is you know, features them on it. And it probably would have been Chadwick at some point if he had lived, and we would have recorded this with with Chadwick. Is this Paul and his dad? This is Paul and his dad. Yeah, Paul and Pop Shalda uh singing the little hook hook line on this song. And this is called try a Little Love right. You get the idea great. It sounds so good
man, and it's funny I hearing it now. I on headphones. You can hear like somebody talking off mic, like calling for something, you know, in the room, because they're pretty much all live other than the orchestra and the and the horns. You know, like like there was a change coming up. I could hear somebody in my left channel just gotta yelling across the room about something. I love noticing stuff like that in the recordings.
It's funny for you to hear that. Never hear it's so weird. That's the first time I've heard that on this on this track probably skin Order and Taco Cassa Green Burrito. Sam all right, Yeah, I wish we could do more, but you know, we're low on time, and maybe we spent a couple of return Cuts's about the remainder of the morning through ten o'clock. Yeah, JJ, Dealer's choice, whatever you want. That's awesome, man, new album, give it right back. He just dropped us nearly
seven hours ago, and we got a big old party tonight. I know. I think it's all sold out now at Alamo Draft House Sedars. We're doing a You're dropping a documentary essentially about the making of this album and the life of Chadwick and Ueah two showing seven and nine. I think there may be some tickets left, just really yeah, go to bastardsmsoul dot com and there's the first thing you see is a link for it. At least give
it a shot. It's gonna be super super cool event, man, and at worst, even if you can't get tickets, comeing Alamo has a badass bar. Oh yeah, come watch sports. There's be a live DJ that they're flying in just for this event. Danny, the whole band, uh and pretty much everybody from the station here is gonna be their party and having a good time. So yeah, come by Cedars Alamo Drafts House this evening and we're having a good time, all right. Coming on next to it
is Sports at seven. Even if you do not care that Formula one racing is happening in Vegas and it's already kind of a s show. It's all happening this weekend, you will still think these next guys are funny. We're going live to London, England next on ninety seven to one. La Freak
