You're listening to the downbeat on ninety seven to one. The food we've been we've been tracking an accident on the North Texas or North Dallas North toll Way between Keller Springs and Frankfurt Road. Apparently this happened at five forty one A, which is almost to the minute when I zip up the tollway and we take our exit. We're in Addison, just north of six thirty five. We have an overturned semi and it still says, according to tech dot,
will be in place for a long period of time. Now again, that was five forty one AM, so I don't know exactly. And I just looked out the window and it looks like it's loosening up a little bit. But I just talked to Jeff skin Wade, who comes south on the tollway, and he said he looked over and saw this semi and said, and you know, I stacked up cars behind. He goes in his head that these cars are never going anywhere ever in ever, so they are recommending you
take one of the exit options. I think Preston Road or Midway is an alternate. But yeah, if you're heading north in the toll way, I guess not real good. Just north of Attison here and we're on top of everything. That's sort of the bit here. Yeah, if you live in DFW, you listen to this crap and you find out what's going on. That is our whole deal. It's Kevin Turner, Danny Baylist, Mike's Roy, we have JJ Jackson here. This is the Downbeat six to ten am
each and every morning. We'll have some of your talkbacks. You can leave them be the iHeartRadio app at nine point thirty in the hot mop and Mike a chance to win a pair of tickets to see comedian Burt Kreischer. Burt Kreischer, you can see a man with a shirt off. I will play you forty seconds of audio from this weekend's golf broadcast, and all you have to do is answer the question what is Smiley Kaufman's crutch for? Yeah, he's down there on a in a chair on a par three. He's sitting
there Green Sade reporting. And if you can answer the question what is Smiley Kaufman's crutch phrase, you want a pair of tickets to see Bert Kreischer on May sixteenth at Windstar. All right, we're giving you that we're giving you that in nine point thirty. You're ready for this. Let's see waving man. I got a speaker installed. It's a robot that I don't I wouldn't
say owned, but I bought him years ago. I think he was constructed in two thousand and three for some version of him, but it's Sports bought FM because he loved the Beastie Boys. He's not sitting down and putting headphones on, Kevin. He's just gonna stand on the corner and he's kind of putting them on there. An he prints important stories that we need to cover, he's fumbling them. Okay, he can't hear JJ's drops unless he wears
headphones. Okay, I'm glad he turned down his his boombox rolling in here listening to Beasties eternally help talk to us off the air, Sports, but get by the microphone. Good morning Downbeat and good morning Dallas fort Worth. Let's get crazy, make some noise, get horny. Now. It's so good to be back in studio with my friends, Big Mike, Danny Bayliss and Kevio Hi JJ. I thought Kevin had a good point about June two, four point eight dumplings should have been the rating to leave room for the
perfect movie. Let's talk sports, d FW. Pardon me while I suck the air out of the room. But legendary e sp and reporter Chris Mortenson passed away this weekend at the age of seventy two. What's your favorite more Report? What? What? What's your favorite mort Report? That is your favorite mort Report? You just never thought about that. Well, I will say, in a pre internet or Twitter land, we did rely on the Mort Report. It was like once a week. Yeah, you'd get the
big dump of what was really going on. It was from people like Mort out there grinding busting their a's Sunday mornings at like nine am, they have something like he's gonna play or he's not. God, that was amazing. Yeah, you know it's even better. I don't know it was Mort but like Sunday morning, you turn on the pregame and you find out what the weather is in the area that you're kind of play. You know, like, oh great, it's snowing in Buffalo again, go dolphins? Is we
didn't know because you had no clue. We didn't take that far ahead, didn't Why would you, I wouldn't look at the weather in northwest New York. We used to live life. Now life lives us through technology. Life lives us. What's funny, He asked, what our favorite mort report was? Yeah, I mean I'd have to think about it, but yeah, I think your favorite Moart report, Danny, I mean the one that comes
to mind, just top of mind to me. It's the obvious choice, is It had to be in nineteen ninety nine when the Patriots traded Cedric Shaw to Cleveland, because if you guys remember he was a surprise third round pick of the Pats a couple of years before ninety seven, he was a projected first rounder. A lot of people thought he was the second best running back in the draft behind Wark done so in ninety eight after the Pats lost Curtis
Martin. Remember when he went through free agency to the Jets. They made him his starting running back, but he was a total disappointed, total disappointment. They ended up relegating him to a backup slot. So when the Moret report came out in ninety nine that freaking Cedric Shaw was going to Cleveland, I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe that Cleveland gave up what they gave up to get him, because he only played like two games and had three
carries for two yards before they released him. Shocking. That's the Mort report. That's your favorite market. I mean, I mean what else would there be? Yeah, you never forget where you were. Yeah, yeah, I remember the Mart reported in nineteen sixty six in the dolphins inaugural season when they were the NFL and AFL were both drafting from the same pool of players, and the Dolphins with their an inaugural draft pick to took Illinois quarterback Jim
Grabowski. And I was sitting there and moret came on and then the Packers also drafted him, and he actually went to the Packers, so they didn't even get him. But I remember Mort Young Young more eighty brought that maybe twelve years old. Yeah, and I was just a little boy in nineteen sixty six. Yeah, you were. You were a probably a sperm in nineteen sixty seven. You really know what reporting was. You know? Interesting
you see it and you never forget. It's wat's the more selec. Yeah, it is like that report was so perfect that as a sperm you remember it now, Yes, like it's in your DNA part of me. Rest in peace. I may have inspired that spirm to, oh wow, be number one and make it that information. I'll be quick here in mine. We all remember nine to eleven two thousand and one like a big you know, moment in history, right, and that's all going down and then the
NFL's got to cancel. But I'll never forget. After many touching tributes, more cut in for a Mort Report live on ESPN to announce that the forty nine Ers had signed defensive back Al Blades, and I'll just never forget nine to twelve two thousand and one. As my favorite Mort report of all time is he comes in and al Blades go to the Niners. You didn't know. You're still confused because of what had happened, and it was good to
know that we could get back to normalcy and sign some free agents. Yeah, within twenty four hours with the announcement of the al Blades move one of the famous Blades brothers the University of Miami. Just my favorite report. I like Mort. Mort provided a lot of great info over the years, and rest in power, Young King. He was seventy two throat cancer fourth throat cancer in twenty fifteen. Did it for a while. I knew he had it for a while, and he kept coming back and doing his thing,
so bombed. Yeah, let's see the reminder of the show for mort you know, yeah, all right, it's a tribute. Wow, that's pretty good information. I must say. It smells wonderful in here. Are you guys wearing cologne? Is that enforcement? I went on a date over the weekend and splashed on some enforcement, and by the end of the night she asked me to bend her over a barrel and show her the fifty States. Let's stop jacking around and get to something more important. Golf, the great
gamechas past time. I an id printer. Local legend Anthony Kim made his return this week on the LIFTOF and his results were not the best. For more on that, let's turn it over to The Dallas Observer twenty twenty three radio host of the Year, Big Mike Mikey h Big Mike Mikey Yoh, it's Big Mike Mikey here Kim. That was kind of a hot fart. Not that we expected a whole lot more out of Anthony Kim making his return after twelve years, but you know, it was a it was a big
story. I am happy that before his first round I kind of said that that would be the last day that we kind of have optimism for Anthony Kim. And this is definitely just a money grab. I mean, who knows. You know, he ran out there and played some golf. He finished essentially dead last. He shot seventy six in round one. He shot uh it was he shot six over in round one, seventy six, six over in round to seventy six, and a four over in round three for a
total of sixteen over par. Okay, so he broke eighty every day. That ain't bad. Yeah, but he's on a professional tour better than you can do. Yeah, that's true. He was eleven strokes. He finished fifty third. He wasn't competing with anyone out of fifty four kind of but he only beat a guy who didn't finish. He finished dead last. He was sixteen over eleven strokes, worse than than Hudson Swaffer who finished at five over par. And he made how much money? Yes, we don't really
know. Yeah, they never really said, but leave, but throughout the remainder of the LIFT season he'll make more than the ten million, way more, probably yeah, and how much of this did you watch? Uh? Not that much. I did watch a bit yesterday and it was weird because they keep cut. You know, they're showing like uh, Joaque Neeman and you know Ram and the guys near the top of the leaderboard, and then
they said, oh, over to Anthony Kim. They're kind of like, oh, we can't believe how good a short game is, you know, like you know, knowing that we didn't expect too much. And they showed him on one they're like, here he is for another birdie, of which he made like three on the week, and he had maybe a twenty five foot birdie putt and he left it ten feet short. It was bad, and I'm like, oh, not that one. He's left that one short.
I don't know. They're like trying to treat him nice, and you know, it's not like you expected him to contend in this first event, but it's just see over is shocking, shocking, and it feels like a big old grab a cash for him to say, fine, I'll drag it out there and embarrass myself for X amount of dollars, which feels like what he did and what he'll continue to do and they're in Hong Kong for their next event, and I don't expect anything better than dead last. But again
he lost by thirty three strokes. What's unique? Three back? You know, what's unique about Live compared to PGA is just the lack of history and also probably lack of rights availability to footage of the golfers that are currently on their roster from their previous lives. Because when you watch a tournament and you'll have this in obviously the Big four, but just oh, let's we'll go back to nineteen nineteen eighty nine when Jack you know, eagled this this hole,
this legendary hole on this random course or whatever. Live just they don't have any history, yeah, and they don't have any access to those moments. It's all kind of new and figuring it out and everybody's just winging it over it Live. Yeah. I mean, I think it's much like the XFL, where there will be some things where the pro golf has to consider and like, all right, that's not a bad idea, and there is something too just full throttle. There's a lot of golf that you watch.
I mean, I like the shotguns start to be honest, there's some interesting things to consider. I get frustrated when I'm watching golf more missing shots because we're going to show you what the ducks are doing. I racist. I hate the long interview with the sponsor of the tournament. Yeah, the name sponsor of the tournament, where we need to hear what your bank is doing for the community, and it's good and nothing but love for the Salesmanship Club
here in town. Like I understand, charity is a huge part of the PGA tour, but god, that eight minute yea interator with some white dude. Put it on YouTube right, tweet it out. So Yeah, started his second round on Saturday, bogie bogee, double bogie bogie. They thought he was going to rally from the seventy six on Friday. It was bad. It was bad. It was as bad as I could have guessed. To finish that far back from the second worst golfer is bad. Is it
worse than you anticipated or about exactly what you thought. That's worse than I thought it worse. I think it'd be sixteen. It's worse because you thought it was going to be terrible. Yeah, I thought it was gonna be bad, really, but seventy four and a half is over under. He beat that just on the lane last day and he topped the ball and he shanked the ball. It was it was terrible, Yeah, it was. It was so bad that Look, even if he really gets together, he
can't contend he does not belong playing with these sharks. Yeah, not yet, genre On and wack O Neeman. Not yet. As we said, he's not playing like ass. But I'm starting to do some things that I used to do. So it's like, okay, use the Live Tour as experimental golf. Like he I don't know, preemotionage. So in the actual PGA tournament, they're finishing up this morning because of rain and stuff out in Florida and Austin ekro It is going to be your winner. And that's a
name no one knows. The Lift Tours got all these huge names, and we got Austin Ekrotes out here winning tournaments on the PGA Tour. It's a problem still here. I don't even like golf. But when you guys talk about it, I never changed the dial. You make it interesting and for the tie award, you five down beat dollars before we move on to the next topic. I was using the restroom earlier and ran into unremarkable news hound strip Mare Steve and Man. I did not know he had so many hot
opinions on the situation down at the border. He was talking about building a wall and how he loved razor wires. What's the deal with that guy? Any who? Let's move on from racism to racing. All right. It was the opening week of F one and once again another victory for mad Max. Howard Nube supposed to be invested if they know Max is going to win every week? Is this a problem for F one? Mikey, I'll hang out and listen, Okay, right there not doing anything. You may have
hung up internally, Yeah, it's it was boring it. I watched you did, yeah, most of it. Some of it had it on look. I watched the NASCAR race too, and it was pretty exciting and Kyle Larson ended up winning fairly convincing two but even a convincing when a NASCAR is like two seconds or not even it's just styles of racing. F one is is a very refined style that if you're the it's like soccer or hockey. There's not many goals, but you know they're worth a lot. It's the
same thing with passes in F one. You know they're worth a lot. But if you want pure action, NASCAR's got it beat across the board. If you like the kind of nuance and the sexiness of all of it and the politics of Formula one, it's very exciting. But that said, this is the first race of the season. Bah Rain, Everyone's excited. Let's go, let's see Ferrari Mercedes. Are we getting closer? And friggin' Max and red Bull just smacked everyone. He won by twenty two seconds. Last
year at this race he won by twelve seconds. Oh my god. And last year that Red Bull won every single race except one that Carlo Signs won for Ferrari. They won every race, and last year he set the tone by a twelve second victory. This year he won by twenty two and he could have made it thirty two if he really wanted to. It sucks because like it's so fertile, Like I think they have a lot of American viewers and they're gonna lose them. I don't know if they're gonna lose them,
but it's such a bad time for that level of domination. I was watching with Christina. They went a good fifteen minutes without even turning one camera on Max Verstaffman. It's not worth even looking at because he's just driving out there by himself. Yeah, I guess he's doing it beautifully, but it's just not fun. But then, if you immerse yourself in the sport, yes, the battle for second and third in the podium and the battle for fifth and any points, it all matters, but you got to dig to make
it matter. And for a casual viewer, dude, not not good. I was the race was boring and anything to indicate we might have a challenge to the top of the heap would have been created some optimism, but man, it was not there. I'm interested in the storylines from it though, So yeah, that's the whole trick, and Red Bull might be imploding because people are still mad at Christian Horner and jos vor Stappan who's Max's dad, apparently hates Christian Horner. He's trying to get him run out of there.
So I just saw a headline Max's dad can't go to the Saudi Arabia race this Streek because him and Christian Horner are butting heads. So almost an internal explosion is the only thing that's going to take down Red Bull. But ye, did's either one of you take in any of the Penns Oil four hundred at the Las Vegas Speedway yesterday, yekins, I did. I checked in. You know, Malcolm loves the movie Cars, So anytime I throw on Nascar, he he'll get I'll get a good ten minutes of him watching it.
But yeah, when I when I tuned, it was Kyle, Kyle Larson all the way. He was at the time up I think twenty one seconds in the lead, and he never he never fully gave it up. But I didn't like the feel of the viewing experience of it because it's a very open track. It's a very it's a wider track than what we saw in Daytona a couple of weeks back. Yeah, it just didn't seem like it had that same kind of crunched together intimate feel that you get from that
from that whole Daytona vibe. It it didn't seem like the stands were really like on top of the action. It was very, very flat, like old school bleachery kind of field, and it didn't look like it was very well attended either. Yeah, eighty one hundred thousand. Yeah, you two's in town. It's true. Yeah, I did watch it. Got Larson's a really good race car driver. But is there any big crashes? Not
that I saw. That's the other thing with F one race. There was no yellow flags like one little thing, idiot logan sergeant, who's the one American who finishes last? Every which piss me off? The logan? Oh god, no crashes. At least you'll have a crash or two that spices things up. But yeah, there you go. All right, sports, But well that's some insight you can only get here. But also on Saturday, so on the Automotive e with with Kurt Chase and Big Bolt Bow.
Well, I have to go do a card break with the Collectible Network. Cash has been whipping mass about this for months. Thanks for having me. I'll see you guys in hell.
