Who do we want to be the Cowboys coach next year, and who do we think it will be?

Transcript

It's the downbeat. I'm ninety seven to one. The Freak Cowboys didens coordinator Dan Quinn's meeting and interviewing with the Tennessee Titans and the Carolina Panthers today. We have news on when Mike McCarthy will be meeting and also need to discuss why the Cowboys might have blown their best chance. We'll discuss that now in Sports at seven. Now, Sports at seven. Yeah, a lot of like interviews happening. It's kind of kind of can't sit in your feelings too

long. Here see the Rams DC Raheem Morris is interviewing with the Panthers as well, and the Commanders tomorrow and the Seahawks on Friday against six or seven head coaching jobs available. So you can Carball doing Atlanta today too. If Harball's doing Atlanta, that makes sense. They did Belichick first, which is their most likely their number one target. So I'm gonna play this for you before. This is from Okay, this is from about them Cowboys. This

is one of my nine side hustles. It's a podcast to do in the athletic and my co hoster Kent Garrison, sad Yusef and then John Mishouda and John Mishoda. If you hear him reporting something, you just know that it's mostly accurate. I'm saying he doesn't have a perfect record, but man, it's pretty good. But if we hear you reporting something, oh dude, trust it, Trust it and listen closely, because sometimes I may not formally

report it. I'll just sprinkle it in brilliant like seasoning, like some like some old Bay. You you're like sports Bay. Have sports Bay with a little size of herb and lemon. No is it herb or herb herb? Let's go okay yesterday on about them cowboys? Doesn't carefully to John show that this is real quick. You hear me first, and then you'll hear John all cramp. What do you think will happen? And what do you want to happen? I think that I think that Jerry's gonna stick with Mike.

Good news for you, Sirroy. Thank you Darry for believing in me. I like, what do you think will happen? What do you want will happen? And I wanted to play that yesterday and we didn't do it. We'll do right now. Let's do it right now. What do you think will happen? What do you want to Okay, I'll go first, and I wish you hadn't to play that because I I think he's gonna stick with Mike McCarthy. I think we laid that out yesterday. Yeah, kind of

like probably how this is gonna end up. What do I want to happen? I want Bill f and Belichick here. And I say it as a qualifier. It's because I'm not a cowboy fan necessarily. I love I love chaos. I want them to win. I want them to win the Super Bowl, but I want chaos. I want talking points and angles and madness that seems to be inevitable no matter who's in any position, as long as

Jerry's around. But I just think the shock and excitement of that announcement, the news interviews will get from Belichick, I just think, and I also think he's the best coach in history, and I think that might be your

quickest path to winning the Super Bowl. And if that's truly the game around here, give me Bill Belichick. But what I think is going to happen as of this very moment, I think Mike McCarthy stays, dang man, It's funny because yesterday you talked about how each day your initial reaction and your initial thoughts about what needs to happen, like on Monday, and you talked about this yestory, how they're probably going to vary as the days go on,

and how or as the oceans calm down and you start getting that more steady hand vibe about the whole process. I could not agree with you more. And I am a Cowboy fan and I do want them to kind of not blow it up, but at least make a big splash. And like you said, Belichick's the greatest coach of all time. You have an opportunity to get him. You're gonna lose Dan Quinn. You might as well just go ahead and clean house. Let Bill bring in his guys. Your roster's

young enough that they are still somewhat malleable. And I think that bringing in Belichick also kind of satiates the thirst for blood for really pissed off Cowboys fans. You can't get past that performance. I know we get further away from it, but that was abysmal. There was no excuse for the Cowboys collectively, from coaching to special teams, to every aspect of that game was a massive wet turd, and you can't make excuses for that. I'm sorry you

cannot make the excuse for that. You have got to do something big to send a message to your team, to send a message to your fans, and give yourself a better head coach. No one's gonna argue that Belichick is a better head coach than Mike McCarthy. You do that now, But what will happen. They're gonna roll him out again. I agree with you. They're going to roll him out again for his last year and give him one more shot. OKAJ think want? What I think will happen is this run

it back with Mike, figure out your defensive coordinator. If dan Quinn leaves, or if dan Quinn doesn't get a job, which is possible, you just do it again and you take like the devil you know as twelve wins. Right, And that's kind of okay, not good enough, not what you want. What I want for being terribly That's what I want is coach prime action in here. Okay, I mean in terms of chaos, and

you want it to get weird. But if I've been football person as much as it is kind of against what I would be about normally, I don't want a defensive head coach hardly. Ever, the Belichick thing makes too much sense, and there's like a lot of people like, well, what if he doesn't he's not relatable to the players good. That's kind of part of the problem is having guys who are a little too relatable to the players. A bit of the issue there. How about guys being scared that they're not

going to get to keep their job if they don't perform well today? Now we're talking, yeah, and that's sort of the root of sports success for our whole lives. Yeah, is the fear of you don't get to do this anymore if you don't do well. You know what I've heard a lot too about this is I mean, there's a lot of discourse about everything going on here, but one thing I keep hearing is, well, will McClay the way they draft players and all that. Let me just say you,

Will McClay is the de facto GM. But you know, I've talked with this a few times and how this works where he sits in the middle coaches over here, scouts over here, front office over here, and he just sits inside of that triangle spinning around, getting everyone's input make the best decision. It ain't like coaches don't get to pick players because it just happened.

Dan Quinn took Mozzie Smith, Mike McCarthy took a look Scoomaker. So the idea that Bill Belichick would be, like, I gotta be able to pick players. Now, if Bill Belichick's come in and wants full control, that's a no go. You know, if Harball wants full control, that's a no no go. You're not getting that, Like, you're just not. We have a system here that kind of works, even though it didn't work this year in the draft. We have a drafting system and development system that

does work, and it's proven that it works. So you can't come in and just get everything you want and start pushing out people. Okay, like that, you can push out some people, but not Will mcclay's. But the idea that coach can't pick his player is crazy Taco Charlton, which Will

McClay has gone to bat for Rod Marinelli's saying that he did that. No, you know, like there's there's some things there that I just think Bill would get to pick a few players like he wouldn't have any say, he would have a huge voice absolutely in that decision making process, and they'd be a fool enough to listen to him. Do you think he well, see he has drafted poorly Belichick. Yes, yes, for a decent amount of time. And it's sort of him though, Well, yeah, because he

is New England and that dude gets whatever he wants in New England. I wonder when he interviewed with Atlanta the other day or in his next interviews, if that is a deal or no deal. I buy the groceries, I handle the talent acquisite acquisition. I don't know, and I don't know if. I mean, he's got a lot of leverage, But does he have enough to strut into every NFL city and be like, hey, yeah, if you want to do this, this is how this is going to work. I don't. I don't. I don't know, and I don't.

I kind of don't think so, like I kind of think he might. He might be Okay, he knows he's not gonna walk in with the same power that he just had in New England automatically, like every franchise is different. So then you have to weigh what it means to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, which around here we feel like means a lot. I don't know if Bill Belichick up in New England is sitting there thinking, man, Dallas is still the best gig in town. It's the biggest,

you know, stage there is. I mean, we think that. I don't know if they actually look at it like that they might. And the structure in place here though, is that we're who knows. Maybe he wants a little less responsibility on that personnel end, maybe because it's the way it was for twenty years. That's just continued to be the way it was, and he was the guy picking the players and going through all that. You have these guys with fake titles who do a little bit and help you.

But like this is a little different. Now there's a structure in place here. Now you come here, man, you can focus on coaching these dudes, and if you have a say, we will listen to your say and you will get to pick play right exactly Like I think it's very comfortable, like we want you help it. Yeah, but it's not gonna be the I don't even know if the buck doesn't stop with you and please fire away all any and all ideas and opinions. You're Bill Belichick, but not just

making every decision. And I think he'd be okay with that. I thank you it too, I actually do. And I think you would like it here. I think you would like to prove that he can do it again. And I also think we just assume that Jerry's like wants all credit, and he probably does. Ego maniacs do okay, but we don't know how much because he may be like, God, dang it, I gotta get one, like it might get so desperate. I kept coming back to two

things. Sean Payton's got to be going damn it. If I just waited one year, if I was shown a little bit of patience, I would waited one year. I would not have this problem. Okay, because they're getting rid of Russ. Most likely he might not have the perception that he's unhinged. H because he got weird this year. Yeah, I mean he's already yeah, like weirder, Yeah, weirder probably, And I mean he's taking bong rips too, right, that was a alleged but yeah, certainly

looked like it. Yeah, to chill him out a little bit. The other thing I heard a little bit is well, you can't do this to Dak because Mike McCarthy's been so important for Dak. As if Dak hasn't been a good quarterback in the NFL. Dak was a good quarterback in the NFL before Mike McCarthy walked his ass into the Star And will you you're mad at Dak right now? That's fine. Dak has a playoff problem. The Cowboys have a problem starting fast on offense in the playoffs. That's a thing.

And I don't think it's him cowering down or shrinking to the pressure, but something's up. Okay, that's way different than Dak's got to have McCarthy because he's only been Dak's been fine without McCarthy in his career. Okay, adding weapons helped you here, you know there's McCarty. I'm not saying McCarthy didn't do anything for him. He did. But people acting like that's the only way Dak's good get out of town with that. Would you say that Dak's

got better personnel around him than Romo ever had. I mean, yeah, I think so. CD Lamb what he offered this year was probably statistically better than anything Dez did, and you know Dez and his prime was gosh darn elite. But CD wins more ways than Dez does. But he also had witting to go with that. So yeah, there's a lot of things. Ferguson was really good. I don't know. I think it's pretty cool. I mean, you got all those romo like Heyday years. His number two

was Terrence Williams, So yeah, Brandy cooks better. Yeah, So yeah, I would say yes here because their playoff numbers are identical. I think Dax might be one loss worse. You brought up a name yesterday. I think it was all fair. And here's my dream scenario. You bring Belichick in hiss head coach, right, and he's in charge of defense, just all of it. Dan quinn goes to Seattle, Mike McCarthy's gone. You bring in Greg Roman as I don't know what title, because you bring in

two guys. You bring Greg Roman, and I'm really kind of interested in a guy you named yesterday talking Bobby. You tell Bobby slowan coach bro oh Kingsbury, Cliff Kingsbury, yeap. And you bring Greg Roman, who was the coordinator of the Ravens rushing attack for a long time and just dominant. They had the most creative running strategies and were led the league in rushing almost no matter who they put back there, and it was artwork rushing master.

And then Cliff Kingsbury to be your younger. He's only forty four. You know, he feels like he's a retread, but is your passing coordinator? Basically a passing coordinator. You're willing to pay coordinators above market rate, so that's how you get past either of them really officially being offensive coordinator. I don't even want to call someone a co offensive coordinat that seems odd. It could just be passing game coordinator and running game coordinator. Those two guys are

in charge of the entire offense. Belichick is in charge of the whole defense. And then everyone including Belichick, has a loud voice on player acquisition. But that buck stops with wil McLay. Okay, had you said all this, you know who drafted and Greg Roman is not a fun name, and you look at him, he's kind of roly poly. He's fifty one years old, I think, But that dude has got a big run in the football brain. You are covered, yes, and that was probably the weakness

of Mike McCarthy even in Green Bay, of his offense. If it was not the greatest run designs and things like that, something Kellen was kind of championed for a little bit, and it's not great for the Chargers. You know who drafted Cliff Kingsbury, Bill Belichick? Really two thousand and three, the Patriots drafted Cliff Kingsbury. Now he was a year there. Now,

Cliff, I don't think coach there. I mean he was basically was a player coach anyways, because wouldn't ever gonna be good enough to play really, but he was there. Yeah, I never want met there's a coach or anything, but there you go. Two thousand and three. The other connection I forgot if I mentioned this on the show yesterday or if I did that on my podcast. You know Zeke? Did we talk about Zeke yesterday? No, Zeke played for the Patriots last year because Belichick I believe this to

be true. Belichick hollered at the Jones An's he anything left? Because yeah, you didn't know that. Like it's not like there's no connection, Like there is something there. Now if the Falcons just go get it done and the Cowboys are here sitting and fumble farting around over here. Belichick might just say, screw it, that's that's a great job. I'll go take Atlanta off itsive weapons. We'll figure out our quarterback and move on. But this is the best job opening by far, unless you want to. I don't

think the Eagles are gonna fire their coach. Well, it's not even a job opening yet, exactly, You're not. The Cowboys aren't going to interview Belichick until they fire McCarthy. Yeah, which does well, But I wonder how that could be bachanneled, you know, and you can be made as far as I wonder, how do you need to sit down and have a four hour interview with Bill Belichick? No, I mean I don't. I don't know. There's probably a couple things you gotta get clear, and that's

it that can be covered on a zoom call. This is something that was interesting, interesting too, involving Dan Quinn. So of all the this thing and this is gonna be a little the New show, but I'll make it quick here. Of like offenses in the NFL and how much motion they use, Okay, which is a significant thing if you just talk about making defenses think about stuff. And there's some stats that are out there about dan quinn

struggling against quote unquote the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree. Miami Dolphins number one motion eighty three percent of their plays ed motion, the Rams, Sean McVay seventy percent motion, the forty nine or seventy five percent motion. Now as I'm sorry, motion at the snow two going in Dolphins, Rams, forty nine Ers, Packers, top four teams in the league. All these coaches are

from the Kyle shanaan coaching tree or whatever. If you go to McCarthy motion percentage, you get down to twenty third in the league, which is dead of Sean Payton. That's by issue was Sean Payton. That's like kind of old school offense. He's gonna come ring in here. And I think that number got better as the season went on, like after the very beginning. Yeah yeah, the media diva went in there. Yeah, not a diva. I thought it was a computer hard drive full of audio that will prove

okay, I'm sorry, he's not a diva. Now here's some dudes that are. The contracts are up, Tony Pollard, see ya, thank you for your time. Contract up gone. I think so gotta be. You don't pay running backs. No, I completely agree. Don't nobody tag him either. No one should know that clearly than this team. Yeah, Deefon Gilmour probably gone if he wants to be here. Cool. I think part reason they're playing zone too is because he was hurt. I think he was.

Maybe he's hurt because he doesn't wear any pads. Yeah, guys wear pads. Aren't there to say football guys throw the pads on in safety, so you have bland and digs next year, Tyron Smith are Tyron Smith's Sorry, Tyron Smith. I had no idea. I had no idea what to do a couple of years. Yes, retire, just go so you know he'll be rich and happy and Tyler and gigantic Tyler. Betish you ever spend

any time with You've spent time with Tyron Smith? Right? Yes? I went to a MAVs game and he was in the suite and it's just you almost can't stop looking. The sweetest guy. He's so sweet, but it's one of those you shake his hand and I'm like, oh my god, he's just a monstrous human and absolutely sweet. How you've been we've been up to you know, like, yeah, cool dude, but striking to just look at just sheer size. But yes, retire Tyler Beiottish, pretty pretty

solid, you know, solid. But I can't pay people because I gotta pay ceedee lamb. I mean it's probably going to extend Dak, and I'm probably going to at least discuss paying Michael Parsons. I can't do a lot. Now we can restructure things, and signing Dak will actually create more money for you. I'm sick of these players getting tenure and expecting to be paid. This makes it so hard. You just stopped. Jordan Lewis Jonathan Hankins, like, man, you just got gashed on the run. Ideally Mazzie

Smith takes over that role, but I kind of need you. And then we said with Tony Powler, gon Rico Dawdle's a free agent two and it just you violates every rule known to football. Don't pay running backs, you just draft them. But any draft picks for offensive lineman now too. If I'm letting Tyron go and I'm letting Tyler Biatisch go, I mean, dude, they blew it. They blew their chance. And it's not like it's unfixable. There are a lot of things you can do to make it right,

but ah, that hurts. And that's why Jerry was borderline crying the other day. He knew it, and he looked over the Packers just like they did, and they got cute. Told you they tried to out fox the bear. The Packers are the current NFL bear. They are hitting on all cylinders and I think they get smoked by fourteen against San Francisco on Saturday night. But you just can't do that, and you can't do that to Jerry either and survive it. If Min MacArthur survives this, then Jerry Jones

is weak. He let Garrett go for ten years. He's gonna. I just got embarrassed at home by the seventh seed. Jerry's weak. I wonder if that win, that fool's gold win against the Commanders in the final regular season game for the Cowboys played into this like they thought, like the way they performed maybe the previous three weeks was the Anoma and they show up and destroy Washington and in their minds it's like, oh, Okay, this is

who we are. We're back. No, And it was just another case of them annihilating a garbage team where they kind of had that sense of because I kind of bought into that. I if you remember, we were doing our predictions and I was like, oh, they seem to put it together against the Commanders. Okay, they're back, And that's where my mind was because I thought they were gonna win and cover against Green Bay, and collectively all of them they thought that they had that in their head. It's like,

oh, we're back, babies. It felt good to beat somebody, but they knew Washington wanted to lose. Basically, yeah, I mean Washington lost eighth straight to ensure they got the second pick overall. So no, I don't think they're full by that particular game Cowboys by they locked in to pick twenty four. All right, Well, I have plenty of stuff for you there coverage tomorrow, but not time rate. The coverage we need now

involves Danny Maylis. If you are in the market for a new iPhone case, wouldn't you want one that survived a drop from an Alaskan Airlines flight of sixteen thousand feet and the iPhone was intact. We'll tell you what brand that was next
