Transcript

This is the Downbeat on ninety seven to one The Freak California. A good morning The Downbeat, Kevin Danny Mikey JJ six percent each and every morning I'm paying off this teas right quick? Do we already have callers or whatever contestants line up? A right cool? We'll get to a fun little game with Dingu dupe the Dingu in just a moment. But I just got an email seven forty five am, twenty two minutes ago, and we have kicked this

around. The Spear in Las Vegas, an interesting concert venue that has hosted U two for most of a very long residency, and the band Phish is going in there for four shows right in the middle of April, and we're kind of wondering what's next for him. And I just got this email a few minutes ago about a band who has eighteen nights scheduled an eighteen night residency over six consecutive weeks from May sixteenth through June twenty second, And I guess

you guys can place your bets. So one thing that I've been thinking about the Spear stuff is the band. A context clue here is because the Sphere is owned by MSG, so it's the Dolan family and they have connections with Fish, they had connections with you two. So if there's any band that always plays Madison Square Garden, it's like a thing they do. Then think about that, they could play at the sphere. Great stuff, but I could be wrong, Detective a little sarcasm. Well, was that helping you

come up with any guesses? Or is it helped? Well, when you said band, it changed things because yeah, okay, that's your better clue. Yeah, when you said band, because there's a lot tons of solo acts. You said lived there, delicious good, This gonna sound and a little off the beaten path and maybe too small. I'm gonna say LCD sound system. That's way too small. It's a fun guess. It's not a huge menu though, like like pop Star, but like the first person that

came to mind was Katie Perry, but she's got a Vegas residence. It's not a band. It is a band. Ad oh, okay, Coldplay that comes to mind. No big visuals. My guess is it's a it's a legacy band that's been around for a while. Correct. If it's a new band, you're not going to be able to pull that type of that runoff. Yeah, it's got to be probably a pretty how long was you U Two's run like DAM two or three months? Right? Yeah, it have to be somebody that's active, that's been around for a long time.

That's good, that's good that it has a big reach. Okay, big reach mainstream here we go, mainstream maybe stream. That's actually somewhat difficult question to answer. I would say yes, but I don't know what then you mean by mainstream things, you know, And it's got to be somebody that would do it, you know, like we talked about Radiohead all the time. That would be one that you would think, but they'd never do something like that. I'd be freaking out a whole lot harder if it was Radiohead.

Yeah, they done the super Bowl before. No, No, Okay, that weeds out a lot of people. I'd say, and this band isn't exactly what this band was when they rose to prominence, but they're kind of a different incarnation of themselves. I would also say this band, yeah because of Death Foo Fighters. No, that's not a bad guess. I will say this band is U closely associated with one of the two bands that is already playing or scheduled at the Sphere Fishing You Too, Grateful, Dead

Dead and Company Dead for Ever live at the Sphere at Las Vegas. That tracks man, Yeah, for sure, because people they were done. I thought last year was their go away tour. Got these people, what are they getting paid to do this? Nobody goes away as long as there's cash on the table tedy. Oh. It was funny that all the Taylor Swift stuff and of the Chiefs Ravens games, and then NFL on Fox put out a great tweet like our big music celebrity and it's a picture of Bob Weir

on the sidelines of the forty nine ers game. It's like, yeah, the young people, you guys watched Chiefs and Ravens forty nine ers lines is for the old Bob Weir there. It was very funny. He's on the sideline with this huge beard. Football all right, man, love football man. So Dead End Company residency at the Sphere eighteen shows six weeks May sixteenth through June twenty second. John Mayer, Yeah, he's been playing with this. I would assume yes, but that's not written in the in the right

up here. These will be sold out. Tickets will be expensive. Yeah, I wonder if they're going to be crazy, is in any way reaction to the Fish thing, because those tickets are through the damn roof and people will travel. Yeah. The elder statesmen that are that are a grateful Dead fans for the most part, are in that demographic that have probably indispensable income, and they'll they'll spend thousands and thousands of dollars on this tree and go

to multiple shows. Yeah. So the benefit of a band that doesn't play the same show every night, and you too, I think did essentially do that, but Fish won't and Dead forever. So eighteen thousand, six hundred people can feel the sphere. You know what is at the sphere? There are obstructed view seats in the first section, the one hundred section. If you're in the back half of that, the two hundred section hangs over it, and you can't look up and see the entire sphere. Okay, so

it's kind of like a balcony situation. Yeah, you're the under the balcony. That sucks. Oh yeah, it really sucks. So as I mean, I'm going to the Fish shows there, but and there are some tickets that are significantly lower priced. But you have to kind of know that instead of saying, oh my god, back of one hundred section, this looks incredible, but you'd be directly underneath the thing, and you have you know,

it's like you're wearing a hat. It's crazy. I wonder if at some point, and I can't wait to hear your review of it, at some point, do the visuals just become Okay, we get it. I just want to hear the band, you know. Well. I wonder if they're gonna have specific stuff to interact with the songs for Fish or Dead Now Dead does claim that they are doing a full yet never before seen visual storytelling with the ultimate connection of the music through these innovative immersive shows, So they

are going to have the whole thing dancing together. I really hope Fish does as well. I hope they don't just run the cool tricks that they can do while Fish is playing, like all the Stockhouse stuff. Yeah, and I don't know if it's a blend of those. But when Cash went and saw you Too, he said they didn't utilize the entire sphere for the entire

show. You know, they focus everything forward on the band, and then they expand that and then there's a few set pieces where you know grass is growing or it's turned a brick and the bricks or fault whatever, but it's not over overpowering. I guess. I don't think you can play there unless you spend all the time and money to specifically craft it to your set. But bands like Fish and You're Grateful Dead, you have no idea what they're

playing, never play the same set twice. You two was playing the same thing every night. Yeah, I was gonna guess Roger Waters, but I think a residency of that link for a man that's eighty years old being the singer, I don't think he would be able to stand up to that kind of toll on his voice that sell that probably. Yeah, Well they're doing

Fish for four nights, and Roger Waters is four nights. Absolutely sure, eighteen nights, especially if for the Dead though you know the devil, you know the DEVI will do it. I mean Fish could do eighteen nights and they would do fines does bands like they just have people that just go to every show. I can't say smart people. The old joke is, I don't know how many fans we have, but I know that they come to

all of our shows. Like, I can't say that if Waters did agree to do a run of the Wall that I probably would try to find a way to go. I'm serious, because that was one of the best shows I've ever seen at the American Airlines Center about ten fifty twelve years ago. I think it was insane. It was to have that access to that type of media and you'd be in the wall interact to media. Yeah, of course, and every lyric would be pre planned and designed. Yeah, don't

think he's not thinking about that. Well, I might kill him. Well, he'd have to space it out a little bit. But don't think he's that hasn't crossed his mind to have that type of visual media available to him to integrate with his his live show. It's it's interesting they're doing a bunch of residencies. I mean, they're going to get to a point where they do start doing one or two offs. They're not there yet. Yeah, it's got to be because you know there are bands who who would loved I

mean, I just I'm sorry, I'm just real quick. Like The Killers are playing in a residency at the Coliseum, Okay, four thousand people in it. You can't get a ticket if you want to go like the ticket Master, it doesn't work because more people want to go to it. Now, an eight thousand person venue, I've been better. They're not big enough for eighteen thousand, Like that's that sort of the spirit gets so big. It's like, I don't know, if it was a ten thousand venue,

the demand for these shows would be insane. And that's where they started. The demand's gonna be nuts right now for all these residencies. But once they get to a point two or three years from now where they're doing one offs there, like how will it so? Will they be? Will just be all residencies? I have two ga pit tickets for Friday Night Fish and I can sell them right now for sixteen hundred bucks each. My god, my god, crazy. You want to get to this, Yeah, let's do

it. Let's dupe the Dinger. Our friend Danny has an incredible wealth of knowledge on assorted assorted subjects, but one that I'm just fascinated with is his big brain for nineteen eighties metal bands, hair metal, whatever it is. I mean, you can just name one and he can essentially tell you every member of that band. I don't know if it applies to songs and albums.

I hope it does, because that's more the direction we're headed. But we're gonna play a game with two of our listeners called dump the or dupe the dingu and you're gonna have to determine if the question I ask is something that he will know the answer or will not know the answer to. And the winner of this particular contest will win tickets to the upcoming concert with Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper. Wow, you have the info on that. Yeah, it's gonna be happening at a time in the future. It goes on

sale tomorrow nine to eighteen at Dicky's Arena. Okay, Sceptember eighteenth at Dickies Tickets on Ticketmaster tomorrow. So I think we have two contestants on the phone. We got JJ with Corey and Justin. I'm I'm going to be JJ for a minute, Corey and Justin and then Eric and Arlington. There. Yes, I am, good morning, downbeat, Good morning Corey. How are you this morning? Doing well? I'm doing well? How about yourselves? Fine? Thanks for you on your way to work? I am I'm

I'm actually just getting started on my route. So I figured i'd pull over and talk to you guys for just a moment. Conn of route were talking about I run to do pets control, all right, pet control and pest management. All right, Corey, you're gonna plug your biz under pet control? What what thunder? Pest control? Thunder thunder under ponder, ponder pest control under Big Basketball school. You're encouraging you to think you know about pest

control. It should think about it. You should have given Danny a supplement when he took Malcolm to the doctor because he was being a pest courtesy laugh courtesy. Oh my god. All right, Corey, I think they're both that You're gonna stay on right, just terrible. We'll be back and forth. Put them up whatever. All right, help we got Eric and Arlingtonday. Eric, Yes, Eric, what so man? How's the going? What's your whole deal? Uh? I just like to go to concerts?

Cool man. Well, if you can get your head right, you may be going to see Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper. All right, Well, I help you win if you earn it. Now the game here for both you boys is I'm gonna ask a question. I do have multiple choice for these things, but I think we're just gonna go and unless he starts failing, I don't know. I don't know how these are. I think I should be able to request the multiple choice options if I get in a bind.

Yeah, and maybe I could do that. How many questions do you have? I have seven questions? Can I have two where I get to request the trouble? Okay? Yeah? Fine? Three twice you can ask for multiple choice options. So Corey and Eric yeap. All right, So I'm gonna ask him a question. He doesn't say a word. You two have to either say yes or no or he'll get it right or he'll get it wrong. And you can choose the same it's fine, or if you

choose differently, that's fine as well. And then that's where the strategy comes out. Yeah, and then the dinger will blow your minds with his incredible knowledge or let you down. And whoever has the most points. When'esay's tickets sound good, I will disappoint you both. Uh hello, I guess that sounds good. I don't know if they're on hold or not. I never know what's happening here. I don't know what anyone's doing. All right,

question one, dingu it might be the hardest one. I start with, I don't know what ax Man replaced Inguay Malmstein in Alcatraz for the band's second album. What ax Man replaced Malmstein in Alcatraz with two z's for the band's second album, Corey well Ding, you get this right or not? I think he might know this one. I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with the on this Eric. Are you guessing they'll get this right? Will we dupe the Dingu so I can guess? Yes? Also, yeah, you

can guess whatever you want. Sure, Yeah, I think he knows it all right. They're both saying yes, the Dingu will know it. Danny What axe Man replaced Ingway, Malmstein and Alcatraz for the band's second album. I hate to do this this early, but I'm gonna need to hear the multiple choices on this multiple on question one is a harbinger of things to come. No, I think that's a good strategy. Your four options are Steve

I, Warren D. Martini, Brad Gillis, George Lynch. Which of those ax Men was in Alcatraz for the band's second album, Give me those Gillis, Warren D. Martini, Brad Gillis, George Lynch. I gotta go with Steve VII. I don't think any of those other guys played in Alcatraz. The answer is Steve Vay. WHOA. That is a point because Warren de Martini was in rat Brad Gillis was a night ranger, and who

was the other one? George Lynch Dawkin for in North Carolina. You don't have to show off when you guess one, right, I do when I have to go to multiple choices early in the game. One, Okay, it's one one. Corey and Eric each have one question. Two what year did Pantera release their first album? Corey? Actually, Eric, Eric, I definitely think he knows this one. Corey same yeah, I think he knows this one, both voting yes. Uh dingu what year did Pantera release

their first album? First album would have been Metal Magic, that's correct, and that would have come out in the very early eighties. And I want to say, well, I think it's either eighty two or three. I gotta go earlier, though I feel like it was earlier than you think. I'm gonna go eighty two. Metal Magic, Pantera's first album was released on June tenth, nineteen eighty three. Three correct. That's a point for six months off. I'm so sorry. One Mikey gets one point. The Dingu

Son of a Bitch Question three. Although this band had a nice career for themselves, they're more famous for supplying Metallica with Kirk Hammett. Who are they? Corey? I think he knows this one. Eric, Yeah, you know what? I think he does too. I mean, this is Metallica, this is his wheelhouse. What band was Kirk Hammett in before he joined Metallica? I think Kirk Hammett left Exodus, the album before Bonded by Blood came out, So I'm gonna go with Exodus. Bonus information included with the

correct answer. Exodus is where Kirk Hammock was before he joined Metallica. All right? Two to two? Two to two? Corey and Eric showing down. Oh yeah, all right, this one I have no I have no idea if he knows this stuff or not. The question is for the DINGU What what band was responsible for the nineteen eighty seven album titled Scum Eric, Yeah, I think he knows this one too. Okay, Corey, I

think he does knowledge. We're gonna have to separate him if they're gonna keep playing that they're in lockstep, well, he's gonna have to get what he got one wrong already. Yeah, what band was responsible for the nineteen eighty seven album titled Scum. I have no idea. I got to go with maultis all right, he's burning his second multiple choices and final multiple scum, Scum? Was it d R I? Was it Brutal Tooth? Was it Napalm Death? Was it sore Throat? Okay, I've never heard of two

of those bands, Napalm Death and DR. It sounds like it could be a DRI album, but that you said eighty seven nineteen eighty seven album titled Scum. No, And for the record, I didn't make up any of these band names. These are all okay, I'm gonna rule out I'm gonna rule out DRI because that I'm gonna rule out Napalm Death. Who were the other two? Uh? DRI I, Brutal Tooth, Napalm Death, sore Throat, sore Throat and Brutal Tooth. I'm gonna go with sore Throat,

Dan, He's going with sore Throat. Total guess. Nineteen eighty seven album titled Scum brought to you by Napalm Deck much about. That's the point for Mike. That included their hit track human Garbage. Let's uh let's commonly used phrase. Yeah, and then he got left. We can speed zone. We have three more, We're speed zone. I can't do a multiple choice? Okay, before donning spandex for rat what band did Juan Carlos Crusier play for Corey Quick? He doesn't know it? There you go, Eric,

Yeah, I don't think he knows this. God Danny one Crusier I believe was the original bass player for Dowkin before he was replaced by Jeff Pilson. Absolutely right, Docin is the correct point for Mike. I take the lead. Who replaced the ousted Kevin Dubro in Quiet Riot for one album in nineteen eighty eight? Corey, Corey, do I know this? Does not know this? Eric? No way? Ding you who replaced Kevin de Brow in nineteen eighty eight for how long? One album? Riot? Oh? Was

it? Oh? God? Was it? Paul Shortino of rough Cut? It was damn Paul rough Cut. Another point for Mikey. I'm gonna win this thing, all right, last one? Here we go. You guys are tied to to you know what you have. Guys are underestimating me. You have to choose differently. And Eric, you're picking first? What band sang the hit songs Sinister, Double Chain, Gang Woman and rocking with You? Yeah, I think he knows this one. Eric says, yes, he knows it. Corey, you have to choose. No, he doesn't.

You gotta say no. Give me those song titles one more time, Sinister, double Chain, Gang Woman, rocking with You? And I think this is a hard one. And because it's hard and it's for all the marbles, I'm gonna give you four options. I need the multiple choice. Grim never heard of the song Grim Reaper, Van Denberg, Hurricane Malice. It's gonna be either Hurricane or Malice because I know songs by the other bands, Hurricane or Malice. I'm gonna go with Hurricane. Can I guess Danny

goes with Hurricane? What My Time Out? Whoa Sinister? What double double Gang Woman? Rocking with You? Hurricane? Danny goes with Hurricane, And that is in correct. Malice, damn Malice. Corey is your winner of the h You did it, Corey did the best of what could Those are hard, right? They weren't easy. Okay, they were not easy. You don't just roll out of bed and dupe the dinger, No you don't.

You gotta get your head right. If you'd have said see you in hell or rock you to hell, obviously, sorry, Eric, you didn't win anything, man, Oh bummer heay. Guess what, Eric, you have to miss Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, guess what? Listen? Listen to KT right now? Eric, how often do you listen? Every day?
