Transcript

You're listening to the downbeat. I'm ninety seven to one the freak. You know this one, Mike, This sounds like a popular sitgom sitcom from the early nineteen nineties. This is a fat, dark country song from the early nineties. So very close is this? Used to be a cowboy? This is should have been a cowb should have been a cowboy? What if it used to have been? Yeah? Used to have been a cowboy? Should have been a cowboy? He I do know this one. He hascidd to

be a country singer. I guess or fun fact about Toby Keith who passed away. That's the breaking news this morning from More, Oklahoma. Dad at the age of sixty two. He was going to be a petroleum engineer, which normally leave it up. Crank it cuties please. I should have been a cowboy, I mean, should have learned a road. Okay, we're in my six suit riding. It's already weird because I've never listen to Toby Keith, or I've never really thought of him as much more than a kind

of a country music punchline representation of songs that I don't listen to. But already you play that. I'm like, all right, it's not terrible that nineties and that's look, that's that's a good era of country music. It is nineties country is great. I want to learn and now you have to. No, I'm not gonna put a lot of time into this, but this, I mean, this is someone's hearing this right now for the first

time. And yes, hearing that. Toby Keith passed away this morning or last night maybe, but it was announced just three hours ago on their official Twitter accounts. So that's why this is gonna be the most important thing in the world. Kevin, Oh it is. Yeah, we'll do the intro for it. Okay, this sounds like a terbly Keith song mid career. Who I get time to beat your ass? That's pretty good, Tobe. You got it down, down, put it down. The most important thing

in the world is brought to you today by Santiago's Taco Condoms. Remember this one, Oh, I don't make your next intimate moment a Mexican feast With Santiago's Taco Condoms. Experience a safe, romantic evening while enjoying the flavors from South of the border. Santiago's Taco Condoms come in three exciting flavors, bistic, poyo and al pastoor. You'll be the Santa Ana of love when you're thumping that ass like a pinata with Santiago's taco condoms, Bueno Sexo, romantico

Hispanics. That's a tease. The master last Danny's sponsors came out with their famous incredibly funny with their famous cat phrase from Bob Costas. There's like thirty of them on there. I laughed for ten minutes. That led Zeppelin gum. Yeah, it's so good. Not a lot there. You'll be dazed and confused with flavor. Led Zeppelin gum the most important thing in the world, as we told you. The death of Toby Keith, country music star.

Also bigger WWE fan Mike all Right loved wristling. It's also weirdly he was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The thing you should know about Toby Keith outside of his music career, I think if you're having trouble visioning him, I think a lot of people probably do know. But there are people in our audience who may have never heard of him, seen him. Maybe they've heard the name, don't know Toby Keith had one of the more powerful mullets of our era. I mean, we're talking Kenny Powers like. It

was a superior mullet, big curly locks. It is older days. I think he had not gone that path, But in the nineties when he was first coming through, he had a mullet like no other. I'm looking up pictures. I didn't. I don't know that. Yeah, that looks like the main of a lion. He doesn't. That is incredible, Oklahoma Lion. It is his first album, Toby Keith. He's really rocking it. And then he's got another album called Boomtown that was really good in the early

nineties. We'll play a little bit for you at seven thirty. We had a minute ago, a couple of calls if you went a weigh in on this or this is as has affected you in an emotional way or not two and four or eight one seven seven eight seven one nine seven to one.

I think Danny Rode up a good point too. He might have been a little misunderstood politically, and I think he you know, he played Trump's inaugural rally, so you know when you do that, or one just assumes that you're that and you're forever that, but he was not always like hardcore you know, or right you know or anything like that. He played for George Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Yeah, he self proclaimed independent.

He claimed his political views were described as a Democratic Democrat conservative or conservative democrat. So he liked to kind of, you know, exist in the middle. And how can you really fault a dude for that where everybody is picking a side and going to farther extremes of that side. I don't know. I think sometimes maybe a centrist way of being measured and considering everybody's thoughts

and opinions as being valid is maybe not a bad idea. I think he was pretty misunderstood, and he did get like a lot of people at that time. I think a lot of people, because of the emotion that surrounded the attack on our nation in two thousand and one, probably made a lot of choices under emotional duress. And I think that his response to in song to that event with what was the name of that tune, the Courtesy the Red, White, and Blue. Yeah, I always called it, get

boot in your ass. I'll give you a little bit of that. Can I give the x's and o's just as we're kind of breaking the news. Yeah, yeah, so yeah. Toby Keith, sixty two years old, passed away. He passed peacefully on Monday night, his family shared on a statement posted on Twitter. Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in twenty twenty two. They said, quote, Tobe Keith passed peacefully last night, February fifth,

surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage, and please respect the privacy of his family at this time, they say. He did speak about his cancer diagnosis in September of twenty twenty three at the People's Choice Country Awards, and at the time he said his cancer struggle is a little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days. You know, you're up down, up, down. It's always zero to sixty and

sixty to zero. But I feel good today, It's what he said, and he was joined on the red carpet by his wife in nearly forty years, Trishia Lucas and then Yeah, December twenty three played his first official headlining show since his diagnosis. That was in Las Vegas, and he was in good spirits and all that, and yeah, I ended up some coming to cancer. Just on Monday, evening. Yeah, so yeah, I mean

it's just sad and he what a battle too. It seems like he'd kind of gone at it for hardcore for a couple of years and like we'd mentioned earlier, kind of faded out of out of our consciousness. And I was pretty shocked to open up my computer this morning and the lead story everywhere Toby

Keith passed away of stomach cancer. But kind of to complete the thought on you know, we're maybe opinions changed on him, is when he, you know, did the Red, White and Tune and I was pretty polarizing at the time, and depending on where you stood on all that stuff, he either loved it or hated it. And that's just a shame because I don't think that's what he was all about. I mean, he was just a regular dude from Oklahoma. He wasn't one of those made by Nashville stars.

You know, he earned his stripes. He in that industry. You know it was an oil field guy and had a decent acumen for music. And I'll tell more of his story later on in Dingo's Morning News. But he kind of walked back a lot of that stuff later in life too. You know, he got in a big battle with a verbal battle with what's her name from the Dixie Chicks. They were called that at the time, the Chicks now Natalie Mains Yeah, And there was some real venom spun back and

forth between the two. And he looked back on that time later on he goes, Yeah, it's kind of embarrassing to think that I let myself get wrapped up so much and that conjecture and backbiting and stuff like that. So, you know, it seems like the guy was a pretty pretty centrist measured dude overall. That just uh, you know, yea, as we all did. Man, we were that affected a nation, man, No,

no doubt. He was very good about going to visit the troops to you know, all over the place during for you know, a good portion the last two decades, you know, And that song was huge, But he had other songs too that were kind of and I think there's another song that was pretty huge about ten years ago called American Soldier and things like that. So he had a bunch of but he would go like to all these camps,

you know, across the world and go visit them. So I mean, I think that's something he really cared about Everybody probably cared about that more than any of the politics. Let's go, we had a Mike and Gravevine on the line. Let's say what's the way and what's up? Mike? How you doing? Man? Oh, what's up? Guys. I'm a

little heartbroken this morning about Tobe Key's pass. And to be honest with you, guys, man like Mikey and uh, you guys know, I'm a marine veteran sixteen years Uh and you know it was in the Marine Corps where nine to eleven happened. And uh, you know, he just uh true

American man to me, he spocus, spoke his mind. And basically what I loved about Tobac Keith is, uh he's supported of the troops a lot, like you said, Kevin, and uh yeah, man, he's gonna be sorely missed, especially through the veteran community because we all respected him for that. Can I ask what, because you know, I don't even know last year whatever we talked, you know, what we were doing on nine to eleven. But being in the Marine Corps on nine to eleven had to

be quite a unique experience. Where were you physically and how that go down? Yeah? It was crazy, Mike you. I was an instructor at the School of Infantry at Kempdlton in California, and uh we we basically we had some uh some trainings that we were training putting through. I thought the

taught the on infantry guys. So basically everybody else besides infantry they come for like a seventeen day course and uh we were out there at the range and we showed up and our company gunny sergeant was like, Hey, I need to get all the instructures together and basically got us all together and told us what happened and said that the Pentagon had get hit two. If you have any family members that are that were there, if you want to go home and call them, or if you want to call them, go ahead,

take your time, which I do. I did at the time have a cousin who was a Navy officer that was there at the Pentagon when it happened, and uh but yeah, that's that's where I was. And uh, I'll never forget it. Man. It was quite an experience and seeing the video footage and all that stuff and on a I guess kind of funny note all of us. Instructor was like hey, start major. We want to get out of here where y'all want to go. We want to go over

there and fight. And he's like, y'all leave, who's going to train everybody? We're like, well, I'll don't figure it out. You know, we wanted to go get paidback, man. So yeah, yeah, emotional time. Let me ask you this and maybe you obviously had a lot of buddies at the time. So when Toby was, you know, doing this kind of I know it could be perceived by some as like a more of like a gingoistic anthems. Do you did you ever get the sense that

what did you feel like he was truly authentic about it? Or did you ever kind of question It's like, I wonder if this guy is just trying to capitalize on the emotions of a nation for uh, you know, to to write these songs knowing how popular they're going to be because we were kind

of galvanized as a nation then for for profit. Was that ever something that crossed your mind, because I know he was accused of that in the media, right Danny me personally, No, I did post something on Facebook earlier on my own page, and one of my buddies that's from Oklahoma, that's all about Oklahoma. Was like, yeah, I never really got into him. And every time we'd go into chowel and they played that song, he was like, We're kind of like okay, you know, but everybody perceived

it and takes it different and that's fine. But me personally, no, I never did. I do. Remember while I was then also to my uh my cousin, I don't I'm the only sibling or don't have any siblings. So I had two cousins that grew up with and the young one he had two daughters at the time that were like ten and eight, and uh,

they were very talented girls. And when I came home one time, they basically put on me are uh one of the American Soldier and they basically sing it to me because they uncle Mike's solim, you know, and we love him and support him and this and that. So but yeah, just you know, people's different take on it, and that's fine, you know. Yeah, I think, well, first of all, Mike, thank you, thank you for calling in and waiting on this. Good to see

you and the wife the other night over at Alamo Draft House. Thank you for your time, man, Thanks for listening there you go. Yeah, thanks, so appreciate it. Have a good one. If if you're gonna JJ for crank me up for it. If you know, if you're gonna do a song like that, make it aff and banger. You know. My problem was always with that Jackson who sat behind a little acoustic guitar and it was so sad. I'll say this. Keith said, screw that,

We're gonna kick ass. Let's be clear. The Toby Keith Red White and Blue song. I really doubt that that was an anthem for the military. That was more for the general public, because everyone knows that the soundtrack for modern war is Drowning Pool. It's not Toby Keith, our local friends Drowning Pool who love Rollertown beer weirdly, which is you know their balls. Okay, here here's this. You'd be sorry that you messed with you, miss, because we have put a boot in your ass. It's Sam Conway.

Put your name at the Tommaha bless and standsted shack miss and eagle will man. That's gone on me. When you and him on the Freedom starting, it'll be like the whole line's raining down. O the red wide red wid I mean it sounds like a like a from a South Park movie. When you start the song, you know it does. It is a little bit. But Uncle Sam put your name on the top of his list, and the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist. She's getting that fist ready.

Okay, I don't know this song's about sodomy. It's not we'll put a boot in your ass. That is not a normal act. It's just about how we are gonna whoop your ass. Yeah, yeah, at war. We're good at war. We're really good at war. I don't know. I you heard. I've heard that's on a thousand times that it's a joke and it's hard to change stamps on the morning that Toby Keith passes away and I'm not. But that's a funny song. It is a funny song.

Lyrics are pretty crazy. Yeah, we'll have more on this at seven thirty eight thirty. Let us do about the day if you guys went await and keep on shooting your text in and calling two and four eight one seven seven eight seven seven one. But now on the day of Toby Keith's passing, let's do birthdays. Okay, Because he joins the list if his death date, it's very important. Well, it's actually not, because that we do birthdays not death dates. Damn it. Do you have the amount of people

whose birthdays today but they are dead is shocking. It's a lot, and it's all huge names. Let's go blow us away, Kevin, Bob Marley would have been seventy nine. This new movie looks interesting. I think what JJ next week? Yes, I hope they don't see say yes, you think they're gonna screw it up? I hope they don't. They usually do when they do music biopics. You know, I feel like they're better now than they used to be. Maybe, I don't know, like they don't

do they blow them still? I don't know. I think it's gonna be great. Frankly, as much as I know a dozen Bob Marley songs, I don't, I don't know enough about the dude, So I'm actually looking to learn dude. There's a uh Sually, there's a really great little mini documentary on him in the making of one specific record that you would love.

His story is fascinating and I hope they cover a lot of the real stuff about Bob and not just the you know, the bullet points and basically like everybody that I knew when I was in my early mid twenties had the Legend CD, which is just a compilation greatest hit probably what I have. Yeah, there's so much more to him. It's it's mind blowing. He died of cancer, right, yes, but he also was shot. Yes, he survived the shooting. Yes. See, I don't I need to learn.

Yeah, it's a it's a wild ass ride man. Now, who was the guy that they interviewed? Was that his son? That was that was Damien? That was Damien at the Grammys? I thought it was I thought he said it was Damien. Okay, that was Ziggy's always around too. Yeah, the guy that you could not understand anything that he was saying because his Jamaican accent was so pronounced. Where's that on the accent ranking board?

I kind of love it. I love it. Yeah. My neighbor across from me, he just moved back to Jamaica about a year ago, was Lincoln and he was a Jamaican through and through, but he lived here for twenty twenty five years. Wild man. But I would have go out and have some whiskey with him every year on his birthday, bring him a bottle of a Crown Royal, Crown Royal, and he's just super appreciative. And we would always have a drink together and he would just impart bizarre knowledge

on me. But to hear him deliver anything, and that voice was, you know, it sounded it sounded like it came from a place of knowledge. Pretty badass. Yeah. I always thought it was odd too, because when I grew up Miami, I liked the Hurricanes and Rohan Marley was a badass linebacker. That's right. And I'm like, you're Bob Marley's kid or grand grand kid whatever whatever worked out, and you're just thumping people at the you that's wild. Yeah, what a wild fan. Well, there's a

lot of people in that family. And I want to tell you a little bit later in the show. And now, the bass player of Bob Marley died this week. Family man, my god. Yeah, tweeted about him or reposted something about him. We may get into that, like nine thirty or something. I need to Scientist Spencer Silver would have been eighty three. He invented the post it note in the adhesive uh rip torn would have been ninety. Wait a minute, he invented paper and glue of combining the two.

The adhesive on the back of the post it note that was the key. Yeah, glue, because what's the point if it's a certain type of glue that stays until you take it off and then it goes. It's an interesting invention, actually it is. Rip Torn's ninety three. Have you gut seen the Larry Sanders show? Not much of that. Some rip Torn's great in that, probably a terrible human, but great. Josh Agabor would have been one o seven from Green Acres. Ronald Reagan would have been one thirteen.

Well I'm still alive. Nancy and I are doing crack cocaine in heaven. Okay, just say no. Bavery would have been won twenty nine. Damn the steak diet his when his meal came out, you'll see that last year, his whole like his normal meal, Like here's normal food plan. Insane The amount of stuff he ate. Can you imagine the amount of undigested meat in his colon the day he does every minute of every day, probably like thirty seven pounds of old meat. I asked Norm back in the day,

how he thinks Babe Ruth would do right now? And he's like forty home runs. Oh my god, dude is working at a gas station. And then we got to a long conversation of what me and Donovan Diad we laughed so hard. So we're like, what if Mike Trout was zapped back into nineteen forty or whatever a year, We're like, they would have burned him as a witch. Oh my god, he can fly. Like if Mike Trout zap back in a Babe Ruth era, what he would do to

babeper Man? He tryptonite. Aaron Burr would have been to sixty eight. Aaron Burr known for killing Alexander Hamilton. That's right, they had a getting charged for it. Did they have a duel? He looked like Ron Jeremy and he sounded like Michael Jackson. He was He's great, an entertaining show. Saw him at Club Dotta. Yeah, I think he took a shirt off. He always takes a shirt off and does a weird handstand mid performance. He's amazing and canceled. Yeah, oh

really, what happened? Everybody in that Minnesota alt music scene got wiped out, and a decade ago I did not know this had their way with him. Yeah, man, lady you shot me as a jam. Oh my goshot I saw it in a concert in someone's screaming, play lady, you shot me and he just finally stopped and he was like, I'm gonna play my most popular song. Everyone chill, shut up. I don't play it.

Later he left was a Club Dotta. Well, he left the show early because some guy in the front row kept trying to grab his ding dong when he was up there in underwear. Yeah right, I remember that wasn't me, wouldn't me. Yeah, he has a few allegations there. He he tried to. He wrote a couple of He wrote a song for j Lo, proving again that her career as a scam and much more other birthdays fifty one Amy Robock don't know her for her affair on Good Morning America.
