You're listening to the Downbeat on ninety seven to one. The freak Zach Effron's in town and we're about to tell you about it. Uh. In thirty minutes, we get sports at seven, I get some Ranger stuff. It's a little interesting. There's some leftover Rangers things that we should get to before you know, evaporate. We'll always talk about them. I've been sitting on this story about Austin hedges for two weeks. Now let's go. And I'm
putting my banana down and I'm I'm doing it today. I'm also just looking around the room and saying things that I see or have heard. Say something right now, I heard Zach Efron's coming to town, and then I just saw a banana. Close your eyes and shake your head, shake like shake your head, and then just when you open them, just say the first thing you see, cigar, that's awesome. Say yeah. Now he's doing a w C Field. Say at w C Fields here impression list. God,
dang it, I'll just add it to Danny's list. Green Day tickets. At eight o'clock, you'll get to team up with Danny or Mike Siroy as they go Mono e Mono and music Madness. Who will play the music the Madness Monster card. We'll find out at eight o'clock. Buckle up, pick me gonna be a midweek wildling. Before you get to MI, I t we were talking in the previous segment, bitch, by the way, we start every show every day at six am. It sounded like you said, by the way, by the way, start every show. See I
do it too. I start talking like my homies. Yeah, you know, just kind of fall into that because that's how I talk when I'm not on the air with you guys. That was kind of a topic topic of our conversation is how we kind of pick up accents, you know, the difference in accents and people Hispanic people use proper pronunciation in the flow of being very a neutral dialect, kind of like Mario Lopez, and we talked about
him a bunch. It's funny that to see my two and a half year old start recognizing differences in color of people now, and the little kids are unfiltered. They don't know it's everything. Everything they see is brand new to them. And I told you guys yesterday that we were we went to Chick
fil A over the weekend to mainly see the chicken Robot. And there's a little play area and he went in there and there was a Hispanic grandmother with her two grandchildren and they were playing in the little playroom and she loved Malcolm. She thought they were hilarious. He thought he was hilarious, and she wanted to talk to him, very thick Hispanic accent, and she was, you know, talking to him, and she pat him on the head and in her accent, trying to communicate with him. He looked up at her
and looked at me and he goes taco shop. Oh my god, really yes, And she about fell over laughing, God, looked at you, Yeah, it goes taco shop, because I'd take him to the taco shop and the ladies people that absolutely and he recognized her accent, you know, from the Hispanic ladies behind the counter at taco shop. And immediately just put two and two together and said, this lady's from taco shop. I'm like, brow, yeah, that's funny. We we I think we just tip
of the iceberg, a very interesting topic. We may need to bring that one back and kick it around, just that whole we just want And I thought JJ's input was amazing. I think you're absolutely right that we're just trying to blend in and impress people and make people not hate us. At the time, it doesn't get talked about. Yeah somebody, somebody asked, uh,
or they texted. I always ask my Hispanic brethren what language they think in their head, and then I'm like, yeah, dude, that's the hardest thing to me about trying to learn a new language, because if you grow up learning a specific language, Spanish, that's the way you think, Like the objects that you see, those are the words in our minds. If I think of a Spanish word, it immediately I try to translate it
into the English word. And for true people are truly bilingual. Yeah, and they are able to do both and which they don't even think about it. Yeah, right, So just I suppose, like us having a thought, Yeah, but theirs is slotted into a language. But are your thoughts? Do your thoughts even require language? It's the importance of learning that from a being a kid and taking classes on it. I mean, you can take the classes, but you still never be as good as someone who's just
been speaking it casually out of a classroom type environment. Or like, I know a couple who they are. One of them is of Mexican descent, and they're like, we speak English, but our kids are going to Spanish speaking school, but we speak English. They'll notice speaking English at the house, but they're going to be a Spanish speaking school. Kids are under the age of five and so they go to school, a Spanish speaking school.
Now they do have Mexican background in their families, so maybe that you know, but they speak English at the house. I guess it'd be hard for you because you're you're not technically bilingual. But almost the greatest gift you can give to a little kid, I think is to teach him probably Spanish, well, golf and golf and car racing. I mean the best golfers. I know they started in an early age, but if that's forever anything, but then you lead to crazy parent who wants, you know, over coaches
their kid on any sport or anything. But to teach a kid a language when they're in those first five years is such a gift. And that's the only time I think you can get it. Yeah, to do it conversationally. My grandparents and my mom wanted us to speak Lithuanian, which I could
probably help us if we were in Vilnius together. But I don't speak Lithuanian, and I really wish they would have done Spanish instead, But they are full Lithuanians and they don't want that language to die, and it's obviously a lot rare so that was a priority for them. But God, I would have loved And my mom's fluent in Spanish. You know, did you pick up so you your mom is fluent in Spanish? Okay, so you grew up before you came to Texas, you had a fairly decent base level understanding
of Spanish. Yeah, you spent five seven years in Colombia before they immigrated to the United States. I don't know if that was something that you, you know, boned up on when you got to Texas. Miami is pretty uh yeah, obviously. You know, is there a big difference in the Spanish that Cubans speak as opposed to Mexicans or in Hispanics. I I'm not pretty similar enough to know that. I mean, yes, I would think, and I imagine they were all there, they would all say very much
yes. I I I don't detect the nuance of language A language that I don't speak fluently enough to be able to tell you that answer. Cool. The most important thing in the world is now in North Carolina, they kind of so far by theist. You know, are you doing your Robert duval again? Eating ice cream? The longest time you had a second line?
All you need is I put on a special pair of match tires, I mean a special set of match I put this on a special set of match time and then and then finish it with a you can hold you can't hold the line cold. There you go, and now you have a nice, well rounded, big, beautiful Bobby Duvall impression eating ice cream. That right, No one's arguing you got that down. That's still the trademark signature phrase. I closed my eyes and I think Bobby's in the room when he says
eating ice cream, ice cream is the is Robert Duvall's. It's Connor All I have yeah, take it away. KT leaves and Bobby Duvall steps in here. Every time he says that most important thing in the world is uh, can you feel it? Can you? Can you feel it in the air. Something's different about d f W today, and it's not that your world series champion. That's been a week. That's old news. Has it been a week? A week today? Yeah? Yeah, we still pinching
myself a little bit. Weird sports. We can do a little of that because I was kind of hit me yesterday and I got not life or Ranger man, but I'm like defer Rangers of the h Like we're in this damn tornado and then it ends and you take a breath, and then the parade and then it's now what not now what as far as what moves they're gonna make? But oh my god, they did it, Like that is what you were waiting for forever. Yeah, it's like now you want to wake
up and make the Rangers breakfast in bed? Now what do I yeah, take a shower, and they just want to not think about baseball for two months before the pictures and catchers report. Yeah, shortest off season has ever had baseball too much? Not for the fan of heart. We also need to I think we should pimp out Ben Rogers's essay that Channel eight posted, which I think is fantastic. Don't call him an essay. I don't care how comfortable you are. Right, It's a good, long read and well
worth your time. I actually I haven't ready yet. Yeah, it's posted. Yeah, it's a it's a jerker. Yeah, it's just a little bit longer than the text he sends us. Sometimes it really is good. That's great. He's gonna writing talent as well, the talented young Man WFA dot com. Ben Rogers can be heard here ten to two each and every day right around ninety freak. But that's not the most important thing in the world. The buzz. I'm feeling it. Yeah, I'm feeling it.
I started really feeling it last night around six o'clock when I got a phone call. That's right, Yeah, because guess what plays were made. You're not the only a lister on the dB. Bruh. Well, I thought the Giant the Ironclaw premiere that is tonight, which has zach Efron and Jeremy Ellen White and Lily James all in town. I thought it was an a list event. Only now I hear that you guys are probably going so anyway, we got big names in town. This is really cool, man.
This is a movie about the Vaughan Eric family. It doesn't come out until December twenty second, and unlike JJ lives in this world, this is probably the earliest before premier date of a movie I've ever scene in my life. Yeah, I don't know what is it? No November eighth. This is gonna be a big movie. I don't know, it's gonna you know, it's gonna maybe it feels bigger because this is a Dallas story but not coming out till December twenty second, and they're shooting for this to be a big
old Christmas movie and we get to see it six weeks early. Man, I'm never I've never done this, you guys, especially nothing like a gala red carpet event with the you know, the the top build actors are going to be there. Yeah, I mean I talked to our buddy over at Texas Theater last night, and this is a huge deal. They're they're bringing their own media group that is filming and covering the the red carpet event and all of that stuff. National media is in all likelihood gonna cover this stuff.
They're shutting down Jefferson Boulevard around that hole. Yeah. Yeah, So he recommended to get there early if you if you plan on driving. Yeah. I was really wondering what the vibe is gonna be tonight. It's gonna be it's gonna be legit. I wouldn't show up in flip flops and and shorts and a tank top. Hate that part. When was the last movie premiere that's ever been here in Dallas? Right? It's crazy because we're in major city. No, I mean like one of those JFK movies, or
maybe maybe JFK did I don't know. Probably I know back when the movie a couple of years ago with What Women Want, the one which Taraji or What Men Want when they remade you know, kind of remade for what Women Want from Gibson, Traji p Henson, Eric Abodua is in it, and she showed up to the screening. It really wasn't a premiere though. It was just like I mean, it was early screening and they did kind of a little small red card but she did a couple of interviews and then talk
to the audience. But it wasn't a big premiere. Yea, she's you know, a legend here in Dallie. It was, you know a little
different, but it wasn't like this. I went to Crazy Film and I believe it was that Gosh Angelica or Magnolia one of those spots and It was about probably five or six years ago, and it was for a movie that Ethan Hawk uh produced, directed whatever, a movie called Blaze about this country singer called named Blaze Foley from back in the seventies who was like really good friends with towns Van's aunt died whatever kind of a legend Texas legend, but
he made this movie about him and he was there with the lead actor, this guy named Ben and I got to attend the screening and talked to Ethan Hawk and asked a question and the you know, the after the film they did a Q and A. So that's the closest thing that I've ever been to. But it wasn't a premiere. I think they did a couple of a handful of screenings that day and and Ethan was at I think all of them. So this is that's the closest I've ever been, you know.
The six A two text came in and said, how does this work with the strike going on? Which is a very good question because there's certain films that are getting permission from SAG yeah to be able to promote there are projects in their films, which is this was probably one of them, which is why the actors are doing interviews and showing up to the red carpet. So that's a good question. Okay, it's gonna be cool. It's gonna be a cool night for Dallas. I mean, these are these are big stars,
and this is a Dallas story, you know. And I'm I didn't grow up here. I grew up watching some wrastling, but I watched The Hulkster, you know, and the Iron Chic, Like it wasn't the von Erics, weren't I heard of him? But this did not mean to me what it means means to people hearing this right now, Like a lot of
people this is it's the Cowboys and the damn von Erics. And maybe it was just that big chunk of time in the mid to late eighties, but they're huge, man, They're huge, iconic family, and it's a sad story. I think ultimately this movie is gonna be the story of Kevin Van Eric, who is the living von Eric brother. And it seems sort of stupid to do so, but I'm gonna reset just real quick, because just last night I watched a one hour Vice documentary about the Von Eric so I
was pumped for this tonight. Yeah, the debut of The Iron Claw here right in town where. Yes, very cool that they chose Dallas, obviously it makes sense, but to do this huge premiere and yeah, it's like the saddest story. I think there was a total of six von Eric brothers, all brothers. The eldest, who is very rarely mentioned, died when he was six years old, electrocuted. He touched like a trailer that was some reason, electrocuted and fell face down in the snow and drown. Unbelievable,
right, And then the next oldest is Kevin. That's the one that's still living. He lives in Hawaii, although I heard some things about he's moving back to a ranch here, but he wanted to get the hell out of here. And you'll know why if you either know the story or watch this movie or hear anything about the family. So I think it's going to feel good at the end. Look it's on the TV behind you. We got the iron claube and thrown up. Look at him. And then the
other brothers, Mike, Chris Carrey all died by suicide. But before that, David von Eric was the second brother. I think he died in Tokyo of some very bizarre uh ternitis. I think it's called inflammation of the small intestine. But there was questions is the drug related, and they're like, no, it's not. He died of He died of was frightening, but natural causes. Mike died of of pill overdose. Carrie died by shooting himself in the heart on his dad's ranch. What I'm at Lake Louisville, I
don't said. Maybe that's where the dad's ranch went. Maybe where he went and I hugged his dad went and took his dad's gone. And this is carry von Eric. This was probably the most famous one of them. He's the one that did you know, eventually go to w w F at the time and all this, But man, it's just brutal of a story. And I want to play one little cut of audio and it's from Kevin von Eric, the living von Eric, right, and this is sort of past
all the I mean, this poor guy. You know how often he's asked to talk about this. That's why I moved to Hawaii. He's like he literally goes and sits in a tree every day with his beautiful kids and now his grandkids, and his life is great. He's like don't be confused. My life's amazing. But to lose this many people, your family, five other brothers, all dead due to tragedy, I can see how you'd want to get out of here. And here is Dallas, Texas. Too many
ghosts here, man. Yeah, yes, Now this is audio of uh it's from Vice, and I don't know. I just found it very interesting. And it's about Kevin right toward the end, after all his family died, and he's he thought about do I now complete the circle? And he's considering suicide, but then he says, look, I'm not taking my own life. But he's like, I want to go to jail. So he was in Lubbock and he's he goes into a rifle shop and he's just gonna
steal a gun, knowing that he'll get arrested. And I just thought it was really kind of a poignant, poignant moment. So he's a little mumbly how he talked. But that's why I wanted to set it up there. There you go. So what happened with you after this? I mean, obviously you went through a really difficult period of yourself. I thought I was doing my best, and I was, but I was mad and uh,
and there was a time I thought that I wanted to die. You know, I wanted to be dead, and I know it when you'na kill myself, but I just wanted to fight anyway. In prison felt like the perfect thing for me. I was going to steal a gun because I knew how much people hate guns. If I stole one, that's prison. Lo and behold. I tried in a love a gun store with a bunch of good old Texas men in there. I'm gonna steal that gun, and the old man owned stops looking right at me, put it down my pants and my
stiff leg walked out of there. Or I stopped and looked at him, like you got something to say. That's when he just looked at me like an old man. Didn't say anything for a long time, just looked at me, and I looked right into his eyes. He said, here, keV man, I'm thinking sure. And I went out in my car and I just thought about the magnitude of what just happened. When I came in back in that store, gave him his rifle and hugged him. I said, oh, look too, and all those other men were in there.
Man, it was a great day for Texas, A great day for Vaughan Eric. I needed. That's so bad. I wanted in life to get as bad as it could be. Gosh, Jesus, I mean that is dark, dude. I love going that A great day for Texas, though. I mean, he's in Lubbock, that's so far enough from here, and these three guys are just watch him steal the gun, and that's all they say is love you, keV, knowing what he's been through, and like, whatever you're looking to do, you're not gonna. We're not gonna
call the cops and get you here. Not here. I don't know. I wonder if that'll be depicted in the film. Probably not, I don't know. But anyway, the film is tonight. It's the Iron Claw doesn't come out till December twenty second. You, unfortunately are not invited. Hah haha. But we'll tell you tomorrow if we. If JJ chases zach Efron around the Texas Theater, he's gonna body this role. I think he's gonna he's gonna be playing Kevin. He's people don't know. And then Jeremy Allen
White's gonna be Carrie. Oh my God, I can't wait. I sight I've actually talked to a good buddy of mine that somehow clandestinely saw a rough cut of this film weeks ago. Really yes, and he said it is pretty heavy that a little a little bit of his review was some of it's a little bit on the nose, but it's Hollywood, yeah, and they have to do that. But overall it's that you're it's it's pretty ripping. I mean, it's six brothers, five of them, on to tragedy,
like how can you make it? And I think by focusing on Kevin, that guy who just heard as the one that made it and the life that he's now given to his kids and grandkids, like that has to be the merry Christmas vibe, as this is going to be a Christmas release, But man, I'm with you, it's like, how do you how do you not just sit there cry and go home? And I bet they nail it. So anyway, Iron Claws tonight, big celebs are in town tonight,
and I think that's pretty damn neat the Texas Theater Beautiful. More on that obviously tomorrow as well, and we're gonna do Sports at seven next because one expert has predicted that the Rangers will sign Otani, plus some more Ranger stuff that we just hadn't got to yet that we need to cover next. On Night, every won the Freak and the Cowboys brought it in a wide receiver eb Flower Mound, Go to Eva
