You're listening to the downbeat on ninety seventy one, The Freak, the countdown to Chase Elliot? Is it two hours? Let's he doing He's not even awake. Well, it's seven thirty. He's probably changing his tires, don't They do it every day? But he doesn't do it. He changed his oil, didn't he? I figure he wants to be under the hood of a car. He's in Martin's. Martin are the Martinsville this weekend? Yeah, he's in Martinsville, Virginia. He's awake seven thirty. Yeah, dude,
it's Wednesday. Yeah, dude, we're practicing to day. We're't gonna take it. It was a late offer and we were like, we already had Christopher Bell. We could have said no. We said yeah, but it said yes. It's the son of Bill Elliott. That is the main reason I was like, hell yes. And in two thousand and nine he was on the Sports Illustrated UH cover issue with one Jordan's Beef in a future Phenom's piece. Who else was on there? The only other name that I
know was one that didn't turn out very well. Michael Kidd, Gilchrist the basketball player you know which not to be confused with Shakeel just Alexander. Oh, I didn't some do though, because of the hyphen and the G. Don't get stuck on that though. And just the three I was the three of them. One of those starts thirteen people on the cover. Yeah, we just go through all thirteen of them. I couldn't find him. I was looking for it, getting ask him. Went to the Sports Illustrated website
and it said, Nope, we don't exist for sale. Yeah one dollar Bama. I guess it's a bummer. I don't really don't read it anymore, but yeah, dude, and at Natica Love, run into the mailbox, grabbed the latest Sports Illustrated, Yeah issue, run inside and read it. Yeah, and look at the end, amazing photographs. Cranky little Rod base percent Greg Little Rod to Rick Riley. Okay, Rick Riley, what a beating. I always liked Rick Riley his last page thing. And then
he turned in one of these guys that everyone hates online. I never liked him. Did the smart He was smart? They didn't identify with small town Kevin who's twelve rings was illustrated. I didn't understand these things he's talking about. You're more of a faces in the crowd, guy, Oh my god, give me faces in the crowd all day all Dick magazine. So that mama something, That mama panda appears to be plowing her baby. Why is it snowing all of a sudden. I thought you said it was a live
cam live stream. It just started snowing. It did not snow that much in two minutes. It was not snowing. It dumped. We're watching a panda live stream. For those that don't know, there's one chatter in this well you she guse So it's a she. She's just chatting to the pandas because no one else in the chat box. We country Pandas. It's time to get your ass out of bed. Most speaking of exotic animals, stay tuned for nine o'clock when I've got some stories animal style. That's gonna be great. I can't here, I'm in the chat. I'm gonna say good morning, Yang Yang. Well we had on earthquake class. We didn't we didn't. They A seven point four magnitude earthquake
struck last night yesterday afternoon evening off of Taiwan. Now it killed nine people and injured At time of this publication, eight hundred and eighty two people, and this number of casualties could exponentially rise in the coming days. It happened at about eight pm Eastern time, so seven pm for US. It was at a depth of twenty one miles and eleven miles south southwest of the island's east coast. It prompted tsunami warnings that were later lifted in Taiwan, Japan,
and the Philippines. NBC News talked to an American who has lived in Taiwan for seventeen years, and she said that she was still feeling after shocks in the afternoon and hours after the initial quake. It's said, in all the years that I've lived here and in southern California, felt a lot of earthquakes, this was by far the strongest and the most frightening. Now we've all been pretty inundated online with images and video of the effects of this well
that was happening in real time. It's one of the wonderful benefits of having an HD four K camera in your pocket at all times, and everybody in the world has one. One that comes to mind pretty quickly is the building
that is half collapse. It appears to be about a four story housing a development, like a small apartment complex that is just sitting, you know, kind of just tilted at about a fifteen degree angle, and it looks like the instability that I feel when I look at this photo and see the video of this building is pretty big. It's like watching KT interview a nascard right instability of this structure. And all it would take is a is a mid
Robert Devaal impression to send this thing crashing to the crowd cream. I showed you guys a moment ago the video of the guy that was swimming in a in a in a big high rise apartment pool and somebody was shooting video of him while he was swimming ruin the earthquake hit and the amount of splashing and teetering and tottering backward that that guy's dealing with while he's in that pool is incredible. And he's just kind of frozen standing in the pool like my good
at spot as any maybe well, I think in those moments. And I saw another video of uh, these two people that were on scooters on a pretty big ass bridge and somebody behind them had their camera out and they were shooting, and you just see the bridge just swaying back and forth. You see the flags on the bridge moving back and forth, and everybody is just kind of bracing themselves. Yeah, because you don't know what to do.
You're just sitting there going uh and hoping that it ends. And I guess if you're on a bridge on a scooter, do you try to get off or you're gonna crash. You're gonna crash if you even try to move. So they're just kind of legs out standing and waiting for what a minute? Yeah, you take for a while. I think you're on You're right about the uh. Everyone having phones and now we get to see and it really
kind of humanizes these things. I mean, you could read about a earthquake in Taiwan twenty years ago and you just read about it and like, oh, that sounds terrible, but you go on Instagram and instantly watch video from all over. It just humanizes the hell out of it. I think that's a good thing. I don't know what that result of that is. But and the thing about videos, and we all know this, you know it.
The vibe that you get from a cell phone video is such a tiny percentage of what the experience has to be like I mean you get just a even with the video, it's still a minute glimpse into the reality and the totality of the situations. You said a seven to four seven four, John, What the magnitude is? Was of the most powerful earthquake ever recorded? Yeah? No, nine point one, No eleven point three. I believe the skill taps out at ten, but I could be wrong, but I'll
say, really, you guys are sandwiching it. You said nine to one, higher, nine three higher, nine to eight, Kevin, Oh my god, nine, let's just say between ninety four. No. I think it's important because you might rank it if there were two that were the same that were in that range. It's in nine to five in Chile. In nineteen sixty Alaska had a nine to two. I don't know how that's ensured. I understand we have the Richter scale, right, but yeah, based
off of former New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter. Yep, it's based off of him. Yeah, he had a passion for the earthquake, for tectonic plate movement. Or for those non hockey fans out there, Conan's former psychick Andy Richter. There you go, or oh, Brodie, there's a girl wrestler, Wendy Richter Rich, Yeah, she'd be the one most likely to cause an earthquake. No, she was skinny and hottish, I think, yeah, but not when you're look anybody can create damage when you're flying off
that turn buckle with that that velocophy. I mean super fly Snooko wasn't a big guy per se by comparison, but man, when he went flying off of that turnbuckle, woe. How did Rick Renner never have a feature called the Richter scale? Like pre game before MAVs rockets tonight his top five highlights of the night on the Richter Scale? Ricter, This dunk was eight, not bad? And if you suggested that to him, I bet it would be on tonight's broadcast. And Rick Renner is a sweet man? Is I
love it? D Yeah? I just don't know the measurement, like how accurate it is? Like doesn't it depend on where you're picking up the readings And if the episode of the earthquake is like right next to where their reading scale is, that might crank it up a little. What doesn't matter. Seven point four is a big boy, largest one in Taiwan in twenty five years and among the creepy ones sick. They're working a free sixty people who
are trapped in a tunnel like the movie Daylight starring Sliced alone. Do you ever see that? Uh Daylight? Yeah? Light, I feel like I did, like a I don't know if it's a Cabby or what a New York driver. And then there's a for an earthquake. Something causes the ends of the tunnel to collapse and they're trapped inside. Water levels are rising. We need a hero. Good things sliced the loans in here, otherwise what would we do? Yeah, it was supposed to be Cliffhanger for tunnels.
They had hard to replicate that area. Was expecting a big influx of visitors this weekend because they have a big holiday in Taiwan for a traditional Chinese festival known as Tomb Sweeping Day when people honor their ancestors. But the earthquake has disrupted all rail services and damaged the main road into I can't pronounce the city Julleen h u a l Juaaleen Hualeen, and there's no easy way to get there at the moment, So that kind of screwed up their their big party
tomb sweep. That'sundly a great idea. I would assume it. He used to go clean up. Maybe the graveyards put flowers down. And Mexico has Ada we don't have anything like that. Yeah, we just die go away. Yeah, get some more faster where your money die, your money going old man. Yeah, Oh, it's so much of that end kidding inheritance. Now in small towns, they do try to take care of the cemeteries. They have cemetery boards things like that. I'm not sure about the city.
I don't even know. I mean, I I know a few cemeteries that I like. If I died, I was gonna get buried up around here somewhere. I wouldn't know where to go. I know, where do you go? What if you Yeah, I kind of know what cemetery I would be put in off the top of my head. And only there's two cemeteries. They probably put you in the smaller one, a little further out of town. Yeah, they're running out of a room on the big one. But again, like I said, they have a board of executives.
So maybe one of my friends or family members is on the cemetery board, or they vote to like you know, clean it up or cemetery board. The amount of committees in small towns is amazing. You don't want to get true creamed. I'm sorry, you don't want to get creamed. Oh well not today? Like now when you want to get cremated and you want to get buried or cremated buried? Really? Yeah? When we cremate you, what's your whole body intact? Like what are you a pharaoh? Yeah?
I have to find the power to rise from the dead like they'll do back, like they're going to two thousand years. They're gonna unearth the tomb of King Kevio, put him on a display and ah around the world. Yeah, I could be the Nixonian. I could, but I may not likely cremate you fire up an area like Jesus, you get me, fire up a tractor and just dumpy all over only your your native land. I have helped spread ashes on the ballpark. For whom you've done that to? Yeah,
a friend of mine's friend's dad. So you illegally brought ash to a ballpark. Yea, spread it. The problem is I was in a major league field. That's illegal. Caught in the background dumping it on the first base foul line. I was seen in the background of the set of MLB First Pitch or whatever with Chris Rose and Jason Verattek or whatever the other analyst is. It is Kevin lar christ Ers that shows love kicking Kevin malar me and my buddy in the background. You can see us kind of looking around
really and then going in your pocket. Yeah. It was twenty eleven World Series availability day, you know, before the game, getting audio for work. But his dad, his buddy's dad was a big Ranger fan. I was like, well, let's dump it by where Michael Young caught the fly ball to clinch the twenty eleven ALCS and you did the super secretly the first
base foul line. Yeah, because they had you in the media, like in the dugout, so you know, you talked to Wash for a minute and that, you know, just the group gang Bang interviews and take the tape back to the station and load it so you can do tickers or whatever on which kind of tiptoe out there. I just imagine, sure enough, we're seeing but I have got a picture of it, like on my old phone. Let's imagine Kevin and his friend out there, like like Andy defrayane
trying to get rid of the evidence from digging a cell. There were whistling trying to look on talant in the field's pristine too. It's in World series shape. That's a dumb move. Could have lost my job that day, didn't. I have a list of a taiwan worst natural disasters in world history.
Hit me, well, you're gonna try, Okay. See, that's actually things that coincided sort of that that the people who tsunami that for that one a few years ago coincided pretty closely with everyone having a cell phone in their pocket. And the videos that came out of that are unreal. That one three point turn car we all saw he's driving and then oh nope and rattles off a quick three point turn and hits it vertical pedal on the right. Put the heel to the steel, my man, and that saved the
dude's life. But we have number one and number two are the same natural disaster head and shoulders above the others as the deadliest of all time. What's the worst and it's a little out of the box. Okay, volcano probably right, No, no, and look I don't know, I'm just Wikipedia, Okay, in terms of deaths. Yes, okay, flood, flood, flood, hurricane. Yeah, blood is Moses. I mean, uh noah, the thing they killed the whole world except for two people. It's
number one, and Wikipedia didn't have it. That means it's not real. Four million dead nineteen thirty one China floods, Wow, four million Jesus. And then two million dead is number two eighteen eighty seven Yellow River flood. Also in China. They got a bat over there with all of the the underground stuff. He's Danny Baalos. I'm just saying, with all that stuff that's connected the earthquake, the tsunami, the flooding, it's all about the
shifting, the geological nightmare that those people live on over there. Yeah, I mean we what do we have? Tornado? Well, I guess we'll let you let him out of it. Huh, Well, we'll let you out of this one, this recovery flood flood. Then the third is also China, six hundred fifty five thousand's nuclear reactor N seventy six Tangshan earthquake.
And then the only other one in the half a million club, a cyclone in East Pakistan is now Bangladesh. They're not counting what's it called, oh like plagues because the Black Death is the big one, yeah, of them all. Well, plague is different than a natural disaster. It's a you know, yeah, I think it's a biological thing and we don't always know the cause. So you want to be buried with your body intact? That's
interesting? What about you cremation? Hey, I'm getting creamed. I think so too, And I think I want I get creamed and have my ashes. Just spread it, you know, I'm an east Alis guy, spread them over a white rock lake and hopes that I can grew up somebody's regatta that weekend. That's I'm gonna spread a pinch of yours at La Banketta. That's a good idea. That actually put it on your you, okay, ding in remembrance of Ding, one pinch of ash on my Chisodia. Put
a new seasoning on this. This is great. It made a lot of green sauce off set this. Eat my butt. Uh, there's some cigarette ash on this toc and what have you got? Butt ash? You don't know? That was the that was the part you got. Uh, Well, my daddy went away. We cremated him, and it was kind of cool though. We went out to Sarasota Bay, you know, he kind of grew up there racing boats, and we put all put all the ashes in the bay, like in an area where he would go rip it up
and then and you do this. A lot of water water based people do this, and you get the boats going a circle kind of around the air. After you put the ash in sail, put whatever in the ash, and then you do like a circle around it. Like some people have seen this when they're in the Caribbean or Hawaii, you know whatever. You're like, why are these boats doing a weird circle? It is generally like a funeral, a se a funeral at sea, Viking funeral, kind of a
funnel of ash sort of. And then we ripped full speed right through the middle of them, mad ass ass hauling funeral. Yeah. Yeah, and it was that moment you became a man. Yeah. God, well that's kind of cool significance. Yeah, I'm not joking like them. No, it was obviously quite memorable day. But yeah, the whirlpool of ashes going and yeah, and I think it was my suggestion, let's all ass through
it, get out of here. The full Chase Elliott and whoever was you know, yeah, that's bad as it was, like, yeah, let's do it. It's all the boats just there's maybe I don't know, three or four boats, and we just kind of right through the middle of it, all these floating little checker flags and stuff, you know, like other little stuff that probably got lodged in the blowhole of a dolphin within the hour. Take a few with us. Well, if anything happens to this Taiwan
situation, we'll keep you abreast. Terrible man Terrible didn't get to the bottom of what is Taiwan, and we won't, which will indicate the entire nine o'clock hours, a whole week's worth of shows, Political Strife, a five part series Asia Next Week, five part series The Downbeat, Deep Dive, Taiwan, What is it? That's the deal? Coming up next Yesterday and Sports was a prison on planet bull Crab and the Galaxy of Sucks. Camel Feet next to ninety seven won the Free
